4καὶkai- πάντεςpantesThey all τὸtothe αὐτὸautosame πόμαpomadrink ; πνευματικὸνpneumatikonspiritual ἔπιονepiondrank ἔπινονepinonthey drank γὰρgarfor ἐκekfrom πνευματικῆςpneumatikēs[the] spiritual ἀκολουθούσηςakolouthousēsthat accompanied them , πέτραςpetrasrock ἡhē[that] δὲdeand πέτραpetrarock ἦνēnwas ὁho- ΧριστόςChristosChrist .

5ἀλλ’all’Nevertheless , οὐκoukvvv ἐνenwith τοῖςtois- πλείοσινpleiosinmost αὐτῶνautōnof them , εὐδόκησενeudokēsenwas not pleased ὁho- ΘεόςTheosGod κατεστρώθησανkatestrōthēsanthey were struck down γὰρgarfor ἐνenin τῇtēthe ἐρήμῳerēmōwilderness .

6ΤαῦταTautaThese things δὲde- τύποιtypoias examples ἡμῶνhēmōn- ἐγενήθησανegenēthēsantook place εἰςeisto keep τὸtovvv μὴmēvvv εἶναιeinaivvv ἡμᾶςhēmasus ἐπιθυμητὰςepithymētasfrom craving κακῶνkakōnevil things καθὼςkathōsas κἀκεῖνοιkakeinoithey ἐπεθύμησανepethymēsan[did] .

7μηδὲmēdevvv εἰδωλολάτραιeidōlolatraiidolaters , γίνεσθεginestheDo not be καθώςkathōsas τινεςtinessome αὐτῶνautōnof them [were] . ὃςhos[He] γέγραπταιgegraptaiit is written : ἘκάθισενEkathisensat down ὁho“ The λαὸςlaospeople φαγεῖνphageinto eat καὶkaiand πιεῖνpieindrink καὶkaiand ἀνέστησανanestēsangot up παίζεινpaizeinto indulge in revelry .”

8μηδὲmēdevvv πορνεύωμενporneuōmenWe should not commit sexual immorality , καθώςkathōsas τινεςtinessome αὐτῶνautōnof them ἐπόρνευσανeporneusan[did] , καὶkaiand ἔπεσονepesonthey fell ἐνenin μιᾷmiain one ἡμέρᾳhēmeraday εἰκοσιτρεῖςeikositreistwenty χιλιάδεςchiliadesthousand [of them]

9μηδὲmēde- ἐκπειράζωμενekpeirazōmenWe should not test τὸνton- Χριστόν*ChristonChrist , καθώςkathōsas καὶkaiand τινεςtinessome αὐτῶνautōnof them ἐπείρασανepeirasan[did] , καὶkaiand ὑπὸhypoby τῶνtōn- ὄφεωνopheōnsnakes . ἀπώλοντοapōlontowere killed

10μηδὲmēdevvv γογγύζετεgongyzeteAnd do not complain , καθώςkathōsas καὶkaiand τινεςtinessome αὐτῶνautōnof them ἐγόγγυσανegongysan[did] , καὶkaiand ἀπώλοντοapōlontowere killed ὑπὸhypoby τοῦtouthe ὀλοθρευτοῦolothreutoudestroying angel .

11ΤαῦταTautathese things δὲdeNow ΠάνταPanta“ Everything τύποιtypoias examples συνέβαινονsunebainonhappened ἐκείνοιςekeinoisto them ἐγράφηegraphēwere written down δὲdeand πρὸςprosfor νουθεσίανnouthesianas warnings ἡμῶνhēmōnus , εἰςeison οὓςhouswhom τὰtathe τέληtelēfulfillment τῶνtōnof the αἰώνωνaiōnōnages ΚατήντησενKatēntēsen[Paul] came

12ὭστεHōsteSo ὁhothe [one who] δοκῶνdokōnthinks ἑστάναιhestanaihe is standing firm βλεπέτωblepetōshould be careful μὴmēnot πέσῃpesēto fall .

