2ΣπλαγχνίζομαιSplanchnizomai“ I have compassion ἐπὶepifor τὸνton[this] ὄχλονochloncrowd , ὅτιhotibecause ἤδηēdē. . . ἡμέραιhēmeraidays τρεῖςtreisthree προσμένουσίprosmenousithey have already been μοιmoiwith Me καὶkaiand οὐκouknothing ἜχουσιEchousi‘ They have τίtivvv φάγωσι·phagosito eat . ”
3καὶkai- ἐὰνeanIf ἀπολύσωapolysōI send αὐτοὺςautousthem νήστειςnēsteishungry , εἰςeisvvv οἶκονoikonhome αὐτῶνautōnvvv ἐκλυθήσονταιeklythēsontaithey will faint ἐνenalong τῇthe ὁδῷhodōway . τινεςtinessome γὰρgarFor αὐτὸνauton. . . ἀπὸapoof μακρόθενmakrothena great distance . ” ἥκασι.ekasihave come
4ΚαὶKai- ἀπεκρίθησανapekrithēsanreplied αὐτῷautō- οἱhoi- μαθηταὶmathētaidisciples αὐτοῦautouHis ΠόθενPothen“ Where τούτουςtoutousall these [people] ? ” δυνήσεταίdynēsetaicould τιςtisanyone ὧδεhōde. . . χορτάσαιchortasaito feed ἄρτωνartōn[find enough] bread ἐπ’ep’in ἐρημίαςerēmiasthis desolate place
5ΚαὶKai- ἐπηρώταepērōtaHe asked αὐτούςautous- . πόσουςposoushow many ἔχετεecheteDo you have ἄρτουςartousbread ? οἱhoithe δὲdeAnd εἰπὼνeipōnHe said ἑπτὰheptaseven
6καὶkaiand παρήγγειλεpareggeile[Jesus] ordered τὸtothe ὄχλῳochlōcrowd . ἀναπεσεῖνanapeseinto sit down ἐπὶepion τῆςtēsthe γῆςgēsground . καὶkaiThen λαβὼνlabōnHe took τοὺςtousthe ἑπτὰheptaseven ἄρτουςartousloaves , εὐχαριστήσαςeucharistēsasgave thanks ἔκλασεeklase[and] broke [it] , καὶkaiand ἐδίδουedidougave [them] τοῖςtoisto μαθηταῖςmathētaisdisciples αὐτοῦautouHis ἵναhina- παρατιθῶσι·paratithosiset before καὶkaiAnd παρέθηκανparethēkanthey distributed [them] τῷto the ὄχλῳochlōcrowd .
7καὶkai. . . εἶχον*eichonThey also had ἰχθύδιαichthydiasmall fish , ὀλίγαoligaa few καὶkai. . . αὐτὰautathem εὐλογήσαςeulogēsas[Jesus] blessed εἰπὲeipesay παρατιθέναιparatithenaibe set before [them] καὶkaias well . αὐτὰautathem
8ἔφαγονephagon[The people] ate δὲdeAnd καὶkaiAs soon as ἐχορτάσθησανechortasthēsanwere satisfied , καὶkaiand ἦρανēran[the disciples] picked up περισσεύματαperisseumatathat were left over . κλασμάτωνklasmatōnof broken pieces ἑπτὰheptaseven σπυρίδαςspyridasbasketfuls
9ἦσανēsanwere [ present ] . δὲdeAnd ὡςhōsabout τετρακισχίλιοιtetrakischilioifour thousand [men] καὶkaiAs soon as ἀπέλυσενapelysen[Jesus] had dismissed αὐτούςautous[the crowd] ,
10ΚαὶKai- ἐμβὰςembasHe got εὐθὺςeuthys- εἰςeisinto τὸtothe πλοῖονploionboat μετὰmetawith τῶνtōn- μαθητῶνmathētōndisciples αὐτοῦautouHis ἦλθενēlthen[and] went εἰςeisto τὰtathe μέρηmerēdistrict ΔαλμανουθάDalmanouthaof Dalmanutha .
