2καθὼςkathōsjust as παρέδοσανparedosanwere handed down ἡμῖνhēminto us οἱhoithey ἀπ’ap’by ἀρχῆςarchēsthe initial αὐτόπταιautoptaieyewitnesses καὶkaiand ὑπηρέταιhypēretaiservants γενόμενοιgenomenoi- τοῦtouof the λόγουlogouword .
3ἔδοξεedoxeit seemed good κἀμοὶkamoialso to me παρηκολουθηκότιparēkolouthēkotiTherefore, having carefully investigated ἄνωθενanōthenfrom the beginning , πᾶσινpasineverything ἀκριβῶςakribōs. . . καθεξῆςkathexēsan orderly account σοιsoifor you , γράψαιgrapsaito write κράτιστεkratistemost excellent ΘεόφιλεTheophileTheophilus ,
4ἵναhinaso that ἐπιγνῷςepignōsyou may know περὶperiof ὧνhōn- κατηχήθηςkatēchēthēsyou have been taught . λόγωνlogōn[the] things τὴνtēnthe ἀσφάλειανasphaleiancertainty
5ἘγένετοEgenetothere was ἐνenIn ταῖςtaisthe ἡμέραιςhēmeraistime ἩρῴδουHērōdouof Herod τοῦtouof the βασιλέωςbasileōsking τῆςtēs- ἸουδαίαςIoudaiasof Judea ἱερεύςhiereuspriest τιςtisa ὀνόματιonomatinamed ΖαχαρίαςZachariasZechariah , ἐξexwho belonged to ἐφημερίαςephēmerias[the] priestly division ἈβιάAbiaof Abijah , καὶkaiand γυνὴgynēwife αὐτῷautō[whose] ἐκek[was] τῶνtōna θυγατέρωνthygaterōndaughter ἈαρώνAarōnof Aaron . καὶkaivvv τὸtovvv ὄνομαonomavvv αὐτῆςautēsvvv ἘλισάβετElisabetElizabeth
6ἦσανēsanof them were δὲde- δίκαιοιdikaioirighteous ἀμφότεροιamphoteroiBoth ἐναντίονenantionin the sight of τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod , πορευόμενοιporeuomenoiwalking ἐνenin πάσαιςpasaisall ταῖςtaisthe ἐντολαῖςentolaiscommandments καὶkaiand δικαιώμασινdikaiōmasindecrees τοῦtouof the ΚυρίουKyriouLord . ἄμεμπτοιamemptoiblamelessly
7καὶkaiand οὐκoukno ἦνēnhad αὐτοῖςautoisthey τέκνονteknonchildren , καθότιkathotibecause - ἘλισάβετElisabetElizabeth ἦνēnwas στεῖραsteirabarren , καὶkaiand ἀμφότεροιamphoteroiboth προβεβηκότεςprobebēkoteswell along ἐνenin ταῖςtais- ἡμέραιςhēmeraisyears . αὐτῶνautōn- ἦσανēsanthey were
8ἘγένετοEgeneto. . . δὲdeOne day ἐνenin τῷ- ἱερατεύεινhierateueinwas serving as priest αὐτὸνautonhe ἐνen[and] τῇvvv τάξειtaxeiwas on duty τῆςtēswhile ἐφημερίαςephēmeriasdivision αὐτοῦautou[Zechariah’s] ἔναντιenantibefore τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod ,
9κατὰkataaccording to τὸtothe ἔθοςethoscustom τῆςtēsof the ἱερατείαςhierateiaspriesthood , ἔλαχεelachehe was chosen by lot , τοῦtou- θυμιᾶσαιthymiasai[and] burn incense . εἰσελθὼνeiselthōnto enter εἰςeis. . . τὸνtonthe ναὸνnaontemple τοῦtouof the ΚυρίουKyriouLord
10καὶkaiAnd πᾶνpanwhole τὸtothe πλῆθοςplēthoscongregation ἦνēnwas τοῦtou. . . λαοῦlaou. . . προσευχόμενονproseuchomenonpraying ἔξωexōoutside . τῇat the ὥρᾳhōrahour τοῦtouof the θυμιάματοςthymiamatosincense offering ,
11ὬφθηŌphthēappeared δὲdeJust then αὐτῷautōto [Zechariah] , ἄγγελοςangelosan angel ΚυρίουKyriouof [the] Lord ἑστὼςhestōsstanding ἐκekat δεξιῶνdexiōn[the] right side τοῦtouof the θυσιαστηρίουthysiastērioualtar τοῦtou- θυμιάματοςthymiamatosof incense .
12καὶkaiWhen ἐταράχθηetarachthēhe was startled ΖαχαρίαςZachariasZechariah ἰδώνidōnsaw [him] , καὶkaiand φόβοςphoboswith fear . ἐπέπεσενepepesengripped ἐπ’ep’. . . αὐτόνauton. . .
