1ἼδετεIdeteBehold ποταπὴνpotapēnwhat manner of ἀγάπηνagapēnlove δέδωκενdedōkenhas given ἡμῖνhēminto us , ὁhothe ΠατὴρPatērFather ἵναhinathat τέκναteknachildren ΘεοῦTheouof God . κληθῶμενklēthōmenwe should be called διὰdiaThe reason τοῦτοtouto. . . ὁhothe κόσμοςkosmosworld οὐouvvv γινώσκειginōskeidoes not know ἡμᾶςhēmasus ὅτιhoti[is] that οὐκoukvvv ἔγνωegnōit did not know αὐτόνautonHim .
2ἈγαπητοίAgapētoiBeloved , νῦνnynnow τέκναteknachildren ΘεοῦTheouof God , ἐσμενesmenwe are καὶkaiand οὔπωoupō{has} not yet ἐφανερώθηephanerōthēbeen revealed . τίtiwhat ἐσόμεθαesomethawe will be οἴδαμενoidamenWe know δὲdewhile ὅτιhotiBecause ἐὰνeanif φανερωθῇphanerōthē[Christ] appears , ὅμοιοιhomoioilike αὐτῷautōHim , ἐσόμεθαesomethawe will be ὅτιhotifor ὀψόμεθαopsomethawe will see αὐτὸνautonHim καθώςkathōsas ἐστίestiI have
3καὶkaiAnd πᾶςpaseveryone ὁhowho ἔχωνechōnhas τὴνtēn- ἐλπίδαelpidahope ταύτηνtautēnthis ἐπ’ep’in αὐτῷautōHim ἁγνίζειhagnizeipurifies ἑαυτὸνheautonhimself , καθὼςkathōsjust as ἐκεῖνοςekeinos[ Christ ] ἁγνόςhagnospure . ἐστίestiI have
4ΠᾶςPasEveryone ὁhowho ποιῶνpoiōnpractices τὴνtēn- ἁμαρτίανhamartiansin καὶkaias well . τὴνtēn- ἀνομίανanomianlawlessness ποιεῖpoieipractices καὶkaias well . ἡhē- ἁμαρτίαhamartiasin ἐστὶνestinis ἡhē- ἀνομίαanomialawlessness .
5καὶkai[But] οἴδατεoidateyou know ὅτιhotithat ἐκεῖνοςekeinos[Christ] ἐφανερώθηephanerōthēappeared ἵναhinato τὰςtas- ἁμαρτίαςhamartiassins , ἡμῶνhēmōnus , ἄρῃarētake away καὶkaiand ἁμαρτίαhamartiasin . ἐνenin αὐτῷautōHim οὐκoukno ἐστίestiI have
6πᾶςpasNo one ὁhowho ἐνenin αὐτῷautōHim μένωνmenōnremains οὐχouch. . . ἁμαρτάνειhamartaneikeeps on sinning . πᾶςpasNo one ὁhowho ἁμαρτάνωνhamartanōncontinues to sin οὐχouch. . . ἑώρακενheōrakenhas seen αὐτὸνautonHim οὐδὲoude[or] ἔγνωκενegnōkenknown αὐτόνautonHim .
7ΤεκνίαTekniaLittle children , μηδεὶςmēdeis{let} no one πλανάτωplanatōdeceive ὑμᾶςhymasyou : ὁhoThe [one who] ποιῶνpoiōnpractices τὴνtēn- δικαιοσύνηνdikaiosynēnrighteousness δίκαιόςdikaiosrighteous , ἐστίestiI have καθὼςkathōsjust as ἐκεῖνοςekeinos[Christ] δίκαιόςdikaiosrighteous . ἐστινestinis
8ὁhoThe [one who] ποιῶνpoiōnpractices τὴνtēn- ἁμαρτίανhamartiansin ἐκekof τοῦtouthe διαβόλουdiaboloudevil , ἐστίνestinis ὅτιhotibecause ἀπ’ap’from ἀρχῆςarchēs[the] very start . ὁhothe διάβολοςdiabolosdevil ἁμαρτάνειhamartaneihas been sinning εἰςeisThis is why τοῦτοtouto. . . ἐφανερώθηephanerōthēwas revealed , ὁhothe ΥἱὸςHuiosSon τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God ἵναhinato λύσῃlysēdestroy τὰtathe ἔργαergaworks τοῦtouof the διαβόλουdiaboloudevil .
9ΠᾶςPasAnyone ὁho- γεγεννημένοςgegennēmenosborn ἐκekof τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod ἁμαρτίανhamartiansin , οὐouvvv ποιεῖpoieirefuses to practice ὅτιhotibecause σπέρμαspermaseed αὐτοῦautou[God’s] ἐνenin αὐτῷautōhim ; μένειmeneiabides καὶkai- οὐouvvv δύναταιdynataihe cannot ἁμαρτάνεινhamartaneingo on sinning , ὅτιhotibecause ἐκekof τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod . γεγέννηταιgegennētaihe has been born
10ἐνenBy τούτῳtoutōthis φανεράphaneradistinguished ἐστίestiI have τὰta[from] the τέκναteknachildren τοῦtouof the ΘεοῦTheouof God καὶkai- τὰta[from] the τέκναteknachildren τοῦtouof the διαβόλουdiaboloudevil : πᾶςpasAnyone ὁhowho μὴmēvvv ποιῶνpoiōndoes not practice δικαιοσύνηνdikaiosynēnrighteousness οὐκouknot ἔστινestinis ἐκekof τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod , καὶkai[nor is] ὁhoanyone who μὴmēvvv ἀγαπῶνagapōndoes not love τὸνton- ἀδελφὸνadelphonbrother . αὐτοῦautouhis
11ὍτιHoti- αὕτηhautēThis ἐστὶνestinis ἡhēthe ἀγγελίαangeliamessage ἣνhēn- ἠκούσατεēkousateyou have heard ἀπ’ap’from ἀρχῆςarchēs[the] beginning : ἵναhina- ἀγαπῶμενagapōmenWe should love ἀλλήλουςallēlousone another .
