1ΟὗτοςHoutosThis γὰρgarFor ὁhowho ΜελχισέδεκMelchisedekMelchizedek ΒασιλεὺςBasileus“ king ΣαλήμSalēmof Salem ” ἱερεὺςhiereusa priest τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , τοῦtou- ὙψίστουHypsistouMost High . ὁho- συναντήσαςsynantēsasHe met ἈβραὰμAbraamAbraham ὑποστρέφοντιhypostrephontireturning ἀπὸapofrom τῆςtēsthe κοπῆςkopēsslaughter τῶνtōnof the βασιλέωνbasileōnkings καὶkaiand εὐλογήσαςeulogēsasblessed αὐτόνautonhim ,
2ᾧhōto [him] καὶkaiand δεκάτηνdekatēna tenth ἀπὸapoof πάντωνpantōneverything . ἐμέρισενemerisenapportioned ἈβραάμAbraamAbraham πρῶτονprōtonFirst , μὲνmen[his name] ἑρμηνευόμενοςhermēneuomenosmeans ΒασιλεὺςBasileus“ king δικαιοσύνηςdikaiosynēsof righteousness . ” ἔπειταepeitaThen δὲde- καὶkaialso , ΒασιλεὺςBasileus“ king ΣαλήμSalēmof Salem ” ὅho- ἐστίestiI have ΒασιλεὺςBasileus“ king εἰρήνηςeirēnēsof peace . ”
3ἀπάτωρapatōrWithout father ἀμήτωρamētōr[or] mother ἀγενεαλόγητοςagenealogētos[or] genealogy , μήτεmēte. . . ἀρχὴνarchēnbeginning ἡμερῶνhēmerōnof days μήτεmēte[or] ζωῆςzōēsof life , τέλοςtelosend ἔχωνechōnwithout ἀφωμοιωμένοςaphōmoiōmenoslike δὲde- τῷtōthe ΥἱῷHuiōSon τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , μένειmeneihe remains ἱερεὺςhiereusa priest εἰςeisfor τὸto- διηνεκέςdiēnekesall time .
4ΘεωρεῖτεTheōreiteConsider δὲde- πηλίκοςpēlikoshow great οὗτοςhoutos[Melchizedek was] : ὁhothe καὶkaiEven δεκάτηνdekatēna tenth ἈβραὰμAbraamAbraham ἔδωκενedōkengave ἐκekof τῶνtōnthe ἀκροθινίωνakrothiniōnplunder . ᾧhō[him] πατριάρχηςpatriarchēspatriarch
5καὶkaiEven οἱhoithe μὲνmen. . . ἐκekof τῶνtōnthe υἱῶνhuiōnsons ΛευὶLeuiof Levi τὴνtēn- ἱερατείανhierateianpriests λαμβάνοντεςlambanonteswho become ἐντολὴνentolēncommands ἔχουσινechousinvvv ἀποδεκατοῦνapodekatounto collect a tenth τὸνtonfrom the λαὸνlaonpeople — κατὰkata- τὸνtonthe νόμονnomonlaw τοῦτ’tout’that ἐστίestiI have τοὺςtousfrom ἀδελφοὺςadelphousbrothers — αὐτῶνautōntheir καίπερkaiperthough ἐξεληλυθόταςexelēlythotasthey [too] are descended ἐκekfrom τῆςtēs. . . ὀσφύοςosphyos. . . ἈβραάμAbraamAbraham .
6ὁho[Melchizedek] , δὲdeBut μὴmēvvv γενεαλογούμενοςgenealogoumenoswho did not trace his descent ἐξexfrom αὐτῶνautōn[Levi] , δεδεκάτωκεdedekatokecollected a tenth τὸνtonhim who ἈβραάμAbraamfrom Abraham καὶkaiand τὸνtonhim who ἔχονταechontahad τὰςtasthe ἐπαγγελίαςepangeliaspromises . εὐλόγηκε.eulogekeblessed
7χωρὶςchōrisvvv δὲdeAnd πάσηςpasēsvvv ἀντιλογίαςantilogiasindisputably , τὸtothe ἔλαττονelattonlesser ὑπὸhypoby τοῦtouthe κρείττονοςkreittonosgreater . εὐλογεῖταιeulogeitaiis blessed
8ΚαὶKaivvv ὧδεhōdeIn the case [of the Levites] , μὲνmenvvv δεκάταςdekatasthe tenth ; ἀποθνῄσκοντεςapothnēskontesmortal ἄνθρωποιanthrōpoimen λαμβάνουσινlambanousincollect ἐκεῖekeiin the case [of Melchizedek] , δὲdebut μαρτυρούμενοςmartyroumenosit is affirmed ὅτιhotithat ζῇzēhe lives on .
