2ἙκατοντάρχουHekatontarchouof a centurion δὲdeWhen τινοςtinosa δοῦλοςdoulosservant κακῶςkakōssick ἔχωνechōnwas ἤμελλεemelleHe was about τελευτᾶνteleutanto die . ὃςhosvvv ἦνēnvvv αὐτῷautōvvv ἔντιμοςentimoshighly valued
3ἀκούσαςakousas[the centurion] heard δὲdeWhen περὶperiabout τοῦtou- ἸησοῦIēsouJesus , ἀπέστειλεapesteileHe sent them out πρὸςpros- αὐτὸνauton- πρεσβυτέρουςpresbyterouselders τῶνtōn[some] ἸουδαίωνIoudaiōnJewish ἐρωτῶνerōtōnto ask αὐτὸνautonHim ὅπωςhopōs- ἐλθὼνelthōnto come διασώσῃdiasōsē[and] heal τὸνton- δοῦλονdoulonservant . αὐτοῦautouhis
4οἱhoi- δὲde- παραγενόμενοιparagenomenoiThey came πρὸςprosto τὸνton- ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus παρεκάλουνparekaloun[and] pleaded with αὐτὸνautonHim σπουδαίωςspoudaiōsearnestly λέγοντεςlegontes- ὅτιhoti- , ἌξιόςAxiosworthy ἐστινestin“ [This man] is - , παρέξειparexeito have You grant τοῦτοtoutothis

9ἈκούσαςAkousas[Jesus] heard δὲde[When] ταῦταtauta[this] , hovvv ἸησοῦςIēsous[He] ἐθαύμασενethaumasenmarveled at αὐτόνauton[the centurion] . καὶkai- στραφεὶςstrapheisTurning τῷto the ἀκολουθοῦντιakolouthountifollowing αὐτῷautōHim , ὄχλῳochlōcrowd εἰπὲeipesay λέγωlegōI tell ὑμῖνhyminyou , οὐδὲoudenot even ἐνenin τῷ- ἸσραὴλIsraēlIsrael τοσαύτηνtosautēnsuch great πίστινpistinfaith . ” εὗρονheuronhave I found καὶkaiAnd [when] ὑποστρέψαντεςhypostrepsantesreturned
10οἱhoithe πεμφθέντεςpemphthentesmessengers εἰςeisto τὸνtonthe οἶκονoikonhouse , εὗρονheuronthey found τὸνtonthe ἀσθενοῦνταasthenountaill δοῦλονdoulonservant ὑγιαίνονταhygiainontain good health .
11ΚαὶKai- ἐγένετοegenetoSoon afterward ἐνen. . . τῷ. . . ἑξῆςhexēs. . . , ἐπορεύετοeporeuetowent εἰςeisto πόλινpolina town καλουμένηνkaloumenēncalled ΝαΐνNainNain . καὶkai- συνεπορεύοντοsyneporeuontowent with αὐτῷautōHim , οἱhoi- μαθηταὶmathētaidisciples αὐτοῦautouHis ἱκανοὶikanoigreat καὶkai- ὄχλοςochloscrowd . πολύςpolysa large
12ὡςhōsAs δὲde- ἤγγισεeggiseHe approached τῇthe πύλῃpylēgate , τῆςtēs- πόλεωςpoleōstown καὶkai- ἰδοὺidouHe saw ἐξεκομίζετοexekomizetobeing carried out , τεθνηκὼςtethnēkōsa dead man υἱὸςhuiosson μονογενὴςmonogenēsthe only τῇof μητρὶmētrimother , αὐτοῦautouhis καὶkaiand αὐτὴautēshe ἦνēnwas χήραchēraa widow . καὶkaiAnd ὄχλοςochloscrowd τῆςtēsfrom the πόλεωςpoleōstown ἱκανὸςhikanosa large ἦνēnwas σὺνsynwith αὐτῇautēher .
