3οὕτωhoutōso καὶkaialso , ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe ὅτεhotewhen ἦμενēmenwe were νήπιοιnēpioichildren , ὑπὸhypounder τὰtathe στοιχεῖαstoicheiabasic principles τοῦtouof the κόσμουkosmouworld . ἦμενēmenwe were δεδουλωμένοιdedoulōmenoienslaved

4ὅτεhotewhen δὲdeBut ἔλθῃelthēshould come τὸtothe πλήρωμαplērōma{had} fully τοῦtou- χρόνουchronoutime ἐξαπέστειλενexapesteilensent ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod τὸνton- ΥἱὸνHuionSon , αὐτοῦautouHis γενόμενονgenomenonborn ἐκekof γυναικόςgynaikosa woman , γενόμενονgenomenonborn ὑπὸhypounder νόμονnomon[the] law ,

5ἵναhina- τοὺςtousthose ὑπὸhypounder νόμονnomon[the] law , ἐξαγοράσῃexagorasēto redeem ἵναhina- τὴνtēn[our] υἱοθεσίανhuiothesianadoption as sons . ἀπολάβωμενapolabōmenwe might receive

6ὍτιHotibecause δέdeAnd ἐστεesteyou are υἱοίhuioisons , ἐξαπέστειλενexapesteilensent ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod τὸtothe ΠνεῦμαPneumaSpirit τοῦtouof ΥἱοῦHuiouSon αὐτοῦautouHis εἰςeisinto τὰςtas- καρδίαςkardiashearts , ἡμῶνhēmōnour κρᾶζονkrazoncrying out , ἈββᾶAbba“ Abba , ὁho- ΠατήρPatērFather ! ”

7ὥστεhōsteSo οὐκέτιouketino longer εἶeiyou are δοῦλοςdoulosa slave , ἀλλ’all’- υἱὸςhuiosson εἰeiif δὲdeNevertheless , υἱόςhuiosa son , καὶkai[you are] also κληρονόμοςklēronomosan heir ΘεοῦTheouGod . διὰdiathrough ΧριστοῦChristouChrist

8ἈλλὰAlla- τότεtoteFormerly , μὲνmen- οὐκoukvvv εἰδότεςeidoteswhen you did not know ΘεὸνTheonGod , ἐδουλεύσατεedouleusateyou were slaves τοῖςtoisto those who μὴmēnot φύσειphyseiby nature οὖσιousiare θεοῖςtheoisgods .

9νῦνnynnow that δὲdeBut γνόντεςgnontesyou know ΘεόνTheonGod , μᾶλλονmallonor rather δὲdevvv γνωσθέντεςgnōsthentesare known ὑπὸhypoby ΘεοῦTheouGod , πῶςpōshow [is it that] ἐπιστρέφετεepistrepheteyou are turning πάλινpalinback ἐπὶepito τὰtathose ἀσθενῆasthenēweak καὶkaiand πτωχὰptōchaworthless στοιχεῖαstoicheiaprinciples ? οἷςhoisby [them] πάλινpalinagain ? ἄνωθενanōthenall over δουλεύειν*douleueinto be enslaved θέλετεtheleteDo you wish

10ἡμέραςhēmeras[special] days παρατηρεῖσθεparatēreistheYou are observing καὶkaiand μῆναςmēnasmonths καὶkaiand καιροὺςkairousseasons καὶkaiand ἐνιαυτούςeniautousyears !

11φοβοῦμαιphoboumaiI fear ὑμᾶςhymasfor you , μήπωςmeposno-how εἰκῇeikēin vain . κεκοπίακαkekopiakamy efforts εἰςeisfor ὑμᾶςhymasyou

12ΓίνεσθεGinesthebecome ὡςhōslike ἐγώegōme , ὅτιhotifor κἀγὼkagōI became ὡςhōslike ὑμεῖςhymeisyou . ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , δέομαιdeomaiI beg ὑμῶνhymōnyou , οὐδένouden. . . . μεme. . . ἠδικήσατεēdikēsateYou have done me no wrong

13ΟἴδατεOidateYou know δὲde- ὅτιhotithat δι’di’it was because of ἀσθένειανastheneianan illness τῆςtēs. . . σαρκὸςsarkos. . . εὐηγγελισάμηνeuēngelisamēn[that] I first preached the gospel ὑμῖνhyminto you . τὸto. . . πρότερονproteron. . .

