1ὉμοίωςHomoiōsin the same way , αἱhaithe γυναῖκεςgynaikeswomen ὑποτασσόμεναιhypotassomenai[and] were submissive τοῖςtoisto ἰδίοιςidiois[their] ἀνδράσινandrasinhusbands , ἵναhinaso that καὶkaiand εἰeiif τινεςtines[they] ἀπειθοῦσιapeithousiwho reject τῷtōthe λόγῳlogōword , διὰdiaby τῆςtēsthe τῶνtōnof [their] γυναικῶνgynaikōnwives ἀναστροφῆςanastrophēsbehavior ἄνευaneuwithout λόγουlogouwords κερδηθήσονταιkerdēthēsontaithey will be won over
2ἐποπτεύσαντεςepopteusanteswhen they see τὴνtēn- ἐνenvvv φόβῳphobō[and] reverent ἁγνὴνhagnēnpure ἀναστροφὴνanastrophēndemeanor . ὑμῶνhymōnyour
3ὧνhōn[Your beauty] ἔστωestōcome οὐχouch{should} not ὁho[from] ἔξωθενexōthenoutward ἐμπλοκῆςemplokēs[such as] braided τριχῶνtrichōnhair καὶkaior περιθέσεωςperitheseōs- χρυσίωνchrysiōngold [jewelry] ἢēor ἐνδύσεωςendyseōs- ἱματίωνhimatiōnfine clothes , κόσμοςkosmosadornment ,
4ἀλλ’all’but ὁhofrom the κρυπτὸςkryptosinner τῆςtēsof [your] καρδίαςkardiasheart , ἄνθρωποςanthrōposdisposition ἐνen- τῷtōthe ἀφθάρτῳaphthartōunfading [ beauty ] τοῦtouof a πραέωςpraeōsgentle καὶkaiand ἡσυχίουhēsychiouquiet πνεύματοςpneumatosspirit , ὅhowhich ἐστινestinis ἐνώπιονenōpionsight . τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouin God’s πολυτελέςpolytelesprecious
5οὕτωhoutōso γάρgarFor ποτεpoteof the past καὶkai- αἱhai- ἅγιαιhagiaiholy γυναῖκεςgynaikeswomen αἱhaithe ἐλπίζουσαιelpizousaiThey put their hope ἐπὶepi[are] on ΤὸνTon- ΘεόνTheonGod — ἐκόσμουνekosmounadorned ἑαυτάςheautasthemselves . ὑποτασσόμεναιhypotassomenai[and] were submissive τοῖςtoisto ἰδίοιςidiois[their] ἀνδράσινandrasinhusbands ,
6ὡςhōsjust as ΣάρραSarraSarah ὑπήκουσεupekouseobeyed τῷtō- ἈβραάμAbraamAbraham κύριονkyrionlord . αὐτὸνautonhim καλοῦσαkalousa[and] called ἧςhēs[her] ἐγενήθητεegenēthēte[And] you are τέκναteknachildren ἀγαθοποιοῦσαιagathopoiousaiif you do what is right καὶkaiand μὴmērefuse φοβούμεναιphoboumenaito give way μηδεμίανmēdemian. . . πτόησινptoēsinto fear .
