1ΤοιγαροῦνToigarounTherefore , καὶkai- ἡμεῖςhēmeis[since] we τοσοῦτονtosoutonsuch a great ἔχοντεςechontesare περικείμενονperikeimenonsurrounded by ἡμῖνhēmin. . . νέφοςnephoscloud μαρτύρωνmartyrōnof witnesses , ὄγκονonkonencumbrance ἀποθέμενοιapothemenoilet us throw off πάνταpantaevery καὶkaiand τὴνtēnthe εὐπερίστατονeuperistatonso easily entangles , ἁμαρτίανhamartiansin [that] δι’di’with ὑπομονῆςhypomonēsendurance τρέχωμενtrechōmen[and] let us run τὸνtonthe προκείμενονprokeimenonset out for ἡμῖνhēminus . ἀγῶναagōnarace
2ἀφορῶντεςaphorōntesLet us fix our eyes εἰςeison τὸνtonthe τῆςtēsof [our] πίστεωςpisteōsfaith , ἀρχηγὸνarchēgonauthor καὶkaiand τελειωτὴνteleiōtēnperfecter ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus , ὃςhoswho ἀντὶantifor τῆςtēsthe προκειμένηςprokeimenēsset before αὐτῷautōHim χαρᾶςcharasjoy ὑπέμεινεupemeineremained behind σταυρὸνstauron[the] cross , αἰσχύνηςaischynēs[its] shame , καταφρονήσαςkataphronēsasscorning ἐνenat δεξιᾷdexia[the] right hand τεteand τοῦtouof the θρόνουthronouthrone τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God . κεκάθικενkekathikensat down
3ἀναλογίσασθεanalogisastheConsider γὰρgar- τὸνtonHim who τοιαύτηνtoiautēnsuch ὑπομεμενηκόταhypomemenēkotaendured ὑπὸhypofrom τῶνtōn- ἁμαρτωλῶνhamartōlōnsinners , εἰςeis. . . αὐτῶνautōn- ἀντιλογίανantilogianhostility ἵναhinaso that μὴvvv κάμητεkamēteyou will not grow weary ταῖςtais. . . ψυχαῖςpsychais. . . . ὑμῶνhymōn. . . ἐκλυόμενοιeklyomenoi[and] lose heart
4ΟὔπωOupōvvv μέχριςmechristo the point of αἵματοςhaimatosshedding your blood . ἀντικατέστητεantikatestēteyou have not yet resisted πρὸςprosagainst τὴνtēn- ἁμαρτίανhamartiansin , ἀνταγωνιζόμενοιantagōnizomenoiIn your struggle
5καὶkaiAnd ἐκλέλησθεeklelēstheyou have forgotten τῆςtēsthe παρακλήσεωςparaklēseōsexhortation ἥτιςhētisthat ὑμῖνhyminyou ὡςhōsas υἱοῖςhuioissons : διαλέγεταιdialegetaiaddresses ΥἱέHuieson , μουmou“ My μὴ{do} not ὀλιγώρειoligōreitake lightly παιδείαςpaideias[the] discipline ΚυρίουKyriouof [the] Lord , μηδὲmēdeand [do not] ἐκλύουeklyoulose heart ὑπ’hyp’- αὐτοῦautou[when] He ἐλεγχόμενοςelenchomenosrebukes you .
6ὃνhonthe one γὰρgarFor ἀγαπᾷagapaHe loves , ΚύριοςKyrios[the] Lord παιδεύειpaideueidisciplines μαστιγοῖmastigoiHe chastises δὲdeand πάνταpantaevery υἱὸνhuionson ὃνhon. . . παραδέχεταιparadechetaiHe receives .”
7εἰeiIf παιδείανpaideiandiscipline ; ὑπομένετεhypomeneteEndure suffering ὡςhōsas υἱοῖςhuioissons . ὑμῖνhyminyou προσφέρεταιprospheretaiis treating ho- ΘεόςTheosGod τίςtiswhat γὰρgarFor ἐστὶνestinis υἱὸςhuiosson ὃνhon- οὐouvvv παιδεύειpaideueiis not disciplined πατήρpatēr[by his] father ?
8εἰeiIf δὲde- χωρίςchōris. . . ἐστεesteyou do not experience παιδείαςpaideiasdiscipline ἧςhēslike μέτοχοιmetochoielse , γεγόνασιgegonasivvv πάντεςpanteseveryone ἄραarathen νόθοιnothoiillegitimate children ἐστεesteyou are καὶkaiand οὐχouchnot true υἱοίhuioisons .
9εἶταeitaFurthermore τοὺςtous- μὲνmen. . . , τῆςtēsvvv σαρκὸςsarkosearthly ἡμῶνhēmōnvvv πατέραςpaterasfathers εἴχομενeichomenwe have all had παιδευτὰςpaideutaswho disciplined [us] , καὶkaiand ἐνετρεπόμεθαenetrepomethawe respected [them] . οὐou{Should we} not πολλῷpollōmuch , μᾶλλονmallon. . . ὑποταγησόμεθαhypotagēsomethasubmit τῷto the ΠατρὶPatriFather τῶνtōnof [our] πνευμάτωνpneumatōnspirits καὶkaiand ζήσομενzēsomenlive ?
