2καὶkaiand ἠρώτησανērōtēsanasked αὐτὸνautonHim οἱhoi- μαθηταὶmathētaidisciples αὐτοῦautouHis λέγοντεςlegontes. . . , ῬαββίRhabbi“ Rabbi , τίςtiswho ἥμαρτενhēmartensinned , οὗτοςhoutosthis [man] ἢēor οἱhoi- γονεῖςgoneisparents , αὐτοῦautouhis ἵναhinathat τυφλὸςtyphlosblind ? ” γεννηθῇgennēthēhe was born
3ἈπεκρίθηApekrithēanswered , ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ΟὔτεOute“ Neither οὗτοςhoutosthis [man] ἥμαρτενhēmartensinned , οὔτεoutenor οἱhoi- γονεῖςgoneisparents αὐτοῦautouhis ἀλλ’all’but ἵναhina[this happened] so that φανερωθῇphanerōthēwould be displayed τὰtathe ἔργαergaworks τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God ἐνenin αὐτῷautōhim .
4ἐμέememe ? δεῖdeimust ἐργάζεσθαιergazesthaido τὰtathe ἔργαergaworks τοῦtouof Him who πέμψαντόςpempsantossent μεmeMe . ἕωςheōsWhile ἡμέραhēmeradaytime , ἐστίνestinit is ἔρχεταιerchetaiis coming , νὺξnyxNight ὅτεhotewhen οὐδεὶςoudeisno one δύναταιdynataican ἐργάζεσθαιergazesthaiwork .
5ὅτανhotanWhile ἐνenin τῷtōthe κόσμῳkosmōworld , ὦōI am φῶςphōs[the] light εἰμιeimiI am τοῦtouof the κόσμουkosmouworld . ”
6ΤαῦταTauta[this] , εἰπὼνeipōnWhen [Jesus] had said ἔπτυσενeptysenHe spit χαμαὶchamaion [the] ground , καὶkai- ἐποίησεepoiesehas done πηλὸνpēlon[some] mud ἐκek- τοῦtou- πτύσματοςptysmatos- , καὶkaiand ἐπέχρισεepekhriseapplied τὸνton- πηλὸνpēlon[it] ἐπὶepito τοὺςtous- ὀφθαλμούςophthalmouseyes . τοῦtou- τυφλοῦtyphloublind .
7καὶkai. . . εἶπενeipen[and] said , αὐτῷautō. . . , ὝπαγεHypagego νίψαιnipsaiwash . εἰςeisto τὴνtēnthe κολυμβήθρανkolymbēthranPool τοῦtou- ΣιλωάμSilōamof Siloam ” ὃho(which ἑρμηνεύεταιhermēneuetaimeans ἈπεσταλμένοςApestalmenos“Sent” ). ἀπῆλθενapēlthen[the man] went οὖνounSo καὶkaiand ἐνίψατοenipsatowashed , καὶkaiand ἔλθῃelthēshould come βλέπωνblepōnseeing .