11ΚαὶKaiThen ἐξῆλθονexēlthoncame οἱhoithe ΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioiPharisees καὶkaiand ἤρξαντοērxantobegan συζητεῖνsyzēteinto argue with αὐτῷautō[Jesus] , ζητοῦντεςzētountes[by] demanding παρ’par’from αὐτοῦautouHim σημεῖονsēmeiona sign ἀπὸapofrom τοῦtou- οὐρανοῦouranouheaven . πειράζοντεςpeirazontestesting αὐτόνautonHim
12καὶkaiand ἀναστενάξαςanastenaxas[Jesus] sighed deeply τῷin πνεύματιpneumatispirit αὐτοῦautouHis λέγειlegei[and] said , ΤίTi“ Why - γενεὰgeneageneration αὕτηhautē{does] this σημεῖονsēmeiona sign ? ἐπιζητεῖepizēteidemands ἀμὴνamēnTruly λέγωlegōI tell ὑμῖνhyminyou , εἰeino δοθήσεταιdothēsetaiwill be given τῇ- γενεᾷgeneageneration . ” ταύτῃtautēto this σημεῖονsēmeionsign
13καὶkaiAnd ἀφεὶςapheisHe left αὐτοὺςautousthem , εἰςeisto τὸtothe πλοῖονploionboat ἀπέλθῃapelthēto depart πάλινpalin. . . ,
14καὶkaiAnd ἐπελάθοντοepelathonto[the disciples] had forgotten λαβεῖνlabeinto take ἄρτουςartousbread , καὶkai- εἰeiexcept for μὴ. . . ἕναhenaone ἄρτονartonloaf οὐκouk- εἶχονeichonthey had μεθ’meth’with ἑαυτῶνheautōnthem ἐνenin τῷthe πλοίῳploiōboat .
15καὶkai- διεστέλλετοdiestelletoHe cautioned αὐτοῖςautoisthem λέγωνlegōn- . ὉρᾶτεHorate“ Watch out ! ” βλέπετεblepete“ Beware ἀπὸapoof τῆςtēsthe ζύμηςzymēsleaven τῶνtōnof the ΦαρισαίωνPharisaiōnPharisees καὶkaiand τῆςtēs- ζύμηςzymēs- ἩρῴδουHērōdouof Herod . ”
16καὶkai[So] διελογίζοντοdielogizontothey began to discuss πρὸςproswith ἀλλήλουςallēlousone another λέγοντεςlegontes. . . ὅτιhoti- , ἄρτουςartousloaves οὐκoukvvv ἔχομενechomendo we need
17καὶkaiAnd γνοὺςgnousAware of [their conversation] , ho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus λέγειlegei- αὐτοῖςautoisthem τιtianything ? ” διαλογίζεσθεdialogizestheare you debating ὅτιhotiabout ἄρτουςartousbread ? οὐκoukno ἔχετεechetehaving οὔπωoupōvvv νοεῖτεnoeiteDo you still not see οὐδὲoudeor συνίετεsynieteunderstand ? ἔτιetieven πεπωρωμένηνpepōrōmenēnsuch hard ἔχετεecheteDo you have τὴνtēn- καρδίανkardianhearts ? ὑμῶνhymōn. . .
18ὈφθαλμοὺςOphthalmouseyes , ἔχοντεςechontes‘ Having οὐouvvv βλέπετεblepetedo you not see ? καὶkaiAnd ὦταōtaears , ἔχοντεςechonteshaving οὐκoukvvv ἀκούετεakouetedo you not hear ? ’ καὶkaiAnd οὐouvvv μνημονεύετεmnēmoneuetedo you not remember ?
19ὅτεhoteWhen τοὺςtousthe πέντεpentefive ἄρτουςartousloaves ἔκλασαeklasaI broke εἰςeisfor τοὺςtousthe πεντακισχιλίουςpentakischiliousfive thousand , ‹καὶ›kai“ And πόσουςposoushow many κοφίνουςkophinousbasketfuls κλασμάτωνklasmatōnof broken pieces πλήρειςplēreis. . . ἤρατεēratedid you collect ? ” ΛέγουσινLegousinthey answered αὐτῷautō- . ΔώδεκαDōdeka“ Twelve , ”
20ὍτεHotewhen [I broke] δὲde- τοὺςtous- ἙπτάHepta“ Seven , ” εἰςeisfor τοὺςtousthe τετρακισχιλίουςtetrakischiliousfour thousand , πόσωνposōnhow many σπυρίδωνspyridōnbasketfuls πληρώματαplērōmata. . . κλασμάτωνklasmatōnof broken pieces ἤρατεēratedid you collect ? ” οἱhoi- δὲde- εἰπὼνeipōnHe said ἙπτάHepta“ Seven , ”
21ΚαὶKai- ἔλεγενelegenHe asked αὐτοῖςautoisthem , ΟὔπωOupō“ vvv συνίετεsynieteDo you still not understand ? ”
22ΚαὶKai[When] ἔρχεταιerchetaicomes εἰςeisat ΒηθσαϊδάBēthsaidaBethsaida . ΚαὶKai- φέρουσινpherousin[some people] brought αὐτῷautō- τυφλὸνtyphlona blind [man] καὶkaiand παρακαλοῦσινparakalousinbegged αὐτὸνauton[Jesus] ἵναhinato αὐτοῦautouhim . ἅψηταιhapsētaitouch