13καὶkaiWhen ἰδὼνidōnsaw αὐτὴνautēnher , hothe ΚύριοςKyriosLord ἐσπλαγχνίσθηesplanchnisthēHe had compassion ἐπ’ep’on αὐτῇautēher καὶkaiand εἶπενeipensaid αὐτῇautē- , Μὴ“ {Do} not κλαῖεklaieweep . ”
14ΚαὶKaiThen προσελθὼνproselthōnHe went up ἥψατοhēpsato[and] touched τῆςtēsthe σοροῦsoroucoffin , οἱhoithose δὲdeand βαστάζοντεςbastazontescarrying it ἔστησανestēsanstood still . καὶkai- εἰπὲeipesay ΝεανίσκεNeaniske“ Young man , ” σοὶsoiyou , λέγωlegō“ I tell ἐγέρθητιegerthētiget up ! ”
15καὶkaiAnd ἀνεκάθισενanekathisensat up hothe νεκρὸςnekrosdead [man] καὶkaiand ἤρξατοērxatobegan λαλεῖνlaleinto speak ! καὶkaiThen ἔδωκενedōken[Jesus] gave αὐτὸνautonhim {back} τῇto μητρὶmētrimother . αὐτοῦautouhis
16ἔλαβεelabeswept over δὲde- φόβοςphobosA sense of awe πάνταςpantasall [of them] , καὶkaiand ἐδόξαζονedoxazonthey glorified τὸνton- ΘεὸνTheonGod . λέγοντεςlegontesthey said ὅτιhoti- . ΠροφήτηςProphētēsprophet μέγαςmegas“ A great ἠγήγερταιegegertaihad risen ἐνenamong ἡμῖνhēminus ! ” καὶkai- ὅτιhoti- ἘπεσκέψατοEpeskepsatohas visited ho“ - ΘεὸςTheosGod τὸνton- λαὸνlaonpeople ! ” αὐτοῦautouHis
17καὶkaiAnd ἐξῆλθενexēlthenspread ho- λόγοςlogosnews οὗτοςhoutos[the] ἐνenthroughout ὅλῃholē. . . τῇ- ἸουδαίᾳIoudaiaJudea περὶperiabout αὐτοῦautou[Jesus] καὶkaiAnd ἐνenthroughout πάσῃpasēall τῇthe περιχώρῳperichōrōsurrounding region .
18ΚαὶKaiThen ἀπήγγειλανapēngeilaninformed ἸωάννῃIōannē[him] οἱhoi- μαθηταὶmathētaidisciples αὐτοῦautou[John’s] περὶperiabout πάντωνpantōnall τούτωνtoutōnthese things .
19καὶkaiSo προσκαλεσάμενοςproskalesamenoscalled δύοdyotwo τινὰςtinasvvv τῶνtōnof μαθητῶνmathētōndisciples αὐτοῦautouhis ho- ἸωάννηςIōannēsJohn ἔπεμψεepempsesent πρὸςprosto τὸνtonthe ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus λέγωνlegōnwith the message ΣὺSyYou εἶei“ Are hothe ἐρχόμενοςerchomenosOne who was to come , ēor ἕτερονheteronSome προσδοκῶμενprosdokōmenshould we look for
20ΠαραγενόμενοιParagenomenoicame δὲde[When] πρὸςprosto αὐτὸνauton[Jesus] , οἱhoithe ἄνδρεςandresmen εἰπὼνeipōnHe said ἸωάννηςIōannēs“ John hothe ΒαπτιστὴςBaptistēsBaptist ἀπέστειλενapesteilensent ἡμᾶςhēmasus πρὸςprosto σὲse- , λέγωνlegōnask ΣὺSyYou εἶei‘ Are hothe ἐρχόμενοςerchomenosOne who was to come , ēor ἕτερονheteronSome προσδοκῶμενprosdokōmenshould we look for ἘνEnAt
21αὐτῇautē- , δὲdeand τῇto ὥρᾳhōrahour ἐθεράπευσεetherapeuse[Jesus] healed πολλοὺςpollousmany [people] ἀπὸapoof νόσωνnosōn[their] diseases , καὶkai- μαστίγωνmastigōnafflictions , καὶkaiand πνευμάτωνpneumatōnspirits , πονηρῶνponērōnevil καὶkaiand τυφλοῖςtyphloisblind . πολλοῖςpolloisto many [who were] ἐχαρίσατοecharisatoHe gave τὸto. . . βλέπεινblepeinsight καὶkaiand ἀποκριθεὶςapokritheisHe replied
