3εἰπὲeipesay τεte- πρὸςpros. . . αὐτούςautousthem , εἰςeisto τίtiwhat , οὖνounthen , ἐβαπτίσθητεebaptisthētewere you baptized ? ” ΟἱHoi- δὲde- εἰπὼνeipōnhe said , εἰςeisto τῷthe ἸωάννουIōannouof John , ” βάπτισμαbaptismabaptism
4εἰπὲeipesay δὲde- ΠαῦλοςPaulosPaul ἸωάννηςIōannēs“ John’s [Μὲν]Men- ἐβάπτισεebaptisebaptized βάπτισμαbaptismaa baptism μετανοίαςmetanoiasof repentance . τῷthe λαῷlaōpeople λέγωνlegōnHe told εἰςeisin τὸνtonthe [One] ἐρχόμενονerchomenoncoming μετ’met’after αὐτὸνautonhim , ἵναhinato πιστεύσωσι,pisteusosibelieve τοῦτ’tout’that ἔστινestinis , εἰςeisin τὸνton- ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus . ” ΧριστὸνChristonChrist
5ἈκούσαντεςAkousantesOn hearing this , δὲde- ἐβαπτίσθησανebaptisthēsanthey were baptized εἰςeisinto τὸtothe ὄνομαonomaname τοῦtouof the ΚυρίουKyriouLord ἸησοῦIēsouJesus .
6καὶkaiAnd [when] ἐπιθέντοςepithentoslaid αὐτοῖςautoison them , τοῦtou- ΠαύλουPaulouPaul [τὰς]tas[his] χεῖραςcheirashands ἦλθεēlthecame τὸto- ΠνεῦμαPneumaSpirit τὸto- ἍγιονHagionHoly ἐπ’ep’upon αὐτούςautousthem , ἐλάλουνelalounthey spoke τεteand γλώσσαιςglōssaisin tongues καὶkaiand προεφήτευον.proepheteuonprophesied .
7ἦσανēsanThere were δὲde- οἱhoi- πάντεςpantesin all . ἄνδρεςandresmen ὡσεὶhōseiabout δεκαδύο.dekaduotwelve
8ΕἰσελθὼνEiselthōn[Paul] went δὲdeThen εἰςeisinto τὴνtēnthe συναγωγὴνsynagōgēnsynagogue ἐπαρρησιάζετοeparrēsiazeto[and] spoke boldly [there] ἐπὶepifor μῆναςmēnasmonths , τρεῖςtreisthree διαλεγόμενοςdialegomenosarguing καὶkai- πείθωνpeithōnpersuasively [τὰ]ta- περὶperiabout τῆςtēsthe βασιλείαςbasileiaskingdom τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God .
9ὡςhōswhen δέdeBut τινεςtinessome of them ἐσκληρύνοντοesklērynontostubbornly καὶkai- ἠπείθουνēpeithounrefused to believe κακολογοῦντεςkakologountesmaligned τὴνtēnthe ὉδὸνHodonWay , ἐνώπιονenōpionvvv τοῦtouvvv πλήθουςplēthous[and] publicly ἀποστὰςapostas[and] left ἀπ’ap’. . . αὐτῶνautōn[the synagogue] ἀφώρισεaphorise[Paul] took τοὺςtous[his] μαθητάςmathētasdisciples καθ’kath’. . . ἡμέρανhēmeran. . . διαλεγόμενοςdialegomenosto conduct daily discussions ἐνenin τῇthe σχολῇscholēlecture hall ΤυράννουTyrannouof Tyrannus . τινοςtinosvvv

13ἘπεχείρησανEpecheirēsanwho tried δέdeNow τινεςtines[there were] some ἀπὸapovvv τῶνtōnthe περιερχομένωνperierchomenōnitinerant ἸουδαίωνIoudaiōnJewish ἐξορκιστῶνexorkistōnexorcists ὀνομάζεινonomazeinto invoke ἐπὶepiover τοὺςtousthose ἔχονταςechontaswith τὰta- πνεύματαpneumataspirits . τὰta- πονηρὰponēraevil τὸtothe ὄνομαonomaname τοῦtouof the ΚυρίουKyriouLord ἸησοῦIēsouJesus λέγοντεςlegontesThey would say , ὉρκίζομενorkizomenI beg ὑμᾶςhymasyou τὸνton[by] ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus , ὃνhonwhom hothe ΠαῦλοςPaulosPaul κηρύσσειkērysseiproclaims . ”