23καὶkaiSo ἐπιλαβόμενοςepilabomenosHe took τῆςtēsby the χειρὸςcheiroshand τοῦtouthe τυφλοῦtyphloublind [man] ἘξήγαγενExēgagen[Jesus] had led αὐτὸνauton- ἔξωexōout τῆςtēsof the κώμηςkōmēsvillage . καὶkaiThen πτύσαςptysasHe spit εἰςeison τὰta- ὄμματαommataeyes αὐτοῦautou[the man’s] ἐπιθεὶςepitheis[and] placed τὰςtas[His] χεῖραςcheirashands αὐτῷautōon him . ἐπηρώταepērōtaHe asked αὐτόνauton- . ΕἴEi“ vvv τιtianything ? ” βλέπειblepei[and] seeing
24ΚαὶKai- ἀναβλέψαςanablepsas[The man] looked up ἔλεγε·elege[Jesus] declared ΒλέπωBlepō“ I can see τοὺςtousthe ἀνθρώπουςanthrōpouspeople , ὡςhōslike δένδραdendratrees περιπατοῦνταςperipatountaswalking around . ”
25ΕἶταEitaOnce again πάλινpalin. . . ἐπέθηκεepethekeHe placed τὰςtas[His] χεῖραςcheirashands ἐπὶepion τοὺςtous- ὀφθαλμοὺςophthalmouseyes , αὐτοῦautou[the man’s] καὶkaiand when ἐποίησένepoiēsenhas done αὐτὸνautonhim ἀναβλέψαι,anablepsai[and] looking up καὶkai- ἀποκατεστάθη,apokatestathewas restored . καὶkai- ἀνέβλεψεaneblepsehe received his sight τηλαυγῶςtēlaugōsclearly . ἅπανταςhapantaseveryone
26καὶkai- ἀπέστειλενapesteilen[Jesus] sent αὐτὸνautonhim εἰςeisvvv οἶκονoikonhome αὐτοῦautouvvv λέγωνlegōn[and] said , ΜηδὲMēde“ vvv εἰςeisinto τὴνtēnthe κώμηνkōmēnvillage .” εἰσέλθῃςeiselthēsDo not go back ΜηδὲMēde“ vvv εἴπῃςeipēsthat you don’t tell τίνιtiniwhat ἐνenOn τῇthe κώμῃ.komevillage {to another} ,
27καὶkai- ἐξῆλθενexēlthenwent on ho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus καὶkaiand οἱhoi- μαθηταὶmathētaidisciples αὐτοῦautouHis εἰςeisto τὰςtasthe κώμαςkōmasvillages ΚαισαρείαςKaisareiasaround Caesarea τῆςtēs- ΦιλίππουPhilippouPhilippi . καὶkai- ἐνenOn τῇthe ὁδῷhodōway , ἐπηρώταepērōtaHe questioned τοὺςtous- μαθητὰςmathētasdisciples αὐτοῦautouHis λέγωνlegōn- αὐτοῖςautois- : ΤίναTina“ Who μεmeI λέγουσινlegousinsay οἱhoi- ἄνθρωποιanthrōpoi{do} people εἶναιeinaiam ? ”
28οἱhoi- δὲde- ἀπεκρίθησανapekrithēsanreplied ἸωάννηνIōannēn“ [Some say] John τὸνtonthe ΒαπτιστήνBaptistēnBaptist ; καὶkai- ἄλλοιalloiothers [say] ἨλίανĒlianElijah ; ἄλλοιalloiothers [say] δὲdeand still ἕναhenaone τῶνtōnof the προφητῶνprophētōnprophets . ”
29ΚαὶKai- αὐτὸςautos[Jesus] λέγειlegei- αὐτούςautous- . ὙμεῖςHymeisyou ? ” δὲde“ But [what about] τίναtina“ Who μεmeI λέγετεlegetedo you say εἶναιeinaiam ? ” ἈποκριθεὶςApokritheisanswered δὲde“ But [what about] ho- ΠέτροςPetrosPeter λέγειlegei- αὐτῷautō- , ΣὺSy“ You εἶeiare hothe ΧριστόςChristosChrist . ”
30ΚαὶKaiAnd ἐπετίμησενepetimēsen[Jesus] warned αὐτοῖςautoisthem ἵναhina- μηδενὶmēdeni. . . λέγωσιlegosinot to tell anyone περὶperiabout αὐτοῦautouHim .
31ΚαὶKaiThen ἤρξατοērxatoHe began διδάσκεινdidaskeinto teach αὐτοὺςautousthem ὅτιhotithat δεῖdeimust τὸνtonthe ΥἱὸνHuionSon τοῦtou- ἀνθρώπουanthrōpouof Man πολλὰpollamany things παθεῖνpatheinsuffer καὶkaiand ἀποδοκιμασθῆναιapodokimasthēnaibe rejected ἀπὸapoof τῶνtōnof the πρεσβυτέρωνpresbyterōnelders , καὶkai- τῶνtōn- ἀρχιερέωνarchiereōnchief priests , καὶkaiand τῶνtōn- γραμματέωνgrammateōnscribes , καὶkaiand ἀποκτανθῆναιapoktanthēnai[that] He must be killed καὶkaiand μετὰmetaafter τρεῖςtreisthree ἡμέραςhēmerasdays ἀναστῆναιanastēnairise [again] .
