1ἈγρίππαςAgrippasAgrippa δὲde- πρὸςprosagainst τῶνtōnthe ΠαῦλονPaulonPaul , ἔφηephēsaid ἘπιτρέπεταίEpitrepetaihave permission σοιsoi“ You ὑπὲρhyperfor σεαυτοῦseautouyourself . ” λέγεινlegeinto speak ΤότεToteThen ὁho- ΠαῦλοςPaulosPaul ἐκτείναςekteinasstretched out τὴνtēn[his] χεῖραcheirahand ἀπελογεῖτοapelogeito[and] began his defense :
2ΠερὶPeriagainst πάντωνpantōnall ὧνhōnvvv ἐγκαλοῦμαιenkaloumaithe accusations ὑπὸhypoof ἸουδαίωνIoudaiōn[the] Jews , βασιλεῦbasileu“ King ἈγρίππαAgrippaAgrippa , ἥγημαιhēgēmaiI consider ἐμαυτὸνemautonmyself μακάριονmakarionfortunate ἐπὶepibefore σοῦsouyou μέλλωνmellōnto stand ἀπολογεῖσθαιapologeisthaito defend myself σήμερονsēmerontoday
3μάλισταmalistaespecially γνώστηνgnōstēnacquainted ὄνταontaare σεse[since] you πάντωνpantōnwith all τῶνtōnthe κατὰkatavvv ἸουδαίουςIoudaiousJewish ἐθῶνethōncustoms τεteand καὶkai- ζητημάτωνzētēmatōncontroversies . διὸdiotherefore , δέομαιdeomaiI beg [you] , σοῦsouyou μακροθύμωςmakrothymōspatiently . ἀκοῦσαίakousaito listen to μουmoume
4ΤὴνTēnvvv μὲνmen. . . οὖνounSurely βίωσίνbiōsinhow I have lived μουmouvvv ΤὴνTēnvvv ἐκekof νεότητοςneotētos[my] youth , ‹τὴν›tēn- ἀπ’ap’from ἀρχῆςarchēs[the] earliest days γενομένηνgenomenēn- ἐνenamong τῷtō. . . ἔθνειethneipeople μουmoumy own ἐνenamong ἹεροσολύμοιςHierosolymoisJerusalem . ἴσασιisasiknow πάντεςpantesall ἸουδαῖοιIoudaioiJews
5προγινώσκοντέςproginōskontesThey have known μεmeme ἄνωθενanōthenfor a long time ἐὰνeanif θέλωσιthelōsithey are willing , μαρτυρεῖνmartyrein[and] can testify , ὅτιhotithat κατὰkataadhering to τὴνtēnthe ἀκριβεστάτηνakribestatēnstrictest αἵρεσινhairesinsect τῆςtēs- ἡμετέραςhēmeterasof our θρησκείαςthrēskeiasreligion . ἔζησαezēsaI lived as ΦαρισαῖοςPharisaiosa Pharisee ,
6ΚαὶKaiAnd νῦνnynnow ἐπ’ep’because of ἐλπίδιelpidi[my] hope τῆςtēsin the πρὸςpros- τοὺςtous- πατέραςpaterasfathers , ἐπαγγελίαςepangeliaspromise [that] γενομένηςgenomenēsmade ὑπὸhypo- τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod ἕστηκαhestēkaI stand κρινόμενοςkrinomenoson trial
7εἰςeisto ἣνhēn- τὸto- δωδεκάφυλονdōdekaphylontwelve tribes ἡμῶνhēmōnour ἣνhēn- ἐκτενείᾳekteneia. . . νύκταnyktanight . καὶkaiand ἡμέρανhēmeranday λατρεῦονlatreuonas they earnestly serve [ God ] ἐλπίζειelpizeiare hoping καταντῆσαιkatantēsaito realize περὶperi[It is] because of ἧςhēs[this] ἐλπίδοςelpidoshope , ἐγκαλοῦμαιenkaloumai[that] I am accused βασιλεῦbasileuO king , ἈγρίππαAgrippaAgrippa , ὑπὸhypoof τῶνtōnthe ἸουδαίωνIoudaiōn[the] Jews ,
8τίtiWhy {would} ἄπιστονapistonincredible κρίνεταιkrinetaiconsider it παρ’par’- ὑμῖνhyminany of you εἰeithat ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod νεκροὺςnekrous[the] dead ? ἐγείρειegeireiraises
9ἘγὼEgōI μὲνmen. . . , οὖνounSo then ἔδοξαedoxawas convinced that ἐμαυτῷemautō[too] πρὸςpros- τὸtothe ὄνομαonomaname ἸησοῦIēsouof Jesus τοῦtou- ΝαζωραίουNazōraiouof Nazareth . δεῖνdeinI ought πολλὰpollaall [I could] ἐναντίαenantiato oppose πρᾶξαιpraxaito do
10ὃho[that] is what καὶkaiAnd ἐποίησαepoiēsaI did ἐνenin ἹεροσολύμοιςHierosolymoisJerusalem . καὶkaiAnd πολλούςpollousmany τῶνtōnof the ἁγίωνhagiōnsaints ἐγὼegōI ἐνenin φυλακαῖςphylakaisprison , κατέκλεισαkatekleisaput τὴνtēn- παρὰparafrom τῶνtōnthe ἀρχιερέωνarchiereōnchief priests ἐξουσίανexousianauthority λαβώνlabōnWith ἀναιρουμένωνanairoumenōnwere condemned to death , τεteand αὐτῶνautōn[when] they κατήνεγκαkatēnenkaI cast my vote against [them] ψῆφονpsēphon. . . .