14ἦσανēsanwere δὲdeEventually , τίνεςtineswho υἱοὶhuioisons ΣκευᾶSkeuaof Sceva , ἸουδαίουIoudaioua Jewish ἀρχιερέωςarchiereōschief priest , ἑπτὰheptaSeven οἱhoi- τοῦτοtoutoThis ποιοῦντεςpoiountesdoing
15ἀποκριθὲνapokrithenanswered δὲdeEventually , τὸto[one of] the πνεῦμαpneumaspirits τὸto- πονηρὸνponēronevil εἰπὲeipesay ΤὸνTon- , ἸησοῦνIēsoun“ Jesus γινώσκωginōskōI know , καὶkaiand τὸνton- ΠαῦλονPaulonPaul , ἐπίσταμαιepistamaiI know about ὑμεῖςhymeisyou ? ” δὲdebut τίνεςtineswho ἐστέesteare
16καὶkaiThen ἐφαλλόμενοςephallomenosjumped ἐπ’ep’on αὐτοὺςautousthem with ἄνθρωποςanthrōposman ἐνen- with ἦνēn. . . τὸtothe πνεῦμαpneumaspirit τὸto- πονηρὸνponēronevil κατακυριεύσαςkatakyrieusas[and] overpowered αὐτῶνautōn. . . ἴσχυσεiskhusecould κατ’kat’. . . αὐτῶνautōn. . . ὥστεhōstewas so violent γυμνοὺςgymnousnaked καὶkaiand τετραυματισμένουςtetraumatismenouswounded . ἐκφυγεῖνekphygeinthat they ran ἐκekout of τοῦtouthe οἴκουoikouhouse ἐκείνουekeinou-
17ΤοῦτοToutoThis δὲde- ἐγένετοegenetobecame γνωστὸνgnōstonknown πᾶσινpasinto all ἸουδαίοιςIoudaioisJews τεte- καὶkaiand ἝλλησιellesiGreeks τοῖςtoisthe κατοικοῦσιkatoikousiliving τὴνtēn- ἜφεσονEphesonin Ephesus , καὶkaiand ἐπέπεσεepepesegripped φόβοςphobosfear ἐπὶepiover πάνταςpantasall αὐτούςautousof them . καὶkai[So] ἐμεγαλύνετοemegalynetowas held in high honor . τὸtothe ὄνομαonomaname τοῦtouof the ΚυρίουKyriouLord ἸησοῦIēsouJesus
18πολλοίpolloiMany τεtenow τῶνtōnwho πεπιστευκότωνpepisteukotōnhad believed ἤρχοντοērchontocame forward , ἐξομολογούμενοιexomologoumenoiconfessing καὶkaiand ἀναγγέλλοντεςanangellontesdisclosing τὰςtas- πράξειςpraxeisdeeds . αὐτῶνautōntheir
19ἱκανοὶhikanoia number δὲdeAnd τῶνtōnof those who τὰta- περίεργαperiergamagic arts πραξάντωνpraxantōnhad practiced συνενέγκαντεςsynenenkantesbrought τὰςtas[their] βίβλουςbiblousbooks κατέκαιονkatekaion[and] burned [them] ἐνώπιονenōpionin front of πάντωνpantōneveryone . καὶkai[When] συνεψήφισανsynepsēphisanwas calculated , τὰςtasthe τιμὰςtimasvalue αὐτῶνautōnof [the books] καὶkai- εὗρονheuron[the total came to] ἀργυρίουargyrioudrachmas . μυριάδαςmyriadas. . . πέντεpentefifty thousand
20οὕτωhoutōso κατὰkatavvv κράτοςkratospowerfully hothe λόγοςlogosword τοῦtouof the ΚυρίουKyriouLord ηὔξανεeuxanegrew καὶkaiand ἴσχυενischyenprevail .