8ΟἱHoi[his] οὖνounAt this , γείτονεςgeitonesneighbors καὶkaiand οἱhoithose who θεωροῦντεςtheōrounteshad formerly seen αὐτὸνautonhim τὸto. . . πρότερονproteron. . . ὅτιhotivvv τυφλὸςtyphlosblind ? ” ἐνenin ἔλεγονelegonbegan to ask , ΟὐχOuch. . . οὗτόςhoutosthis ἐστινestin“ Isn’t ὁhothe [man who] καθήμενοςkathēmenosused to sit καὶkaiand προσαιτῶνprosaitōnbeg ? ”
9ἌλλοιAlloiSome ἔλεγονelegonclaimed ὅτιhotithat ΟὗτόςHoutoshe ἐστινestinwas , ἄλλοιalloibut others δὲdeNow ὅτιhotito ὅμοιοςhomoioslike αὐτῷautōhim . ” ἐστινestinhe just looks ἘκεῖνοςEkeinos[But the man] ἔλεγενelegenkept saying ὅτιhoti- , ἘγώEgō“ I εἰμιeimiam [the one] . ”
10ἜλεγονElegonthey asked οὖνoun- αὐτῷautō- . ΠῶςPōs“ How ἀνεῴχθησανaneōchthēsanbroke open , σουsou{were} your οἱhoi- ὀφθαλμοίophthalmoieyes
11ἈπεκρίθηApekrithēanswered , ἐκεῖνοςekeinosHe καὶkaiand εἶπένeipenHe told ἄνθρωποςanthrōposman λεγόμενοςlegomenosthey call ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus πηλὸνpēlon[some] mud ἐποίησεepoiesehas done καὶkaiand ἐπέχρισέepekhriseapplied μουmoumy τοὺςtous- ὀφθαλμοὺςophthalmouseyes , καὶkaiand εἰπὲeipesay μοιmoime ὝπαγεHypagego εἰςeisto τὴνtēnthe κολυμβήθρανkolymbēthranPool τοῦtou- ΣιλωάμSilōamof Siloam ” καὶkaiand νίψαιnipsaiwash ἀπελθὼνapelthōnI went δὲdeNow καὶkaiand νιψάμενοςnipsamenoswashed ἀνέβλεψαaneblepsa[and] received my sight . ”
12εἰπὼνeipōnWhen [Jesus] had said οὖνounSo αὐτῷautōhim , ΠοῦPou“ Where ἐστινestinis ἐκεῖνοςekeinosHe ? ” ΛέγειLegeihe answered . ΟὐκOuk“ vvv οἶδαoidaI do not know , ”
13ἌγουσινAgousinThey brought αὐτὸνauton[the man] πρὸςprosto τοὺςtousthe ΦαρισαίουςPharisaiousPharisees τόνtonwho ποτεpotehad been τυφλόνtyphlonblind .
14ἐνenon δὲdeNow σάββατονsabbatona Sabbath . ὅτεhotewhen τὸνton- πηλὸνpēlon[it] ἐποίησενepoiēsenmade ὦōI am ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus καὶkaiand ἀνέῳξενaneōxenopened αὐτοῦautouhis τοὺςtous- ὀφθαλμούςophthalmouseyes
15πάλινpalin- οὖνounSo ἠρώτωνērōtōnasked αὐτὸνautonhim καὶkaialso οἱhoithe ΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioiPharisees πῶςpōshow ἀνέβλεψενaneblepsenhe had received his sight . ὉHo- δὲde- εἶπενeipen[The man] answered αὐτοῖςautois. . . , ΠηλὸνPēlonmud ἐπέθηκέepethekeHe placed μουmoumy ἐπὶepion τοὺςtous- ὀφθαλμούςophthalmouseyes , καὶkaiand ἐνιψάμηνenipsamēnI washed , καὶkaiand [now] βλέπωblepōI can see . ”
16ἜλεγονElegonsaid , οὖνounBecause of this , ἐκekof τῶνtōnthe ΦαρισαίωνPharisaiōnPharisees τινέςtinessome οὗτοςhoutos“ This ὁho- ἄνθρωποςanthrōposman ΟὐκOuknot ἔστιestiis παρὰparafrom τοῦtouvvv ΘεοῦTheouGod , ὅτιhotifor τὸtothe σάββατονsabbatonSabbath . ” οὐouvvv τηρεῖtēreiHe does not keep ἌλλοιAlloiothers ἔλεγονelegonsaid , ΠῶςPōs“ How δύναταιdynataican ἄνθρωποςanthrōposman ἁμαρτωλὸςhamartōlosa sinful τοιαῦταtoiautasuch σημεῖαsēmeiasigns ? ” ποιεῖνpoieinperform ΚαὶKaiAnd σχίσμαschismadivision ἐνenamong ἐνenamong αὐτοῖςautoisthem .
