1ΤεκνίαTeknialittle children , μουmoumy ταῦταtautathese things γράφωgraphōI am writing ὑμῖνhyminto you ἵναhinaso that μὴmēvvv ἁμάρτητεhamartēteyou will not sin . καὶkai[But] ἐάνeanif τιςtisanyone ἁμάρτῃhamartēdoes sin , ΠαράκλητονParaklētonan advocate ἔχομενechomenwe have πρὸςprosbefore τὸνtonthe ΠατέραPateraFather — ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus ΧριστὸνChristonChrist , δίκαιονdikaion[the] Righteous [One] .
2καὶkai- αὐτὸςautosHe Himself ἱλασμόςhilasmos[the] atoning sacrifice ἐστίestiI have περὶperifor τῶνtōn- ἁμαρτιῶνhamartiōnsins , ἡμῶνhēmōnour οὐounot περὶperifor τῶνtōn- ἡμετέρωνhēmeterōnours δὲdeand μόνονmonononly ἀλλὰallabut καὶkaialso περὶperifor ὅλουholouof [the] whole τοῦtouthe [sins] κόσμουkosmouworld .
3ΚαὶKai- ἐνenBy τούτῳtoutōthis γινώσκομενginōskomenwe can be sure ὅτιhotithat ἐγνώκαμενegnōkamenwe have come to know αὐτόνautonHim : ἐὰνeanif τὰςtas- ἐντολὰςentolascommandments . αὐτοῦautouHis τηρῶμενtērōmenwe keep
4ὁhoIf anyone λέγωνlegōnsays , ἜγνωκαEgnōka“ I know αὐτόνautonHim , ” καὶkai[but] τὰςtas- ἐντολὰςentolascommandments , αὐτοῦautouHis μὴmēvvv τηρῶνtērōndoes not keep ψεύστηςpseustēsa liar , ἐστίestiI have καὶkaiand ἐνenin τούτῳtoutōhim . ἡhēthe ἀλήθειαalētheiatruth οὐκouknot ἔστινestinis
5ὃςhosif anyone δ’d’But ἂνan. . . τηρῇtērēkeeps αὐτοῦautouHis τὸνton- λόγονlogonword , ἀληθῶςalēthōs. . . ἐνenin τούτῳtoutōhim . ἡhēthe ἀγάπηagapēlove τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God τετελείωταιteteleiōtaihas been truly perfected ἐνenin τούτῳtoutōhim . γινώσκομενginōskomenwe know ὅτιhotithat ἐνenin αὐτῷautōHim : ἐσμενesmenwe are
6ὁhoWhoever λέγωνlegōnclaims ἐνenin αὐτῷautōHim μένεινmeneinto abide ὀφείλειopheileimust καθὼςkathōsas ἐκεῖνοςekeinos[Jesus] περιεπάτησε,periepatesewalked . καὶkai- αὐτὸςautos. . . οὕτωhoutōso περιπατεῖνperipateinwalked .
7ἀδελφοίadelphoiBrothers , οὐκoukvvv ἐντολὴνentolēncommandment , καινὴνkainēna new γράφωgraphōI am not writing ὑμῖνhyminto you ἀλλ’all’but ἐντολὴνentolēncommandment , παλαιὰνpalaianan old ἣνhēnwhich εἴχετεeicheteyou have had ἀπ’ap’from ἀρχῆςarchēs[the] beginning . ἡhē[This] ἐντολὴentolēcommandment ἡhē. . . παλαιάpalaia. . . ἐστινestinis ὁhothe λόγοςlogosmessage ὃνhon- ἠκούσατεēkousateyou have heard . ἀπ’ap’from ἀρχῆςarchēs[the] beginning .
8πάλινpalinThen again , ἐντολὴνentolēncommandment , καινὴνkainēna new γράφωgraphōI am also writing ὑμῖνhyminto you ὅhowhich ἐστινestinis ἀληθὲςalēthestrue ἐνenin αὐτῷautōHim καὶkaiand also ἐνenin ὑμῖνhyminyou . ὅτιhotiFor ἡhēthe σκοτίαskotiadarkness παράγεταιparagetaiis fading καὶkaiand τὸtothe φῶςphōslight τὸto- ἀληθινὸνalēthinontrue ἤδηēdēis already φαίνειphaineishining .
9ὉHoIf anyone λέγωνlegōnclaims ἐνenin τῷtōthe φωτὶphōtilight εἶναιeinaito be καὶkai[but] τὸνton- ἀδελφὸνadelphonbrother , αὐτοῦautouhis μισῶνmisōnhates ἐνenin τῇtēthe σκοτίᾳskotiadarkness . ἐστὶνestinhe is ἕωςheōsstill ἄρτιarti. . .