13πειρασμὸςpeirasmostemptation ὑμᾶςhymasyou οὐκoukNo εἴληφενeilēphenhas seized εἰeiexcept μὴmē. . . ἀνθρώπινοςanthrōpinoswhat is common to man . πιστὸςpistos[is] faithful ; δὲdeAnd ὁho- ΘεόςTheosGod ὃςhos[He] οὐκoukvvv ἐάσειeaseiwill not let ὑμᾶςhymasyou πειρασθῆναιpeirasthēnaibe tempted ὑπὲρhyperbeyond ὃhowhat δύνασθεdynastheyou can bear . ἀλλὰallaBut ποιήσειpoiēseiHe will also provide σὺνsynwhen τῷtō- πειρασμῷpeirasmō[you are] tempted , καὶkai. . . τὴνtēn- ἔκβασινekbasinan escape , τοῦtou- δύνασθαιdynasthaiso that you can ὑμᾶςhymasyou ὑπενεγκεῖνhypenenkeinstand up under [it] .

14ΔιόπερDioperTherefore , ἀγαπητοίagapētoibeloved , μουmoumy φεύγετεpheugeteflee ἀπὸapofrom τῆςtēs- εἰδωλολατρίαςeidōlolatriasidolatry .

15ὡςhōs. . . φρονίμοιςphronimoisto reasonable [people] ; λέγωlegōI speak κρίνατεkrinatejudge ὑμεῖςhymeisfor yourselves ὅhowhat φημιphēmiI say .

18βλέπετεblepeteConsider τὸνton- ἸσραὴλIsraēlof Israel : κατὰkatavvv σάρκαsarkathe people οὐχὶouchinot οἱhoi[we who are] ἐσθίοντεςesthionteseat τὰςtasthe θυσίαςthysiassacrifices κοινωνοὶkoinōnoifellow partakers τοῦtouin the θυσιαστηρίουthysiastērioualtar ? εἰσί;eisiare

19ΤίTi- οὖνounthen , φημιphēmiAm I suggesting , ὅτιhotithat εἴδωλόνeidōlonan idol τίtianything ? ἐστινestinis ἢēor ὅτιhotithat εἰδωλόθυτόνeidōlothytonfood sacrificed to an idol τίtianything , ἐστινestinis

20ἀλλ’all’No , ὅτιhoti[but] ἃha[the] θύειthueito offer a sacrifice τὰta- ἔθνηethnēof pagans δαιμονίοιςdaimonioisto demons , θύειthueito offer a sacrifice καὶkai- οὐounot ΘεῷTheōto God . οὐounot θέλωthelōI do not want δὲdeAnd ὑμᾶςhymasyou κοινωνοὺςkoinōnousparticipants τῶνtōn- δαιμονίωνdaimoniōnwith demons . γίνεσθεginestheDo not become a stumbling block

21οὗhouthat for which δύνασθεdynastheyou cannot ποτήριονpotērion[the] cup ΚυρίουKyriouof [the] Lord πίνεινpineindrink καὶkaiand ποτήριονpotērion[the] cup δαιμονίωνdaimoniōnof demons [too] ; οὐouvvv δύνασθεdynastheyou cannot τραπέζηςtrapezēsin [the] table ΚυρίουKyriouof [the] Lord μετέχεινmetecheinpartake καὶkaiand τραπέζηςtrapezēs[the] table δαιμονίωνdaimoniōnof demons {too} .

22ἢē- παραζηλοῦμενparazēloumenAre we trying to provoke τὸνtonthe ΚύριονKyrionLord {to jealousy} ? μὴmē. . . ἰσχυρότεροιischyroteroistronger αὐτοῦautouthan He ? ἐσμενesmenAre we

23ΠάνταPanta“ Everything μοιmoifor me . ἔξεστινexestinis permissible , ” ἀλλ’all’but οὐounot πάνταpantaeverything συμφέρειsymphereiis beneficial . ΠάνταPanta“ Everything μοιmoifor me . ἔξεστινexestinis permissible , ” ἀλλ’all’but οὐounot πάνταpantaeverything οἰκοδομεῖoikodomeiis edifying .