17λέγουσιlegousisay τῷtōthe τυφλῷtyphlō[man who had been] blind , πάλινpalinonce again σὺsy{do} you ΤίTi“ What λέγειςlegeissay περὶperiabout αὐτοῦautouHim , ὅτιhotisince ἤνοιξέenoixeopened σουsou[it was] your τοὺςtous- ὀφθαλμούςophthalmouseyes ὉHo- δὲde- εἶπενeipen[the man] replied . ὅτιhoti- ΠροφήτηςProphētēsa prophet , ” ἐστίνestin“ He is
18ΟὐκOuk{did} not ἐπίστευονepisteuondid {not} believe οὖνounstill οἱhoiThe ἸουδαῖοιIoudaioiJews περὶperi- αὐτοῦautou- ὅτιhotithat τυφλὸςtyphlosblind ἦνēn[the man] had been καὶkaiand ἀνέβλεψενaneblepsenhad received his sight ἕωςheōsuntil ὅτουhotou. . . ἐφώνησανephōnēsanthey summoned τοὺςtous- γονεῖςgoneisparents αὐτοῦautouvvv τοῦtouvvv ἀναβλέψαντοςanablepsantos[his]
19καὶkaiand ἠρώτησανērōtēsanasked αὐτοὺςautous. . . λέγοντεςlegontes. . . , ΟὗτόςHoutosthis ἐστινestin“ Is ὁho- υἱὸςhuiosson , ὑμῶνhymōnyour ὃνhon[the one] ὑμεῖςhymeisyou λέγετεlegetesay ὅτιhoti- τυφλὸςtyphlosblind ? ἐγεννήθηegennēthēwas born πῶςpōshow [is it that] οὖνounSo ἄρτιarti. . . ? ” βλέπειblepeihe can now see
20ἈπεκρίθησανApekrithēsananswered δὲdeBut αὐτοῖςautoisthem . οἱhoiThe γονεῖςgoneisparents αὐτοῦautouvvv καὶkaiand Εἶπον*Eiponthey asked οἴδαμενoidamenknow ὅτιhotithat οὗτοςhoutosthis ἐστινestinis ὁho- υἱὸςhuiosson , ἡμῶνhēmōnour καὶkaiand ὅτιhoti[we know] τυφλὸςtyphlosblind . ἐγεννήθηegennēthēhe was born
21πῶςpōshow δὲdeBut νῦνnyn. . . βλέπειblepeihe can now see οὐκouk- οἴδαμενoidamen- ἢēor τίςtiswho ἤνοιξενēnoixenopened αὐτοῦautouhis τοὺςtous- ὀφθαλμοὺςophthalmouseyes , ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe οὐκouk{do} not οἴδαμενoidamenknow . αὐτὸςautosHe ἡλικίανhēlikianold enough ἔχειecheiis αὐτὸνautonhim . ἐρωτήσατεerōtēsateAsk αὐτὸςautosHe περὶperifor ἑαυτοῦheautouhimself . ” λαλήσειlalēseito speak
22ΤαῦταTautathis Εἶπον*Eiponthey asked οἱhoi- γονεῖςgoneisparents αὐτοῦautouhis ὅτιhoti- , ἐφοβοῦντοephobountothey were afraid τοὺςtousof the ἸουδαίουςIoudaiousJews . ἤδηēdēvvv γὰρgarFor συνετέθειντοsynetetheintohad already determined οἱhoithe ἸουδαῖοιIoudaioiJews ἵναhinathat ἐάνean- τιςtisanyone who ὁμολογήσῃhomologēsēconfessed ΧριστόνChriston[as the] Christ ἀποσυνάγωγοςaposynagōgosput out of the synagogue . γένηταιgenētaiwould be
23διὰdiaThat was why τοῦτοtouto. . . οἱhoi- γονεῖςgoneisparents αὐτοῦautouhis Εἶπον*Eiponthey asked ὅτιhoti- ἩλικίανHēlikianold enough . ἔχειechei“ He is αὐτὸνautonhim . ” ἐρωτήσατεerōtēsateAsk
24ἘφώνησανEphōnēsanthey called οὖνounSo ἐκekfor δευτέρουdeuteroua second time τὸνtonthe ἄνθρωπονanthrōponman ὃςhoswho ἦνēnhad been τυφλὸςtyphlosblind καὶkaiand Εἶπον*Eiponthey asked αὐτῷautō- . ΔὸςDos“ Give δόξανdoxanglory τῷtō- ΘεῷTheōto God ! ἡμεῖςhēmeisWe οἴδαμενoidamenknow ὅτιhotithat ὁho- ἄνθρωποςanthrōposman οὗτοςhoutosthis ἁμαρτωλόςhamartōlosa sinner . ” ἐστινestinis