10ὁhoWhoever ἀγαπῶνagapōnloves τὸνton- ἀδελφὸνadelphonbrother αὐτοῦautouhis ἐνenin τῷtōthe φωτὶphōtilight , μένειmeneiremains καὶkaiand σκάνδαλονskandaloncause of stumbling ἐνenin αὐτῷautōhim . οὐκoukno ἔστινestinthere is
11ὁhowhoever δὲdeBut μισῶνmisōnhates τὸνton- ἀδελφὸνadelphonbrother αὐτοῦautouhis ἐνenin τῇtēthe σκοτίᾳskotiadarkness ἐστίestiI have καὶkaiand ἐνenin τῇtēthe σκοτίᾳskotiadarkness . περιπατεῖperipateiwalks καὶkaiand οὐκoukvvv οἶδεoideknows ποῦpouwhere ὑπάγειhypageihe is going , ὅτιhotibecause ἡhēthe σκοτίαskotiadarkness ἐτύφλωσεetuphlosehas blinded τοὺςtous- ὀφθαλμοὺςophthalmouseyes . αὐτοῦautouhis

14ἜγραψαEgrapsaI have written ὑμῖνhyminto you , πατέρεςpateresfathers , ὅτιhotibecause ἐγνώκατεegnōkateyou know τὸνtonHim who [is] ἀπ’ap’from ἀρχῆςarchēs[the] beginning . ἜγραψαEgrapsaI have written ὑμῖνhyminto you , νεανίσκοιneaniskoiyoung men , ὅτιhotibecause ἰσχυροίischyroistrong , ἐστεesteyou are καὶkaiand ὁhothe λόγοςlogosword τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God ἐνenin ὑμῖνhyminyou , μένειmeneiabides καὶkaiand νενικήκατεnenikēkateyou have overcome τὸνtonthe πονηρόνponēronevil [one] .
15ΜὴMē{Do} not ἀγαπᾶτεagapatelove τὸνtonthe κόσμονkosmonworld μηδὲmēde[or] τὰtaanything ἐνenin τῷtōthe κόσμῳkosmōworld . ἐάνeanIf τιςtisanyone ἀγαπᾷagapaloves τὸνtonthe κόσμονkosmonworld , οὐκouknot ἔστινestinis ἡhēthe ἀγάπηagapēlove τοῦtouof the ΠατρὸςPatrosFather ἐνenin αὐτῷautōhim .
16ὅτιhotiFor πᾶνpanall τὸtothat [is] ἐνenin τῷtōthe κόσμῳkosmōworld — ἡhēthe ἐπιθυμίαepithymiadesires τῆςtēsof the σαρκὸςsarkosflesh , καὶkai- ἡhēthe ἐπιθυμίαepithymiadesires τῶνtōnof the ὀφθαλμῶνophthalmōneyes , καὶkaiand ἡhēthe ἀλαζονεία*alazoneiapride τοῦtouof βίουbioulife — οὐκouknot ἔστινestinis ἐκekfrom τοῦtouthe πατρόςpatrosFather ἀλλ’all’but ἐκekfrom τοῦtouthe κόσμουkosmouworld . ἐστίestiI have
17καὶkai- ὁhoThe κόσμοςkosmosworld παράγεταιparagetaiis passing away , καὶkai[along with] ἡhē- ἐπιθυμίαepithymiadesires ; αὐτοῦautouits ὁhowhoever δὲdebut ποιῶνpoiōndoes τὸtothe θέλημαthelēmawill τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God μένειmeneiremains εἰςeisvvv τὸνtonvvv αἰῶναaiōnaforever .
18ΠαιδίαPaidiaChildren , ἐσχάτηeschatē[the] last ὥραhōrahour ; ἐστίestiI have καὶkaiand καθὼςkathōsjust as ἠκούσατεēkousateyou have heard ὅτιhotithat ὁhowhoever ἀντίχριστοςantichristosthe antichrist ἔρχεταιerchetaiis coming , καὶkaiso νῦνnynnow ἀντίχριστοιantichristoiantichrists πολλοὶpolloimany γεγόνασινgegonasinhave appeared . ὅθενhothenThis is how γινώσκομενginōskomenwe know ὅτιhoti- ἐσχάτηeschatē[the] last ὥραhōrahour . ἐστίνestinit is
19ἐξexfrom ἡμῶνhēmōnus , ἐξελθὼνexelthōnhe came out ἀλλ’all’but οὐκouk. . . ἦσανēsanthey did not belong ἐξex. . . ἡμῶνhēmōnto us . εἰeiif γὰρgarFor ἦσανēsanthey had belonged ἐξexto ἡμῶνhēmōnus , μεμενήκεισανmemenēkeisanthey would have remained ἂνanvvv μεθ’meth’with ἡμῶνhēmōnus . ἀλλ’all’But ἵναhina[their departure] φανερωθῶσινphanerōthōsinmade it clear ὅτιhotithat οὐκouknone of them εἰσὶeisiare πάντεςpantesvvv ἐξex. . . ἡμῶνhēmōnus .
