2ΠᾶσανPasanpure χαρὰνcharanjoy , ἡγήσασθεhēgēsastheConsider [it] ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , μουmoumy ὅτανhotanwhen πειρασμοῖςpeirasmoistrials περιπέσητεperipesēteyou encounter ποικίλοιςpoikiloisof many kinds ,
3γινώσκοντεςginōskontesbecause you know ὅτιhotithat τὸtothe δοκίμιονdokimiontesting ὑμῶνhymōnof your τῆςtēs- πίστεωςpisteōsfaith κατεργάζεταιkatergazetaidevelops ὑπομονήνhypomonēnperseverance .
4- δὲde- ὑπομονὴhypomonēperseverance ἔργονergon[its] work , τέλειονteleionto finish ἐχέτωechetōAllow ἵναhinaso that ἦτεēteyou may be τέλειοιteleioimature καὶkaiand ὁλόκληροιholoklēroicomplete , ἐνen- μηδενὶmēdeni[anything] . λειπόμενοιleipomenoi[not] lacking
5ΕἰEiif δέdeNow τιςtisany ὑμῶνhymōnof you λείπεταιleipetailacks σοφίαςsophiaswisdom , αἰτείτωaiteitōhe should ask παρὰpara. . . τοῦtouwho διδόντοςdidontosgives ΘεοῦTheouGod , πᾶσινpasinto all ἁπλῶςhaplōsgenerously καὶkai- μὴwithout ὀνειδίζοντοςoneidizontosfinding fault , καὶkaiand δοθήσεταιdothēsetaiit will be given αὐτῷautōto him .
6αἰτείτωaiteitōhe must ask δὲdeBut ἐνenin πίστειpisteifaith , μηδὲνmēdenwithout διακρινόμενοςdiakrinomenosdoubting , hohe who γὰρgarbecause διακρινόμενοςdiakrinomenosdoubting , ἔοικεeoikeis like κλύδωνιklydōnia wave θαλάσσηςthalassēsof [the] sea , ἀνεμιζομένῳanemizomenōblown καὶkaiand ῥιπιζομένῳrhipizomenōtossed by the wind .
7μὴ{should} not γὰρgar- οἰέσθωoiesthōexpect ho- ἄνθρωποςanthrōposman ἐκεῖνοςekeinosThat ὅτιhoti- λήψεταίlepsetaito receive τιtianything παρὰparafrom τοῦtouthe ΚυρίουKyriouLord .
8ἀνὴρanērman , δίψυχοςdipsychos[He is] a double-minded ἀκατάστατοςakatastatosunstable ἐνenin πάσαιςpasaisall ταῖςtais- ὁδοῖςhodoisways . αὐτοῦautouhis
9ΚαυχάσθωKauchasthōshould exult δὲdeBut hothe [one who is] ἀδελφὸςadelphosbrother ho- ταπεινὸςtapeinosin humble circumstances ἐνenin τῷ- ὕψειhypseihigh position . αὐτοῦautouhis
10hothe [one who is] δὲdeBut πλούσιοςplousiosrich ἐνen[should exult] in τῇ- ταπεινώσειtapeinōseilow position , αὐτοῦautouhis ὅτιhotibecause ὡςhōslike ἄνθοςanthosa flower χόρτουchortouof the field . παρελεύσεταιpareleusetaihe will pass away
11ἀνέτειλεaneteilerises γὰρgarFor hothe ἥλιοςhēliossun σὺνsynwith τῷ- καύσωνιkausōniscorching heat καὶkaiand ἐξήρανεexeranewithers τὸνtonthe χόρτονchortonplant ; καὶkai- τὸto- ἄνθοςanthosflower αὐτοῦautouits ἐξέπεσε,exepesefalls καὶkai- [its] εὐπρέπειαeuprepeiabeauty τοῦtou. . . προσώπουprosōpou. . . αὐτοῦautou. . . ἀπώλετοapōletois lost . οὕτωhoutōso καὶkaitoo , hothe πλούσιοςplousiosrich [man] ἐνenin the midst of ταῖςtais- πορείαιςporeiaispursuits . αὐτοῦautouhis μαρανθήσεταιmaranthēsetaiwill fade away
12ΜακάριοςMakariosBlessed [is the] ἀνὴρanērman ὃςhoswho ὑπομένειhypomeneiperseveres πειρασμόνpeirasmonunder trial , ὅτιhotibecause δόκιμοςdokimosstood the test , γενόμενοςgenomenoswhen he has λήψεταιlepsetaito receive τὸνtonthe στέφανονstephanoncrown τῆςtēs- ζωῆςzōēsof life ὃνhonthat ἐπηγγείλατοepēngeilato[God] has promised ho- ΚύριοςKyriosLord τοῖςtoisto those who ἀγαπῶσινagapōsinlove αὐτόνautonHim .
