1ἈγαπητοίAgapētoiBeloved , μὴmēvvv παντὶpantievery πνεύματιpneumatispirit , πιστεύετεpisteuetedo not believe ἀλλὰallabut δοκιμάζετεdokimazetetest τὰtathe πνεύματαpneumataspirits εἰei[to see] whether ἐκekfrom τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod . ἐστινestinthey are ὅτιhotiFor πολλοὶpolloimany ψευδοπροφῆταιpseudoprophētaifalse prophets ἐξεληλύθασινexelēlythasinhave gone out εἰςeisinto τὸνtonthe κόσμονkosmonworld .
2ἘνEnBy τούτῳtoutōthis γινώσκετεginōsketeyou will know τὸtothe ΠνεῦμαPneumaSpirit τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God : πᾶνpanEvery πνεῦμαpneumaspirit ὃhothat ὁμολογεῖhomologeiconfesses [that] ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus ΧριστὸνChristonChrist ἐνenin σαρκὶsarki[the] flesh ἐληλυθόταelēlythotahas come ἐκekfrom τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod , ἐστίestiI have
3καὶkaiand πᾶνpanevery πνεῦμαpneumaspirit ὃhothat μὴmēvvv ὁμολογεῖhomologeidoes not confess τὸνton- ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus ΧριστὸνChristonChrist ἐνenin σαρκὶsarki[the] flesh ἐληλυθόταelēlythotahas come ἐκekfrom τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod , οὐκouknot ἐστίestiI have καὶkai- τοῦτόtoutoThis ἐστίestiI have τὸtothe [spirit] τοῦtouof the ἀντιχρίστουantichristouantichrist , ὃhowhich ἀκηκόατεakēkoateyou have heard ὅτιhoti- ἔρχεταιerchetaiis coming καὶkaiand νῦνnynat this time . ἐνenin τῷtōthe κόσμῳkosmōworld ἐστὶνestin[which] is ἤδηēdēalready
4ὙμεῖςHymeisYou , ἐκekfrom τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod ἐστεesteare τεκνίαteknialittle children , καὶkaiand νενικήκατεnenikēkatehave overcome αὐτούςautousthem , ὅτιhotibecause μείζωνmeizōngreater ἐστὶνestinis ὁhoHe who [is] ἐνenin ὑμῖνhyminyou ἢēthan ὁhohe who [is] ἐνenin τῷtōthe κόσμῳkosmōworld .
5αὐτοὶautoiThey ἐκekof τοῦtouthe κόσμουkosmouworld . εἰσί·eisiare διὰdiaThat is why τοῦτοtouto. . . ἐκekperspective , τοῦtoufrom the κόσμουkosmouworld’s λαλοῦσιlalousithey speak καὶkaiand ὁhothe κόσμοςkosmosworld αὐτῶνautōnthem . ἀκούειakoueilistens to
6ἡμεῖςhēmeisWe ἐκekfrom τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod . ἐσμενesmenare ὁhoWhoever γινώσκωνginōskōnknows τὸνton- ΘεὸνTheonGod ἀκούειakoueilistens to ἡμῶνhēmōnus ; ὃςhoswhoever οὐκouknot ἔστινestinis ἐκekfrom τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod οὐκoukvvv ἀκούειakoueidoes not listen to ἡμῶνhēmōnus . ἐκekThat is how τούτουtoutou. . . γινώσκομενginōskomenwe know τὸtothe πνεῦμαpneumaSpirit τῆςtēs- ἀληθείαςalētheiasof truth καὶkaiand τὸtothe πνεῦμαpneumaspirit τῆςtēs- πλάνηςplanēsof deception .
7ἈγαπητοίAgapētoiBeloved , ἀγαπῶμενagapōmenlet us love ἀλλήλουςallēlousone another , ὅτιhotibecause ἡhē- ἀγάπηagapēlove ἐκekfrom τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod . ἐστίestiI have καὶkai- πᾶςpasEveryone ὁhowho ἀγαπῶνagapōnloves ἐκekof τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod γεγέννηταιgegennētaihas been born καὶkaiand γινώσκειginōskeiknows τὸνton- ΘεόνTheonGod .
8ὁhoWhoever μὴmēvvv ἀγαπῶνagapōndoes not love οὐκoukvvv ἔγνωegnōdoes not know τὸνton- ΘεόνTheonGod , ὅτιhotibecause ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod ἀγάπηagapēlove . ἐστίνestinis
9ἘνEnThis is how τούτῳtoutō. . . ἐφανερώθηephanerōthēwas revealed ἡhē- ἀγάπηagapēlove τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod’s ἘνEnThis is how ἡμῖνhēminus ὅτιhoti- : τὸνton- ΥἱὸνHuionSon αὐτοῦautouHis τὸνton- μονογενῆmonogenēone and only ἀπέσταλκενapestalkensent ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod εἰςeisinto τὸνtonthe κόσμονkosmonworld , ἵναhinaso that ζήσωμενzēsōmenwe might live δι’di’through αὐτοῦautouHim .