20ΚαὶKaihowever , ὑμεῖςhymeisYou , χρῖσμαchrisma[an] anointing ἔχετεechetehave ἀπὸapofrom τοῦtouthe ἉγίουHagiouHoly [One] , καὶkaiand οἴδατεoidateall of you know the truth πάνταpanta-
21οὐκoukvvv ἔγραψαegrapsaI have not written ὑμῖνhyminto you ὅτιhotibecause οὐκoukvvv οἴδατεoidateyou lack knowledge τὴνtēnof the ἀλήθειανalētheiantruth , ἀλλ’all’but ὅτιhotibecause οἴδατεoidateyou have αὐτήνautēnit , καὶkaiand ὅτιhotibecause πᾶνpan- ψεῦδοςpseudoslie ἐκekfrom τῆςtēsthe ἀληθείαςalētheiastruth . οὐκoukno ἐστίestiI have
22ΤίςTisWho ἐστινestinis ὁhothe ψεύστηςpseustēsliar , εἰeiif μὴmē[it is] not ὁhothe [one who] ἀρνούμενοςarnoumenosdenies ὅτιhotithat ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus οὐκouk. . . ἔστινestinis ὁhothe ΧριστόςChristosChrist ? οὗτόςhoutosThis ἐστινestinis ὁhothe ἀντίχριστοςantichristosantichrist , ὁhowho ἀρνούμενοςarnoumenosdenies τὸνtonthe ΠατέραPateraFather καὶkaiand τὸνtonthe ΥἱόνHuionSon .
23πᾶςpasWhoever ὁho. . . ἀρνούμενοςarnoumenosdenies τὸνtonthe ΥἱὸνHuionSon οὐδὲoudevvv τὸνtonthe ΠατέραPateraFather , ἔχειecheidoes not have
24ὙμεῖςHymeis[As for] you , οὖνountherefore , ὃho{let} what ἠκούσατεēkousateyou have heard ἀπ’ap’from ἀρχῆςarchēs[the] beginning ἐνenin ὑμῖνhyminyou . μενέτωmenetōremain ἐὰνeanIf ἐνenin ὑμῖνhyminyou . μείνῃmeinē[does] ὃho[it] ἀπ’ap’. . . ἀρχῆςarchēs. . . ἠκούσατεēkousate. . . καὶkaivvv ὑμεῖςhymeisyou ἐνen. . . τῷtōthe ΥἱῷHuiōSon καὶkaiand ἐνenin τῷtōthe ΠατρὶPatriFather . μενεῖτεmeneitewill also remain
25καὶkaivvv αὕτηhautēthis ἐστὶνestinis ἡhēthe ἐπαγγελίαepangeliapromise ἣνhēnthat αὐτὸςautosHe Himself ἐπηγγείλατοepēngeilatomade ἡμῖνhēminto us : τὴνtēn- ζωὴνzōēnlife . τὴνtēn- αἰώνιονaiōnioneternal
26ΤαῦταTautathese things ἔγραψαegrapsaI have written ὑμῖνhyminto you περὶperiabout τῶνtōnthose who are πλανώντωνplanōntōntrying to deceive ὑμᾶςhymasyou .
27καὶkaiAnd ὑμεῖςhymeis[as for] you , τὸtothe χρῖσμαchrismaanointing ὃho- ἐλάβατεelabateDid you receive ἀπ’ap’from αὐτοῦautouHim ἐνenin ὑμῖνhyminyou , μένειmeneiremains καὶkaiand οὐounot χρείανchreianneed ἔχετεecheteyou do ἵναhina- τιςtisanyone διδάσκῃdidaskēto teach ὑμᾶςhymasyou . ἀλλ’all’But ὡςhōsjust as τὸtovvv αὐτῷautōHim χρῖσμαchrismaanointing διδάσκειdidaskeiteaches ὑμᾶςhymasyou περὶperiabout πάντωνpantōnall things , καὶkai[so] ἀληθέςalēthestrue ἐστίestiI have καὶkaiand οὐκoukvvv ἐστίestiI have ψεῦδοςpseudosgenuine καὶkaiand καθὼςkathōsas ἐδίδαξενedidaxenhave been taught . ὑμᾶςhymasyou μενεῖτεmeneitewill also remain ἐνenin αὐτῷautōHim
28καὶkai[so] νῦνnynnow , τεκνίαteknialittle children , μένετεmeneteremain ἐνenin αὐτῷautō[Christ] , ἵναhinaso that ὅτανhotanwhen φανερωθῇphanerōthēHe appears , ἔχομενechomenwe have παρρησίανparrēsianconfident καὶkaiand μὴmēvvv αἰσχυνθῶμενaischynthōmenunashamed ἀπ’ap’before αὐτοῦautouHim ἐνenat τῇtē- παρουσίᾳparousiacoming . αὐτοῦautouHis
29ἘὰνEanIf εἰδῆτεeidēteyou know ὅτιhotithat δίκαιόςdikaiosrighteous , ἐστίestiI have γινώσκετεginōsketeyou also know ὅτιhotithat πᾶςpaseveryone ὁhowho ποιῶνpoiōnpractices τὴνtēn- δικαιοσύνηνdikaiosynēnrighteousness ἐξexof αὐτοῦautouHim . γεγέννηταιgegennētaihas been born
