2οὗτοςhoutosHe ἔλθῃelthēshould come πρὸςprosto αὐτὸνauton[Jesus] νυκτὸςnyktosat night καὶkaiand εἶπενeipensaid αὐτῷautō- , ῬαββίRhabbi“ Rabbi , οἴδαμενoidamenwe know ὅτιhotithat ἀπὸapofrom ΘεοῦTheouGod . ἐλήλυθαςelēlythaswho has come διδάσκαλοςdidaskalos[You are] a teacher οὐδεὶςoudeisno one γὰρgarFor ταῦταtauta[the] τὰta- σημεῖαsēmeiasigns δύναταιdynataicould ποιεῖνpoieinperform ἃha- σὺsyYou ποιεῖςpoieisare doing ἐὰνeanif μὴmēnot ᾖēwere ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod μετ’met’with αὐτοῦautouhim . ”

6τὸto- γεγεννημένονgegennēmenonborn ἐκekof τῆςtēs- σαρκὸςsarkosflesh , σάρξsarxFlesh ἐστινestinis καὶkaiand τὸto- γεγεννημένονgegennēmenonborn ἐκekof τοῦtouthe ΠνεύματοςPneumatosSpirit . πνεῦμάpneumaspirit ἐστι.estiis
7μὴmēvvv θαυμάσῃςthaumasēsDo not be amazed ὅτιhotithat εἶπόνeiponI said σοιsoi- , ΔεῖDeimust ὑμᾶςhymas‘ You γεννηθῆναιgennēthēnaibe born ἄνωθενanōthenagain . ’
8τὸtoThe πνεῦμαpneumawind ὅπουhopouwhere θέλειtheleiit wishes . πνεῖpneiblows καὶkai- τὴνtēn- φωνὴνphōnēnsound , αὐτοῦautouits ἀκούειςakoueisYou hear ἀλλ’all’but οὐκoukvvv οἶδαςoidasyou do not know πόθενpothenwhere ἔρχεταιerchetaiit comes {from} καὶkai[or] ποῦpouwhere ὑπάγειhypageiit is going . οὕτωςhoutōsSo ἐστὶestiis πᾶςpaswith everyone ὁho- γεγεννημένοςgegennēmenosborn ἐκekof τοῦtouthe ΠνεύματοςPneumatosSpirit . ”

10ἈπεκρίθηApekrithēasked ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus καὶkai. . . εἶπενeipen. . . αὐτῷautō. . . , ΣὺSy“ You εἶeiare ὁho- διδάσκαλοςdidaskalosteacher , ” τοῦtou- ἸσραὴλIsraēlIsrael’s καὶkai. . . ταῦταtautathese things ? οὐouvvv γινώσκειςginōskeisyou do not understand
11ἀμὴνamēnTruly , ἀμὴνamēnTruly , λέγωlegōI tell σοιsoiyou , ὅτιhoti- ὃhoof what οἴδαμενoidamenwe know , λαλοῦμενlaloumenwe speak καὶkaiand ὃhoto what ἑωράκαμενheōrakamenwe have seen , μαρτυροῦμενmartyroumenwe testify καὶkaiand τὴνtēn- μαρτυρίανmartyriantestimony . ἡμῶνhēmōnour οὐouvvv λαμβάνετεlambaneteyou people do not accept
12ΕἰEiIf τὰtathings ἐπίγειαepigeiaearthly εἶπονeiponI have told ὑμῖνhyminyou {about} καὶkaiand οὐouvvv πιστεύετεpisteueteyou do not believe , πῶςpōshow ἐὰνeanif εἴπωeipōI tell ὑμῖνhyminyou {about} τὰtathings ? ἐπουράνιαepouraniaheavenly πιστεύσετεpisteusetewill you believe
13καὶkaiand οὐδεὶςoudeisNo one ἀναβέβηκενanabebēkenhas ascended εἰςeisinto τὸνton- οὐρανὸνouranonheaven εἰeiexcept μὴmē. . . ὁhothe [One who] ἐκekfrom τοῦtou- οὐρανοῦouranouheaven — καταβάςkatabasdescended ὁhothe [One who] ΥἱὸςHuiosSon τοῦtou- ἀνθρώπουanthrōpouof Man . ὁhothe ὤνōnwhen he is ἮνĒnthere was τὸto- οὐρανῷouranōheaven .