32καὶkai- παρρησίᾳparrēsiaquite frankly , τὸνton[this] λόγονlogonmessage ἐλάλειelaleiHe spoke καὶkai- προσλαβόμενοςproslabomenostook Him aside αὐτὸνauton. . . ho- ΠέτροςPetrosPeter ἤρξατοērxato[and] began ἐπιτιμᾶνepitimanto rebuke αὐτῷautōHim .
33Ho- δὲdeBut [Jesus] , ἐπιστραφεὶςepistrapheisturning καὶkaiand ἰδὼνidōnlooking at τοὺςtous- μαθητὰςmathētasdisciples , αὐτοῦautouHis ἐπετίμησεepetimese[and] rebuked τῷthe ΠέτρῳPetrōPeter λέγωνlegōn- ὝπαγεHypage“ Get ὀπίσωopisōbehind μουmouMe , ΣατανᾶSatanaSatan ! ὅτιhotiFor οὐouvvv φρονεῖςphroneisyou do not have in mind τὰtathe τοῦtouthings ΘεοῦTheouof God , ἀλλὰallabut τὰtathe τῶνtōnthings ἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōnof men . ”
34ΚαὶKaiThen προσκαλεσάμενοςproskalesamenos[Jesus] called τὸνtonthe ὄχλονochloncrowd {to Him} σὺνsynalong with τοῖςtois- μαθηταῖςmathētaisdisciples , αὐτοῦautouHis εἶπενeipen[and] He told αὐτοῖςautoisthem , ὅστιςhostis([Barabbas] θέλειtheleiwants ὀπίσωopisōafter μουmouMe , ἀκολουθεῖν,akoloutheinfollow ἀπαρνησάσθωaparnēsasthōhe must deny ἑαυτὸνheautonhimself καὶkaiand ἀράτωaratōtake up τὸνton- σταυρὸνstauroncross αὐτοῦautouhis καὶkaiand ἀκολουθείτωakoloutheitōfollow μοιmoiMe .
35ὃςhoswhoever γὰρgarFor ἂνan. . . θέλῃthelēwants τὴνtēn- ψυχὴνpsychēnlife αὐτοῦautouhis σῶσαιsōsaito save ἀπολέσειapoleseiwill lose αὐτήνautēnit , ὃςhoswhoever δ’d’but ἂνan. . . ἀπολέσῃapolesēloses τὴνtēn- ἑαυτοῦheautouhis ψυχὴνpsychēnlife ἕνεκενhenekenfor My sake ἐμοῦemou. . . καὶkaiand τοῦtoufor the εὐαγγελίουeuangeliougospel ΟὕτωςHoutōs[this] σώσειsōseiwill save αὐτήνautēnit .
36ΤίTiWhat γὰρgar- ὠφελήσειopheleseidoes it profit ἄνθρωπονanthrōpona man ἐὰνeanvvv κερδήσῃkerdēsēhe gains τὸνtonthe κόσμονkosmonworld , ὅλονholonwhole καὶkaiyet ζημιωθῇzēmiōthēforfeits τὴνtēn- ψυχὴνpsychēnsoul ? αὐτοῦautouhis
37- ΤίTi“ Why δώσειdōseiwill give ἄνθρωποςanthrōpos{can} a man ἀντάλλαγμαantallagmain exchange τῆςtēsfor ψυχῆςpsychēssoul ? αὐτοῦautouhis
38ὃςhosIf anyone γὰρgar- ἐὰνeanvvv ἐπαισχυνθῇepaischynthēis ashamed of μεmeMe καὶkaiand τοὺςtous- ἐμοὺςemousMy λόγουςlogouswords ἐνenin τῇ- γενεᾷgeneageneration , ταύτῃtautēthis τῇ- μοιχαλίδιmoichalidiadulterous καὶkaiand ἁμαρτωλῷhamartōlōsinful καὶkaiand hothe ΥἱὸςHuiosSon τοῦtou- ἀνθρώπουanthrōpouof Man ἐπαισχυνθήσεταιepaischynthēsetaiwill also be ashamed of αὐτὸνautonhim ὅτανhotanwhen ἔλθῃelthēHe comes ἐνenin τῇ- δόξῃdoxēglory τοῦtou- ΠατρὸςPatrosFather’s αὐτοῦautouHis μετὰmetawith τῶνtōnthe ἀγγέλωνangelōnangels . ” τῶνtōn- ἁγίωνhagiōnholy