13ΜηδεὶςMēdeisno one πειραζόμενοςpeirazomenosWhen tempted , λεγέτωlegetōshould say , ὅτιhoti“ - ἈπὸApovvv ΘεοῦTheouGod πειράζομαιpeirazomaiis tempting me . ” ho- γὰρgarFor ΘεὸςTheosGod ἀπείραστόςapeirastoscannot be tempted ἐστίestiI have κακῶνkakōnby evil , πειράζειpeirazeidoes He tempt δὲdeBut αὐτὸςautosvvv οὐδέναoudena[anyone] .
14ἕκαστοςhekastoseach one δὲdeBut πειράζεταιpeirazetaiis tempted ὑπὸhypo[when] by τῆςtēs[his] ἰδίαςidiasown ἐπιθυμίαςepithymiasevil desires ἐξελκόμενοςexelkomenoshe is lured away καὶkaiand δελεαζόμενοςdeleazomenosenticed .
15εἶταeitaThen - ἐπιθυμίαepithymia[after] desire συλλαβοῦσαsyllabousahas conceived , τίκτειtikteiit gives birth to ἁμαρτίανhamartiansin ; - δὲdeand ἁμαρτίαhamartiasin , ἀποτελεσθεῖσαapotelestheisawhen it is full-grown , ἀποκύειapokyeigives birth to θάνατονthanatondeath .
16Μὴ{Do} not πλανᾶσθεplanasthebe deceived , ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers . μουmoumy ἀγαπητοίagapētoibeloved
17πᾶσαpasaEvery δόσιςdosisgood ἀγαθὴagathēvvv καὶkaiand πᾶνpan- δώρημαdōrēmagift τέλειονteleionperfect ἄνωθένanōthenfrom above , ἐστίestiI have καταβαῖνονkatabainoncoming down ἀπὸapofrom τοῦtouthe ΠατρὸςPatrosFather τῶνtōn- φώτωνphōtōnof the heavenly lights , παρ’par’with whom οὐκoukno ἔνιenithere is παραλλαγὴparallagēchange ēor τροπῆςtropēsshifting ἀποσκίασμαaposkiasmashadow .
18βουληθεὶςboulētheisHe chose ἀπεκύησενapekyēsento give us birth ἡμᾶςhēmas. . . λόγῳlogōthrough [the] word ἀληθείαςalētheiasof truth , εἰςeisthat τὸto- εἶναιeinaiwould be ἡμᾶςhēmaswe ἀπαρχήνaparchēnfirstfruits τιναtinaa kind of τῶνtōn- αὐτοῦautouof His κτισμάτωνktismatōncreation .