14καὶkaiand καθὼςkathōsas ΜωϋσῆςMōusēsMoses ὕψωσεupsosehas exalted τὸνtonthe ὄφινophinsnake ἐνenin τῇtēthe ἐρήμῳerēmōwilderness , οὕτωςhoutōsso ὑψωθῆναιhypsōthēnaibe lifted up , δεῖdeimust τὸνtonthe ΥἱὸνHuionSon τοῦtou- ἀνθρώπουanthrōpouof Man
15ἵναhinathat πᾶςpaseveryone ὁhowho πιστεύωνpisteuōnbelieves εἰςeisin αὐτὸνautonHim μὴmēvvv ἀπόληταιapolētaishall not perish ἀλλ’all’but ἔχῃechēhave ζωὴνzōēnlife . αἰώνιονaiōnioneternal
16Οὕτωouto[this] γὰρgarFor ἠγάπησενēgapēsenloved ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod τὸνtonthe κόσμονkosmonworld ὥστεhōstethat τὸνton[His] ΥἱὸνHuionSon , αὐτοῦautouHim . τὸνtonthe μονογενῆmonogenēone and only ἔδωκενedōkenHe gave ἵναhinathat πᾶςpaseveryone ὁhowho πιστεύωνpisteuōnbelieves εἰςeisin αὐτὸνautonHim μὴmēvvv ἀπόληταιapolētaishall not perish ἀλλ’all’but ἔχῃechēhave ζωὴνzōēnlife . αἰώνιονaiōnioneternal
17οὐou{did} not γὰρgarFor ἀπέστειλενapesteilensend ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod τὸνton- ΥἱὸνHuionHis Son αὐτοῦautouHim . εἰςeisin τὸνtonthe κόσμονkosmonworld , ἵναhinato κρίνῃkrinēcondemn τὸνtonthe κόσμονkosmonworld , ἀλλ’all’but ἵναhinato σωθῇsōthēsave ὁhothe κόσμοςkosmosworld δι’di’through αὐτοῦautouHim .
18ὁhoWhoever πιστεύωνpisteuōnbelieves εἰςeisin αὐτὸνautonHim οὐouvvv κρίνεταιkrinetaiis not condemned , ὁhowhoever ‹δὲ›debut μὴmēvvv πιστεύωνpisteuōndoes not believe ἤδηēdēvvv κέκριταιkekritaihas already been condemned , ὅτιhotibecause μὴmēvvv πεπίστευκενpepisteukenhe has not believed εἰςeisin τὸtothe ὄνομαonomaname τοῦtou- μονογενοῦςmonogenousone and only ΥἱοῦHuiouSon . τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God’s
19ΑὕτηHautēthis δέdeAnd ἐστινestinis ἡhēthe κρίσιςkrisisverdict ὅτιhoti- : τὸtoThe φῶςphōsLight ἐλήλυθενelēlythenhas come εἰςeisinto τὸνtonthe κόσμονkosmonworld , καὶkaibut ἠγάπησανēgapēsanloved οἱhoi- ἄνθρωποιanthrōpoimen μᾶλλονmallonrather τὸtothe σκότοςskotosdarkness ἢēthan τὸtothe φῶςphōsLight ἦνēnwere γὰρgar- πονηρὰponēraevil . αὐτῶνautōntheir τὰta- ἔργαergadeeds
20πᾶςpasEveryone γὰρgar- ὁhowho φαῦλαphaulaevil πράσσωνprassōndoes μισεῖmiseihates τὸtothe φῶςphōsLight , καὶkaiand οὐκouk{does} not ἔρχεταιerchetaicome πρὸςprosinto τὸtothe φῶςphōsLight ἵναhinafor fear that μὴmē. . . ἐλεγχθῇelenchthēwill be exposed . τὰta- ἔργαergadeeds αὐτοῦautouhis
21ὁhowhoever δὲdeBut ποιῶνpoiōnpractices τὴνtēnthe ἀλήθειανalētheiantruth ἔρχεταιerchetaicomes πρὸςprosinto τὸtothe φῶςphōsLight , ἵναhinaso that φανερωθῇphanerōthēit may be seen clearly αὐτοῦautou[what] he τὰta- ἔργαergahas done ὅτιhotithat ἐνenin ΘεῷTheōGod .” ἐστινestinhas been εἰργασμέναeirgasmenaaccomplished
22ΜετὰMetaAfter ταῦταtautathis , ἦλθενēlthenwent ὁho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus καὶkaiand οἱhoi- μαθηταὶmathētaidisciples αὐτοῦautouHis εἰςeisinto τὴνtēnthe ἸουδαίανIoudaianJudean γῆνgēncountryside , καὶkai- ἐκεῖekei[where] διέτριβενdietribenHe spent some time μετ’met’with αὐτῶνautōnthem καὶkaiand ἐβάπτιζενebaptizenbaptized .