13εἰπὲeipesay δὲdeBut πρὸςprosto αὐτὸνautonhim , hothe ἄγγελοςangelosangel Μὴ“ {Do} not φοβοῦphoboube afraid , ΖαχαρίαZachariaZechariah , διότιdiotibecause εἰσηκούσθηeisēkousthēhas been heard . - δέησίςdeēsisprayer σουsouyour καὶkai- - γυνήgynēwife σουsouYour ἘλισάβετElisabetElizabeth γεννήσειgennēseiwill bear υἱόνhuiona son , σοιsoiyou καὶkaiand καλέσειςkaleseisyou are to give τὸtothe ὄνομαonomaname αὐτοῦautouhim ἸωάννηνIōannēnJohn .
14καὶkai- ἔσταιestaiHe will be χαράcharaa joy σοιsoito you , καὶkaiand ἀγαλλίασιςagalliasisdelight καὶkaiand πολλοὶpolloimany ἐπὶepiat τῇ- γενέσειgeneseibirth , αὐτοῦautouhis χαρήσονταιcharēsontaiwill rejoice
15ἔσταιestaihe will be γὰρgarfor μέγαςmegasgreat ἐνώπιονenōpionin the sight τοῦtou- ΚυρίουKyriouof [the] Lord καὶkaiWhen οἶνονoinonwine καὶkai[or] σίκεραsikerastrong drink , οὐouvvv μὴvvv πίῃpiēHe shall never take καὶkai[or] ΠνεύματοςPneumatosSpirit ἉγίουHagiou[with the] Holy πλησθήσεταιplēsthēsetaihe will be filled ἔτιetieven ἐκekfrom κοιλίαςkoiliaswomb . μητρὸςmētrosmother’s αὐτοῦautouhis
16καὶkai- πολλοὺςpollousMany τῶνtōnof the υἱῶνhuiōnsons ἸσραὴλIsraēlof Israel ἐπιστρέψειepistrepseihe will turn ἐπὶepiback to ΚύριονKyrion[the] Lord τὸνton- ΘεὸνTheonGod . αὐτῶνautōntheir
17καὶkaiAnd αὐτὸςautoshe προελεύσεταιproeleusetaiwill go on ἐνώπιονenōpionbefore αὐτοῦautou[the Lord] ἐνenin πνεύματιpneumati[the] spirit καὶkaiand δυνάμειdynameipower ἨλίουĒliouof Elijah , ἐπιστρέψαιepistrepsaito turn καρδίαςkardias[the] hearts πατέρωνpaterōnof [the] fathers ἐπὶepito τέκναtekna[their] children καὶkaiand ἀπειθεῖςapeitheis[the] disobedient ἐνento φρονήσειphronēsei[the] wisdom δικαίωνdikaiōnof [the] righteous — ἑτοιμάσαιhetoimasaito make ready ΚυρίῳKyriōfor [the] Lord . ” λαὸνlaona people κατεσκευασμένονkateskeuasmenonprepared
18ΚαὶKai- εἰπὲeipesay ΖαχαρίαςZachariasZechariah πρὸςpros. . . τὸνtonthe ἄγγελονangelonangel . ΚατὰKata“ vvv τίtiHow γνώσομαιgnōsomaican I be sure of τοῦτοtoutothis ? ” ἐγὼegōI γάρgar“ - εἰμιeimiam πρεσβύτηςpresbytēsan old man , καὶkaiand - γυνήgynēwife μουmoumy προβεβηκυῖαprobebēkuiais well along ἐνenin ταῖςtais- ἡμέραιςhēmeraisyears . ” αὐτῆςautēs-
19καὶkaiand ἀποκριθεὶςapokritheisreplied hothe ἄγγελοςangelosangel . εἶπενeipen. . . αὐτῷautō. . . ἘγώEgō“ I εἰμιeimiam ΓαβριὴλGabriēlGabriel , ” hothe παρεστηκὼςparestēkōsI stand ἐνώπιονenōpionin the presence of τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod , καὶkaiand ἀπεστάληνapestalēnI have been sent λαλῆσαιlalēsaito speak πρὸςprosto σὲseyou καὶkaiand εὐαγγελίσασθαίeuangelisasthaito bring you this good news σοιsoi. . . . ταῦταtauta. . .