10ΟἱHoivvv μὲνmenvvv γὰρgar- πρὸςprosfor ὀλίγαςoligasa short ἡμέραςhēmerastime κατὰkataas τὸto- δοκοῦνdokounthought best , αὐτοῖςautoisthey ἐπαίδευονepaideuon[Our fathers] disciplined [us] ho[God disciplines us] δὲdebut ἐπὶepifor τὸto[our] συμφέρονsympherongood , εἰςeisso that τὸto- μεταλαβεῖνmetalabeinwe may share τῆςtēs- ἁγιότητοςhagiotētosholiness . αὐτοῦautouin His
11πᾶσαpasavvv δὲ*de- παιδείαpaideiadiscipline πρὸςprosat μὲνmen- τὸtothe παρὸνparontime , οὐouNo δοκεῖdokeiseems χαρᾶςcharasenjoyable εἶναιeinaivvv ἀλλὰallabut λύπηςlypēspainful . ὕστερονhysteronLater on , δὲdehowever , καρπὸνkarpona harvest εἰρηνικὸνeirēnikon[and] peace τοῖςtoisto those who δι’di’by αὐτῆςautēsit . γεγυμνασμένοιςgegymnasmenoishave been trained ἀποδίδωσιapodidosiit yields δικαιοσύνηςdikaiosynēsof righteousness
12ΔιὸDioTherefore τὰςtas[your] παρειμέναςpareimenaslimp χεῖραςcheirashands καὶkaiand τὰta- παραλελυμέναparalelymenaweak γόναταgonataknees . ἀνορθώσατεanorthōsatestrengthen
13καὶkaiand τροχιὰςtrochiaspaths ὀρθὰςorthasstraight ποιήσατεpoiēsateProvide τοῖςtoisfor ποσὶνposinfeet , ὑμῶνhymōnyour ἵναhinaso that μὴ{may} not τὸtothe χωλὸνchōlonlame ἐκτραπῇektrapēbe disabled , ἰαθῇiathēhealed . δὲdebut μᾶλλονmallonrather
14ΕἰρήνηνEirēnēnpeace διώκετεdiōketePursue μετὰmetawith πάντωνpantōneveryone , καὶkaias well as τὸνton- ἁγιασμόνhagiasmonholiness , οὗhouwhich χωρὶςchōriswithout οὐδεὶςoudeisno one ὄψεταιopsetaiwill see τὸνtonthe ΚύριονKyrionLord .
15ἐπισκοποῦντεςepiskopountesSee to it that μήno τιςtisone ὑστερῶνhysterōnfalls short ἀπὸapoof τῆςtēsthe χάριτοςcharitosgrace τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , μή[and] that no τιςtis. . . ῥίζαrhizaroot πικρίαςpikriasof bitterness ἄνωanōup φύουσαphyousasprings ἐνοχλῇenochlēto cause trouble καὶkaiand διὰdiathrough ταύτηςtautēsof this μιανθῶσιmianthosidefile πολλοίpolloimany .
16μή[See to it] that τιςtis[no one is] πόρνοςpornossexually immoral , ēor βέβηλοςbebēlosis godless ὡςhōslike ἨσαῦĒsauEsau , ὃςhoswho ἀντὶantifor βρώσεωςbrōseōsmeal μιᾶςmiasa single ἀπέδοτοapedotosold τὰta- πρωτοτόκιαprōtotokiabirthright . αὐτοῦautouin His
17ἴστεisteyou know γὰρgarFor ὅτιhotithat καὶkai- μετέπειταmetepeitaafterward , θέλωνthelōnwhen he wanted κληρονομῆσαιklēronomēsaito inherit τὴνtēnthe εὐλογίανeulogianblessing , ἀπεδοκιμάσθηapedokimasthēhe was rejected . μετανοίαςmetanoiasfor repentance , γὰρgarvvv τόπονtoponground οὐχouchno εὕρῃheurēfinds [them] καίπερkaiperthough μετὰmetawith δακρύωνdakryōntears . ἐκζητήσαςekzētēsashe sought αὐτήνautēn[the blessing]
18ΟὐOuvvv γὰρgarFor προσεληλύθατεproselēlythateyou have not come to ψηλαφωμένῳpsēlaphōmenō[ a mountain that ] can be touched ὄρειoreiMount καὶkai- κεκαυμένῳkekaumenōis burning πυρὶpyriwith fire ; καὶkai- γνόφῳgnophōto darkness , καὶkai- σκότῳskotogloom καὶkai- θυέλλῃthyellēstorm ;
19καὶkai- σάλπιγγοςsalpingosto a trumpet ἤχῳēchōblast καὶkai[or] φωνῇphōnēto a voice ῥημάτωνrhēmatōn. . . ἧςhēsthat [made] οἱhoi[its] ἀκούσαντεςakousanteshearers παρῃτήσαντοparētēsantobeg that μὴno further προστεθῆναιprostethēnaibe spoken αὐτοῖςautois- . λόγονlogonword
20οὐκoukvvv ἔφερονepheronthey could not bear γὰρgarFor τὸtowhat διαστελλόμενονdiastellomenonwas commanded : ΚἂνKan“ If even θηρίονthērionan animal θίγῃthigētouches τοῦtouthe ὄρουςorousmountain , λιθοβοληθήσεταιlithobolēthēsetaiit must be stoned .”
