2ἐπιθυμεῖτεepithymeiteYou crave καὶkai[what] οὐκouk{you do} not ἔχετεechetehave ; φονεύετεphoneueteyou kill καὶkaiand ζηλοῦτεzēloutecovet , καὶkaibut οὐouvvv δύνασθεdynastheare unable ἐπιτυχεῖνepitycheinto obtain [it] . μάχεσθεmachestheYou quarrel καὶkaiand πολεμεῖτεpolemeitefight . καὶkaiand οὐκoukvvv ἔχετεecheteYou do not have , διὰdiabecause τὸto- μὴ{do} not αἰτεῖσθαιaiteisthaiask . ὑμᾶςhymasyou
3αἰτεῖτεaiteite[And when] you do ask καὶkai. . . , οὐou{you do} not λαμβάνετεlambanetereceive , διότιdiotibecause κακῶςkakōswith wrong motives , αἰτεῖσθεaiteistheyou ask ἵναhinathat ἐνenon ταῖςtais- ἡδοναῖςhēdonaispleasures . ὑμῶνhymōnyour δαπανήσητεdapanēsēteyou may squander [it]
4μοιχοίmoichoiadulterers — καὶkai. . . , ΜοιχαλίδεςMoichalides[You] adulteresses ! οὐκoukvvv οἴδατεoidateDo you not know ὅτιhotithat - φιλίαphiliafriendship τοῦtouwith the κόσμουkosmouworld ἔχθραechthrahostility τοῦtou[toward] ΘεοῦTheouGod ? ἐστινestinis ὃςhoswhoever ἂνan. . . οὖνounTherefore , βουληθῇboulēthēchooses φίλοςphilosa friend εἶναιeinaito be τοῦtouof the κόσμουkosmouworld ἐχθρὸςechthrosan enemy τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God . καθίσταταιkathistatairenders himself
5ēOr δοκεῖτεdokeitedo you think ὅτιhoti- κενῶςkenōswithout reason [that] the γραφὴgraphēScripture λέγειlegeisays ΠρὸςProswith φθόνονphthononenvy ? ἐπιποθεῖepipotheiyearns τὸtothe πνεῦμαpneumaSpirit ho- κατῴκησενkatōkēsen[and] settled ἐνenin ἡμῖνhēminus
6μείζοναmeizonamore δὲdeBut δίδωσιdidosiHe gives [us] χάρινcharingrace . διὸdioThis is why λέγειlegeiit says : Ho“ - ΘεὸςTheosGod ὑπερηφάνοιςhyperēphanois[the] proud , ἀντιτάσσεταιantitassetaiopposes ταπεινοῖςtapeinoisto [the] humble .” δὲdebut δίδωσιdidosiHe gives [us] χάρινcharingrace
7ὙποτάγητεHypotagēteSubmit yourselves , οὖνounthen , τῷ- ΘεῷTheōto God . ἀντίστητεantistēteResist τῷthe διαβόλῳdiabolōdevil , καὶkaiand φεύξεταιpheuxetaihe will flee ἀφ’aph’from ὑμῶνhymōnyou .
8ἐγγίσατεengisateDraw near τῷ- ΘεῷTheōto God , καὶkaiand ἐγγιεῖ*engieiHe will draw near ὑμῖνhyminto you . καθαρίσατεkatharisateCleanse χεῖραςcheiras[your] hands , ἁμαρτωλοίhamartōloi[you] sinners , καὶkaiand ἁγνίσατεhagnisatepurify καρδίαςkardias[your] hearts , δίψυχοιdipsychoi[you] double-minded .
9ταλαιπωρήσατεtalaipōrēsateGrieve , καὶkai- πενθήσατεpenthēsatemourn , καὶkaiand κλαύσατεklausateweep . ho- γέλωςgelōslaughter ὑμῶνhymōnyour εἰςeisto πένθοςpenthosmourning , μεταστραφήτωmetastraphetoTurn καὶkaiand [your] χαρὰcharajoy εἰςeisto κατήφειανkatēpheiangloom .