22hothe ἸησοῦςIēsous[He] εἶπενeipenHe said , αὐτοῖςautoisthem . ΠορευθέντεςPoreuthentes“ Go [back] ἀπαγγείλατεapangeilate[and] report ἸωάννῃIōannēto John hawhat εἴδετεeideteyou have seen καὶkaiand ἠκούσατεēkousateheard : τυφλοὶtyphloi[The] blind ἀναβλέπουσιanablepousireceive sight , καὶkaiand χωλοὶchōloi[the] lame περιπατοῦσι,peripatousiwalk , λεπροὶleproi[the] lepers καθαρίζονταιkatharizontaiare cleansed , κωφοὶkōphoi[the] deaf ἀκούουσι,akouousiwill listen , νεκροὶnekroi[the] dead ἐγείρονταιegeirontaiare raised , πτωχοὶptōchoi[to the] poor . εὐαγγελίζονταιeuangelizontai[and the] good news is preached
23καὶkai- μακάριόςmakariosBlessed ἐστινestinis ὃςhosthe [one who] ἐὰνean. . . μὴ. . . σκανδαλισθῇskandalisthēdoes not fall away ἐνenon account of ἐμοίemoiMe . ”
24ἈπελθόντωνApelthontōnhad left , δὲdeAfter τῶνtōn- μαθητῶνmathētōndisciples ἸωάννουIōannouJohn’s ἤρξατοērxato[Jesus] began λέγεινlegeinto speak πρὸςprosto τοὺςtousthe ὄχλουςochlouscrowds περὶperiabout ἸωάννουIōannouJohn : ΤίTi“ What ἐξεληλύθατεexeleluthatedid you go out εἰςeisinto τὴνtēnthe ἔρημονerēmonwilderness θεάσασθαιtheasasthaito see ? κάλαμονkalamonA reed ὑπὸhypoin ἀνέμουanemou[the] wind ? σαλευόμενονsaleuomenonswaying
25ἀλλὰallaOtherwise , τίtiwhat ἐξεληλύθατεexeleluthatedid you go out ἰδεῖνideinto see ? ἄνθρωπονanthrōponA man ἐνenin μαλακοῖςmalakoisfine ἱματίοιςhimatioisclothes ? ἠμφιεσμένονēmphiesmenondressed ἰδοὺidouLook , οἱhoithose who ἐνen[wear] ἱματισμῷhimatismōclothing ἐνδόξῳendoxōelegant καὶkaiand τρυφῇtryphēin luxury ὑπάρχοντεςhyparchonteslive ἐνenin τοῖςtois- βασιλείοιςbasileioispalaces . εἰσίνeisinare found
26ἈλλὰAllathen τίtiWhat ἐξεληλύθατεexeleluthatedid you go out ἰδεῖνideinto see ? προφήτηνprophētēnA prophet ? ναίnaiYes , λέγωlegōI tell ὑμῖνhyminyou , καὶkaiand περισσότερονperissoteronmore προφήτουprophētouthan a prophet .
27οὗτόςhoutosThis ἐστιestiis περὶperiabout οὗhouwhom γέγραπταιgegraptaiit is written : ἸδοὺIdou‘ Behold , ἐγὼegōI ἀποστέλλωapostellōI will send τὸνton- ἄγγελόνangelonmessenger μουmouMy πρὸproahead of You προσώπουprosōpou. . . , σουsou. . . ὋςHoswho κατασκευάσειkataskeuaseiwill prepare τὴνtēn- ὁδόνhodonway σουsouYou .’ ἔμπροσθένemprosthenbefore σουsouYou .’ ΛέγωLegōI tell
28γὰρgarFor ὑμῖνhyminfor you , μείζωνmeizōngreater ἐνenin γεννητοῖςgennētois[those] born γυναικῶνgynaikōnof women προφήτηςprophētēsa prophet , ἸωάννουIōannouof John . τοῦtou- βαπτιστοῦbaptistou[For] they had received the baptism οὐδείςoudeisno one ἐστινestinthere is hothe δὲdeyet even μικρότεροςmikroterosleast ἐνenin τῇthe βασιλείᾳbasileiakingdom τοῦtouof ΘεοῦTheouGod μείζωνmeizōngreater αὐτοῦautouthan he . ” ἐστι.estiis
29ΚαὶKai- πᾶςpasAll hothe λαὸςlaospeople ἀκούσαςakousas[who] heard [this] , καὶkaieven οἱhoithe τελῶναιtelōnaitax collectors , ἐδικαίωσανedikaiōsanacknowledged God’s justice τὸνton. . . ΘεόνTheon. . . . βαπτισθέντεςbaptisthentes[For] they had received the baptism τὸto. . . βάπτισμαbaptisma. . . ἸωάννουIōannouof John .
