2μνησθῆναιmnēsthēnaiby recalling τῶνtōnwhat προειρημένωνproeirēmenōnwas foretold ῥημάτωνrhēmatōnvvv ὑπὸhypoby τῶνtōnthe ἁγίωνhagiōnholy προφητῶνprophētōnprophets καὶkaiand τῆςtēs- τῶνtōn- ἀποστόλωνapostolōnapostles . ὑμῶνhymōnthrough your ἐντολῆςentolēscommanded τοῦtouby [our] ΚυρίουKyriouLord καὶkaiand ΣωτῆροςSōtērosSavior
3τοῦτοtouto- πρῶτονprōtonMost importantly , γινώσκοντεςginōskontesyou must understand ὅτιhotithat ἐλεύσονταιeleusontaiwill come , ἐπ’ep’in ἐσχάτωνeschatōnlast τῶνtōnthe ἡμερῶνhēmerōndays ἐμπαῖκταιempaiktaiscoffers κατὰkata- τὰςtas- ἰδίαςidiasown ἐπιθυμίαςepithymiasevil desires . αὐτῶνautōntheir πορευόμενοιporeuomenoi[and] following
4καὶkai- λέγοντεςlegontesthey will ask . ΠοῦPou“ Where ἐστινestinis ἡhēthe ἐπαγγελίαepangeliapromise τῆςtēsof παρουσίαςparousiascoming ? ” αὐτοῦautouHis ἀφ’aph’Ever ἧςhēssince γὰρgar“ vvv οἱhoi[our] πατέρεςpateresfathers ἐκοιμήθησανekoimēthēsanfell asleep , πάνταpantaeverything οὕτωhoutōso διαμένειdiameneicontinues ἀπ’ap’from ἀρχῆςarchēs[the] beginning κτίσεωςktiseōsof creation . ”
5ΛανθάνειLanthaneioverlook γὰρgar[But] αὐτοὺςautousthey τοῦτοtoutothe fact that θέλονταςthelontasdeliberately ὅτιhoti. . . οὐρανοὶouranoi[the] heavens ἦσανēsanexisted ἔκπαλαιekpalailong ago καὶkaiand γῆgē[the] earth ἐξexout of ὕδατοςhydatoswater καὶkaiand δι’di’by ὕδατοςhydatoswater , συνεστῶσαsynestōsawas formed τῷtōby τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod’s λόγῳlogōword
6δι’di’by ὧνhōnwhich ὁhothe τότεtoteof that time κόσμοςkosmosworld ὕδατιhydati. . . . κατακλυσθεὶςkataklystheisin the flood ἀπώλετοapōletoperished
7οἱhoi- δὲdeAnd νῦνnynthe present οὐρανοὶouranoiheavens καὶkaiand ἡhē- γῆgēearth τῷtōby that αὐτοῦautouHis λόγῳlogōword τεθησαυρισμένοιtethēsaurismenoireserved εἰσὶeisiare πυρὶpyrifor fire , τηρούμενοιtēroumenoibeing kept εἰςeisfor ἡμέρανhēmeran[the] day κρίσεωςkriseōsof judgment καὶkaiand ἀπωλείαςapōleiasdestruction τῶνtōn- ἀσεβῶνasebōnof ungodly ἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōnmen .
8ἛνHen[this] one δὲde- τοῦτοtoutothing μὴmē{do} not {let} λανθανέτωlanthanetōescape your notice ὑμᾶςhymas. . . : ἀγαπητοίagapētoiBeloved ὅτιhoti- , μίαmiaa ἡμέραhēmeraday παρὰparaWith ΚυρίῳKyriō[the] Lord ὡςhōs[is] like χίλιαchiliaa thousand ἔτηetēyears , καὶkaiand χίλιαchiliaa thousand ἔτηetēyears ὡςhōs[are] like ἡμέραhēmeraday . μίαmiaa
9οὐouvvv βραδύνειbradyneiis not slow [in keeping] ὁhothe ΚύριοςKyriosThe Lord τῆςtēs[His] ἐπαγγελίαςepangeliaspromise ὥςhōsas τινεςtinessome βραδύτηταbradytētaslowness , ἡγοῦνταιhēgountaiunderstand ἀλλὰallabut μακροθυμεῖmakrothymeiis patient εἰςeiswith ἡμᾶςhēmasvvv μὴmēnot βουλόμενόςboulomenoswanting τιναςtinasanyone ἀπολέσθαιapolesthaito perish ἀλλὰallabut πάνταςpantaseveryone εἰςeisto μετάνοιανmetanoianrepentance . χωρῆσαιchōrēsaito come
10ἭξειHēxeiwill come δὲdeBut ᾗhē- ἡμέραhēmera[the] Day ΚυρίουKyriouof [the] Lord ὡςhōslike κλέπτηςkleptēsa thief . ἐνen- νυκτὶnyktinight ἐνen- ᾗhē- οὐρανοὶouranoiheavens ῥοιζηδὸνrhoizēdonwith a roar , παρελεύσονταιpareleusontaiwill disappear στοιχεῖαstoicheia[the] elements δὲde- καυσούμεναkausoumenaby fire , λυθήσονταιlythēsontaiwill be destroyed καὶkaiand γῆgē[the] earth καὶkaiand τὰta- ἐνen- αὐτῇautē[its] ἔργαergaworks κατακαήσεταιkatakaēsetaiis burned up ,
