1ΓίνεσθεGinestheBe οὖνountherefore , μιμηταὶmimētaiimitators τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , ὡςhōsas τέκναteknachildren , ἀγαπητάagapētabeloved
2καὶkaiand περιπατεῖτεperipateitewalk ἐνenin ἀγάπῃagapēlove , καθὼςkathōsjust as καὶkai. . . ὁho- ΧριστὸςChristosChrist ἠγάπησενēgapēsenloved ἡμᾶς*hēmasus καὶkaiand παρέδωκενparedōkengave Himself up ἑαυτὸνheauton. . . ὑπὲρhyperfor ἡμῶνhēmōnus προσφορὰνprosphoranoffering καὶkai- θυσίανthysiansacrificial τῷtō- ΘεῷTheōto God . εἰςeisas ὀσμὴνosmēnvvv εὐωδίαςeuōdiasa fragrant
3ΠορνείαPorneiaof sexual immorality , δὲdeBut καὶkai- πᾶσαpasaof any kind ἀκαθαρσίαakatharsiaof impurity , ἢēor πλεονεξίαpleonexiaof greed . μηδὲmēdevvv ὀνομαζέσθωonomazesthōthere must not be even a hint ἐνenamong ὑμῖνhyminyou , καθὼςkathōsas πρέπειprepeiis proper ἁγίοιςhagioisamong the saints ,
4καὶkai[or] αἰσχρότηςaischrotēsobscenity , καὶkai- μωρολογίαmōrologiafoolish talk , ἢēor εὐτραπελίαeutrapeliacrude joking , τὰtawhat οὐκouk[any] ἀνήκονταanikontabe,appropriate ἀλλὰallabut μᾶλλονmallonrather εὐχαριστίαeucharistiathanksgiving .
5τοῦτοtoutoof this γὰρgarFor ἔστηestē[and] stood [there] . γινώσκοντεςginōskontesyou can be sure ὅτιhoti- : πᾶςpas[No] πόρνοςpornosimmoral , ἢē- ἀκάθαρτοςakathartosimpure , ἢēor πλεονέκτηςpleonektēsgreedy person ὅho(that ἐστινestinis , εἰδωλολάτρηςeidōlolatrēsan idolater) , οὐκouk[any] ἔχειecheihas κληρονομίανklēronomianinheritance ἐνenin τῇtēthe βασιλείᾳbasileiakingdom τοῦtou- ΧριστοῦChristouof Christ καὶkaiand ΘεοῦTheouof God .
6ΜηδεὶςMēdeis{Let} no one ὑμᾶςhymasyou ἀπατάτωapatatōdeceive κενοῖςkenoiswith empty λόγοιςlogoiswords , διὰdiabecause of ταῦταtautasuch things γὰρgarfor ἔρχεταιerchetaiis coming ἡhēthe ὀργὴorgēwrath τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God ἐπὶepion τοὺςtousthe υἱοὺςhuioussons τῆςtēs- ἀπειθείαςapeitheiasof disobedience .
7μὴmē{do} not οὖνounTherefore γίνεσθεginesthebe συμμέτοχοιsymmetochoipartakers αὐτῶνautōnwith them .
8ἮτεĒteyou were γάρgarFor ποτεpoteonce σκότοςskotosdarkness , νῦνnynnow δὲdebut φῶςphōs[you are] light ἐνenin ΚυρίῳKyriō[the] Lord . ὡςhōsas τέκναteknachildren φωτὸςphōtosof light , περιπατεῖτεperipateiteWalk
9ὁhothe γὰρgarfor καρπὸςkarposfruit τοῦtouof the ΠνεύματοςPneumatosSpirit ἐνenin πάσῃpasēall ἀγαθωσύνῃagathōsynēgoodness , καὶkai- δικαιοσύνῃdikaiosynērighteousness , καὶkaiand ἀληθείᾳalētheiatruth .
10δοκιμάζοντεςdokimazontesTest and prove τίtiwhat ἐστινestinvvv εὐάρεστονeuarestonpleases τῷtōthe ΚυρίῳKyriōLord .
11ΚαὶKai- μὴmēvvv συγκοινωνεῖτεsugkoinoneiteHave no fellowship with τοῖςtoisthe ἔργοιςergoisdeeds τοῖςtois- ἀκάρποιςakarpoisfruitless τοῦtou- σκότουςskotousof darkness , μᾶλλονmallonrather δὲdebut καὶkai. . . ἐλέγχετεelencheteexpose [them] .