25ΠᾶνPananything τὸto- ἐνenin μακέλλῳmakellō[the] meat market πωλούμενονpōloumenonsold ἐσθίετεesthieteEat μηδὲνmēdenwithout ἀνακρίνοντεςanakrinontesraising questions διὰdiaof τὴνtēn- συνείδησινsyneidēsinconscience ,

26ΤοῦTou[is] the γὰρgarfor , ΚυρίουKyriouLord’s , ἩHē“ The γῆgēearth καὶkaiand τὸtothe πλήρωμαplērōmafullness αὐτῆςautēsthereof .”

27ΕἴEiIf δέdeBut τιςtissomeone καλεῖkaleiinvites ὑμᾶςhymasyou {to a meal} τῶνtōn- ἀπίστωνapistōnunbeliever καὶkaiand θέλετεtheleteyou want πορεύεσθαιporeuesthaito go , πᾶνpananything τὸto- παρατιθέμενονparatithemenonset before ὑμῖνhyminyou ἐσθίετεesthieteeat μηδὲνmēdenwithout ἀνακρίνοντεςanakrinontesraising questions διὰdiaof τὴνtēn- συνείδησινsyneidēsinconscience .

28ἐὰνeanif δέdeBut τιςtissomeone ὑμῖνhyminyou , εἴπῃeipētells ΤοῦτοTouto“ This [food] εἰδωλόθυτόνeidōlothytonfood sacrificed to an idol ἐστίestiI have μὴmē. . . ἐσθίετεesthieteEat δι’di’for the sake of ἐκεῖνονekeinonthe one τὸνtonwho μηνύσανταmēnysantatold [you] καὶkaiand τὴνtēn- συνείδησινsyneidēsinfor the sake of conscience — τοῦtouthe γὰρgarFor ΚυρίουKyriouLord’s , ἩHē“ The γῆgēearth καὶkaiand τὸtothe πλήρωμαplērōmafullness αὐτῆςautēsthereof .”

29συνείδησινsyneidēsinconscience , δέdeBut λέγωlegōI mean , οὐχὶouchinot τὴνtēn- ἑαυτοῦheautouyour own ἀλλὰalla- τὴνtēn[ conscience ] , τοῦtouthe ἑτέρουheterouother [one’s] ἱνατίinatiWhy γὰρgarFor ἡhē- ἐλευθερίαeleutheriafreedom μουmou{should} my κρίνεταιkrinetaibe determined ὑπὸhypoby ἄλληςallēssomeone else’s συνειδήσεωςsyneidēseōsconscience ?

30εἰeiIf ἐγὼegōI χάριτιcharitiwith thankfulness , μετέχωmetechōpartake [in the meal] τίtiwhy βλασφημοῦμαιblasphēmoumaiam I denounced ὑπὲρhyperbecause of οὗhouthat for which ἐγὼegōI εὐχαριστῶeucharistōgive thanks ?

31ΕἴτεEitewhether οὖνounSo ἐσθίετεesthieteyou eat εἴτεeiteor πίνετεpinetedrink εἴτεeiteor τιtiwhatever ποιεῖτεpoieiteyou do , πάνταpantait all εἰςeisto the δόξανdoxanglory ΘεοῦTheouof God . ποιεῖτεpoieitedo

32ἀπρόσκοποιaproskopoi. . . , γίνεσθεginestheDo not become a stumbling block καὶkaiwhether ἸουδαίοιςIoudaioisto Jews καὶkai[or] Ἕλλησιellesito Greeks καὶkai[or] τῇtēthe ἐκκλησίᾳekklēsiachurch τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God —

33καθὼςkathōsas κἀγὼkagōI also πάνταpantaeveryone πᾶσινpasinin all [I do] . ἀρέσκωareskō[try to] please μὴmēvvv ζητῶνzētōn[For] I am not seeking τὸto- ἐμαυτοῦemautoumy [own] συμφέρονsympheroncommon good . ἀλλὰallabut τὸto[the good] τῶνtōn- πολλῶνpollōnof many , ἵναhinathat σωθῶσι.sothosi[and] be saved .