11καὶkai- κατὰkatain πάσαςpasas- τὰςtasthe συναγωγὰςsynagōgassynagogues , πολλάκιςpollakisvvv τιμωρῶνtimōrōnI frequently had them punished αὐτοὺςautousvvv ἠνάγκαζονēnankazon[and] I tried to make [them] βλασφημεῖνblasphēmeinblaspheme . περισσῶςperissōs. . . τεte- ἐμμαινόμενοςemmainomenosIn my raging fury αὐτοῖςautoisagainst them , ἐδίωκονediōkonto persecute [them] . ἕωςheōs[went] καὶkai{I} even εἰςeisto τὰςtas- ἔξωexōforeign πόλειςpoleiscities
12ἘνEnIn οἷςhoisthis [pursuit] καὶkaiand πορευόμενοςporeuomenosI was on my way εἰςeisto τὴνtēn- ΔαμασκὸνDamaskonDamascus μετ’met’with ἐξουσίαςexousias[the] authority καὶkaiand ἐπιτροπῆςepitropēscommission τῆςtēsof παρὰparafrom τῶνtōnthe ἀρχιερέωνarchiereōnchief priests
13ἡμέραςhēmeras. . . , μέσηςmesēsAbout noon κατὰkata[as I was] on τὴνtēnthe ὁδὸνhodonroad , εἶδονeidonI saw βασιλεῦbasileuO king , οὐρανόθενouranothenfrom heaven ὑπὲρhyper. . . , τὴνtēn- λαμπρότηταlamprotētabrighter than τοῦtouthe ἡλίουhēliousun , περιλάμψανperilampsanshining around μεmeme φῶςphōsa light καὶkaiand τοὺςtousmy companions σὺνsyn. . . ἐμοὶemoi. . . . πορευομένουςporeuomenous. . .
14πάντωνpantōnall δὲde- καταπεσόντωνkatapesontōnfell ἡμῶνhēmōnWe εἰςeisto τὴνtēnthe γῆνgēnground , ἤκουσαēkousa[and] I heard φωνὴνphōnēna voice λαλοῦσανlalousansay πρόςprosto μεmeme καὶkaiand λέγουσανlegousansay τῇtēin ἙβραΐδιHebraidiHebrew διαλέκτῳdialektō. . . , ΣαοὺλSaoul‘ Saul , ΣαοὺλSaoul‘ Saul , τίtiwhy μεmeMe ? διώκειςdiōkeisdo you persecute σκληρόνsklēron[It is] hard σοιsoifor you πρὸςprosagainst κέντραkentra[the] goads . ’ λακτίζεινlaktizeinto kick
15ἘγὼEgōI δὲde- εἰπὼνeipōnHe said ΤίςTis‘ Who εἶeiare You , ΚύριεKyrieLord ? ’ ὉHothe δὲde- εἶπενeipenreplied . ἘγώEgō‘ I εἰμιeimiam ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus , ὃνhonwhom σὺsyyou διώκειςdiōkeisare persecuting , ’
16ἀλλὰalla‘ But ἀνάστηθιanastēthiget up καὶkaiand στῆθιstēthistand ἐπὶepion τοὺςtous- πόδαςpodasfeet . σουsouyour εἰςeisto τοῦτοtoutovvv γὰρgarFor ὤφθηνōphthēnI have appeared σοιsoito you προχειρίσασθαίprocheirisasthaiappoint σεseyou ὑπηρέτηνhypēretēnas a servant καὶkaiand μάρτυραmartyraas a witness ὧνhōnof what τεte- εἶδέςeidesyou have seen ὧνhōnof what τεte- ὀφθήσομαίophthēsomaiI will show σοιsoiyou .
