1ΣυμεὼνSymeōnSimon ΠέτροςPetrosPeter , δοῦλοςdoulosa servant καὶkaiand ἀπόστολοςapostolosapostle ἸησοῦIēsouof Jesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist , ΤοῖςToisTo those who ἰσότιμονisotimonas precious ἡμῖνhēminas ours : λαχοῦσιlakhousihave received πίστινpistina faith ἐνenthrough δικαιοσύνῃdikaiosynē[the] righteousness τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod ἡμῶνhēmōnof our καὶkaiand ΣωτῆροςSōtērosSavior ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist
2ΧάριςCharisGrace ὑμῖνhyminto you καὶkaiand εἰρήνηeirēnēpeace πληθυνθείηplēthyntheiēbe multiplied ἐνenthrough ἐπιγνώσειepignōsei[the] knowledge τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God καὶkaiand ἸησοῦIēsouof Jesus τοῦtou- ΚυρίουKyriouLord . ἡμῶνhēmōnour
3ὩςHōs- πάνταpantaeverything ἡμῖνhēminus τῆςtēs- θείαςtheiasdivine δυνάμεωςdynameōspower αὐτοῦautouHis τὰta[we need] πρὸςprosfor ζωὴνzōēnlife καὶkaiand εὐσέβειανeusebeiangodliness δεδωρημένηςdedōrēmenēshas given διὰdiathrough τῆςtēsthe ἐπιγνώσεωςepignōseōsknowledge τοῦtouof Him who καλέσαντοςkalesantoscalled ἡμᾶςhēmasus διὰdiathrough δόξηςdoxēsGlory , καὶkaiand ἀρετῆς,aretesexcellence .
4δι’di’Through ὧνhōn[these] τὰta[His] τίμιαtimiaprecious ἡμῖνhēminus καὶkaiand μέγισταmegistamagnificent ἐπαγγέλματαepangelmatapromises , δεδώρηταιdedōrētaiHe has given ἵναhinaso that διὰdiathrough τούτωνtoutōn[them] γένησθεgenēstheyou may become θείαςtheiasof [the] divine κοινωνοὶkoinōnoipartakers φύσεωςphyseōsnature , ἀποφυγόντεςapophygontesnow that you have escaped τῆςtēsthe ἐνenin κόσμῳkosmōworld ἐνencaused by ἐπιθυμίᾳepithymiaevil desires . φθορᾶςphthorascorruption
5ΚαὶKaivvv αὐτὸautovery [reason] , τοῦτοtoutoFor this δὲdevvv σπουδὴνspoudēneffort πᾶσανpasanevery παρεισενέγκαντεςpareisenenkantesmake ἐπιχορηγήσατεepichorēgēsateto add ἐνento τῇ- πίστειpisteifaith ὑμῶνhymōnyour τὴνtēn- ἀρετήνaretēnvirtue ; ἐνento δὲdeand τῇ- ἀρετῇaretēvirtue , τὴνtēn- γνῶσινgnōsinknowledge ;
6ἐνento δὲdeand τῇ- γνώσειgnōseiknowledge , τὴνtēn- ἐγκράτειανenkrateianself-control ; ἐνento δὲdeand τῇ- ἐγκρατείᾳenkrateiaself-control , τὴνtēn- ὑπομονήνhypomonēnperseverance ; ἐνento δὲdeand τῇ- ὑπομονῇhypomonēperseverance , τὴνtēn- εὐσέβειανeusebeiangodliness ;
7ἐνento δὲdeand τῇ- εὐσεβείᾳeusebeiagodliness , τὴνtēn- φιλαδελφίανphiladelphianbrotherly kindness ; ἐνento δὲdeand τῇ- φιλαδελφίᾳphiladelphiabrotherly kindness , τὴνtēn- ἀγάπηνagapēnlove .