25ἈπεκρίθηApekrithēanswered , οὖνoun- ἐκεῖνοςekeinosHe καὶkaiand εἶπενeipen. . . εἶeiare ἁμαρτωλόςhamartōlosa sinner ἐστινestinHe is οὐκoukvvv οἶδαoidaI do not know . ἓνhen[There is] one [thing] οἶδαoidaI do know : ὅτιhoti- τυφλὸςtyphlosblind , ὢνōnI was ἄρτιarti[but] now βλέπωblepōI see ! ”
26Εἶπον*Eiponthey asked δὲde- αὐτῷautō- . πάλινpalinagain ? τίtiWhy ἐποίησέepoiesehas done σοιsoito you ? ” πῶςpōs“ How ἤνοιξέenoixeopened σουsouyour τοὺςtous- ὀφθαλμούςophthalmouseyes ? ”
27ἈπεκρίθηApekrithēHe replied αὐτοῖςautois- , ΕἶπονEipon“ I already told ὑμῖνhyminyou , ἤδηēdē. . . καὶkaiand οὐκoukvvv ἠκούσατεēkousateyou did not listen . τίtiWhy πάλινpalinagain ? θέλετεtheletedo you want ἀκούεινakoueinto hear [it] μὴmēvvv καὶkaialso ὑμεῖςhymeis{Do} you θέλετεtheletewant αὐτοῦautouHis μαθηταὶmathētaidisciples ? ” γενέσθαιgenesthaito become
28ἐλοιδόρησανeloidorēsanthey heaped insults on αὐτὸνautonhim καὶkaiand εἶπον*eiponsaid , ΣὺSy“ You εἶeiare μαθητὴςmathētēsdisciple ; ἐκείνουekeinouHis ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe δὲde- τοῦtou- ΜωϋσέωςMōuseōsof Moses . ἐσμὲνesmenare μαθηταίmathētaidisciples
29ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe οἴδαμενoidamenknow ὅτιhotithat ΜωϋσεῖMōuseito Moses , λελάληκενlelalēkenspoke ὁho- ΘεόςTheosGod τοῦτονtoutonthis [man] δὲdebut οὐκoukvvv οἴδαμενoidamenwe do not know πόθενpothenwhere ἐστίνestinis {from} . ”
30ἈπεκρίθηApekrithēsaid ὁhothe ἄνθρωποςanthrōposman καὶkai. . . εἶπενeipen. . . αὐτοῖςautois. . . . ἘνEn“ - γὰρgarindeed ! ” τούτῳtoutō“ That θαυμαστόνthaumastonremarkable ἐστινestinis ὅτιhoti- ὑμεῖςhymeisYou οὐκouk{do} not οἴδατεoidateknow πόθενpothenwhere ἐστί,estiis καὶkaiand yet ἀνέῳξέaneoxeopened μουmoumy τοὺςtous- ὀφθαλμούςophthalmouseyes .
31οἴδαμενoidamenWe know δὲdebut ὅτιhotithat ἁμαρτωλῶνhamartōlōnsinners , «ὁho- Θεὸς»TheosGod οὐκoukvvv ἀκούειakoueidoes not listen to ἀλλ’all’but ἐάνean- τιςtisone who θεοσεβὴςtheosebēsworships [Him] ᾖēvvv καὶkaiand τὸto- θέλημαthelēmawill . αὐτοῦautouHis ποιῇpoiēdoes τούτουtoutouthe ἀκούειakoueiHe does listen to
32ἐκekvvv τοῦtouvvv αἰῶνοςaiōnosbefore οὐκoukNever ἠκούσθηēkousthēheard of ὅτιhoti- ἤνοιξέenoixeopened τιςtis{has} anyone ὀφθαλμοὺςophthalmous[the] eyes τυφλοῦtyphloublind . γεγεννημένουgegennēmenouof a man born
33εἰeiIf μὴmēnot ἦνēnwere οὗτοςhoutosthis [man] παρὰparafrom ΘεοῦTheouGod , οὐκouk- ἠδύνατοēdynatoHe could ποιεῖνpoieindo οὐδένoudenno such thing . ”
34ἈπεκρίθησανApekrithēsanThey replied καὶkai. . . εἶπον*eiponsaid , αὐτῷautō- . ἓνhen[There is] one [thing] ἁμαρτίαιςhamartiaissin , σὺsyyou ἐγεννήθηςegennēthēswere born ὅλοςholosutter καὶkaiand σὺsyyou διδάσκειςdidaskeisare instructing ἡμᾶςhēmasus ? ” καὶkaiAnd ἐξέβαλονexebalonthey threw αὐτὸνautonhim ἔξωexōout .