17ἐξαιρούμενόςexairoumenosI will rescue σεseyou ἐκekfrom τοῦtou[your own] λαοῦlaoupeople καὶkaiand τῶνtōnthe ἐθνῶνethnōnGentiles . εἰςeisto οὓςhous[them] ἐγὼegōI σεseyou ἀποστέλλωapostellōam sending
18ἀνοῖξαιanoixaito open ὀφθαλμοὺςophthalmouseyes , αὐτῶνautōntheir τοῦtouso that ἐπιστρέψαιepistrepsaithey may turn ἀπὸapofrom σκότουςskotousdarkness εἰςeisto φῶςphōslight καὶkaiand τῆςtēsfrom the ἐξουσίαςexousiaspower τοῦtou- ΣατανᾶSatanaof Satan ἐπὶepito τὸνton- ΘεόνTheonGod , τοῦtou[that] λαβεῖνlabeinmay receive αὐτοὺςautousthey ἄφεσινaphesinforgiveness ἁμαρτιῶνhamartiōnof sins καὶkaiand κλῆρονklēron[an] inheritance ἐνenamong τοῖςtoisthose ἡγιασμένοιςhēgiasmenoissanctified πίστειpisteiby faith τῇtē- εἰςeisin ἐμέemeMe . ’
19ὍθενHothenSo then , βασιλεῦbasileuKing ἈγρίππαAgrippaAgrippa , οὐκouknot ἐγενόμηνegenomēnI was ἀπειθὴςapeithēsdisobedient τῇtēto the οὐρανίῳouraniōheavenly ὀπτασίᾳoptasiavision .
20ἀλλὰalla- τοῖςtoisto those ἐνenin ΔαμασκῷDamaskōDamascus πρῶτόνprōtonFirst καὶkaiand ἹεροσολύμοιςHierosolymoisJerusalem , εἰςeisin πᾶσάνpasanto everyone τεtethen τὴνtēnin the χώρανchōranregion τῆςtēs- ἸουδαίαςIoudaiasof Judea , καὶkaiand then τοῖςtoisto the ἔθνεσινethnesinGentiles , ἀπαγγέλλωapaggelloI declared that μετανοεῖνmetanoeinthey should repent καὶkaiand ἐπιστρέφεινepistrepheinturn ἐπὶepito τὸνton- ΘεόνTheonGod , ἄξιαaxiaworthy τῆςtēs[of their] μετανοίαςmetanoiasrepentance . ἔργαergadeeds πράσσονταςprassontasperforming
21ἕνεκαhenekaFor this reason τούτωνtoutōn. . . μεmeme οἱhoithe ἸουδαῖοιIoudaioithe Jews συλλαβόμενοιsyllabomenoiseized ἐνenin τῷtōthe ἱερῷhierōtemple [courts] ἐπειρῶντοepeirōnto[and] tried διαχειρίσασθαιdiacheirisasthaito kill [me] .
22ἘπικουρίαςEpikouriashelp οὖνoun[But] τυχὼνtychōnI have had τῆςtēs- παρὰparafrom τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod ἄχριachrito τῆςtēs- ἡμέραςhēmerasday , ταύτηςtautēsthis ἕστηκαhestēka[and] I stand [here] μαρτυρόμενοςmartyromenosto testify μικρῷmikrōto small τεtealike . καὶkaiand μεγάλῳmegalōgreat οὐδὲνoudennothing ἐκτὸςektosbeyond λέγωνlegōnI am saying ὧνhōnwhat τεte- οἱhoithe προφῆταιprophētaiprophets ἐλάλησανelalēsansaid μελλόντωνmellontōnwould γίνεσθαιginesthaihappen : καὶkaiand ΜωϋσῆςMōusēsMoses
23εἰeithat παθητὸςpathētoswould suffer , ὁhothe ΧριστόςChristosChrist εἰei[and as the] πρῶτοςprōtosfirst ἐξexfrom ἀναστάσεωςanastaseōsto rise νεκρῶνnekrōn[the] dead , φῶςphōslight μέλλειmelleiwould καταγγέλλεινkatangelleinproclaim τῷtōto λαῷlaōour people καὶkaiand τοῖςtoisto the ἔθνεσι.ethnesiGentiles