19ὥστεhōsteso that ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , μουmouMy ἀγαπητοίagapētoibeloved ἔστωestōshould be πᾶςpasEveryone ἄνθρωποςanthrōpos. . . ταχὺςtachysquick εἰςeisto τὸto- ἀκοῦσαιakousailisten , βραδὺςbradysslow εἰςeisto τὸto- λαλῆσαιlalēsaispeak , βραδὺςbradys[and] slow εἰςeisto ὀργήνorgēnanger ,
20ὀργὴorgēanger γὰρgarfor ἀνδρὸςandrosman’s δικαιοσύνηνdikaiosynēn[the] righteousness ΘεοῦTheouthat God [desires] . οὐouvvv κατεργάζεταιkatergazetaidevelops
21διὸdioTherefore , ἀποθέμενοιapothemenoiget rid πᾶσανpasanof all ῥυπαρίανrhyparianmoral filth καὶkaiand περισσείανperisseianevery expression κακίαςkakiasof evil , ἐνenvvv πραΰτητιprautēti[and] humbly δέξασθεdexastheaccept τὸνtonthe ἔμφυτονemphytonplanted [in you] , λόγονlogonword τὸνtonthe δυνάμενονdynamenoncan σῶσαιsōsaisave τὰςtas- ψυχὰςpsychassouls . ὑμῶνhymōnyour
22ΓίνεσθεGinestheBe δὲde- ποιηταὶpoiētaidoers λόγουlogouof [the] word , καὶkaiand μὴnot μόνονmonononly . ἀκροαταὶakroataihearers παραλογιζόμενοιparalogizomenoi[Otherwise,] you are deceiving ἑαυτούςheautousyourselves .
23ὅτιhotiFor εἴei- τιςtisanyone ἀκροατὴςakroatēswho hears λόγουlogou[the] word ἐστίestiI have καὶkaibut οὐouvvv ποιητήςpoiētēsdoes not carry it out οὗτοςhoutos- ἔοικενeoikenis like ἀνδρὶandria man [who] κατανοοῦντιkatanoountilooks τὸto- πρόσωπονprosōponface τῆςtēs- γενέσεωςgeneseōsvvv αὐτοῦautouat his ἐνenin ἐσόπτρῳesoptrōa mirror ,
24κατενόησεkatenoeseafter observing γὰρgar[and] ἑαυτὸνheautonhimself καὶkai- ἀπελήλυθε,apeleluthegoes away καὶkai- εὐθέωςeutheōsimmediately ἐπελάθετοepelathetoforgets ὁποῖοςhopoiosvvv ἦνēnwhat he [looks] like .
25hothe [one who] δὲdeBut παρακύψαςparakypsaslooks intently εἰςeisinto νόμονnomonlaw τέλειονteleion[the] perfect τὸνton- τῆςtēs- ἐλευθερίαςeleutheriasof freedom , καὶkaiand παραμείναςparameinascontinues to do so — οὗτοςhoutos[he] οὐκouknot ἀκροατὴςakroatēshearer , ἐπιλησμονῆςepilēsmonēsa forgetful γενόμενοςgenomenosbeing ἀλλὰallabut ποιητὴςpoiētēsdoer — ἔργουergouan effective οὗτοςhoutos[he] μακάριοςmakariosblessed ἐνenin τῇwhat ποιήσειpoiēseidoes . αὐτοῦautouhe ἔσταιestaiwill be
26ΕἴEiIf τιςtisanyone δοκεῖdokeiconsiders himself θρησκὸςthrēskosreligious εἶναιeinai. . . ἐνenin ὑμῖνhyminyou ? μὴvvv χαλιναγωγῶνchalinagōgōn[and yet] does not bridle γλῶσσανglōssantongue , αὐτοῦ*autouhis Ἀλλ’All’But ἀπατῶνapatōnhe deceives καρδίανkardianheart αὐτοῦ*autouhis τούτουtoutou[and his] μάταιοςmataios[is] worthless . - θρησκείαthrēskeiareligion
27θρησκείαthrēskeiareligion καθαρὰkatharaPure καὶkaiand ἀμίαντοςamiantosundefiled παρὰparabefore τῷ[our] ΘεῷTheōGod καὶkaiand ΠατρὶPatriFather αὕτηhautēthis : ἐστίνestinis ἐπισκέπτεσθαιepiskeptesthaito care for ὀρφανοὺςorphanousorphans καὶkaiand χήραςchēraswidows ἐνenin τῇ- θλίψειthlipseidistress , αὐτῶνautōntheir ἄσπιλονaspilonfrom being polluted ἑαυτὸνheautononeself τηρεῖνtērein[and] to keep ἀπὸapoby τοῦtouthe κόσμουkosmouworld .
