8ΚαὶKaiAnd ποιμένεςpoimenesshepherds ἦσανēsanthere were ἐνenvvv τῇtēvvv χώρᾳchōranearby , τῇtēvvv αὐτῇautēvvv ἀγραυλοῦντεςagraulountesresiding in the fields ΚαὶKaiAnd φυλάσσοντεςphylassonteskeeping φυλακὰςphylakaswatch τῆςtēs- νυκτὸςnyktosby night . ἐπὶepiover τὴνtēn- ποίμνηνpoimnēnflocks αὐτῶνautōntheir
9καὶkai- ἰδοὺidoubehold , ἄγγελοςangelosangel ΚυρίουKyriouof [the] Lord ἐπέστηepestēstood before αὐτοῖςautoisthem , καὶkaiand δόξαdoxa[the] glory ΚυρίουKyriouof [the] Lord περιέλαμψενperielampsenshone around αὐτούςautousthem , καὶkaiand ἐφοβήθησανephobēthēsanthey were terrified . φόβονphobonvvv μέγανmeganvvv
10καὶkaiand εἶπενeipensaid αὐτοῖςautoisto them , ὁhothe ἄγγελοςangelosangel ΜὴMē“ {Do} not φοβεῖσθεphobeisthebe afraid ! ἰδοὺidoubehold , γὰρgarFor εὐαγγελίζομαιeuangelizomaiI bring you good news ὑμῖνhymin. . . χαρὰνcharanjoy μεγάληνmegalēn[of] great ἥτιςhētisthat ἔσταιestaiwill be παντὶpantifor all τῷtōthe λαῷlaōpeople :
11ὅτιhoti- ἐτέχθηetechthēhas been born ὑμῖνhyminto you . σήμερονsēmeronToday ΣωτήρSōtēra Savior ὅςhosHe ἐστινestinis ΧριστὸςChristosChrist ΚύριοςKyrios[the] Lord ! ἐνenin πόλειpolei[the] city ΔαυίδDauidof David
12καὶkaiAnd τοῦτοtoutothis [will be] ὑμῖνhyminto you : τῷtōthe σημεῖονsēmeionsign εὑρήσετεheurēseteYou will find βρέφοςbrephosa baby ἐσπαργανωμένονesparganōmenonwrapped in swaddling cloths κείμενονkeimenonlying ἐνenin φάτνῃphatnēa manger . ”
13ΚαὶKaiAnd ἐξαίφνηςexaiphnēssuddenly ἐγένετοegenetothere appeared σὺνsynwith τῷtōthe ἀγγέλῳangelōangel πλῆθοςplēthosa great multitude στρατιᾶςstratiashost , οὐρανίουouraniouof [the] heavenly αἰνούντωνainountōnpraising τὸνton- ΘεὸνTheonGod καὶkaiand λεγόντωνlegontōnsaying :
14ΔόξαDoxa“ Glory ἐνenin ὑψίστοιςhypsistois[the] highest , ΘεῷTheōto God καὶkaiand ἐπὶepion γῆςgēsearth εἰρήνηeirēnēpeace ἐνento ἀνθρώποιςanthrōpoismen εὐδοκίαeudokiawell-pleasing
15ΚαὶKai- ἐγένετοegenetoWhen ὡςhōs. . . ἀπῆλθονapēlthonhad left ἀπ’ap’. . . αὐτῶνautōnthem εἰςeis[and gone] into τὸνton- οὐρανὸνouranonheaven , οἱhoithe ἄγγελοιangeloiangels ΚαὶKai- οἱhoithe ἄνθρωποιanthrōpoipeople οἱhoithe ποιμένεςpoimenesshepherds εἰπὼνeipōnHe said πρὸςprosto ἀλλήλουςallēlousone another , ΔιέλθωμενDielthōmen“ Let us go δὴdē- ἕωςheōsto ΒηθλεὲμBēthleemBethlehem καὶkaiand ἴδωμενidōmensee τὸto- ῥῆμαrhēma[thing] τοῦτοtoutothis τὸto- γεγονὸςgegonoshas happened , ὃhowhich ὃhowhich ΚύριοςKyriosLord ἐγνώρισενegnōrisenhas made known ἡμῖνhēminto us . ”
16ΚαὶKaiSo ἦλθονēlthonvvv σπεύσαντεςspeusantesthey hurried off καὶkaiand ἀνεῦρονaneuronfound τήνtēn- τεte- ΜαριὰμMariamMary καὶkaiand τὸνton- ἸωσὴφIōsēphJoseph καὶkaiand τὸtothe βρέφοςbrephosBaby , κείμενονkeimenon[who] was lying ἐνenin τῇtēthe φάτνῃphatnēmanger .
17ἰδόντεςidontesthey had seen [the Child] , δὲde[After] διεγνώρισανdiegnorisanthey spread περὶperi- τοῦtouthe ῥήματοςrhēmatosmessage τοῦtou- λαληθέντοςlalēthentosthey had received αὐτοῖςautois. . . περὶperiabout τοῦtouvvv παιδίουpaidiou[Him] . τούτουtoutouvvv