12τὰtawhat γὰρgarFor κρυφῇkryphēin secret . γινόμεναginomena[the disobedient] do ὑπ’hyp’. . . αὐτῶνautōn. . . αἰσχρόνaischronshameful ἐστίestiI have καὶkaieven λέγεινlegeinto mention
13τὰtawhat δὲdeBut πάνταpantaeverything ἐλεγχόμεναelenchomenaexposed ὑπὸhypoby τοῦtouthe φωτὸςphōtoslight φανεροῦταιphaneroutaibecomes visible , πᾶνpaneverything γὰρgarfor τὸtothat φανερούμενονphaneroumenonis illuminated φῶςphōsa light [itself] . ἐστίestiI have
14διὸdioSo λέγειlegeiit is said : ἜγειρεEgeire“ Wake up , ὁhoO καθεύδωνkatheudōnsleeper , καὶkai- ἀνάσταanastarise up ἐκekfrom τῶνtōnthe νεκρῶνnekrōndead , καὶkaiand ἐπιφαύσειepiphauseiwill shine on σοιsoiyou . ” ὁho- ΧριστόςChristosChrist
15ΒλέπετεBlepeteattention , οὖνounthen , πῶςpōsto how ἀκριβῶςakribōsPay careful περιπατεῖτεperipateiteyou walk , μὴmēnot ὡςhōsas ἄσοφοιasophoiunwise ἀλλ’all’but ὡςhōsas σοφοίsophoiwise ,
16ἐξαγοραζόμενοιexagorazomenoiredeeming τὸνtonthe καιρόνkairontime , ὅτιhotibecause αἱhaithe ἡμέραιhēmeraidays πονηραίponēraievil . εἰσι.eisiare
17διὰdiaTherefore τοῦτοtouto. . . μὴmē{do} not γίνεσθεginesthebe ἄφρονεςaphronesfoolish , ἀλλὰallabut συνιέντεςsunientesunderstand τίtiwhat τὸtothe θέλημαthelēmawill [is] . τοῦtou- ΚυρίουKyriouLord’s
18καὶkai- μὴmē{Do} not μεθύσκεσθεmethyskestheget drunk οἴνῳoinōon wine , ἐνen- ᾧhōwhich ἐστινestinleads to ἀσωτίαasōtiareckless indiscretion . ἀλλὰallaInstead , πληροῦσθεplērousthebe filled ἐνenwith ΠνεύματιPneumati[the] Spirit .
19λαλοῦντεςlalountesSpeak ἑαυτοῖςheautoisto one another ψαλμοῖςpsalmoispsalms , καὶkai- ὕμνοιςhymnoishymns , καὶkaiand ᾠδαῖςōdaissongs . πνευματικαῖςpneumatikaisspiritual ᾄδοντεςadontesSing καὶkaiand ψάλλοντεςpsallontesmake music τῇtēin καρδίᾳkardiahearts ὑμῶνhymōnyour τῷtōto the ΚυρίῳKyriōLord ,
20εὐχαριστοῦντεςeucharistountesgiving thanks πάντοτεpantotealways ὑπὲρhyperfor πάντωνpantōneverything ἐνenin ὀνόματιonomati[the] name τοῦtou- ΚυρίουKyriouLord ἡμῶνhēmōnof our ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist . τῷtōto the ΘεῷTheōGod καὶkai- ΠατρίPatri[the] Father
21ὙποτασσόμενοιHypotassomenoiSubmit ἀλλήλοιςallēloisto one another ἐνenout of φόβῳphobōreverence ΧριστοῦChristoufor Christ .
22ΑἱHai- γυναῖκεςgynaikesWives , τοῖςtois[submit] to ἰδίοιςidioisyour ἀνδράσινandrasinhusbands ὑποτάσσησθεhypotassēsthesubmit ὡςhōsas τῷtōto the ΚυρίῳKyriōLord .
23ὅτιhotiFor ὁho- ἀνήρanēr[the] husband ἐστίestiI have κεφαλὴkephalē[the] head τῆςtēsof the γυναικὸςgynaikoswife ὡςhōsas καὶkai- ὁho- ΧριστὸςChristosChrist κεφαλὴkephalē[is the] head τῆςtēsof the ἐκκλησίαςekklēsiaschurch , καὶkai- αὐτὸςautos[of which] He ἐστίestiI have σωτὴρsōtēr[is the] Savior . τοῦtou[His] σώματοςsōmatosbody ,
24ἀλλ’all’but ὥσπερhōsperlike ᾖē- ἐκκλησίαekklēsiachurch ὑποτάσσεταιhypotassetaisubmits τῷtō- ΧριστῷChristōto Christ , οὕτωhoutōso καὶkaialso αἱhai- γυναῖκεςgynaikeswives [should submit] τοῖςtoisto their ἰδίοιςidioisyour ἀνδράσινandrasinhusbands ἐνenout of παντίpantieverything .