10ἐνenin τούτῳtoutōthis : ἐστὶνestinconsists ἡhē- ἀγάπηagapē[And] love οὐχouchnot ὅτιhotithat ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe ἠγαπήσαμενegapesamenloved τὸνton- ΘεόνTheonGod , ἀλλ’all’but ὅτιhotithat αὐτὸςautosHe ἠγάπησενēgapēsenloved ἡμᾶςhēmasus καὶkaiand ἀπέστειλεapesteileHe sent them out τὸνton- ΥἱὸνHuionSon αὐτοῦautouHis ἱλασμὸνhilasmon[as the] atoning sacrifice περὶperifor τῶνtōn- ἁμαρτιῶνhamartiōnsins . ἡμῶνhēmōnour
11ἈγαπητοίAgapētoiBeloved , εἰeiif οὕτωςhoutōsso ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod ἠγάπησενēgapēsenloved ἡμᾶςhēmasus , καὶkaialso ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe ὀφείλομενopheilomenought ἀλλήλουςallēlousone another . ἀγαπᾶνagapanto love
12ΘεὸνTheonGod ; οὐδεὶςoudeisNo one πώποτεpōpote. . . τεθέαταιtetheataihas ever seen ἐὰνean[but] if ἀγαπῶμενagapōmenwe love ἀλλήλουςallēlousone another , ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod ἐνenin ἡμῖνhēminus , μένειmeneiremains καὶkaiand ἡhē- ἀγάπηagapēlove αὐτοῦautouHis τετελειωμένηteteleiōmenēperfected ἐστινestinis «ἐνenin ἡμῖν»hēminus .
13ἐνenBy τούτῳtoutōthis γινώσκομενginōskomenwe know ὅτιhotithat ἐνenin αὐτῷautōHim , μένομενmenomenwe remain καὶkaiand αὐτὸςautosHe ἐνenin ἡμῖνhēminus ὅτιhoti- : ἐκekof τοῦtou- ΠνεύματοςPneumatosSpirit . αὐτοῦautouHis δέδωκενdedōkenHe has given ἡμῖνhēminus
14καὶkaiAnd ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe τεθεάμεθαtetheamethahave seen καὶkaiand μαρτυροῦμενmartyroumentestify ὅτιhotithat ὁhothe ΠατὴρPatērFather ἀπέσταλκεapestalkeHe has sent τὸνton[His] ΥἱὸνHuionSon [to be] ΣωτῆραSōtēra[the] Savior τοῦtouof the κόσμουkosmouworld .
15ὋςHosanyone ἂνan. . . ὁμολογήσῃhomologēsēconfesses ὅτιhotithat ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ἐστινestinis ὁhothe ΥἱὸςHuiosSon τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod ἐνenin αὐτῷautōhim , μένειmeneiabides καὶkaiand αὐτὸςautoshe ἐνenin τῷtō- ΘεῷTheōGod .
16καὶkaiAnd ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe ἐγνώκαμενegnōkamenhave come to know καὶkaiand πεπιστεύκαμενpepisteukamenbelieve τὴνtēnthe ἀγάπηνagapēnlove ἣνhēnthat ἔχειecheihas ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod ἐνenfor ἡμῖνhēminus . ὉHO- ΘεὸςTheosGod ἀγάπηagapēlove ; ἐστίestiI have καὶkai- ὁhowhoever μένωνmenōnabides ἐνenin τῇtē- ἀγάπῃagapēlove ἐνenin τῷtō- ΘεῷTheōGod , μένειmeneiabides καὶkaiand ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod ἐνenin αὐτῷautōhim .
17ἘνEnIn τούτῳtoutōthis [way] , τετελείωταιteteleiōtaihas been perfected ἡhē- ἀγάπηagapēlove μεθ’meth’among ἡμῶνhēmōnus , ἵναhinaso that παρρησίανparrēsianconfidence ἔχωμενechōmenwe may have ἐνenon τῇtēthe ἡμέρᾳhēmeraday τῆςtēs- κρίσεωςkriseōsof judgment ; ὅτιhotifor καθὼςkathōsjust like ἐκεῖνόςekeinosHim ἐστίestiI have καὶkai- ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe ἐσμενesmenare ἐνenin τῷtō- κόσμῳkosmōworld τούτῳtoutōthis
18ΦόβοςPhobosfear οὐκoukno ἔστινestinThere is ἐνenin τῇtē- ἀγάπῃagapēlove , ἀλλ’all’but ἡhē- τελείαteleiaperfect ἀγάπηagapēlove ἔξωexōout βάλλειballeidrives τὸνton- φόβονphobonfear , ὅτιhotibecause ὁho- φόβοςphobosfear κόλασινkolasinpunishment . ἔχειecheiinvolves ὁho- δὲde- φοβούμενοςphoboumenosfears οὐouvvv τετελείωταιteteleiōtaihas not been perfected ἐνenin τῇtē- ἀγάπῃagapēlove .
19ἩμεῖςHēmeisWe ἀγαπῶμενagapōmenlove αὐτῶνautōnthem . ὅτιhotibecause αὐτὸςautosHe πρῶτοςprōtosfirst ἠγάπησενēgapēsenloved ἡμᾶςhēmasus .
20ἘάνEanIf τιςtisanyone εἴπῃeipēsays , ὅτιhoti- ἈγαπῶAgapō“ I love τὸνton- ΘεόνTheonGod , ” καὶkai[but] τὸνton- ἀδελφὸνadelphonbrother , αὐτοῦautouhis μισῇmisēhates ψεύστηςpseustēsa liar . ἐστίνestinhe is ὁhoanyone who γὰρgarFor μὴmēvvv ἀγαπῶνagapōndoes not love τὸνton- ἀδελφὸνadelphonbrother , ὃνhonwhom ἑώρακε,eorakehe had seen τὸνton- ΘεὸνTheonGod , ὃνhonwhom οὐχouchvvv ἑώρακεeorakehe had seen ΠῶςPōsHow δύναταιdynataicannot ἀγαπᾶνagapanlove
21καὶkaiAnd ταύτηνtautēnthis τὴνtēn- ἐντολὴνentolēncommandment ἔχομενechomenwe have ἀπ’ap’from αὐτοῦautouHim ἵναhina- : ὁhoWhoever ἀγαπῶνagapōnloves τὸνton- ΘεὸνTheonGod ἀγαπᾷagapamust love καὶkaias well . τὸνton- ἀδελφὸνadelphonbrother αὐτοῦautouhis
