1ὍσοιHosoiAll who εἰσὶνeisinare ὑπὸhypounder ζυγὸνzygon[the] yoke δοῦλοιdouloiof slavery τοὺςtous[their] ἰδίουςidious. . . δεσπόταςdespotasmasters πάσηςpasēs{as} fully τιμῆςtimēsof honor , ἀξίουςaxiousworthy ἡγείσθωσανhēgeisthōsanshould regard ἵναhinaso that μὴmēvvv τὸto- ὄνομαonomaname τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod’s καὶkaiand ἡhē[our] διδασκαλίαdidaskaliateaching βλασφημῆταιblasphēmētaiwill not be discredited .
2οἱhoiThose who δὲde- πιστοὺςpistousbelieving ἔχοντεςechonteshave δεσπόταςdespotasmasters μὴmēvvv καταφρονείτωσανkataphroneitōsanshould not show disrespect ὅτιhotibecause ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , εἰσινeisinthey are ἀλλὰallabut μᾶλλονmallonall the more , δουλευέτωσανdouleuetōsanshould serve [them] ὅτιhotisince πιστοίpistoibelievers . εἰσιeisiare καὶkaiand ἀγαπητοὶagapētoibeloved οἱhoithose τῆςtēs[their] εὐεργεσίαςeuergesiasgood service ἀντιλαμβανόμενοιantilambanomenoireceiving
3ΤαῦταTautathese [principles] . δίδασκεdidaskeTeach καὶkaiand παρακάλειparakaleiencourage ΕἴEiIf τιςtisanyone ἑτεροδιδασκαλεῖheterodidaskaleiteaches another doctrine καὶkaiand μὴmēvvv προσέρχεταιproserchetaidisagrees ὑγιαίνουσιugiainousi[with the] sound λόγοιςlogoiswords τοῖςtois- τοῦtou- ΚυρίουKyriouLord ἡμῶνhēmōnof our ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist καὶkaiand τῇtē- κατ’kat’with εὐσέβειανeusebeiangodly διδασκαλίᾳdidaskaliateaching ,
4τετύφωταιtetyphōtaihe is conceited μηδὲνmēdennothing . ἐπιστάμενοςepistamenos[and] understands ἀλλὰallaInstead , νοσῶνnosōn[he has] an unhealthy interest περὶperiin ζητήσειςzētēseiscontroversies καὶkaiand λογομαχίαςlogomachiassemantics , ἐξexout of ὧνhōnwhich γίνεταιginetaicome φθόνοςphthonosenvy , ἔριςerisstrife , βλασφημίαιblasphēmiaiabusive talk , ὑπόνοιαιhyponoiaisuspicions , πονηραίponēraievil
5διαπαρατριβαὶdiaparatribai[and] constant friction διεφθαρμένωνdiephtharmenōnof depraved ἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōnbetween men τὸνton- νοῦνnounmind καὶkai[who are] ἀπεστερημένωνapesterēmenōndevoid τῆςtēs- ἀληθείαςalētheiasof the truth . νομιζόντωνnomizontōn[These men] regard πορισμὸνporismona means of gain . εἶναιeinaias τὴνtēn- εὐσέβειανeusebeiangodliness ἀφίστασοaphistasodevoid ἀπὸapoaway from τῶνtōn- τοιούτωνtoioutōnsuch as these .
6ἐστίestiI have δέdeBut πορισμὸςporismosgain . μέγαςmegasgreat ἡhē- εὐσέβειαeusebeiagodliness μετὰmetawith αὐταρκείαςautarkeiascontentment
7οὐδὲνoudennothing γὰρgarFor εἰσηνέγκαμενeisēnenkamenwe brought εἰςeisinto τὸνtonthe κόσμονkosmonworld , δῆλονdēlonit is clear ὅτιhotiso οὐδὲoudevvv ἐξενεγκεῖνexenenkeincarry τιtianything {out of it} . δυνάμεθαdynamethawe cannot
8ἔχοντεςechontesif we have δὲdeBut διατροφὰςdiatrophasfood καὶkaiand σκεπάσματαskepasmataclothing , τούτοιςtoutoiswith these . ἀρκεσθησόμεθαarkesthēsomethawe will be content
9ΟἱHoiThose who δὲdehowever , βουλόμενοιboulomenoiwant πλουτεῖνplouteinto be rich , ἐμπίπτουσινempiptousinfall εἰςeisinto πειρασμὸνpeirasmontemptation καὶkaiand παγίδαpagidabecome ensnared καὶkai- ἐπιθυμίαςepithymiasdesires πολλὰςpollasby many ἀνοήτουςanoētousfoolish καὶkaiand βλαβεράςblaberasharmful αἵτινεςhaitinesthat βυθίζουσιbuthizousiplunge τοὺςtous- ἀνθρώπουςanthrōpous[them] εἰςeisinto ὄλεθρονolethronruin καὶkaiand ἀπώλειανapōleiandestruction .