21ὩςHōsAfter δὲde- ἐπληρώθηeplērōthēhad happened , ταῦταtautathese things ἔθετοethetoresolved ho- ΠαῦλοςPaulosPaul ἐνenin τῷthe πνεύματιpneumatiSpirit διελθὼνdielthōnafter he had passed through τὴνtēn- ΜακεδονίανMakedonianMacedonia καὶkaiand ἈχαΐανAchaianAchaia . πορεύεσθαιporeuesthaito go εἰςeisto Ἱεροσαλήμ,ierosalemJerusalem . εἰπὼνeipōnhe said , ὅτιhoti“ - ΜετὰMeta“ After τὸto- γενέσθαιgenesthaihave been μεmeI ἐκεῖekeithere , ” δεῖdeimust μεmeI καὶkaias well . ” ῬώμηνRhōmēnRome ἰδεῖνideinsee
22ἀποστείλαςaposteilasHe sent δὲde- εἰςeisto τὴνtēn- ΜακεδονίανMakedonianMacedonia , δύοdyotwo τῶνtōnof διακονούντωνdiakonountōnhelpers , αὐτῷautōhis ΤιμόθεονTimotheonTimothy καὶkaiand ἜραστονErastonErastus , αὐτὸςautos[while] he ἐπέσχεepeskhestayed χρόνονchrononfor a time εἰςeisin τὴνtēn- ἈσίανAsian[the province of] Asia .
23ἘγένετοEgenetothere arose δὲde- κατὰkataAbout τὸνton- καιρὸνkairontime ἐκεῖνονekeinonthat τάραχοςtarachosdisturbance οὐκoukvvv ὀλίγοςoligosa great περὶperiabout τῆςtēsthe ὉδοῦHodouWay .
24ΔημήτριοςDēmētriosDemetrius γάρgar[ It began with] τιςtisa ὀνόματιonomatinamed ἀργυροκόποςargyrokopossilversmith ποιῶνpoiōnwho made ναοὺςnaousshrines ἀργυροῦςargyroussilver ἈρτέμιδοςArtemidosof Artemis , παρείχετοpareichetobringing τοῖςtoisto the τεχνίταιςtechnitaiscraftsmen . ἐργασίανergasianbusiness οὐκoukvvv ὀλίγηνoligēnmuch
25οὓςhousvvv συναθροίσαςsynathroisas[Demetrius] assembled [the craftsmen] , καὶkaialong with τοὺςtousthe περὶperiin τὰtarelated τοιαῦταtoiautatrades . ἐργάταςergatasworkmen εἶπενeipenhe said , ἌνδρεςAndres“ Men , ” ἐπίστασθεepistasthe“ you know ὅτιhotithat ἐκek- ταύτηςtautēsthis τῆςtēs- ἐργασίαςergasiasbusiness [source of] εὐπορίαeuporiaprosperity . ἡμῶνhēmōnour ἐστίestiI have
26καὶkaiand θεωρεῖτεtheōreiteyou can see καὶkaiand ἀκούετεakouetehear ὅτιhotithat οὐounot μόνονmonononly ἘφέσουEphesouin Ephesus , ἀλλὰallabut in σχεδὸνschedonnearly πάσηςpasēsthe whole τῆςtēs- ἈσίαςAsias[province of] Asia , ho- ΠαῦλοςPaulosPaul οὗτοςhoutos- πείσαςpeisashas persuaded μετέστησενmetestēsento turn away . ἱκανὸνhikanona great number ὄχλονochlonof people λέγωνlegōnHe says ὅτιhotithat οὐκoukno εἰσὶeisiare θεοὶtheoigods [at all] . οἱhoi- διὰdia. . . χειρῶνcheirōn. . . γινόμενοιginomenoiman-made [gods]