25ΟἱHoi- ἄνδρεςandresHusbands , ἀγαπᾶτεagapatelove τὰςtas[your] γυναῖκαςgynaikaswives , ἑαυτὸνheauton. . . καθὼςkathōsas καὶkaijust ὁho- ΧριστὸςChristosChrist ἠγάπησεegapeseshe has loved τὴνtēnthe ἐκκλησίανekklēsianchurch καὶkaiand ἑαυτὸνheauton. . . παρέδωκενparedōkengave Himself up ὑπὲρhyperfor αὐτῆςautēsher
26ἵναhinato αὐτὴνautēnher , ἁγιάσῃhagiasēsanctify καθαρίσαςkatharisascleansing [her] τῷtōby the λουτρῷloutrōwashing τοῦtou- ὕδατοςhydatoswith water ἐνenthrough ῥήματιrhēmati[the] word ,
27ἵναhina[and] to παραστήσῃparastēsēpresent αὐτὴνautēnher , ἑαυτῷheautōto Himself ἔνδοξονendoxonas a glorious τὴνtēn- ἐκκλησίανekklēsianchurch , μὴmēvvv ἔχουσανechousanwithout σπίλονspilonstain ἢēor ῥυτίδαrhytidawrinkle ἤēor τιtiany τῶνtōn- τοιούτωνtoioutōnsuch [blemish] , ἀλλ’all’but ἵναhina- ᾖē- ἁγίαhagiaholy καὶkaiand ἄμωμοςamōmosblameless .
28ΟὕτωςHoutōsIn the same way ὀφείλουσινopheilousinought οἱhoi- ἄνδρεςandreshusbands ἀγαπᾶνagapanto love τὰςtas- ἑαυτῶνheautōntheir γυναῖκαςgynaikaswives ὡςhōsas τὰta- ἑαυτῶνheautōntheir own σώματαsōmatabodies . ὁhoHe ἀγαπῶνagapōnwho loves τὴνtēn- ἑαυτοῦheautouhis γυναῖκαgynaikawife ἑαυτὸνheautonhimself . ἀγαπᾷagapaloves
29οὐδεὶςoudeisno one γάρgarIndeed , ποτεpoteever τὴνtēn[own] ἑαυτοῦheautouhis σάρκαsarkabody , ἐμίσησενemisēsenhated ἀλλ’all’but ἐκτρέφειektrepheihe nourishes καὶkaiand θάλπειthalpeicherishes αὐτήνautēnit , καθὼςkathōsjust as καὶkai[does] ὁho- ΧριστὸςChristosChrist τὴνtēnthe ἐκκλησίανekklēsianchurch .
30ὅτιhotiFor μέληmelēmembers ἐσμὲνesmenwe are τοῦtouof σώματοςsōmatosbody . αὐτοῦautouHis ἐκekfrom τῆςtēs- σαρκὸςsarkosflesh αὐτοῦautouHis καὶkai[does] ἐκekfrom τῶνtōnthe ὀστέωνosteōnbones αὐτοῦautouHis
31ἈντὶAnti“ For this reason τούτουtoutou. . . καταλείψειkataleipseiwill leave ἄνθρωποςanthrōposa man τὸνtonhis πατέραpaterafather καὶkaiand τὴνtēn- μητέραmēteramother καὶkaiand προσκολληθήσεταιproskollēthēsetaibe united πρὸςprosto τὴνtēn- γυναῖκαgynaikawife , αὐτοῦautouhis καὶkaiand ἔσονταιesontaiwill become οἱhoithe δύοdyotwo εἰςeis. . . σάρκαsarkaflesh .” μίανmianone
32τὸto- μυστήριονmystērionmystery τοῦτοtoutoThis μέγαmegaprofound , ἐστίνestinis ἐγὼegōI δὲdebut λέγωlegōam speaking εἰςeisabout ΧριστὸνChristonChrist καὶkaiand εἰςeis- τὴνtēnthe ἐκκλησίανekklēsianchurch .
33πλὴνplēnNevertheless , καὶkaiand ὑμεῖςhymeisof you οἱhoi- καθ’kath’. . . ἕναhena. . . ἕκαστοςhekastoseach one τὴνtēnthe ἑαυτοῦheautouhis γυναῖκαgynaikawife οὕτωςhoutōs. . . ἀγαπάτωagapatōmust love ὡςhōsas [he loves] ἑαυτόνheautonhimself , ἡhēthe δὲdeand γυνὴgynēwife ἵναhina- φοβῆταιphobētaimust respect τὸνton[her] ἄνδραandrahusband .