10ῥίζαrhiza[the] root γὰρgarFor πάντωνpantōnof all kinds τῶνtōn- κακῶνkakōnof evil . ἐστινestinis ἡhēthe φιλαργυρίαphilargyrialove of money ἧςhēs[it] , τινεςtinessome ὀρεγόμενοιoregomenoiBy craving ἀπεπλανήθησανapeplanēthēsanhave wandered ἀπὸapoaway from τῆςtēsthe πίστεωςpisteōsfaith καὶkaiand ἑαυτοὺςheautousthemselves περιέπειρανperiepeiranpierced ὀδύναιςodynaissorrows . πολλαῖςpollaiswith many
11ΣὺSyyou , δέdeBut ὦōO ἄνθρωπεanthrōpeman τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , ταῦταtautathese things φεῦγεpheugeflee from δίωκεdiōkepursue δὲdeand δικαιοσύνηνdikaiosynēnrighteousness , εὐσέβειανeusebeiangodliness , πίστινpistinfaith , ἀγάπηνagapēnlove , ὑπομονήνhypomonēnperseverance , πρᾳότητα.praotetagentleness ,
12ἀγωνίζουagōnizouFight τὸνtonthe καλὸνkalongood ἀγῶναagōnafight τῆςtēsof the πίστεωςpisteōsfaith . ἐπιλαβοῦepilabouTake hold τῆςtēsof the αἰωνίουaiōnioueternal ζωῆςzōēslife εἰςeisto ἣνhēnwhich ἐκλήθηςeklēthēsyou were called καὶkaivvv ὡμολόγησαςhōmologēsas[when you made] τὴνtēnthe καλὴνkalēngood ὁμολογίανhomologianconfession ἐνώπιονenōpionbefore πολλῶνpollōnmany μαρτύρωνmartyrōnwitnesses .
13ΠαραγγέλλωParangellōI charge ‹σοι›soiyou ἐνώπιονenōpionin the presence τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , τοῦtouwho ζωοποιοῦντοςzōopoiountosgives life τὰtato πάνταpantaall things , καὶkaiand ΧριστοῦChristouof Christ ἸησοῦIēsouJesus , τοῦtouwho μαρτυρήσαντοςmartyrēsantosin His testimony ἐπὶepibefore ΠοντίουPontiouPontius ΠιλάτουPilatouPilate : τὴνtēn[this] καλὴνkalēngood ὁμολογίανhomologianconfession
14τηρῆσαίtērēsaiKeep σεse. . . τὴνtēn[this] ἐντολὴνentolēncommandment ἄσπιλονaspilonwithout stain ἀνεπίληπτονanepilepton[or] reproach μέχριmechriuntil τῆςtēsthe ἐπιφανείαςepiphaneiasappearance τοῦtou- ΚυρίουKyriouLord ἡμῶνhēmōnof our ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist ,
15ἣνhēnwhich καιροῖςkairoistime . ἰδίοιςidioisin His own δείξειdeixeiwill bring about ὁho[He] μακάριοςmakariosblessed καὶkaiand μόνοςmonosonly ΔυνάστηςDynastēsSovereign [One] — ὁhothe ΒασιλεὺςBasileusKing τῶνtōnof βασιλευόντωνbasileuontōnkings καὶkaiand ΚύριοςKyriosLord τῶνtōnof κυριευόντωνkyrieuontōnlords —
16ὁho[He] μόνοςmonosalone ἔχωνechōnis ἀθανασίανathanasianimmortal φῶςphōslight . οἰκῶνoikōn[and] dwells ἀπρόσιτονaprositonin unapproachable ὃνhon[Him] , εἶδενeidenhas ever seen οὐδεὶςoudeisNo one ἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōn- οὐδὲoudenor ἰδεῖνideinsee [Him] . δύναταιdynataican [anyone] ᾧhōTo [Him be] τιμὴtimēhonor καὶkaiand κράτοςkratosdominion ! αἰώνιονaiōnioneternal ἀμήνamēnAmen .
17ΤοῖςToisthose who are πλουσίοιςplousioisrich ἐνenin τῷtōthe νῦνnynpresent αἰῶνιaiōniage παράγγελλεparangelleInstruct μὴmēnot ὑψηλοφρονεῖνhypsēlophroneinto be conceited μηδὲmēde[and] not ἠλπικέναιēlpikenaito put their hope ἐπὶepiin πλούτουploutouof wealth , ἀδηλότητιadēlotēti[the] uncertainty ἀλλ’all’but ἐνenin τῷtōthe ΘεῷTheōGod , τῷtōwho ζῶντιzōntias long as he lives . τῷtōwho παρέχοντιparechontiprovides ἡμῖνhēminfor us πάνταpantaall things πλουσίωςplousiōsrichly εἰςeisto ἀπόλαυσινapolausinenjoy .
18ἀγαθοεργεῖνagathoergein[Instruct them] to do good , πλουτεῖνplouteinto be rich ἐνenin ἔργοιςergoisworks , καλοῖςkaloisgood εὐμεταδότουςeumetadotousgenerous εἶναιeinai[and] to be κοινωνικούςkoinōnikous[and] ready to share ,
19ἀποθησαυρίζονταςapothēsaurizontastreasuring up ἑαυτοῖςheautoisfor themselves θεμέλιονthemelionfoundation καλὸνkalona firm εἰςeisfor τὸtothe μέλλονmellonfuture , ἵναhinaso that ἐπιλάβωνταιepilabōntaithey may take hold τῆςtēsof αἰωνίουaiōnioueternal ζωῆςzōēslife
20ὦōO ΤιμόθεεTimotheeTimothy , τὴνtēnwhat παραθήκηνparathēkēnhas been entrusted [to you] . φύλαξονphylaxonguard ἐκτρεπόμενοςektrepomenosAvoid τὰςtas- βεβήλουςbebēlousirreverent , κενοφωνίαςkenophōniasempty chatter καὶkaiand ἀντιθέσειςantitheseisthe opposing arguments τῆςtēs- ψευδωνύμουpseudōnymouof so-called γνώσεωςgnōseōs“ knowledge , ”
21ἥνhēnwhich τινεςtinessome ἐπαγγελλόμενοιepangellomenoihave professed περὶperifrom τὴνtēnthe πίστινpistinfaith . ἠστόχησανēstochēsanand [thus] swerved away ἩHē- χάριςcharisGrace [be] μετὰmetawith σουsouyour ἀμήνamēnAmen .