27οὐounot μόνονmonononly δὲde- τοῦτοtouto[that] κινδυνεύειkindyneuei[There is] danger ἡμῖνhēminour τὸto- μέροςmerosbusiness εἰςeisinto ἀπελεγμὸνapelegmondisrepute , ἐλθεῖνeltheinwill fall ἀλλὰallabut καὶkaialso [that] τὸtothe τῆςtēsof the μεγάληςmegalēsgreat θεᾶςtheasgoddess ἈρτέμιδοςArtemidosArtemis ἱερὸνhierontemple εἰςeisinto οὐθὲνouthen. . . λογισθῆναιlogisthēnaiwill be discredited μέλλεινmellein- τεteand καὶkai- καθαιρεῖσθαιkathaireisthaideposed — τὴνtēn. . . μεγαλειότηταmegaleiotetamajesty αὐτῆςautēsher ἣνhēn[she] who ὅληholēby all - ἈσίαAsia[ the province of ] Asia καὶkaiand the [whole] οἰκουμένηoikoumenēworld . ” σέβεταιsebetaiis worshiped
28ἈκούσαντεςAkousantes[the men] heard [this] , δὲde[When] καὶkai- γενόμενοιgenomenoithey were πλήρειςplēreisvvv θυμοῦthymouenraged ἔκραζονekrazon[and] began shouting λέγοντεςlegontes. . . , ΜεγάληMegalē“ Great [is] - ἌρτεμιςArtemisArtemis ἘφεσίωνEphesiōnof [the] Ephesians ! ”
29καὶkai[Soon] ἐπλήσθηeplēsthēvvv the πόλιςpoliscity τῆςtēswhole συγχύσεωςsynchyseōswas in disarray . ὥρμησάνhōrmēsanThey rushed τεte- ὁμοθυμαδὸνhomothymadontogether εἰςeisinto τὸtothe θέατρονtheatrontheatre , συναρπάσαντεςsynarpasantesdragging with [them] ΓάϊονGaionGaius καὶkaiand ἈρίσταρχονAristarchonAristarchus , Μακεδόνα,makedonafrom Macedonia . συνεκδήμουςsynekdēmoustraveling companions ΠαύλουPaulouPaul’s
30τοῦtouthe δὲde- ΠαύλουPaulouPaul βουλομένουboulomenouwanted εἰσελθεῖνeiseltheinto go before εἰςeis. . . τὸνtonthe δῆμονdēmonassembly , οὐκoukvvv εἴωνeiōnwould not allow αὐτὸνautonhim . οἱhoi[but] the μαθηταίmathētaidisciples
31τινὲςtinessome δὲde- καὶkaiEven τῶνtōnof ἈσιαρχῶνAsiarchōnofficials of [the province of] Asia ὄντεςonteswho were αὐτῷautō[Paul’s] φίλοιphiloifriends πέμψαντεςpempsantessent word πρὸςprosto him , αὐτὸνautonhim παρεκάλουνparekalounbegging μὴnot δοῦναιdounaito venture ἑαυτὸνheauton- εἰςeisinto τὸtothe θέατρονtheatrontheatre .
32ἌλλοιAlloi[and some another] , μὲνmen. . . οὖνounMeanwhile ἄλλοalloSome τιtione thing ἔκραζονekrazonwere shouting ἦνēnwas γὰρgar. . . the ἐκκλησίαekklēsiaassembly συγκεχυμένηsynkechymenēin turmoil . καὶkaiand οἱhoi- πλείουςpleiousmost [of them] οὐκoukvvv ᾔδεισανēdeisandid not [even] know τίνοςtinoswhy ἕνεκενhenekenfor My sake συνεληλύθεισανsynelēlytheisanthey were there .
33ἐκekin δὲde- τοῦtouthe ὄχλουochloucrowd προεβίβασανproebibasan{forward} to explain himself , ἈλέξανδρονAlexandronAlexander προβαλόντωνprobalontōnpushed αὐτὸνauton- τῶνtōnThe ἸουδαίωνIoudaiōnJews ho- δὲdeand ἈλέξανδροςAlexandros[he] κατασείσαςkataseisasmotioned for silence τὴνtēn. . . χεῖραcheira. . . ἤθελενēthelenso he ἀπολογεῖσθαιapologeisthaicould make [his] defense τῷto the δήμῳdēmōpeople .