30οἱhoithe δὲdeBut ΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioiPharisees καὶkaiand οἱhoi- νομικοὶnomikoiexperts in the law τὴνtēn- βουλὴνboulēnpurpose τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod’s ἠθέτησανēthetēsanrejected εἰςeisfor ἑαυτούςheautousthemselves , μὴ[because] {they had} not βαπτισθέντεςbaptisthentesbeen baptized ὑπ’hyp’by αὐτοῦautou[John] .
31ΤίνιTini“ To what , οὖνounthen , ὁμοιώσωhomoiōsōcan I compare τοὺςtousthe ἀνθρώπουςanthrōpousmen τῆςtēs- γενεᾶςgeneasgeneration ? ταύτηςtautēsof this καὶkai- τίνιtiniWhat εἰσὶνeisinare they ὅμοιοιhomoioilike ?
32ὅμοιοιhomoioilike ? εἰσιeisiare παιδίοιςpaidioischildren τοῖςtois- ἐνenin ἀγορᾷagora[the] marketplace καθημένοιςkathēmenoissitting καὶkaiand προσφωνοῦσινprosphōnousincalling out ἀλλήλοιςallēloisto one another καὶkaiand λέγουσινlegousinsay ΗὐλήσαμενĒulēsamen‘ We played the flute ὑμῖνhyminfor you , καὶkaiand οὐκoukvvv ὠρχήσασθεōrchēsastheyou did not dance ; ἘθρηνήσαμενEthrēnēsamenwe sang a dirge , ὑμῖνhyminfor you , καὶkaiand οὐκoukvvv ἐκλαύσατεeklausateyou did not weep . ’
33ἐλήλυθεeleluthecame γὰρgarFor ἸωάννηςIōannēsJohn hothe ΒαπτιστὴςBaptistēsBaptist μήτεmētenor ἄρτονartonbread ἐσθίωνesthiōneating μήτεmētenor οἶνονoinonwine , πίνωνpinōndrinking καὶkaiand λέγετεlegeteyou say , ΔαιμόνιονDaimoniona demon ! ’ ἔχειechei‘ He has
34ἐλήλυθενelēlythencame hoThe ΥἱὸςHuiosSon τοῦtou- ἀνθρώπουanthrōpouof Man ἐσθίωνesthiōneating καὶkaiand πίνωνpinōndrinking , καὶkaiand λέγετεlegeteyou say , ἸδοὺIdou‘ Look ἄνθρωποςanthrōpos[at this] φάγοςphagosglutton καὶkaiand οἰνοπότηςoinopotēsdrunkard , φίλοςphilosa friend τελωνῶνtelōnōnof tax collectors καὶkaiand ἁμαρτωλῶνhamartōlōnsinners ! ’
35καὶkaiBut ἐδικαιώθηedikaiōthēis vindicated - σοφίαsophiawisdom ἀπὸapoby τῶνtōn- τέκνωνteknōnchildren . ” αὐτῆςautēsher πάντωνpantōnall
36ἨρώταĒrōtainvited δέdeThen τιςtisone αὐτὸνauton[Jesus] τῶνtōnof the ΦαρισαίωνPharisaiōnPharisees ἵναhinato φάγῃphagēeat μετ’met’with αὐτοῦautouhim , καὶkaiand εἰσελθὼνeiselthōnHe entered εἰςeis. . . τὴνtēn- οἰκίανoikianhouse , τοῦtouvvv ΦαρισαίουPharisaiouvvv ἀνεκλίθη.aneklithe[and] reclined at the table .
37καὶkai[As] ἰδοὺidou. . . γυνὴgynēwoman ἐνenfrom τῇ[that] πόλειpoleitown ἥτιςhētisvvv ἦνēnvvv ἁμαρτωλόςhamartōlosa sinful καὶkaiWhen ἐπιγνοῦσαepignousalearned ὅτιhotithat ἀνάκειταιanakeitai[Jesus] was dining ἐνenvvv τῇvvv οἰκίᾳoikia[there] , τοῦtouvvv ΦαρισαίουPharisaiouvvv κομίσασαkomisasashe brought ἀλάβαστρονalabastronan alabaster jar μύρουmyrouof perfume .