19ἡhē- δὲdeBut ΜαριὰμMariamMary πάνταpantaall συνετήρειsynetēreitreasured up τὰta- ῥήματαrhēmatathings ταῦταtautathese συμβάλλουσα*symballousa[and] pondered [them] ἐνenin τῇtē- καρδίᾳkardiaheart . αὐτῆςautēsher
20ΚαὶKai- ὑπέστρεψανhypestrepsanreturned , οἱhoiThe ποιμένεςpoimenesshepherds δοξάζοντεςdoxazontesglorifying καὶkaiand αἰνοῦντεςainountespraising τὸνton- ΘεὸνTheonGod ἐπὶepifor πᾶσινpasinall οἷςhois- ἤκουσανēkousanthey had heard καὶkaiand εἶδονeidonseen , καθὼςkathōswhich was just as ἐλαλήθηelalēthē[the angel] had told πρὸςpros- αὐτούςautousthem .
21ΚαὶKai- ὅτεhoteWhen ἐπλήσθησανeplēsthēsanhad passed , ἡμέραιhēmeraidays ὀκτὼoktō[the] eight τοῦtouuntil περιτεμεῖνperitemeincircumcision τὸtothe παιδίονpaidionchild καὶkaiAnd ἐκλήθηeklēthēHe was named τὸtothe ὄνομαonomaname αὐτοῦautou- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus , τὸtothe κληθὲνklēthenhad given [Him] ὑπὸhypo- τοῦtouthe ἀγγέλουangelouangel πρὸprobefore τοῦtou- συλληφθῆναιsullephthenaihad been conceived αὐτὸνautonHe ἐνen. . . τῇtē. . . κοιλίᾳkoilia. . . .
22ΚαὶKaiAnd ὅτεhotewhen ἐπλήσθησανeplēsthēsanwas complete , αἱhaithe ἡμέραιhēmeraitime τοῦtouof καθαρισμοῦkatharismoupurification αὐτῶνautōn- κατὰkataaccording to τὸνtonthe νόμονnomonLaw ΜωϋσέωςMōuseōsof Moses ἀνήγαγονanēgagon[His parents] brought αὐτὸνautonHim εἰςeisto ἹεροσόλυμαHierosolymaJerusalem παραστῆσαιparastēsaito present [Him] τῷtōto the ΚυρίῳKyriōLord
23καθὼςkathōs(as γέγραπταιgegraptaiit is written ἐνenin νόμῳnomō[the] Law ΚυρίουKyriouof [the] Lord ὅτιhoti- : ΠᾶνPan“ Every ἄρσενarsenmale διανοῖγονdianoigonfirstborn μήτρανmētran. . . ἅγιονhagion. . . τῷtōto the ΚυρίῳKyriōLord ” ), κληθήσεταιklēthēsetaishall be consecrated

29ΝῦνNyn“ - ἀπολύειςapolyeisYou now dismiss τὸνton- δοῦλόνdoulonservant σουsouYour ΔέσποταDespotaSovereign Lord , κατὰkataas τὸto- ῥῆμάrhēmahave promised , σουsouYour ἐνenin εἰρήνῃeirēnēpeace .
30ὅτιhotiFor εἶδονeidonhave seen οἱhoi- ὀφθαλμοίophthalmoieyes μουmoumy τὸto- σωτήριόνsōtērionsalvation , σουsouYour
31ὃhowhich ἡτοίμασαςhētoimasasYou have prepared κατὰkatain πρόσωπονprosōponthe sight πάντωνpantōnof all τῶνtōn- λαῶνlaōnpeople ,
32φῶςphōsa light εἰςeisfor ἀποκάλυψινapokalypsinrevelation ἐθνῶνethnōnto [the] Gentiles , καὶkaiand δόξανdoxanfor glory λαοῦlaoupeople σουsouto Your ἸσραήλIsraēlIsrael . ”
33ΚαὶKai- ἦνēnwere ἸωσὴφIōsēphJoseph καὶkaiand ἡhē- μήτηρmētērmother αὐτοῦautou[The Child’s] θαυμάζοντεςthaumazontesamazed ἐπὶepiat τοῖςtoiswhat λαλουμένοιςlaloumenoiswas spoken περὶperiabout αὐτοῦautouHim .
34καὶkaiThen εὐλόγησενeulogēsenblessed αὐτοὺςautousthem ΣυμεὼνSymeōnSimeon καὶkaiThen εἶπενeipensaid πρὸςprosto ΜαριὰμMariamMary : τὴνtēn- μητέραmēteramother αὐτοῦautouHis ἸδοὺIdou“ Behold , οὗτοςhoutosthis [Child] κεῖταιkeitaiis appointed εἰςeis[to cause] πτῶσινptōsinfall καὶkaiand ἀνάστασινanastasin[the] rise πολλῶνpollōnof many ἐνenin τῷtō- ἸσραὴλIsraēlIsrael , καὶkaiand εἰςeis[to be] σημεῖονsēmeiona sign ἀντιλεγόμενονantilegomenonthat will be spoken against ,

44νομίσαντεςnomisantesAssuming δὲde- αὐτὸνautonHe ἐνenin τῇtētheir συνοδίᾳsynodiacompany , εἶναιeinaiwas ἦλθονēlthonvvv ἡμέραςhēmerasfor a day ὁδὸνhodonthey traveled on καὶkai[before] ἀνεζήτουνanezētounthey began to look αὐτὸνautonfor Him ἐνenamong τοῖςtois[their] συγγενέσιsuggenesirelatives καὶkaiand τοῖςtois- γνωστοῖςgnōstoisfriends .
45καὶkaiWhen μὴmēvvv εὑρόντεςheurontesthey could not find [Him] , αὐτόνautonHim . ὑπέστρεψανhypestrepsanthey returned εἰςeisto ἸερουσαλὴμIerousalēmJerusalem ζητοῦντεςzetountesto search for αὐτόνautonHim .