24ΤαῦταTautaAt this stage δὲde- αὐτοῦautouof [Paul’s] ἀπολογουμένουapologoumenoudefense , ὁho- ΦῆστοςPhēstosFestus μεγάλῃmegalēin a loud τῇtē- φωνῇphōnēvoice , ἔφηephēsaid ΜαίνῃMainē“ You are insane , ΠαῦλεPaulePaul ! τὰta[Your] πολλάpollagreat σεseyou γράμματαgrammatalearning εἰςeisto μανίανmanianmadness ! ” περιτρέπειperitrepeiis driving
25ὉHo- δὲdeBut ΟὐOuvvv , μαίνομαιmainomai“ I am not insane , φησί,phesihe said . ΚράτιστεKratistemost excellent ΦῆστεPhēsteFestus ; ἀλλὰalla- ἀληθείαςalētheiasof truth καὶkaiand σωφροσύνηςsōphrosynēssobriety . ῥήματαrhēmatawords ἀποφθέγγομαιapophthengomaiI am speaking
26ἐπίσταταιepistataiknows γὰρgarFor περὶperiabout τούτωνtoutōnthese [matters] , ὁhothe βασιλεύςbasileusking πρὸςprosto ὃνhon[him] . καὶkaiand παρρησιαζόμενοςparrēsiazomenosfreely λαλῶlalōI can speak λανθάνεινlanthaneinhas escaped γάρgarbecause αὐτὸνautonhis [notice] , [τι]ti. . . τούτωνtoutōnof this οὐouvvv πείθομαιpeithomaiI am confident that οὐδὲνoudennothing ΟὐOuvvv , γὰρgarFor ἐστινestinwas ἐνenin γωνίᾳgōniaa corner . πεπραγμένονpepragmenondone τοῦτοtouto[it]
27πιστεύειςpisteueisdo you believe βασιλεῦbasileuKing ἈγρίππαAgrippaAgrippa , τοῖςtoisthe προφήταιςprophētaisprophets ? οἶδαoidaI know ὅτιhoti- πιστεύειςpisteueisyou [do] . ”
28ὉHo- δὲdeThen ἈγρίππαςAgrippasAgrippa πρὸςpros[said] to τὸνton- ΠαῦλονPaulonPaul , ἔφηephēsaid ἐνenvvv ὀλίγῳoligō“ Short [time] μεmeme πείθειςpeitheis“ Can you persuade ΧριστιανὸνChristianona Christian ? ” γενέσθαιgenesthaimay become
29ὁhothe δὲde- ΠαῦλοςPaulosPaul [replied] , εἶπενeipenreplied . ΕὐξαίμηνEuxaimēn“ I wish ἂνanthat τῷtō- ΘεῷTheōto God καὶkai- ἐνenvvv ὀλίγῳoligō“ Short [time] καὶkai[or] ἐνenvvv πολλῷpollōmuch , οὐounot μόνονmonononly σὲseyou ἀλλὰallabut καὶkai- πάνταςpantasall τοὺςtouswho ἀκούοντάςakouontashear μουmoume σήμερονsēmeronthis day γενέσθαιgenesthaimay become τοιούτουςtoioutouswhat ὁποῖοςhopoios. . . κἀγὼkagōAnd I εἰμιeimiam , παρεκτὸςparektosexcept for τῶνtōn- δεσμῶνdesmōnchains . ” τούτωνtoutōnthese
30καὶkai- ΤαῦταTautaAt this stage εἰπόντοςeipontoshad made αὐτοῦautouof [Paul’s] ἈνέστηAnestērose , ὁhothe βασιλεὺςbasileusking καὶkaiand ὁhothe ἡγεμὼνhēgemōngovernor ἥhē- τεtealong with ΒερνίκηBernikēBernice καὶkaiand οἱhoithose συγκαθήμενοιsugkathemenoiseated with αὐτοῖςautoisthem .
31καὶkai- ἀναχωρήσαντεςanachōrēsantesOn their way out , ἐλάλουνelalounthey said πρὸςprosto ἀλλήλουςallēlousone another λέγοντεςlegontes- ὅτιhoti- , ΟὐδὲνOudennothing θανάτουthanatouof death ἄξιονaxionworthy ἢēor δεσμῶνdesmōnimprisonment . ” πράσσειprasseihas done ὁho- ἄνθρωποςanthrōposman οὗτοςhoutos“ This
32ἈγρίππαςAgrippasAgrippa δὲdeAnd τῷtōto ΦήστῳPhēstōFestus , ἔφηephēsaid ἈπολελύσθαιApolelysthaihave been released ἐδύνατοedynatocould ὁho- ἄνθρωποςanthrōposman οὗτοςhoutos“ This εἰeiif μὴmēvvv ἐπεκέκλητοepekeklētohe had not appealed ΚαίσαραKaisarato Caesar . ”