10ταπεινώθητεtapeinōthēteHumble yourselves ἐνώπιονenōpionbefore τοῦtou- ΚυρίουKyriou[the] Lord , καὶkaiand ὑψώσειhypsōseiHe will exalt ὑμᾶςhymasyou .
11Μὴ{do] not καταλαλεῖτεkatalaleiteslander ἀλλήλωνallēlōnone another . ἀδελφοίadelphoiBrothers , hoAnyone who καταλαλῶνkatalalōnspeaks against ἀδελφοῦadelphou[his] brother καὶkaiand κρίνωνkrinōnjudges τὸνtonvvv ἀδελφὸνadelphon[him] αὐτοῦautouvvv καταλαλεῖkatalaleispeaks against νόμουnomou[the] law καὶkaiand κρίνειkrineijudges νόμονnomon[it] . εἰeiif δὲdeAnd νόμονnomon[it] . κρίνειςkrineisyou judge οὐκouknot εἶeiyou are ποιητὴςpoiētēsa practitioner νόμουnomouof [the] law , ἀλλὰallabut κριτήςkritēsa judge [of it] .
12εἷςheisonly one ἐστινestinThere is ho- νομοθέτηςnomothetēsLawgiver καὶkaiand κριτήςkritēsJudge , hothe [One who] δυνάμενοςdynamenosis able σῶσαιsōsaito save καὶkaiand ἀπολέσαιapolesaidestroy . σὺsyyou δὲdeBut τίςtiswho εἶeiare ὃςhoswhoever κρίνειςkrineisyou judge τὸνtonvvv ἕτερονheteronSome
13ἌγεAgeCome νῦνnynnow , οἱhoiyou who λέγοντεςlegontessay , ΣήμερονSēmeron“ Today καὶkai- αὔριονauriontomorrow πορευσόμεθαporeusomethawe will go εἰςeisto τήνδεtēndethis or that τὴνtēn- πόλινpolincity , καὶkai- ποιήσομενpoiēsomenspend ἐκεῖekeithere , ἐνιαυτὸνeniautona year ἕναhenaone καὶkai- ἐμπορευσόμεθαemporeusomethacarry on business , καὶkaiand κερδήσομενkerdēsomenmake a profit . ”
14οἵτινεςhoitinesYou οὐκouk. . . ἐπίστασθεepistasthedo not even know ‹τὸ›towhat [will happen] τῆςtēsvvv αὔριονauriontomorrow ! ποίαpoiaWhat [is] γάρgar- - ζωὴzōēlife ? ὑμῶνhymōnyour ἀτμὶςatmisa mist γάρgar- ἔσταιestaiwill - πρὸςprosvvv ὀλίγονoligonfor a little [while] φαινομένηphainomenēthat appears ἔπειταepeitathen δὲdevvv καὶkaiand ἀφανιζομένηaphanizomenēvanishes .
15ἈντὶAntiInstead , τοῦtou- λέγεινlegeinto say , ὑμᾶςhymasyou [ought] ἘὰνEan“ If hothe ΚύριοςKyriosLord θελήσῃthelēsēis willing , καὶkai- ζήσομενzēsomenwe will live καὶkaiand ποιήσομενpoiēsomendo τοῦτοtoutothis ēor ἐκεῖνοekeinothat . ”
16νῦνnynAs it is , δὲdevvv καυχᾶσθεkauchastheyou boast ἐνenin ταῖςtais- ἀλαζονείαις*alazoneiaisproud intentions . ὑμῶνhymōnyour πᾶσαpasaAll καύχησιςkauchēsisboasting τοιαύτηtoiautēsuch πονηράponēraevil . ἐστινestinis
17εἰδότιeidotiwho knows οὖνounthen , καλὸνkalon[the] right thing ποιεῖνpoieinto do , καὶkaiyet μὴfails ποιοῦντιpoiountito do [it] , ἁμαρτίαhamartiaguilty of sin . αὐτῷautōAnyone , ἐστινestinis