7ΟἱHoi- ἄνδρεςandresHusbands , ὁμοίωςhomoiōsin the same way , συνοικοῦντεςsynoikountestreat κατὰkata{with} γνῶσινgnōsinconsideration ὡςhōsas ἀσθενεστέρῳasthenesterōa delicate σκεύειskeueivessel , τῷtō[your] γυναικείῳgynaikeiōwives ἀπονέμοντεςaponemontes. . . τιμήνtimēn{with} honor ὡςhōsas καὶkaiand συγκληρονόμοιsugkleronomoico-heirs χάριτοςcharitosof [the] gracious gift ζωῆςzōēsof life , εἰςeisso that τὸto- μὴmēvvv ἐγκόπτεσθαιegkoptesthaiwill not be hindered . τὰςtas- προσευχὰςproseuchasprayers ὑμῶνhymōnyour
8τὸto- δὲdevvv τέλοςtelosFinally , πάντεςpantesall [of you] , ὁμόφρονεςhomophrones[be] like-minded συμπαθεῖςsympatheis[and] sympathetic , φιλάδελφοιphiladelphoilove as brothers , εὔσπλαγχνοιeusplanchnoi[be] tenderhearted φιλόφρονες,philophroneslove as brothers ,
9μὴmēvvv ἀποδιδόντεςapodidontesDo not repay κακὸνkakonevil ἀντὶantiwith κακοῦkakouevil ἢēor λοιδορίανloidorianinsult ἀντὶantiwith λοιδορίαςloidoriasinsult , τοὐναντίονtounantion. . . δὲdebut εὐλογοῦντεςeulogounteswith blessing , εἰδότεςeidotes[and] in the knowledge that ὅτιhotibecause εἰςeisto τοῦτοtoutothis ἐκλήθητεeklēthēteyou were called ἵναhinaso that εὐλογίανeulogiana blessing . κληρονομήσητεklēronomēsēteyou may inherit
10ὉHo“ Whoever γὰρgarFor , θέλωνthelōnwould ζωὴνzōēnlife ἀγαπᾶνagapanlove καὶkaiand ἰδεῖνideinsee ἡμέραςhēmerasdays ἀγαθὰςagathasgood παυσάτωpausatōmust keep τὴνtēn[his] γλῶσσανglōssantongue αὐτοῦautouHis ἀπὸapofrom κακοῦkakouevil καὶkaiand χείληcheilē[his] lips αὐτοῦautouHis τοῦtoufor what [is] μὴmēvvv λαλῆσαιlalēsaispeech . δόλονdolondeceitful
11ἐκκλινάτωekklinatōHe must turn ἀπὸapofrom κακοῦkakouevil καὶkaiand ποιησάτωpoiēsatōdo ἀγαθόνagathongood ; ζητησάτωzētēsatōhe must seek εἰρήνηνeirēnēnpeace καὶkaiand διωξάτωdiōxatōpursue αὐτήνautēnit .
12ὅτιhotiFor ὀφθαλμοὶophthalmoi[the] eyes ΚυρίουKyriouof [the] Lord ἐπὶepi[are] on δικαίουςdikaious[the] righteous , καὶkaiand ὦταōtaears αὐτοῦautouHis εἰςeisare inclined to δέησινdeēsinprayer . αὐτῶνautōntheir πρόσωπονprosōpon[the] face δὲdeBut ΚυρίουKyriouof [the] Lord ἐπὶepi[is] against ποιοῦνταςpoiountasthose who do κακάkakaevil .”
13ΚαὶKai- τίςtisWho ὁho- κακώσωνkakōsōncan harm ὑμᾶςhymasyou ἐὰνeanif τοῦtoufor what [is] ἀγαθοῦagathougood ? μιμηταὶmimētaiwill imitate γένησθεgenēstheyou are
14Ἀλλ’All’But εἰeiif καὶkaieven πάσχοιτεpaschoiteyou should suffer διὰdiafor δικαιοσύνηνdikaiosynēnwhat is right , μακάριοιmakarioi[you are] blessed . ΤὸνTon- δὲdeBut φόβονphobonthey fear ; αὐτῶνautōnwhat μὴmēvvv φοβηθῆτεphobēthēteDo not fear μηδὲmēdevvv ταραχθῆτεtarachthētedo not be shaken .”