34ἐπιγνόντεςepignonteswhen they realized δὲdeBut ὅτιhotithat ἸουδαῖόςIoudaiosa Jew , ἐστίestiI have φωνὴphōnēthey all shouted in unison ἐγένετοegeneto. . . μίαmia. . . ἐκek. . . πάντωνpantōn. . . ὡςhōsabout ἐπὶepifor ὥραςhōrashours δύοdyotwo κραζόντων*krazontōn- : ΜεγάληMegalē“ Great [is] - ἌρτεμιςArtemisArtemis ἘφεσίωνEphesiōnof [the] Ephesians ! ”
35ΚαταστείλαςKatasteilasquieted δὲdeFinally hothe γραμματεὺςgrammateuscity clerk τὸνtonthe ὄχλονochloncrowd φησίνphēsin[and] declared , ἌνδρεςAndres“ Men ἘφέσιοιEphesioi[of] Ephesus , τίςtisthat γάρgar- ἐστινestin. . . ἄνθρωποςanthrōposman ὩςHōsAfter οὐounot γινώσκειginōskeiknow τὴνtēnthe ἘφεσίωνEphesiōnof Ephesus πόλινpolincity νεωκόρονneōkoronguardian of the temple οὖσανousanis τῆςtēsof the μεγάληςmegalēsgreat θεᾶςtheasgoddess ἈρτέμιδοςArtemidosArtemis καὶkai- τοῦtouthe διοπετοῦςdiopetouswhich fell from heaven ?
36ἀναντιρρήτωνanantirrētōnundeniable , οὖνounSince ὄντωνontōnare τούτωνtoutōnthese things δέονdeonought ἐστὶνestinvvv ὑμᾶςhymasyou κατεσταλμένουςkatestalmenouscalm ὑπάρχεινhyparcheinto be καὶkaiand μηδὲνmēdenvvv προπετὲςpropetesrash . πράσσεινprasseinnot do anything
37ἠγάγετεēgageteyou have brought γὰρgarFor τοὺςtous- ἄνδραςandrasmen {here} , τούτουςtoutousthese οὔτεoute[though they have] neither ἱεροσύλουςhierosylousrobbed [our] temple οὔτεoutenor βλασφημοῦνταςblasphēmountasblasphemed τὴνtēn- θεὰνtheanGod . ὑμῶνhymōnyour
38ΕἰEiif μὲνmen- οὖνounSo ΔημήτριοςDēmētriosDemetrius καὶkaiand οἱhoivvv σὺνsynvvv αὐτῷautōhis fellow τεχνῖταιtechnitaicraftsmen ἔχουσιechousihave πρόςprosagainst τιναtinaanyone , λόγονlogona complaint ἀγοραῖοιagoraioi[the] courts ἄγονταιagontaiare open καὶkaiand ἀνθύπατοίanthypatoiproconsuls εἰσινeisinare available . ἐγκαλείτωσανenkaleitōsanLet them bring charges against ἀλλήλοιςallēloisone another [ there ] .
39εἰeiif δέdeBut τιtianything περὶperifor ἕτερονheteronSome ἐπιζητεῖτεepizēteiteyou are seeking ἐνenin τῇa ἐννόμῳennomōlegal ἐκκλησίᾳekklēsiaassembly . ἐπιλυθήσεταιepilythēsetaiit must be settled
40καὶkaiFor γὰρgarvvv κινδυνεύομενkindyneuomenwe are in jeopardy of ἐγκαλεῖσθαιenkaleisthaibeing charged στάσεωςstaseōswith rioting περὶperifor τῆςtēs- σήμερονsēmerontoday’s [events] , μηδενὸςmēdenosno αἰτίουaitioujustification ὑπάρχοντοςhyparchontosvvv περὶperifor οὗhouvvv δυνησόμεθαdynēsometha[and] we have ἀποδοῦναιapodounai. . . λόγονlogonto account τῆςtēs- συστροφῆςsystrophēscommotion . ” ταύτηςtautēsthis
41ΚαὶKai[After] ταῦταtauta[this] , εἰπὼνeipōnhe had said ἀπέλυσεapelysedismissed τὴνtēnthe ἐκκλησίανekklēsianassembly .