9καὶkaiAnd ὡςhōsso ἔποςeposvvv εἰπεῖνeipeinto speak , διὰdiathrough ἈβραὰμAbraamAbraham . καὶkai- ΛευὶLeuiLevi , ὁhowho δεκάταςdekatas[the] tenth , λαμβάνωνlambanōncollects δεδεκάτωταιdedekatōtaipaid [the] tenth
10ἔτιetistill γὰρgarFor ἦνēn[Levi] was τῇtēthe ὀσφύϊosphuiloin τοῦtouof [his] πατρὸςpatrosancestor . ἦνēncould have been attained ὅτεhotewhen συνήντησενsynēntēsenmet αὐτῷautōAbraham , ΜελχισέδεκMelchisedekMelchizedek
11ΕἰEiif μὲνmen- οὖνounNow τελείωσιςteleiōsisperfection διὰdiathrough τῆςtēsthe ΛευιτικῆςLeuitikēsLevitical ἱερωσύνηςhierōsynēspriesthood ἦνēncould have been attained ὁhothe λαὸςlaospeople γὰρgar( for ἐπ’ep’on αὐτῇautēher , νενομοθέτητο·nenomothetetoreceived [the] law ), τίςtiswhy ἔτιeti[was there] still χρείαchreianeed κατὰkatain τὴνtēnthe τάξινtaxinorder ΜελχισέδεκMelchisedekof Melchizedek ἕτερονheteron[for] another ἀνίστασθαιanistasthaito appear — ἱερέαhiereapriest καὶkaiand οὐounot κατὰkatain τὴνtēnthe τάξινtaxinorder ἈαρὼνAarōnof Aaron ? λέγεσθαιlegesthai[one]
12μετατιθεμένηςmetatithemenēsis changed , γὰρgarFor [when] τῆςtēsthe ἱερωσύνηςhierōsynēspriesthood ἐξexvvv ἀνάγκηςanankēsmust καὶkaias well . νόμουnomou[the] law μετάθεσιςmetathesisbe changed γίνεταιginetai. . .
13Ἐφ’Eph’[He] of ὃνhonwhom γὰρgar- λέγεταιlegetaiare said ταῦταtautathese things φυλῆςphylēstribe , ἑτέραςheterasa different μετέσχηκενmeteschēkenbelonged to ἀφ’aph’from ἧςhēswhich οὐδεὶςoudeisno one προσέσχηκεproseskhekehas ever served τῷtōat the θυσιαστηρίῳthysiastēriōaltar .
14πρόδηλονprodēlon[it is] clear γὰρgarFor ὅτιhotithat ἐξexfrom ἸούδαIoudaJudah , ἀνατέταλκενanatetalkendescended ὁho- ΚύριοςKyriosLord ἡμῶνhēmōnour εἰςeisas to ἣνhēnwhich φυλὴνphylēna tribe οὐδὲνoudennothing περὶperiabout ἱερωσύνηςhierōsynēspriesthood ΜωϋσῆςMōusēsMoses ἐλάλησε.elaleseHe promised
15ΚαὶKaiAnd περισσότερονperissoteronmore ἔτιetieven κατάδηλόνkatadēlonclear ἐστινestin[ this point ] is εἰeiif κατὰkata- τὴνtēn- ὁμοιότηταhomoiotētalike ΜελχισέδεκMelchisedekMelchizedek ἀνίσταταιanistataiappears , ἱερεὺςhiereuspriest ἕτεροςheterosanother
16ὃςhosone who οὐounot κατὰkataby νόμονnomona law ἐντολῆςentolēsof succession σαρκικῆςsarkikes. . . , γέγονενgegonenhas become [a priest] ἀλλὰallabut κατὰkataby δύναμινdynamin[the] power ζωῆςzōēslife . ἀκαταλύτουakatalytouof an indestructible
17ΜαρτυρεῖMartyreitestifies γὰρgarFor ὅτιhoti- : ΣὺSy“ You [are] ἱερεὺςhiereusa priest εἰςeisvvv τὸνtonvvv αἰῶναaiōnaforever κατὰkatain τὴνtēnthe τάξινtaxinorder ΜελχισέδεκMelchisedekof Melchizedek .”
18ἈθέτησιςAthetēsisset aside μὲνmenSo γὰρgar. . . γίνεταιginetaiis προαγούσηςproagousēsthe former ἐντολῆςentolēscommandment διὰdiabecause τὸto- αὐτῆςautēsit [was] ἀσθενὲςasthenesweak καὶkaiand ἀνωφελέςanōphelesuseless
19οὐδὲνouden. . . ), γὰρgar( for ἐτελείωσενeteleiōsenmade nothing perfect ὁhothe νόμοςnomoslaw ἐπεισαγωγὴepeisagōgē[is] introduced , δὲdeand κρείττονοςkreittonosa better ἐλπίδοςelpidoshope δι’di’by ἧςhēswhich ἐγγίζομενengizomenwe draw near τῷtō- ΘεῷTheōto God .