35ἬκουσενĒkousenheard ἸησοῦςIēsous[When] Jesus ὅτιhotithat ἐξέβαλονexebalonthey had thrown αὐτὸνautonhim ἔξωexōout , καὶkai- εὑρὼνheurōnHe found αὐτὸνauton[the man] εἶπενeipen[and] said , αὐτῷautō. . . , σὺsy“ You πιστεύειςpisteueisbelieve εἰςeisin τὸνtonthe ΥἱὸνHuionSon τοῦtouof ΘεοῦTheouGod ,
36ἈπεκρίθηApekrithēreplied ἐκεῖνοςekeinoshe καὶkai. . . εἰπὲeipesay καὶkai. . . τίςtis“ Who ἐστι,estiis ΚύριεKyrieSir ? ” ἵναhina“ [Tell me] so that πιστεύσωpisteusōI may believe εἰςeisin αὐτόνautonHim . ”
37εἰπὲeipesay δὲde- αὐτῷautō[Jesus] . ὁho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ΚαὶKaiThen ἑώρακαςheōrakas“ You have already seen αὐτὸνautonHim , ” ΚαὶKaivvv ὁho- λαλῶνlalōnspeaking μετὰmetawith σοῦsouyou . ” ἐκεῖνόςekeinos“ He ἐστινestinis
38ὁhothe [One] δὲde- ἔφηephēhe said . ΠιστεύωPisteuōI believe , ” ΚύριεKyrie“ Lord , καὶkaiAnd προσεκύνησενprosekynēsenhe worshiped αὐτῷautō[Jesus] .
39ΚαὶKaiThen εἶπενeipendeclared , ὁho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ΕἰςEis“ For κρίμαkrimajudgment ἐγὼegōI εἰςeisinto τὸνton- κόσμονkosmonworld , τοῦτονtoutonthis ἦλθονēlthonhave come ἵναhinaso that οἱhoivvv μὴmēvvv βλέποντεςblepontesthe blind βλέπωσιbleposithey may not see ; καὶkaiand οἱhoithose who βλέποντεςblepontessee τυφλοὶtyphloiblind .” γένωνταιgenōntaimay become
40καὶkaiand ἤκουσανĒkousanheard ἐκek[Some] of τῶνtōnthe ΦαρισαίωνPharisaiōnPharisees ταῦταtautathis , οἱhoiwho ὄντεςonteswere μετ’met’with αὐτοῦautouHim καὶkaiand εἶπον*eiponthey asked αὐτῷautōHim , ΜὴMē. . . καὶkaitoo ? ” ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe τυφλοίtyphloiblind ἐσμενesmen“ Are
41ΕἶπενEipenreplied αὐτοῖςautois- , ὁho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ΕἰEi“ If τυφλοὶtyphloiblind , ” ἦτεēteyou were οὐκoukvvv ἂνanvvv εἴχετεeichete“ you would not be ἁμαρτίανhamartianguilty of sin . νῦνnynsince δὲdeBut λέγετεlegeteyou claim ὅτιhoti- ΒλέπομενBlepomen[you] can see , ἡhē- οὖνoun- ἁμαρτίαhamartiaguilt ὑμῶνhymōnyour μένειmeneiremains . ”