14καὶkaiAnd τὸνton- πειρασμὸνpeirasmon[was a] trial μουmoumy τὸνton- ἐνen[although] τῇtē- σαρκίsarki[illness] μουmoumy οὐκoukvvv ἐξουθενήσατεexouthenēsateyou did not despise οὐδὲoude[or] ἐξεπτύσατεexeptysatereject [me] . ἀλλ’all’- ὡςhōsas if [I were] ἄγγελονangelonan angel ΘεοῦTheouof God , ἐδέξασθέedexastheyou welcomed μεmeme ὡςhōsas if [I were] ΧριστὸνChristonChrist ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus [Himself] .

15τιςtisa οὖνounthen [has become] ἐνen[although] ὁho- μακαρισμὸςmakarismosblessing ? ὑμῶνhymōnof your μαρτυρῶmartyrōI can testify γὰρgarFor ὑμῖνhymin- ὅτιhotithat , εἰeiif δυνατὸνdynaton[it were] possible , τοὺςtous- ὀφθαλμοὺςophthalmouseyes ὑμῶνhymōnyour ἐξορύξαντεςexoryxantesyou would have torn out ἂνan. . . ἐδώκατέedōkate[and] given [them] μοιmoito me .

16ὥστεhōstevvv ἐχθρὸςechthrosenemy ὑμῶνhymōnyour γέγοναgegonaHave I now become ἀληθεύωνalētheuōn[by] telling you the truth ὑμῖνhymin. . . ?

17ΖηλοῦσινZēlousin[Those people] are zealous for you ὑμᾶςhymas. . . , οὐou[but] not καλῶςkalōsin a good way . ἀλλὰallaInstead , ἐκκλεῖσαιekkleisaito isolate ὑμᾶςhymasyou [from us] , θέλουσινthelousinthey want ἵναhinaso that αὐτοὺςautousfor them . ζηλοῦτεzēlouteyou may be zealous

18καλὸνkalon[it is] good δὲdeNevertheless , ζηλοῦσθαιzēlousthaito be zealous ἐνenif it serves καλῷkalōa noble [purpose] — πάντοτεpantoteat any time , καὶkaiand μὴmēnot μόνονmonononly ἐνenwhen τῷtō- παρεῖναίpareinaivvv μεmeI am πρὸςproswith ὑμᾶςhymasyou .

19ΤεκνίαTekniaLittle children , μουmouMy οὓςhousfor whom πάλινpalinI am again ὠδίνωōdinōin the pains of childbirth ἄχριςachrisuntil οὗhou- μορφωθῇmorphōthēis formed ΧριστὸςChristosChrist ἐνenin ὑμῖνhyminyou ,

20ἤθελονēthelonI wish δὲde[how] παρεῖναιpareinaiI could be πρὸςproswith ὑμᾶςhymasyou ἄρτιartinow καὶkaiand ἀλλάξαιallaxaichange τὴνtēn- φωνήνphōnēntone , μουmoumy ὅτιhotibecause ἀποροῦμαιaporoumaiI am perplexed ἐνenabout ὑμῖνhyminyou .

21ΛέγετέLegeteTell μοιmoime , οἱhoi[you] who ὑπὸhypounder νόμονnomon[the] law , θέλοντεςthelonteswant εἶναιeinaito be τὸνtonthe νόμονnomonlaw [says] ? οὐκoukvvv ἀκούετεakouetedo you not understand [what]

22γέγραπταιgegraptaiit is written γὰρgarFor ὅτιhotithat ἈβραὰμAbraamAbraham δύοdyotwo υἱοὺςhuioussons , ἔσχενeschenhad ἕναhenaone ἐκekby τῆςtēsthe παιδίσκηςpaidiskēsslave woman καὶkaiand ἕναhena[the other] ἐκekby τῆςtēsthe ἐλευθέραςeleutherasfree [woman] .

