1ΦοβηθῶμενPhobēthōmenlet us be careful οὖνounthen , μὴmē{do} not ποτεpote. . . καταλειπομένηςkataleipomenēsstill stands , ἐπαγγελίαςepangelias[ while ] the promise εἰσελθεῖνeiseltheinof entering εἰςeis. . . τὴνtēn- κατάπαυσινkatapausinrest αὐτοῦautouHis δοκῇdokēbe deemed τιςtis. . . ἐξexof ὑμῶνhymōnyou ὑστερηκέναιhysterēkenaito have fallen short [of it] .
2καὶkaialso γάρgarFor ἐσμενesmenwe εὐηγγελισμένοιeuēngelismenoireceived the good news καθάπερkathaperjust as κἀκεῖνοιkakeinoithey [did] ; ἀλλ’all’but οὐκoukvvv ὠφέλησενōphelēsenwas of no value ὁhothe λόγοςlogosmessage ἀκοῆςakoēsthey heard ἐκείνουςekeinousto them , μὴmēvvv συγκεκραμένουςsugkekramenoussince they did not share τῇtēthe πίστειpisteifaith τοῖςtoisof those who ἀκούσασινakousasincomprehended [it] .
3ΕἰσερχόμεθαEiserchomethaenter γὰρgarNow εἰςeis. . . τὴνtēn[that] κατάπαυσινkatapausinrest . οἱhoi[we] who πιστεύσαντεςpisteusanteshave believed καθὼςkathōs[As for the others, ] it is just as εἴρηκενeirēken[God] has said : ὩςHōs“ So ὤμοσαōmosaI swore on oath ἐνenin τῇtē- ὀργῇorgēanger , μουmouMy ΕἰEi‘ vvv εἰσελεύσονταιeiseleusontaiThey shall never enter εἰςeis. . . τὴνtēn- κατάπαυσίνkatapausinrest .’” μουmouMy ΚαίτοιKaitoiAnd yet τῶνtōn[His] ἔργωνergōnworks ἀπὸaposince καταβολῆςkatabolēs[the] foundation κόσμουkosmouof [the] world . γενηθέντωνgenēthentōnhave been finished
4εἴρηκεeirekehas said : γάρgarFor πουpousomewhere περὶperiabout τῆςtēsthe ἑβδόμηςhebdomēsseventh [day] οὕτωhoutōso ΚαὶKai“ And κατέπαυσενkatepausenrested ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod ἐνenon τῇtēthe ἡμέρᾳhēmeraday τῇtē- ἑβδόμῃhebdomēseventh ἀπὸapofrom πάντωνpantōnall τῶνtōn- ἔργωνergōnworks .” αὐτοῦautouHis
5καὶkaiAnd ἐνen[as He says] in τούτῳtoutō[the passage above] : πάλινpalinagain , ΕἰEivvv εἰσελεύσονταιeiseleusontai“ They shall never enter εἰςeis. . . τὴνtēn- κατάπαυσίνkatapausinrest . ” μουmouMy
6ἘπεὶEpeiSince , οὖνounthen , ἀπολείπεταιapoleipetaiit remains [for] τινὰςtinassome εἰσελθεῖνeiseltheinto enter εἰςeis. . . αὐτήνautēn[His rest] , καὶkaiand [since] οἱhoithose who πρότερονproteronformerly εὐαγγελισθέντεςeuangelisthentesheard the good news οὐκoukvvv εἰσῆλθονeisēlthondid not enter δι’di’because of ἀπείθειανapeitheian[their] disobedience ,
7πάλινpalinvvv τινὰtinaa certain ὁρίζειhorizei[God] again designated ἡμέρανhēmeranday [as] ΣήμερονSēmeron“ Today , ” ἐνenthrough ΔαυὶδDauidDavid λέγωνlegōnHe spoke μετὰmetalater τοσοῦτονtosoutonwhen a long χρόνονchronontime καθὼςkathōsas ΕἴρηταιEirētai“ It [also] says , ΣήμερονSēmeron“ Today , ἐὰνeanif τῆςtēs- φωνῆςphōnēsvoice , αὐτοῦautouHis ἀκούσητεakousēteyou hear μὴmē{do} not σκληρύνητεsklērynēteharden τὰςtas- καρδίαςkardiashearts .” ὑμῶνhymōnyour
8ΕἰEiif γὰρgarFor αὐτοὺςautous. . . , ἸησοῦςIēsousJoshua κατέπαυσενkatepausenhad given them rest οὐκoukvvv ἂνanvvv περὶperiabout ἄλληςallēsanother ἐλάλειelalei[God] would not have spoken μετὰmetalater ταῦταtauta. . . ἡμέραςhēmerasday .