38καὶkai[As] στᾶσαstasashe stood ὀπίσωopisōbehind Him παρὰparaat τοὺςtous- πόδαςpodasfeet αὐτοῦautouHis κλαίουσαklaiousaweeping , ἤρξατοērxatoshe began βρέχεινbrecheinto wet τοὺςtouswith πόδαςpodasfeet αὐτοῦautouHis τοῖςtois[her] δάκρυσιdakrusitears καὶkaiand ταῖςtaiswith θριξὶthrixiher hair τῆςtēs. . . κεφαλῆςkephalēs. . . . αὐτῆςautēs. . . ἐξέμασσε,exemassewipe [them] καὶkaiThen κατεφίλειkatephileishe kissed τοὺςtous- πόδαςpodasfeet αὐτοῦautouHis καὶkaiThen ἤλειφεeleipheanointed [them] τῷwith the μύρῳmyrōperfume .
39ἸδὼνIdōnsaw [this] , δὲdeWhen hothe ΦαρισαῖοςPharisaiosPharisee howho καλέσαςkalesashad invited αὐτὸνauton[Jesus] εἶπενeipenhe said ἐνento ἑαυτῷheautōhimself λέγωνlegōn- , ΟὗτοςHoutosthis [man] εἰei“ If ἦνēnwere προφήτηςprophētēsa prophet , ἐγίνωσκενeginōskenHe would know ἂνan- τίςtiswho [this is] καὶkaiand ποταπὴpotapēwhat kind of γυνὴgynēwoman ἥτιςhētis- ἅπτεταιhaptetaiis touching αὐτοῦautouHim — ὅτιhotifor ἁμαρτωλόςhamartōlosa sinner ! ” ἐστι.estiis
40ΚαὶKaiBut ἀποκριθεὶςapokritheisanswered ho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus εἰπέeipe“ Tell [me] , πρὸςpros. . . αὐτόνautonhim , ΣίμωνSimōn“ Simon , ἔχωechōI have σοίsoiyou . ” τιtisomething εἰπεῖνeipeinto tell Ho- δέde- φησί·phesihe said . ΔιδάσκαλεDidaskaleTeacher , ” εἰπέeipe“ Tell [me] ,
41ΔύοDyo“ Two [men] χρεοφειλέταιchreopheiletaidebtors ἦσανēsanwere δανειστῇdaneisteto a certain moneylender . τινιtinivvv ho- εἷςheisOne ὤφειλεopheileowed [him] δηνάριαdēnariadenarii , πεντακόσιαpentakosiafive hundred hothe δὲdeand ἕτεροςheterosother πεντήκονταpentēkontafifty . μὴ. . .
42ἐχόντωνechontōnwere unable δὲdeand αὐτῶνautōn[When] they ἀποδοῦναιapodounaito repay [him] , ἀμφοτέροιςamphoteroisboth [of them] . ἐχαρίσατοecharisatohe forgave τίςtisWhich οὖνounthen , αὐτῶνautōn[one] , εἰπέeipe“ Tell [me] , πλεῖονpleionmore ? ” ἀγαπήσειagapēseiwill love αὐτόνautonhim ἈποκριθεὶςApokritheisreplied δὲde-
43Ho- ΣίμωνSimōnSimon εἶπενeipen. . . . ὙπολαμβάνωHypolambanō“ I suppose ὅτιhoti- the [one who] τὸto- πλεῖονpleionmore , ” ἐχαρίσατοecharisatowas forgiven the [one who] δὲde- εἶπενeipen[Jesus] said αὐτῷautō- . ὈρθῶςOrthōscorrectly , ” ἔκριναςekrinas“ You have judged
44ΚαὶKaiAnd στραφεὶςstrapheisturning πρὸςprostoward τὴνtēnthe γυναῖκαgynaikawoman , τῷ- ΣίμωνιSimōnito Simon , ἔφηephēHe said ΒλέπειςBlepeis“ Do you see ταύτηνtautēnthis τὴνtēn- γυναῖκαgynaikawoman ? εἰσῆλθόνeisēlthon[When] I entered σουsouyour εἰςeis. . . τὴνtēn- οἰκίανoikianhouse , ὕδωρhydōrwater ἐπὶepifor τοὺςtous- πόδαςpodasfeet μουmouMy οὐκouk. . . ἔδωκαςedōkasyou did not give [Me] αὕτηhautēwith her δὲdebut τοῖςtois- δάκρυσινdakrysintears ἔβρεξέebrexeshe wet μουmouMy τοὺςtous- πόδαςpodasfeet καὶkaiand ταῖςtaiswith θριξὶthrixiher hair τῆςtēs. . . κεφαλῆςkephalēs. . . . αὐτῆςautēs. . . ἐξέμαξε.exemaxewiped [them]