20ΚαὶKaiAnd καθ’kath’. . . ὅσονhosonof this οὐounone χωρὶςchōris[happened] without ὁρκωμοσίαςhorkōmosiasan oath . οἱhoi[others] μὲνmen- γὰρgarFor χωρὶςchōris[happened] without ὁρκωμοσίαςhorkōmosiasan oath . εἰσὶνeisin- ἱερεῖςhiereispriests γεγονότεςgegonotesbecame
21ὁho[Jesus became a priest] δὲdebut μετὰmetawith ὁρκωμοσίαςhorkōmosiasan oath διὰdiaby τοῦtouthe [One who] λέγοντοςlegontossaid πρὸςprosto αὐτόνautonHim : ὀμόσῃomosēswears ΚύριοςKyrios“ [The] Lord καὶkaiand οὐouvvv μεταμεληθήσεταιmetamelēthēsetaiwill not change His mind : ΣὺSy‘ You [are] ἱερεὺςhiereusa priest εἰςeisvvv τὸνtonvvv αἰῶναaiōnaforever .’” ΚατὰKataBecause of τὴνtēn- τάξινtaxinorder ΜελχισέδεκMelchisedekof Melchizedek .”
22κατὰkatain τοσοῦτονtosoutonsuch a great κρείττονοςkreittonosa better διαθήκηςdiathēkēscovenant . γέγονενgegonenhas become ἔγγυοςengyos[the] guarantee ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus
23καὶkai[oath] , οἱhoi[other] μὲνmen. . . πλείονέςpleionesmany εἰσιeisiare γεγονότεςgegonoteshave been ἱερεῖςhiereispriests , διὰdiasince τὸto- θανάτῳthanatōdeath κωλύεσθαιkōlyesthaiprevented them from παραμένεινparameneincontinuing [in office] .
24ὁho- δὲdeBut διὰdiabecause τὸto- μένεινmeneinlives αὐτὸνauton[Jesus] εἰςeisvvv τὸνtonvvv αἰῶναaiōnaforever , ἀπαράβατονaparabatona permanent ἔχειecheiHe has τὴνtēn- ἱερωσύνηνhierōsynēnpriesthood .
25ὅθενhothenTherefore καὶkai- σῴζεινsōzeinto save εἰςeisvvv τὸtovvv παντελὲςpantelescompletely δύναταιdynataiHe is able τοὺςtousthose who προσερχομένουςproserchomenousdraw near δι’di’through αὐτοῦautouHim , τῷtō- ΘεῷTheōto God πάντοτεpantote[since He] always ζῶνzōnlives εἰςeis- τὸto- ἐντυγχάνεινentynchaneinto intercede ὑπὲρhyperfor αὐτῶνautōnthem .
26ΤοιοῦτοςToioutosSuch γὰρgartruly ἡμῖνhēminus — ἔπρεπενeprepenbefits ἀρχιερεύςarchiereusa high priest ὅσιοςhosios[One who is] holy , ἄκακοςakakosinnocent , ἀμίαντοςamiantosundefiled , κεχωρισμένοςkechōrismenosset apart ἀπὸapofrom τῶνtōn- ἁμαρτωλῶνhamartōlōnsinners , καὶkaiand ὑψηλότεροςhypsēloterosabove τῶνtōnthe οὐρανῶνouranōnheavens . γενόμενοςgenomenosexalted
27ὃςhos[He] οὐκouknot ἔχειecheidoes καθ’kath’vvv ἡμέρανhēmerandaily ἀνάγκηνanankēnneed ὥσπερhōsper[Unlike] οἱhoithe [other] ἀρχιερεῖςarchiereishigh priests , πρότερονproteronfirst ὑπὲρhyperfor τῶνtōn[His] ἰδίωνidiōnown ἁμαρτιῶνhamartiōnsins θυσίαςthysiassacrifices , ἀναφέρεινanaphereinto offer ἔπειταepeitaand then τῶνtōnfor [the sins] τοῦtouof the λαοῦlaoupeople ; τοῦτοtouto. . . γὰρgar- ἐποίησενepoiēsenHe [sacrificed for sin] ἐφάπαξephapaxonce for all ἑαυτὸνheautonHimself . ἀνενέγκαςanenenkaswhen He offered up
28ὁhothe νόμοςnomoslaw γὰρgarFor ἀνθρώπουςanthrōpousmen καθίστησινkathistēsinappoints ἀρχιερεῖςarchiereisas high priests ἔχονταςechontaswho are ἀσθένειανastheneianweak ; ὁhothe λόγοςlogos[appointed] δὲdebut τῆςtēsthe ὁρκωμοσίαςhorkōmosiasoath , τῆςtēswhich [came] μετὰmetaafter τὸνtonthe νόμονnomonlaw , ΥἱόνHuion[the] Son , εἰςeisvvv τὸνtonvvv αἰῶναaiōnaforever . τετελειωμένονteteleiōmenonwho has been made perfect