21καίkai[that] even οὕτωhoutōso φοβερὸνphoberonterrifying ἦνēnwas τὸtoThe φανταζόμενονphantazomenonsight ΜωϋσῆςMōusēsMoses εἶπενeipensaid , ἜκφοβόςEkphoboswith fear .” εἰμιeimi“ I am καὶkai- ἔντρομοςentromostrembling
22ἈλλὰAllaInstead , προσεληλύθατεproselēlythateyou have come to ΣιὼνSiōnZion , ὄρειoreiMount καὶkai- πόλειpolei[to the] city ΘεοῦTheouGod , ζῶντοςzōntosof [the] living ἸερουσαλὴμIerousalēmJerusalem . ἐπουρανίῳepouraniō[the] heavenly καὶkai[You have come] μυριάσινmyriasinto myriads ἀγγέλωνangelōnof angels
23πανηγύρειpanēgyreiin joyful assembly , καὶkai- ἐκκλησίᾳekklēsia[to the] congregation πρωτοτόκωνprōtotokōnof [the] firstborn , ἐνenin οὐρανοῖςouranoisheaven . ἀπογεγραμμένωνapogegrammenōnenrolled καὶkai[You have come] ΚριτῇKritē[the] Judge ΘεῷTheōto God πάντωνpantōnof all , καὶkai- πνεύμασιpneumasito [the] spirits δικαίωνdikaiōnof [the] righteous τετελειωμένωνteteleiōmenōnmade perfect ,
24καὶkai- διαθήκηςdiathēkēscovenant , νέαςneasof a new μεσίτῃmesitē[the] mediator ἸησοῦIēsouto Jesus καὶkai- αἵματιhaimatiblood ῥαντισμοῦrhantismouto [the] sprinkled κρεῖττονkreittona better word λαλοῦντιlalountithat speaks παρὰparathan τὸνton[the blood] of ἍβελHabelAbel .
25ΒλέπετεBlepeteSee to it that μὴvvv παραιτήσησθεparaitēsēstheyou do not refuse τὸνtonHim who λαλοῦνταlalountaspeaks . εἰeiif γὰρgarFor ἐκεῖνοιekeinoi[the people] οὐκouk{did} not ἔφυγονephygonthey ran off τὸνtonHim who ἐπὶepion τῆςtēsthe γῆςgēsearth , παραιτησάμενοιparaitēsamenoiwhen they refused τὸνtonHim who χρηματίζονταchrēmatizontawarned [them] πολλῷpollōmuch , μᾶλλονmallonless ἡμεῖςhēmeis[will] we [escape] οἱhoi- τὸνtonHim who [warns us] ἀπ’ap’from οὐρανῶνouranōnheaven ? ἀποστρεφόμενοιapostrephomenoiif we reject
26οὗhou[His] - φωνὴphōnēvoice τὴνtēnthe γῆνgēnearth , ἐσάλευσεesaleuseshook τότεtoteAt that time νῦνnynnow δὲdebut ἐπήγγελταιepēngeltaiHe has promised λέγωνlegōn- , ἜτιEtivvv ἅπαξhapax“ Once more ἐγὼegōI σείωseiowill shake οὐounot μόνονmonononly τὴνtēnthe γῆνgēnearth , ἀλλὰallabut καὶkaias well .” τὸνton- οὐρανόνouranonheaven
27τὸtoThe [words] δὲde- ἜτιEtivvv ἅπαξhapax“ Once more ” δηλοῖdēloisignify τῶνtōnof what σαλευομένωνsaleuomenōncan be shaken — τὴνtēnthe μετάθεσινmetathesinremoval ὡςhōsthat is , πεποιημένωνpepoiēmenōncreated things — ἵναhinaso that μείνῃmeinēmay remain . τὰtathe μὴvvv σαλευόμεναsaleuomenaunshakable
28ΔιὸDioTherefore , βασιλείανbasileiankingdom , ἀσάλευτονasaleutonan unshakable παραλαμβάνοντεςparalambanontes[since] we are receiving ἔχωμενechōmenlet us be filled with χάρινcharingratitude , δι’di’[and so] ἧςhēs. . . λατρεύωμενlatreuōmenworship εὐαρέστωςeuarestōsacceptably τῷ- ΘεῷTheōGod μετὰmetawith αἰδοῦςaidousmodesty , καὶkaiand εὐλαβείαςeulabeiasreverence
29καὶkaiand γὰρgarFor ho- ΘεὸςTheosGod ἡμῶνhēmōnour πῦρpyrfire . ” καταναλίσκονkatanaliskon[is a] consuming