23ἮνĒnwas δὲdeNow καὶkaiand ἸωάννηςIōannēsJohn βαπτίζωνbaptizōnbaptizing ἐνenat ΑἰνὼνAinōnAenon ἐγγὺςengysnear τοῦtou- ΣαλείμSaleimSalim , ὅτιhotibecause ὕδαταhydata[the] water πολλὰpollaplentiful ἦνēnwas ἐκεῖekeithere , καὶkaiand παρεγίνοντοpareginonto[people] kept coming καὶkai- ἐβαπτίζοντοebaptizontoto be baptized .
24οὔπωoupō{had} not yet γὰρgar(For ἦνēnbeen βεβλημένοςbeblēmenosthrown εἰςeisinto τὴνtēn- φυλακὴνphylakēnprison .) ‹ὁ›ho- ἸωάννηςIōannēsJohn
25ἘγένετοEgenetoarose οὖνounThen ζήτησιςzētēsisa dispute ἐκekbetween τῶνtōn- μαθητῶνmathētōndisciples ἸωάννουIōannouJohn’s μετὰmeta[and] ἸουδαίουIoudaiou[a certain] Jew περὶperiover [the issue of] καθαρισμοῦkatharismouceremonial washing .
26καὶkaiSo ἦλθονēlthon[John’s disciples] came πρὸςprosto τὸνton- ἸωάννηνIōannēn[him] καὶkaiand εἶπονeiponI said αὐτῷautōhim ῬαββίRhabbiRabbi , ὃςhosthe [One who] ἦνēnwas μετὰmetawith σοῦsouyou πέρανperanbeyond τοῦtouthe ἸορδάνουIordanouJordan , ᾧhōthe One σὺsyyou μεμαρτύρηκαςmemartyrēkastestified about — ἴδεide“ Look , οὗτοςhoutosHe βαπτίζειbaptizeiis baptizing , καὶkaiand πάντεςpanteseveryone ἔρχονταιerchontaiis going πρὸςprosto αὐτόνautonHim . ”
27ἈπεκρίθηApekrithēreplied ἸωάννηςIōannēsJohn καὶkai. . . εἶπενeipen. . . , ΟὐOuvvv δύναταιdynataican ἄνθρωποςanthrōpos“ A man λαμβάνεινlambaneinreceive οὐδὲνouden. . . ἐὰνean. . . μὴmē. . . ᾖēis δεδομένονdedomenongiven αὐτῷautōhim ἐκekfrom τοῦtou- οὐρανοῦouranouheaven .