20καὶkaiAnd ἰδοὺidounow ἔσῃesēyou will be σιωπῶνsiōpōnsilent καὶkaiand μὴvvv δυνάμενοςdynamenosunable λαλῆσαιlalēsaito speak ἄχριachriuntil ἧςhēsthe ἡμέραςhēmerasday γένηταιgenētaicomes to pass , ταῦταtauta[this] ἀνθ’anth’because ὧνhōn. . . οὐκoukvvv ἐπίστευσαςepisteusasyou did not believe τοῖςtois- λόγοιςlogoiswords , μουmoumy οἵτινεςhoitineswhich πληρωθήσονταιplērōthēsontaiwill be fulfilled εἰςeisat τὸνton- καιρὸνkaironproper time . ” αὐτῶνautōntheir
21ΚαὶKaiMeanwhile , ἦνēnwere hothe λαὸςlaospeople προσδοκῶνprosdokōnwaiting for τὸνton- ΖαχαρίανZacharianZechariah καὶkaiand ἐθαύμαζονethaumazonwondering ἐνenwhy τῷ- χρονίζεινchronizeintook so long αὐτόνautonhe ἐνenwhy τῷ- ναῷnaōtemple .
22ἐξελθὼνexelthōnhe came out δὲdeWhen οὐκoukvvv ἐδύνατοedynato[and] was unable λαλῆσαιlalēsaito speak αὐτοῖςautoisto them , καὶkai- ἐπέγνωσανepegnōsanthey realized ὅτιhoti- ὀπτασίανoptasiana vision ἑώρακενheōrakenhe had seen ἐνenin τῷthe ναῷnaōtemple . καὶkai- αὐτὸςautosHe ἦνēnkept διανεύωνdianeuōnmaking signs αὐτοῖςautoisto them καὶkaibut διέμενενdiemenenremained κωφόςkōphosspeechless .
23καὶkaiAnd ἐγένετοegeneto. . . ὡςhōswhen ἐπλήσθησανeplēsthēsanwere complete , αἱhaithe ἡμέραιhēmeraidays τῆςtēs- λειτουργίαςleitourgiasservice αὐτοῦautouof his ἀπῆλθενapēlthenhe returned εἰςeisvvv τὸνtonvvv οἶκονoikonhome . αὐτοῦautouvvv
24ΜετὰMetaAfter δὲde- ταύταςtautasthese τὰςtas- ἡμέραςhēmerasdays , συνέλαβενsynelabenbecame pregnant ἘλισάβετElisabetElizabeth - γυνὴgynēwife αὐτοῦautouhis καὶkaiand περιέκρυβενperiekrybenremained in seclusion ἑαυτὴνheautēn. . . . μῆναςmēnasmonths πέντεpentefor five
25λέγουσαlegousaShe declared , ὅτιhoti- Οὕτωouto[this] μοιmoifor me . πεποίηκενpepoiēkenhas done hothe ΚύριοςKyrios“ The Lord ἐνenIn ἡμέραιςhēmerais[these] days αἷςhais- ἐπεῖδενepeidenHe has shown me favor ἀφελεῖνapheleinand taken away τῷthe ὄνειδόςoneidosdisgrace μουmoumy ἐνenamong ἀνθρώποιςanthrōpoisthe people . ”
26ἐνenamong δὲde- τῷthe μηνὶmēnimonth , τῷ- ἕκτῳhektōsixth ἀπεστάληapestalēsent hothe ἄγγελοςangelosangel ΓαβριὴλGabriēlGabriel ἀπὸapo- τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod εἰςeisto πόλινpolina town τῆςtēs- ΓαλιλαίαςGalilaiasin Galilee - ὄνομαonomacalled Ναζαρὲτ,nazaretNazareth ,
27πρὸςprosto παρθένονparthenona virgin μεμνηστευμένηνmemnesteumenenpledged in marriage ἀνδρὶandrito a man - ὄνομαonomanamed ἸωσὴφIōsēphJoseph , ἐξex[who was] of οἴκουoikou[the] house ΔαυὶδDauidof David . καὶkaiAnd τὸtothe ὄνομαonomaname τῆςtēs- παρθένουparthenouvirgin’s ΜαριάμMariam[was] Mary .
28καὶkai- εἰσελθὼνeiselthōn[The angel] appeared hoThe ἄγγελοςangelosangel πρὸςprosto αὐτὴνautēnher εἰπὲeipesay ΧαῖρεChaire“ Greetings , κεχαριτωμένηkecharitōmenēyou who are highly favored ! hoThe ΚύριοςKyriosLord [is] μετὰmetawith σοῦsouyou . ” ΕὐλογημένηEulogēmenē“ Blessed are σὺsyyou ἐνenamong γυναιξίνgynaixinwomen ,
29the δὲde- ἰδοῦσαidousaseer διεταράχθηdietarachthē[Mary] was greatly troubled ἐπὶepiat τῷ[his] λόγῳlogōwords αὐτοῦautouHim καὶkaiand διελογίζετοdielogizetowondered ποταπὸςpotaposwhat kind εἴηeiēmight be . hothe ἀσπασμὸςaspasmosgreeting οὗτοςhoutosthis
30καὶkaiSo εἶπενeipentold hothe ἄγγελοςangelosangel αὐτῇautēher , Μὴ“ {Do} not φοβοῦphoboube afraid , ΜαριάμMariamMary , εὗρεςheuresyou have found γὰρgarfor χάρινcharinfavor παρὰparawith τῷ- ΘεῷTheōGod .