8ταῦταtautathese [ qualities ] γὰρgarFor ὑμῖνhymin[if] you ὑπάρχονταhyparchontapossess καὶkaiand πλεονάζονταpleonazontacontinue to grow [in them] , οὐκoukvvv ἀργοὺςargousineffective οὐδὲoudeand ἀκάρπουςakarpousunproductive καθίστησινkathistēsinthey will keep you from being εἰςeisin τὴνtēn[your] τοῦtou- ΚυρίουKyriouLord ἡμῶνhēmōnof our ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist . ἐπίγνωσινepignōsinknowledge
9whoever γὰρgar[But] μὴvvv πάρεστιparestilacks ταῦταtautathese [ traits ] τυφλόςtyphlosto the point of blindness , ἐστίestiI have μυωπάζωνmyōpazōnnearsighted λήθηνlēthēnhaving forgotten λαβὼνlabōnvvv τοῦtouthat καθαρισμοῦkatharismouhe has been cleansed τῶνtōn- πάλαιpalaipast αὐτοῦautoufrom his ἁμαρτιῶνhamartiōnsins .
10ΔιὸDioTherefore , μᾶλλονmallon. . . ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , σπουδάσατεspoudasatestrive βεβαίανbebaiansure . ὑμῶνhymōnyour τὴνtēn- κλῆσινklēsincalling καὶkaiand ἐκλογὴνeklogēnelection ποιεῖσθαιpoieisthaito make ταῦταtautathese things γὰρgarFor ποιοῦντεςpoiountesif you practice οὐou{you will} never μὴ. . . πταίσητέptaisētestumble , ποτεpote. . .
11οὕτωhoutōso γὰρgarand πλουσίωςplousiōsa lavish ἐπιχορηγηθήσεταιepichorēgēthēsetaiwill receive ὑμῖνhyminyou - εἴσοδοςeisodosreception εἰςeisinto τὴνtēnthe αἰώνιονaiōnioneternal βασιλείανbasileiankingdom τοῦtou- ΚυρίουKyriouLord ἡμῶνhēmōnof our καὶkaiand ΣωτῆροςSōtērosSavior ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist .
12ΔιὸDioTherefore οὐκoukvvv ἀμελήσωamelisoneglect ἀεὶaeialways ὑμᾶςhymasyou ὑπομιμνῄσκεινhypomimnēskeinremind περὶperiof τούτωνtoutōnthese things , καίπερkaipereven though εἰδόταςeidotasyou know [them] καὶkaiand ἐστηριγμένουςestērigmenousare established ἐνenin τῇthe παρούσῃparousēyou now have . ἀληθείᾳalētheiatruth
13δίκαιονdikaionright δὲde- ἡγοῦμαιhēgoumaiI think it is ἐφ’eph’as ὅσονhosonlong as εἰμὶeimiI [live] ἐνenin τούτῳtoutō- τῷthe σκηνώματιskēnōmatitent [ of my body ] , διεγείρεινdiegeireinto refresh ὑμᾶςhymasyour ἐνenvvv ὑπομνήσειhypomnēseimemory
14εἰδὼςeidōsbecause I know ὅτιhotithat ταχινήtachinēsoon ἐστινestinwill - ἀπόθεσιςapothesisbe laid aside , τοῦtouvvv σκηνώματόςskēnōmatosthis tent μουmouvvv καθὼςkathōsas καὶkai. . . ho- ΚύριοςKyriosLord ἡμῶνhēmōnour ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ΧριστὸςChristosChrist ἐδήλωσέedelosehas made clear μοιmoito me .