11ΤούτωνToutōn. . . οὖνounTherefore , πάντωνpantōn[Since] everything λυομένωνlyomenōnwill be destroyed ποταποὺςpotapouswhat kind of [people] δεῖdeiought ὑπάρχεινhyparcheinto be ? ὑμᾶςhymasyou ἐνenin ἁγίαιςhagiaisholiness ἀναστροφαῖςanastrophaisYou ought to conduct yourselves καὶkaiand εὐσεβείαιςeusebeiaisgodliness
12προσδοκῶνταςprosdokōntasas you anticipate καὶkaiand σπεύδονταςspeudontashasten τὴνtēnthe παρουσίανparousiancoming τῆςtēsof the τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , ἡμέραςhēmerasday δι’di’vvv ἣνhēnwhen οὐρανοὶouranoi[the] heavens πυρούμενοιpyroumenoiby fire λυθήσονταιlythēsontaiwill be destroyed καὶkaiand στοιχεῖαstoicheia[the] elements καυσούμεναkausoumenain the heat . τήκεταιtēketaiwill melt
13καινοὺςkainousa new δὲdeBut οὐρανοὺςouranousheaven καὶkaiand γῆνgēnearth , καινὴνkainēna new κατὰkatain keeping with τὸto- ἐπάγγελμαepangelmapromise , αὐτοῦautou[God’s] προσδοκῶμενprosdokōmenwe are looking forward to ἐνenvvv οἷςhoiswhere δικαιοσύνηdikaiosynērighteousness κατοικεῖkatoikeidwells .
14ΔιόDioTherefore , ἀγαπητοίagapētoibeloved , ταῦταtautathese things , προσδοκῶντεςprosdokōntesas you anticipate σπουδάσατεspoudasatemake every effort ἄσπιλοιaspiloispotless καὶkaiand ἀμώμητοιamōmētoiblameless αὐτῷautōin His [sight] . εὑρεθῆναιheurethēnaito be found ἐνenat εἰρήνῃeirēnēpeace —
15καὶkaiand τὴνtēn- τοῦtou- ΚυρίουKyriouLord’s ἡμῶνhēmōnour μακροθυμίανmakrothymianpatience σωτηρίανsōtērian[brings] salvation , ἡγεῖσθεhēgeistheConsider also that καθὼςkathōsjust as καὶkaialso ὁho- ἀγαπητὸςagapētosbeloved ἡμῶνhēmōnour ἀδελφὸςadelphosbrother ΠαῦλοςPaulosPaul κατὰkatawith τὴνtēnthe αὐτῷautō. . . . δοθεῖσανdotheisan[God] gave him σοφίανsophianwisdom ἔγραψενegrapsenwrote ὑμῖνhyminyou
16ὡςhōs[ He writes ] this way καὶkai. . . ἐνenin πάσαιςpasaisall ‹ταῖς›tais[his] ἐπιστολαῖςepistolaisletters , λαλῶνlalōnspeaking ἐνenin αὐταῖςautaisthem περὶperiabout τούτωνtoutōn[such matters] . ἐνenof οἷςhoiswhere ἐστίestiI have δυσνόητάdysnoētahard to understand , τιναtinaSome [parts] ἃhawhich οἱhoi- ἀμαθεῖςamatheisignorant καὶkaiand ἀστήρικτοιastēriktoiunstable [people] στρεβλοῦσινstreblousindistort , ὡςhōsas καὶkai[they do] τὰςtasthe λοιπὰςloipasrest of γραφὰςgraphas[the] Scriptures , πρὸςprosto τὴνtēn- ἰδίανidianown αὐτῶνautōntheir ἀπώλειανapōleiandestruction .
17ὙμεῖςHymeis[since] you οὖνounTherefore , ἀγαπητοίagapētoibeloved , προγινώσκοντεςproginōskontesalready know [these things] , φυλάσσεσθεphylassesthebe on your guard ἵναhinaso that μὴmēyou will not τῇtēby the τῶνtōnof the ἀθέσμωνathesmōnlawless πλάνῃplanēerror συναπαχθέντεςsynapachthentesbe carried away ἐκπέσητεekpesēte[and] fall from τοῦtou[your] ἰδίουidiou- στηριγμοῦstērigmousecure standing .
18αὐξάνετεauxanetegrow δὲdeBut ἐνenin χάριτιchariti[the] grace καὶkaiand γνώσειgnōseiknowledge τοῦtou- ΚυρίουKyriouLord ἡμῶνhēmōnof our καὶkaiand ΣωτῆροςSōtērosSavior ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist . αὐτῷautōTo Him [be] ἡhēthe δόξαdoxaglory καὶkaiboth νῦνnynnow καὶkaiand εἰςeisto ἡμέρανhēmeran[the] day αἰῶνοςaiōnosof eternity . ‹Ἀμήν›AmēnAmen .