31καὶkaivvv ἰδοὺidouBehold , συλλήψῃsullepseyou will conceive ἐνen. . . γαστρὶgastri. . . καὶkaiand τέξῃtexēgive birth to υἱόνhuiona son , καὶkaiand καλέσειςkaleseisyou are to give τὸtothe ὄνομαonomaname αὐτοῦautouHim ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus .
32οὗτοςhoutosHe ἔσταιestaiwill be μέγαςmegasgreat καὶkaiand ΥἱὸςHuios[the] Son ὙψίστουHypsistouof [the] Most High . κληθήσεταιklēthēsetaiwill be called καὶkaiand δώσειdōseiwill give αὐτῷautōHim ΚύριοςKyriosLord hoThe ΘεὸςTheosGod τὸνtonthe θρόνονthrononthrone ΔαυὶδDauidDavid , τοῦtou- πατρὸςpatrosfather αὐτοῦautouof His
33καὶkaiand βασιλεύσειbasileuseiHe will reign ἐπὶepiover τὸνtonthe οἶκονoikonhouse ἸακὼβIakōbof Jacob εἰςeisvvv τοὺςtousvvv αἰῶναςaiōnasforever . καὶkai- τῆςtēs- βασιλείαςbasileiaskingdom αὐτοῦautouHis οὐκouknever ἔσταιestaiwill τέλοςtelosend ! ”
34εἰπὲeipesay δὲde“ - ΜαριὰμMariamMary πρὸςpros- τὸνtonthe ἄγγελονangelonangel , ΠῶςPōsHow ἔσταιestaican this be , ” μοιmoito me τοῦτοtoutovvv ἐπεὶepei“ since ἄνδραandra. . . ? ” οὐouvvv γινώσκωginōskōI am a virgin
35ΚαὶKai- ἀποκριθεὶςapokritheisreplied hoThe ἄγγελοςangelosangel εἶπενeipen. . . αὐτῇautē. . . , ΠνεῦμαPneumaSpirit ἍγιονHagion“ [The] Holy ἐπελεύσεταιepeleusetaiwill come ἐπὶepiupon σέseyou , καὶkaiand δύναμιςdynamis[the] power ὙψίστουHypsistouof [the] Most High ἐπισκιάσειepiskiaseiwill overshadow σοιsoiyou . διὸdioSo καὶkai. . . τὸtothe γεννώμενονgennōmenonto be born ἅγιονhagionHoly One κληθήσεταιklēthēsetaiwill be called ΥἱὸςHuios[the] Son ΘεοῦTheouof God .

50καὶkai- τὸto- ἔλεοςeleosmercy αὐτοῦautouHis εἰςeis[extends] γενεὰςgeneasfrom generation γενεῶνgeneonfrom generation τοῖςtoisto those φοβουμένοιςphoboumenoiswho fear αὐτόνautonHim ,
51Ἐποίησεepoiesehas done κράτοςkratosmighty deeds ἐνenwith βραχίονιbrachioniarm ; αὐτοῦautouHis διεσκόρπισενdieskorpisenHe has scattered ὑπερηφάνουςhyperēphanous[those who are] proud διανοίᾳdianoiain [the] thoughts καρδίαςkardiashearts . αὐτῶνautōnof their
52καθεῖλεkatheileHe has brought down δυνάσταςdynastasrulers ἀπὸapofrom θρόνωνthronōn[their] thrones , καὶkai[but] ὕψωσεupsosehas exalted ταπεινούςtapeinous[the] humble .
53πεινῶνταςpeinōntas[the] hungry ἐνέπλησενeneplēsenHe has filled ἀγαθῶνagathōnwith good things , καὶkai[but] πλουτοῦνταςploutountas[the] rich {away} ἐξαπέστειλεexapesteilehas sent κενούςkenousempty .
54ἀντελάβετοantelabetoHe has helped ἸσραὴλIsraēlIsrael , παιδὸςpaidosservant αὐτοῦautouHis μνησθῆναιmnēsthēnairemembering ἐλέουςeleousto be merciful ,
55καθὼςkathōsas ἐλάλησεelaleseHe promised πρὸςprosto τοὺςtous- πατέραςpaterasfathers , ἡμῶνhēmōnour τῷ- ἈβραὰμAbraamto Abraham καὶkaiand τῷ- σπέρματιspermatidescendants αὐτοῦautouhis εἰςeisvvv τὸνtonvvv αἰῶναaiōnaforever . ”