28αὐτοὶautoiyourselves ὑμεῖςhymeisYou μοιmoi- μαρτυρεῖτεmartyreitecan testify ὅτιhotithat εἶπονeiponI said ΟὐκOuknot εἰμὶeimiam ἐγὼegō‘ I ὁhothe ΧριστόςChristosChrist , ἀλλ’all’but ὅτιhoti- ἈπεσταλμένοςApestalmenossent εἰμὶeimiam ἔμπροσθενemprosthenahead of ἐκείνουekeinouHim . ’
29ὉHObelongs to ἔχωνechōn. . . τὴνtēnThe νύμφηνnymphēnbride νυμφίοςnymphios[the] bridegroom . ἐστίνestin. . . ὉHObelongs to δὲde- φίλοςphilosfriend τοῦtouof the νυμφίουnymphioubridegroom ὁho- ἑστηκὼςhestēkōsstands καὶkaiand ἀκούωνakouōnlistens for αὐτοῦautouhim , χαρᾷchara. . . χαίρειchairei[and] is overjoyed διὰdia[to hear] τὴνtēnthe φωνὴνphōnēnvoice . τοῦtouvvv νυμφίουnymphioubridegroom’s αὕτηhautē. . . οὖνounThat ἡhē- χαρὰcharajoy ἡhē- ἐμὴemē[is] mine , πεπλήρωταιpeplērōtai[and] it is now complete .
30ἐκεῖνονekeinonHe δεῖdeimust αὐξάνεινauxaneinincrease ; ἐμὲemeI δὲde- ἐλαττοῦσθαιelattousthai[must] decrease .
31ὉHoThe [One who] ἄνωθενanōthenfrom above ἐρχόμενοςerchomenoscomes ἐπάνωepanōabove πάντωνpantōnall . ἐστίνestinis ὁhoThe [one who] ὢνōnis ἐκekfrom τῆςtēsthe γῆςgēsearth ἐκekto τῆςtēsthe γῆςgēsearth ἐστινestinbelongs καὶkaiand ἐκekfrom τῆςtēsthe γῆςgēsearth . λαλεῖlaleispeaks [as one] ὁhoThe [One who] ἐκekfrom τοῦtou- οὐρανοῦouranouheaven ἐρχόμενοςerchomenoscomes ἐπάνωepanōabove πάντωνpantōnall . ἐστί,estiis
32καὶkaiand ὃhowhat ἑώρακενheōrakenHe has seen καὶkaiand ἤκουσενēkousenheard , τοῦτοtoutoto μαρτυρεῖmartyreiHe testifies καὶkaiand τὴνtēn- μαρτυρίανmartyriantestimony . αὐτοῦautouHis οὐδεὶςoudeisno one λαμβάνειlambaneiaccepts
33ὁhoWhoever λαβὼνlabōnaccepts αὐτοῦautouHis τὴνtēn- μαρτυρίανmartyriantestimony ἐσφράγισενesphragisenhas certified ὅτιhotithat ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod ἀληθήςalēthēstruthful . ἐστινestinis
34ὃνhonthe [One] γὰρgarFor ἀπέστειλενapesteilenhas sent ὁhowhom ΘεὸςTheosGod τὰtathe ῥήματαrhēmatawords τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , λαλεῖlaleispeaks οὐouwithout γὰρgarfor ἐκek. . . μέτρουmetroulimit . δίδωσινdidōsin[God] gives ὉHoThe ΘεὸςTheosGod τὸtothe ΠνεῦμαPneumaSpirit
35ὉHoThe ΠατὴρPatērFather ἀγαπᾷagapaloves τὸνtonthe ΥἱόνHuionSon καὶkaiand πάνταpantaall things δέδωκενdedōkenhas placed ἐνenin τῇtē- χειρὶcheirihands . αὐτοῦautouHis
36ὁhoWhoever πιστεύωνpisteuōnbelieves εἰςeisin τὸνtonthe ΥἱὸνHuionSon ἔχειecheihas ζωὴνzōēnlife . αἰώνιονaiōnioneternal ὁhoWhoever δὲde- ἀπειθῶνapeithōnrejects τῷtōthe ΥἱῷHuiōSon οὐκoukvvv ὄψεταιopsetaiwill not see ζωήνzōēnlife . ἀλλ’all’Instead , ἡhēthe ὀργὴorgēwrath τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God μένειmeneiremains ἐπ’ep’on αὐτόνautonhim .”