9ἄραarathen , ἀπολείπεταιapoleipetaiThere remains , σαββατισμὸςsabbatismosa Sabbath rest τῷtōfor the λαῷlaōpeople τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God .
10ὁhowhoever γὰρgarFor εἰσελθὼνeiselthōnenters εἰςeis. . . τὴνtēn- κατάπαυσινkatapausinrest αὐτοῦautou[God’s] καὶkaialso αὐτὸςautos- κατέπαυσενkatepausenrests ἀπὸapofrom τῶνtōn[own] ἔργωνergōnwork , αὐτοῦautouhis ὥσπερhōsperjust as ἀπὸapofrom τῶνtōn[His] ἰδίωνidiōn. . . . ὁho- ΘεόςTheosGod [did]
11ΣπουδάσωμενSpoudasōmenLet us, therefore, make every effort οὖνoun. . . εἰσελθεῖνeiseltheinto enter εἰςeis. . . ἐκείνηνekeinēnthat τὴνtēn- κατάπαυσινkatapausinrest , ἵναhinaso that μὴmēno ἐνenby [following] τῷtōthe αὐτῷautōsame τιςtisone ὑποδείγματιhypodeigmatipattern πέσῃpesēwill fall τῆςtēs- ἀπειθείαςapeitheiasof disobedience .
12ΖῶνZōn[is] living γὰρgarFor ὁhothe λόγοςlogosword τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God καὶkaiand ἐνεργὴςenergēsactive . καὶkai- τομώτεροςtomōterosSharper ὑπὲρhyperthan πᾶσανpasanany μάχαιρανmachairansword , δίστομονdistomondouble-edged καὶkaieven διϊκνούμενοςdiiknoumenosit pierces ἄχριachrito μερισμοῦmerismoudividing ψυχῆςpsychēssoul τεte- καὶkaiand πνεύματοςpneumatosspirit , ἁρμῶνharmōnjoints τεte- καὶkaiand μυελῶνmyelōnmarrow . καὶkai- κριτικὸςkritikosIt judges ἐνθυμήσεωνenthymēseōn[the] thoughts καὶkaiand ἐννοιῶνennoiōnintentions καρδίαςkardiasof [the] heart .
13καὶkai- οὐκoukNothing ἐστίestiI have κτίσιςktisisin all creation ἀφανὴςaphanēshidden ἐνώπιονenōpionfrom [God’s] sight αὐτοῦautou. . . ; πάνταpantaeverything δὲde- γυμνὰgymna[is] uncovered καὶkaiand τετραχηλισμέναtetrachēlismenaexposed τοῖςtoisbefore the ὀφθαλμοῖςophthalmoiseyes αὐτοῦautouof Him πρὸςprosto ὃνhonwhom ἡμῖνhēminwe [must give] ὁho- λόγοςlogosaccount .
14ἜχοντεςEchontessince we have οὖνounTherefore , ἀρχιερέαarchiereahigh priest μέγανmegana great διεληλυθόταdielēlythotawho has passed through τοὺςtousthe οὐρανούςouranousheavens , ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus τὸνtonthe ΥἱὸνHuionSon τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , κρατῶμενkratōmenlet us hold firmly to τῆςtēswhat ὁμολογίαςhomologiaswe profess .
15οὐouvvv γὰρgarFor ἔχομενechomenwe do not have ἀρχιερέαarchiereaa high priest μὴmēvvv δυνάμενονdynamenonwho is unable συμπαθῆσαιsympathēsaito sympathize ταῖςtaiswith ἀσθενείαιςastheneiaisweaknesses , ἡμῶνhēmōnour πεπειρασμένονpepeirasmenonone who was tempted δὲdebut [we have] κατὰkatain πάνταpantaevery way καθ’kath’that ὁμοιότηταhomoiotēta[we are] , χωρὶςchōris[yet was] without ἁμαρτίαςhamartiassin .
16προσερχώμεθαproserchōmethaLet us then approach οὖνounvvv μετὰmetawith παρρησίαςparrēsiasconfidence , τῷtōthe θρόνῳthronōthrone τῆςtēs- χάριτοςcharitosof grace ἵναhinaso that λάβωμενlabōmenwe may receive ἐλεῶνeleōnshowing mercy , καὶkaiand χάρινcharingrace εὕρωμενheurōmenfind εἰςeisto εὔκαιρονeukaironin [our] time of need . βοήθειανboētheianhelp [us]