15ΚύριονKyrion[as] Lord . δὲdeBut ΤὸνTon- ΘεόνTheonGod — ἁγιάσατεhagiasatesanctify ἐνenin ταῖςtais- καρδίαιςkardiaishearts ὑμῶνhymōnyour ἕτοιμοιhetoimoibe prepared δὲdeBut ἀεὶaeiAlways πρὸςprosto ἀπολογίανapologiangive a defense παντὶpantito everyone τῷtōwho αἰτοῦντιaitountiasks ὑμᾶςhymasyou λόγονlogonthe reason περὶperifor τῆςtēsthe ἐνen[that is] in ὑμῖνhyminyou . ἐλπίδοςelpidoshope μετὰmetawith πραΰτητοςprautētosgentleness καὶkaiand φόβουphobourespect ,
16συνείδησινsyneidēsinconscience , ἔχοντεςechonteskeeping ἀγαθήνagathēna clear ἵναhinaso that ἐνenvvv ᾧhōvvv καταλαλοῦσινkatalalousinthey slander ὑμῶνhymōnby your ὅςhoswho κακοποιῶνkakopoiōnevildoers , καταισχυνθῶσινkataischynthōsinmay be put to shame οἱhoi. . . ἐπηρεάζοντεςepēreazontes. . . ὑμῶνhymōnby your τὴνtēn- ἀγαθὴνagathēngood ἐνenin ΧριστῷChristōChrist . ἀναστροφήνanastrophēnbehavior
17κρεῖττονkreitton[it is] better , γὰρgarFor ἀγαθοποιοῦνταςagathopoiountas[for] doing good εἰeiif θέλοιtheloi[it is] τὸto- θέλημαthelēmawill , τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod’s πάσχεινpascheinto suffer ἢēthan κακοποιοῦνταςkakopoiountasfor doing evil .
18ὅτιhotiFor καὶkaialso ΧριστὸςChristosChrist ἅπαξhapaxonce for all , περὶperifor ἁμαρτιῶνhamartiōnsins ἔπαθε,epathesuffered δίκαιοςdikaios[the] righteous ὑπὲρhyperfor ἀδίκωνadikōn[the] unrighteous , ἵναhinato ὑμᾶςhymasyou προσαγάγῃprosagagēbring τῷtō- ΘεῷTheōto God . θανατωθεὶςthanatōtheisHe was put to death μὲνmen- σαρκὶsarkiin [the] body ζωοποιηθεὶςzōopoiētheismade alive δὲdebut πνεύματιpneumatiin [the] Spirit ,
19ἐνenin ᾧhōwhom καὶkaivvv τοῖςtoisto the ἐνenin φυλακῇphylakēprison πνεύμασιpneumasito [the] spirits πορευθεὶςporeutheisHe also went ἐκήρυξενekēryxen[and] preached
20ἀπειθήσασίapeithesasiwho disobeyed ποτεpotelong ago ὅτεhotewhen ἀπεξεδέχετοapexedechetowaited ἡhē- τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod μακροθυμίαmakrothymiapatiently ἐνenin ἡμέραιςhēmerais[the] days ΝῶεNōeof Noah κατασκευαζομένηςkataskeuazomenēswas being built . κιβωτοῦkibōtou[while the] ark εἰςeisIn ἣνhēn[the ark] ὀλίγαιoligaia few τοῦτ’tout’[only] ἔστινestin. . . ὀκτὼoktōeight ψυχαίpsychaisouls , διεσώθησανdiesōthēsanwere saved δι’di’through ὕδατοςhydatoswater .
21ὃho[this water] ἀντίτυπονantityponsymbolizes νῦνnyn[that] now καὶkaiAnd ὑμᾶςhymasyou {also} — σῴζειsōzeisaves βάπτισμαbaptisma[the] baptism οὐounot σαρκὸςsarkosfrom the body , ἀπόθεσιςapothesisthe removal ῥύπουrhypouof dirt ἀλλὰallabut συνειδήσεωςsyneidēseōsconscience ἀγαθῆςagathēsa clear ἐπερώτημαeperōtēma[the] pledge of εἰςeistoward ΘεόνTheonGod — δι’di’through ἀναστάσεωςanastaseōs[the] resurrection ἸησοῦIēsouof Jesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist ,
22ὅςhoswho ἐστινestin[and] is ἐνenat δεξιᾷdexia[the] right hand τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , πορευθεὶςporeutheishas gone εἰςeisinto οὐρανόνouranonheaven ὑποταγέντωνhypotagentōnsubject αὐτῷautōto Him . ἀγγέλωνangelōn[with] angels , καὶkai- ἐξουσιῶνexousiōnauthorities , καὶkaiand δυνάμεωνdynameōnpowers
