1ὉHoThe πρεσβύτεροςpresbyteroselder , ἘκλεκτῇEklektēTo [the] chosen κυρίᾳkyrialady καὶkaiand τοῖςtois- τέκνοιςteknoischildren , αὐτῆςautēsher οὓςhouswhom ἐγὼegōI ἀγαπῶagapōlove ἐνenin ἀληθείᾳalētheia[the] truth — καὶkaiand οὐκouknot ἐγὼegōI μόνοςmonosalone , ἀλλὰallabut καὶkaialso πάντεςpantesall οἱhoiwho ἐγνωκότεςegnōkotesknow τὴνtēnthe ἀλήθειανalētheiantruth —
2διὰdiabecause of τὴνtēnthe ἀλήθειανalētheiantruth τὴνtēnthat μένουσανmenousanabides ἐνenin ἡμῖνhēminus καὶkaiand μεθ’meth’with ἡμῶνhēmōnus ἔσταιestaiwill be εἰςeisvvv τὸνtonvvv αἰῶναaiōnaforever :
3ἔσταιestaiwill be μεθ’meth’with ὑμῶνhymōnyour χάριςcharisGrace , ἔλεοςeleosmercy , εἰρήνηeirēnē[and] peace παρὰparafrom ΘεοῦTheouGod ΠατρόςPatros[the] Father καὶkaiand παρὰparafrom ΚυρίουKyriouof [the] Lord ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist , τοῦtouthe ΥἱοῦHuiouSon τοῦtouof the ΠατρόςPatrosFather , ἐνenin ἀληθείᾳalētheiatruth καὶkaiand ἀγάπῃagapēlove .
4ἘχάρηνEcharēnI was overjoyed λίανlian. . . ὅτιhotito εὕρηκαheurēkafind ἐκek[some] of τῶνtōn- τέκνωνteknōnchildren σουsouyour περιπατοῦνταςperipatountaswalking ἐνenin ἀληθείᾳalētheia[the] truth , καθὼςkathōsjust as ἐντολὴνentolēnhas commanded ἐλάβομενelabomen[us] . παρὰpara- τοῦtouthe ΠατρόςPatrosFather
5καὶkaiAnd νῦνnynnow ἐρωτῶerōtōI urge σεseyou , κυρίαkyria[dear] lady — οὐχouchnot ὡςhōsas ἐντολὴνentolēncommandment «γράφωνgraphōn- σοι»soito you , καινὴνkainēna new ἀλλὰallabut ἣνhēn[one] εἴχομεν*eichomenwe have had ἀπ’ap’from ἀρχῆςarchēs[the] beginning — ἵναhinathat ἀγαπῶμενagapōmenwe love ἀλλήλουςallēlousone another .
6καὶkaiAnd αὕτηhautēthis ἐστὶνestinis ἡhē- ἀγάπηagapēlove , ἵναhinathat περιπατῶμενperipatōmenwe walk κατὰkataaccording to τὰςtas- ἐντολὰςentolascommandments . αὐτοῦautouHis αὕτηhautēThis ἐστινestinis ἡhēthe ἐντολήentolēcommandment καθὼςkathōsvery ἠκούσατεēkousateyou have heard ἀπ’ap’from ἀρχῆςarchēs[the] beginning , ἵναhinathat ἐνenin αὐτῇautē[love] . περιπατῆτεperipatēteyou must walk
7ὍτιHotiFor πολλοὶpolloimany πλάνοιplanoideceivers εἰσελθὼνeiselthōnto enter εἰςeisinto τὸνtonthe κόσμονkosmonworld , οἱhoi- μὴmērefusing ὁμολογοῦντεςhomologountesto confess ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus ΧριστὸνChristonChrist ἐρχόμενονerchomenonthe coming of ἐνenin σαρκίsarki[the] flesh . οὗτόςhoutosAny such [ person ] ἐστινestinis ὁhothe πλάνοςplanosdeceiver καὶkaiand ὁhothe ἀντίχριστοςantichristosantichrist .
8βλέπετεblepeteWatch ἑαυτούςheautousyourselves , ἵναhinaso that μὴmēvvv ἀπολέσωμενapolesomenyou do not lose ἃhawhat εἰργασάμεθα*eirgasamethawe have worked for , ἀλλὰallabut [that] μισθὸνmisthon. . . . πλήρηplērē. . . ἀπολάβωμενapolabōmenwe might receive
9πᾶςpasAnyone ὁhowho παραβαίνωνparavainontransgress καὶkai- μὴmēwithout μένωνmenōnremaining ἐνenin τῇtēthe διδαχῇdidachēteaching τοῦtou- ΧριστοῦChristouof Christ ΘεὸνTheonGod . οὐκoukvvv ἔχειecheidoes not have ὁhoWhoever μένωνmenōnremains ἐνenin τῇtē[His] διδαχῇdidachēteaching τοῦtou- ΧριστοῦChristouof Christ οὗτοςhoutos- καὶkaiboth τὸνtonthe ΠατέραPateraFather καὶkaiand τὸνtonthe ΥἱὸνHuionSon . ἔχειecheihas
10ΕἴEiIf τιςtisanyone ἔρχεταιerchetaicomes πρὸςprosto ὑμᾶςhymasyou καὶkai[but] ταύτηνtautēnthis τὴνtēn- διδαχὴνdidachēnteaching , οὐouvvv φέρειphereidoes not bring μὴmē{do} not λαμβάνετεlambanetereceive αὐτὸνautonhim εἰςeisinto οἰκίανoikian[your] home καὶkaieven χαίρεινchairein. . . αὐτῷautōhim . μὴmē[or] λέγετεlegetegreet
11ὁhoWhoever γὰρgar- λέγωνlegōngreets αὐτῷautō[such a person] χαίρεινchairein. . . κοινωνεῖkoinōneishares τοῖςtoisin ἔργοιςergoisdeeds . αὐτοῦautouhis τοῖςtois- πονηροῖςponēroisevil
12ΠολλὰPollamany things ἔχωνechōnI have ὑμῖνhyminto you , γράφεινgrapheinto write οὐκouknot [to do so] ἐβουλήθηνeboulēthēn[but] I would prefer διὰdiawith χάρτουchartoupaper καὶkaiand μέλανοςmelanosink . ἀλλὰallaInstead , ἐλπίζωelpizōI hope ἐλθεῖνeltheinto come πρὸςproswith ὑμᾶςhymasyou καὶkaiand στόμαstoma[face] πρὸςprosto στόμαstoma[face] , λαλῆσαιlalēsaispeak ἵναhinaso that ἡhē- χαρὰcharajoy ἡμῶνhēmōnour ἡhē- πεπληρωμένηpeplērōmenēcomplete .