15σπουδάσωspoudasōI will make every effort to ensure δὲdeAnd καὶkai. . . ἑκάστοτεhekastoteat all times . ἔχεινecheinwill ὑμᾶςhymasyou μετὰmeta[that] after τὴνtēn- ἐμὴνemēnmy ἔξοδονexodondeparture , τὴνtēn- τούτωνtoutōnthese things μνήμηνmnēmēnbe able to recall ποιεῖσθαιpoieisthaivvv
16ΟὐOuvvv γὰρgarFor σεσοφισμένοιςsesophismenoiscleverly devised μύθοιςmythoisfables ἐξακολουθήσαντεςexakolouthēsanteswe did not follow ἐγνωρίσαμενegnōrisamenwhen we made known ὑμῖνhyminto you τὴνtēnthe τοῦtou- ΚυρίουKyriouLord ἡμῶνhēmōnof our ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist , δύναμινdynaminpower καὶkaiand παρουσίανparousiancoming ἀλλ’all’but ἐπόπταιepoptaieyewitnesses γενηθέντεςgenēthenteswe were τῆςtēs- ἐκείνουekeinouof His μεγαλειότητοςmegaleiotētosmajesty .
17λαβὼνlabōnHe received γὰρgarFor παρὰparafrom ΘεοῦTheouGod ΠατρὸςPatros[the] Father τιμὴνtimēnhonor καὶkaiand δόξανdoxanglory φωνῆςphōnēs[when] the voice ἐνεχθείσηςenechtheisēscame αὐτῷautōto Him τοιᾶσδεtoiasdesaying , ὑπὸhypofrom τῆςtēsthe μεγαλοπρεποῦςmegaloprepousMajestic δόξηςdoxēsGlory , οὗτόςhoutos“ This ἐστινestinis ho- ΥἱόςHuiosSon , μουmou- ho- ἀγαπητόςagapētosbeloved εἰςeisin ὃνhonwhom ἐγὼegōI εὐδόκησαeudokēsaam well pleased .”
18καὶkaiAnd ταύτηνtautēnthis τὴνtēn- φωνὴνphōnēnvoice ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe ourselves ἠκούσαμενēkousamenheard ἐξexfrom οὐρανοῦouranouheaven ἐνεχθεῖσανenechtheisan. . . σὺνsynwith αὐτῷautōHim ὄντεςontes[when] we were ἐνenon τῷthe ὄρειoreimountain . τῷthe ἁγίῳhagiōholy
19ΚαὶKaivvv ἔχομενechomenWe also have βεβαιότερονbebaioteronas confirmed beyond doubt . τὸνtonthe προφητικὸνprophētikonof the prophets λόγονlogonword to it , καλῶςkalōswell ποιεῖτεpoieite[And] you will do προσέχοντεςprosechontesto pay attention ὡςhōsas λύχνῳlychnōto a lamp φαίνοντιphainontishining ἐνenin αὐχμηρῷauchmērō[a] dark τόπῳtopōplace , ἕωςheōsuntil οὗhou[the] ἡμέραhēmeraday διαυγάσῃdiaugasēdawns καὶkaiand φωσφόροςphōsphoros[the] morning star ἀνατείλῃanateilērises ἐνenin ταῖςtais- καρδίαιςkardiaishearts . ὑμῶνhymōnyour
20τοῦτοtouto- πρῶτονprōtonAbove all , γινώσκοντεςginōskontesyou must understand ὅτιhotithat πᾶσαpasa. . . προφητείαprophēteiaprophecy γραφῆςgraphēsof Scripture ἰδίαςidiasfrom [one’s] own ἐπιλύσεωςepilyseōsinterpretation . οὐouno [such] γίνεταιginetaicomes
21οὐouno [such] γὰρgarFor θελήματιthelēmatiby [the] will ἀνθρώπουanthrōpouof man , ἠνέχθηēnechthēbrought forth ποτέpote{was} ever προφητείαprophēteiaprophecy ἀλλ’all’but ὑπὸhypofrom ΠνεύματοςPneumatosSpirit . ἉγίουHagiou[the] Holy φερόμενοιpheromenoias they were carried along ἐλάλησανelalēsanspoke ἅγιοιhagioiholy ΘεοῦTheouGod ἄνθρωποιanthrōpoimen
