3οὗτοςhoutosThis γάρgar- ἐστινestinis ὁhohe who ῥηθεὶςrhētheiswas spoken of διὰdiathrough ἨσαΐουĒsaiouIsaiah τοῦtouthe προφήτουprophētouprophet λέγοντοςlegontos- : ΦωνὴPhōnē“ [A] voice βοῶντοςboōntosof one calling ἐνenin τῇtēthe ἐρήμῳerēmōwilderness , ἙτοιμάσατεHetoimasate‘ Prepare τὴνtēnthe ὁδὸνhodonway ΚυρίουKyrioufor [the] Lord , εὐθείαςeutheiasstraight ποιεῖτεpoieitemake τὰςtas- τρίβουςtribouspaths αὐτοῦautoufor Him .’”
4ΑὐτὸςAutos- δὲde- ὁho- ἸωάννηςIōannēsJohn εἶχενeichenwore τὸto- ἔνδυμαendymaa garment αὐτοῦautou- ἀπὸapoof τριχῶνtrichōnhair , καμήλουkamēloucamel’s καὶkaiwith ζώνηνzōnēnbelt δερματίνηνdermatinēn[a] leather περὶperiaround τὴνtēn- ὀσφὺνosphynwaist . αὐτοῦautouhis ἡhē- δὲde- τροφὴtrophēfood ἦνēnwas αὐτοῦautouHis ἀκρίδεςakrideslocusts καὶkaiand μέλιmelihoney . ἄγριονagrionwild
5ΤότεTote- ἐξεπορεύετοexeporeueto[People] went out πρὸςprosto αὐτὸνautonhim ἹεροσόλυμαHierosolyma[from] Jerusalem καὶkaiand πᾶσαpasaall ἡhē- ἸουδαίαIoudaiaJudea καὶkaiand πᾶσαpasawhole ἡhēthe περίχωροςperichōrosregion around τοῦtouthe ἸορδάνουIordanouJordan .
6καὶkai- ἐβαπτίζοντοebaptizontothey were baptized ἐνenin τῷtōthe ἸορδάνῃIordanēJordan ποταμῷpotamōRiver . ὑπ’hyp’by αὐτοῦautouhim ἐξομολογούμενοιexomologoumenoiConfessing τὰςtas- ἁμαρτίαςhamartiassins , αὐτῶνautōntheir
7ἸδὼνIdōn[John] saw δὲdeBut when πολλοὺςpollousmany τῶνtōnof the ΦαρισαίωνPharisaiōnPharisees καὶkaiand ΣαδδουκαίωνSaddoukaiōnSadducees ἐρχομένουςerchomenouscoming ἐπὶepito τὸto- βάπτισμαbaptismabaptism , ‹αὐτοῦ›autouhis [place of] εἶπενeipenhe said αὐτοῖςautoisto them , ΓεννήματαGennēmata“ [You] brood ἐχιδνῶνechidnōnof vipers , τίςtiswho ὑπέδειξενhypedeixenwarned ὑμῖνhyminyou φυγεῖνphygeinto flee ἀπὸapofrom τῆςtēsthe μελλούσηςmellousēscoming ὀργῆςorgēswrath ?
8ποιήσατεpoiēsateProduce οὖνounthen , καρπὸνkarponfruit , ἄξιονaxionin keeping with τῆςtēs- μετανοίαςmetanoiasrepentance .
9καὶkaiAnd μὴmē{do} not δόξητεdoxētepresume λέγεινlegeinto say ἐνento ἑαυτοῖςheautoisyourselves , ΠατέραPatera[as our] father . ’ ἔχομενechomen‘ We have τὸνton- ἈβραάμAbraamAbraham λέγωlegōI tell γὰρgarFor ὑμῖνhyminyou ὅτιhotithat δύναταιdynataican ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod ἐκekout of τῶνtōn- λίθωνlithōnstones τούτωνtoutōnthese ἐγεῖραιegeirairaise up τέκναteknachildren τῷtōfor ἈβραάμAbraamAbraham .