23ἀλλ’all’- ὁhoHis [son] μὲνmen- ἐκekby τῆςtēsthe παιδίσκηςpaidiskēsslave woman κατὰkataaccording to σάρκαsarka[the] flesh , γεγέννηταιgegennētaiwas born ὁho[his son] δὲde[but] ἐκekby τῆςtēsthe ἐλευθέραςeleutherasfree [woman] δι’*di’[was born] through ἐπαγγελίαςepangeliaspromise .

24ἅτινάhatinaThese [things] ἐστινestinvvv ἀλληγορούμεναallēgoroumenaserve as illustrations , αὗταιhautai[the women] γάρgarfor εἰσιeisiare δύοdyotwo διαθῆκαιdiathēkaicovenants . μίαmiaOne [covenant] μὲνmen- ἀπὸapo[is] from ὄρουςorousMount ΣινᾶSinaSinai εἰςeisinto δουλείανdouleianslavery : γεννῶσαgennōsa[and bears] children ἥτιςhētisThis ἐστὶνestinis ἉγάρHagarHagar .

25τὸto- γὰρgarbecause ἉγὰρHagarHagar ΣινᾶSinaSinai ὄροςorosMount ἐστὶνestinstands for ἐνenin τῇtē- ἈραβίᾳArabiaArabia συστοιχεῖsystoicheicorresponds δὲdeand τῇtēto the νῦνnynpresent-day ἸερουσαλήμIerousalēmJerusalem , δουλεύειdouleueishe is in slavery δὲdeBut μετὰmetawith τῶνtōn- τέκνωνteknōnchildren . αὐτῆςautēsher

26ἡhēthe δὲdeBut ἄνωanōabove ἸερουσαλὴμIerousalēmJerusalem ἐλευθέραeleutherafree , ἐστίνestinis ἥτιςhētis[and she] ἐστίestiI have μήτηρmētērmother . πάντωνpantōnof everything . ἡμῶνhēmōnour

27γέγραπταιgegraptaiit is written γὰρgarFor ΕὐφράνθητιEuphranthēti“ Rejoice , στεῖραsteira[O] barren woman , ἡhēwho οὐouvvv τίκτουσαtiktousabears no children ; ῥῆξονrhēxonbreak forth καὶkaiand βόησονboēsoncry aloud , ἡhē[you] who οὐκouk{have} never ὠδίνουσαōdinousatravailed ; ὅτιhotibecause πολλὰpollavvv τὰta[are] the τέκναteknachildren τῆςtēsof the ἐρήμουerēmoudesolate woman μᾶλλονmallonmore ἢēthan τῆςtēsof her who ἐχούσηςechousēshas τὸνton- ἄνδραandraa husband .”

28ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe δὲdeBut ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , κατὰkataaccording to ἸσαὰκIsaakIsaac , ἐπαγγελίαςepangeliasof promise . τέκναteknachildren ἐσμὲνesmenwe are

29ἀλλ’all’however , ὥσπερhōspervvv τότεtoteAt that time , ὁhothe [son] κατὰkataby σάρκαsarka[the] flesh γεννηθεὶςgennētheisborn ἐδίωκεediokepersecuted τὸνtonthe [son born] κατὰkataby ΠνεῦμαPneuma[the] Spirit . οὕτωhoutōso καὶkai. . . νῦνnynnow .

30ἈλλὰAllaBut τίtiwhat λέγειlegeisay ? ἡhē{does} the γραφήgraphēScripture ἜκβαλεEkbale“ Expel τὴνtēnthe παιδίσκηνpaidiskēnslave woman καὶkaiand τὸνton- υἱὸνhuionson , αὐτῆςautēsher οὐouvvv μὴmēvvv γὰρgarfor κληρονομήσειklēronomēseiwill never share in the inheritance ὁhothe υἱὸςhuiosson τῆςtēsvvv παιδίσκηςpaidiskēsslave woman’s μετὰmetawith τοῦtouthe υἱοῦhuiouson .” τῆςtēsvvv ἐλευθέραςeleutherasfree [woman’s]

31ἄραarathen ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , οὐκouknot ἐσμὲνesmenwe are παιδίσκηςpaidiskēsof [the] slave woman , τέκναteknachildren ἀλλὰallabut τῆςtēsof the ἐλευθέραςeleutherasfree [woman] .