10ἤδηēdēvvv δὲdevvv ἡhēThe ἀξίνηaxinēaxe πρὸςprosat τὴνtēnthe ῥίζανrhizanroot τῶνtōnof the δένδρωνdendrōntrees , κεῖταιkeitailies ready πᾶνpanevery οὖνounand δένδρωνdendrōntrees , μὴmēvvv ποιοῦνpoiounthat does not produce καρπὸνkarponfruit καλὸνkalongood ἐκκόπτεταιekkoptetaiwill be cut down καὶkaiand εἰςeisinto πῦρpyr[the] fire . βάλλεταιballetaithrown
11ἘγὼEgōI μὲνmen- ὑμᾶςhymasyou βαπτίζωbaptizōbaptize ἐνenwith ὕδατιhydatiwater εἰςeisfor μετάνοιανmetanoianrepentance , ὁho- δὲdebut ὀπίσωopisōafter μουmoume ἐρχόμενοςerchomenoswill come ἰσχυρότερόςischyroterosmore powerful μούmouthan I , ἐστινestin[One] οὗhouwhose οὐκouknot εἰμὶeimiI am ἱκανὸςhikanosworthy τὰta- ὑποδήματαhypodēmatasandals βαστάσαιbastasaito carry . αὐτὸςautosHe ὑμᾶςhymasyou βαπτίσειbaptiseiwill baptize ἐνenwith ΠνεύματιPneumatiSpirit ἉγίῳHagiō[the] Holy καὶkaiand πυρίpyriwith fire .
12οὗhouHis τὸto- πτύονptyonwinnowing fork [is] ἐνenin τῇtē- χειρὶcheirihand αὐτοῦautouHis καὶkai- διακαθαριεῖdiakatharieito clear τὴνtēn- ἅλωναhalōnathreshing floor αὐτοῦautouHis καὶkaiand συνάξειsynaxeito gather τὸνton- σῖτονsitonwheat αὐτοῦautouHis εἰςeisinto τὴνtēnthe ἀποθήκηνapothēkēnbarn ; τὸtothe δὲdebut ἄχυρονachyronchaff κατακαύσειkatakauseiHe will burn up πυρὶpyrifire . ” ἀσβέστῳasbestōwith unquenchable
13ΤότεToteAt that time παραγίνεταιparaginetaicame ὁho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ἀπὸapofrom τῆςtēs- ΓαλιλαίαςGalilaiasGalilee ἐπὶepito τὸνtonthe ἸορδάνηνIordanēnJordan πρὸςpros- τὸνton- ἸωάννηνIōannēn- τοῦtou- βαπτισθῆναιbaptisthēnaito be baptized ὑπ’hyp’by αὐτοῦautou[John] .
14ὁho- δὲdeBut ‹Ἰωάννης›IōannēsJohn διεκώλυενdiekōlyentried to prevent αὐτὸνautonHim , λέγωνlegōnsaying , ἘγὼEgō“ I χρείανchreianneed ἔχωechōvvv ὑπὸhypoby σοῦsouYou , βαπτισθῆναιbaptisthēnaito be baptized καὶkaiand σὺsy{do} You ἔρχῃerchēcome πρόςprosto μεmeme ? ”
15ἈποκριθεὶςApokritheisreplied δὲde- ὁho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus εἶπενeipen. . . ‹πρὸςpros. . . αὐτόν›auton. . . . ἌφεςAphes“ Let [it] be so ἄρτιartinow , ” οὕτωouto[this] γὰρgar- πρέπονpreponfitting ἐστὶνestin“ It is ἡμῖνhēminfor us πληρῶσαιplērōsaito fulfill πᾶσανpasanall δικαιοσύνηνdikaiosynēnrighteousness τότεtoteThen ἀφίησινaphiēsin[John] permitted αὐτόνautonHim .
16καὶkai- ΒαπτισθεὶςBaptistheis[Jesus] was baptized , ὁho- ἸησοῦςIēsousHe ἀνέβηanebēwent up εὐθὺςeuthys. . . ἀπὸapoout of τοῦtouthe ὕδατοςhydatoswater . καὶkai- ἰδοὺidouSuddenly ἀνεῴχθησανaneōchthēsanbroke open , αὐτῷautō[whose] οἱhoithe οὐρανοίouranoiheavens καὶkaiand εἶδενeidenHe saw [τὸ]tothe ΠνεῦμαPneumaSpirit [τοῦ]touof ΘεοῦTheouGod καταβαῖνονkatabainondescending ὡσεὶhōseilike περιστερὰνperisterana dove [καὶ]kaiand ἐρχόμενονerchomenonresting ἐπ’ep’on αὐτόνautonHim .
17καὶkaiAnd ἰδοὺidou- φωνὴphōnēa voice ἐκekfrom τῶνtōn- οὐρανῶνouranōnheaven λέγουσαlegousasaid , ΟὗτόςHoutos“ This ἐστινestinis ὁho- ΥἱόςHuiosSon , μουmouMy ὁho- ἀγαπητόςagapētosbeloved ἐνenin ᾧhōwhom εὐδόκησαeudokēsaI am well pleased ! ”