12οὐou[Do] not [be] καθὼςkathōslike ΚάϊνKainCain , ἐκek. . . τοῦtouthe πονηροῦponērouevil [one] ἦνēn[who] belonged to καὶkaiand ἔσφαξεesphaxemurdered τὸνton- ἀδελφὸνadelphonbrother . αὐτοῦautouhis καὶkaiand χάρινcharinwhy τίνοςtinos. . . ἔσφαξενesphaxendid [Cain] slay αὐτόνautonhim ? ὅτιhotiBecause τὰta[own] ἔργαergadeeds αὐτοῦautouhis πονηρὰponēraevil , ἦνēnwere τὰta[own] δὲdewhile τοῦtouof ἀδελφοῦadelphoubrother αὐτοῦautouhis δίκαιαdikaia[were] righteous .
13ΜὴMē{do} not θαυμάζετεthaumazetebe surprised , ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , εἰeiif μισεῖmiseihates ὑμᾶςhymasyou . ὁhothe κόσμοςkosmosworld
14ἩμεῖςHēmeisWe οἴδαμενoidamenknow ὅτιhotithat μεταβεβήκαμενmetabebēkamenwe have passed ἐκekfrom τοῦtou- θανάτουthanatoudeath εἰςeisto τὴνtēn- ζωήνzōēnlife , ὅτιhotibecause ἀγαπῶμενagapōmenwe love τοὺςtous[our] ἀδελφούςadelphousbrothers . ὁhoThe [one who] μὴmēvvv ἀγαπῶνagapōndoes not love τὸνton- ἀδελφὸνadelphonbrother μένειmeneiremains ἐνenin τῷtō- θανάτῳthanatōdeath .
15πᾶςpasEveryone ὁhowho μισῶνmisōnhates τὸνton- ἀδελφὸνadelphonbrother αὐτοῦautouhis ἀνθρωποκτόνοςanthrōpoktonosa murderer , ἐστίestiI have καὶkaiand οἴδατεoidateyou know ὅτιhotithat πᾶςpasa ἀνθρωποκτόνοςanthrōpoktonosmurderer . οὐκouk{does} not ἔχειechei- ζωὴνzōēnlife αἰώνιονaiōnioneternal ἐνenin αὐτῷautō- μένουσανmenousanreside
16ἐνenin τούτῳtoutōthis ἐγνώκαμενegnōkamenwe know τὴνtēnwhat ἀγάπηνagapēnlove [is] ὅτιhoti- : ἐκεῖνοςekeinos[Jesus] ὑπὲρhyperfor ἡμῶνhēmōnus , τὴνtēn- ψυχὴνpsychēnlife αὐτοῦautouHis ἔθηκε·ethekelaid καὶkaiand ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe ὀφείλομενopheilomenought ὑπὲρhyperfor τῶνtōn[our] ἀδελφῶνadelphōnbrothers . τὰςtas[our] ψυχὰςpsychaslives τιθέναιtithenaito put
17ὃςhosanyone δ’d’- ἂνanIf ἔχῃechēwith τὸνton- βίονbionpossessions τοῦtou- κόσμουkosmouearthly καὶkai- θεωρῇtheōrēsees τὸνton- ἀδελφὸνadelphonbrother αὐτοῦautouhis χρείανchreianneed , ἔχονταechonta[in] καὶkai[but] κλείσῃkleisēwithholds τὰta- σπλάγχναsplanchnacompassion αὐτοῦautouhim , ἀπ’ap’from αὐτοῦautouhim , πῶςpōshow ἡhē{can} the ἀγάπηagapēlove τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God μένειmeneiabide ἐνenin αὐτῷautōhim ?
18ΤεκνίαTekniaLittle children , μουmoumy μὴmēnot ἀγαπῶμενagapōmenlet us love λόγῳlogōin word μηδὲmēde[and] τῇtē- γλώσσῃglōssēspeech , ἀλλ’all’- ἐνenin ἔργῳergōaction καὶkaiand ἀληθείᾳalētheiatruth .
19καὶkaiAnd ἐνenby τούτῳtoutōthis γινώσκομενginōskomenwe know ὅτιhotithat ἐκekby τῆςtēs- ἀληθείαςalētheiastruth , ἐσμένesmenwe belong to καὶkaiand ἔμπροσθενemprosthenin His presence αὐτοῦautou. . . : πείσομενpeisomenwill assure τὰςtas- καρδίαςkardiashearts , ἡμῶνhēmōnour
20ὅτιhoti- ἐὰνeanif καταγινώσκῃkataginōskēcondemn [us] , ἡμῶνhēmōnour ἡhē- καρδίαkardiahearts ὅτιhoti- μείζωνmeizōngreater than ἐστὶνestinis ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod τῆςtēs- καρδίαςkardiashearts , ἡμῶνhēmōnour καὶkaiand γινώσκειginōskeiHe knows πάνταpantaall things .
21ἈγαπητοίAgapētoiBeloved , ἐὰνeanif ἡhē- καρδίαkardiahearts ‹ἡμῶν›hēmōnour «μὴmēvvv καταγινώσκῃ»kataginōskēdo not condemn [us] , ‹ἡμῶν›hēmōnour παρρησίανparrēsianconfidence ἔχομενechomenwe have πρὸςprosbefore τὸνton- ΘεόνTheonGod ,
22καὶkaiand ὃhowhatever ἐὰνean. . . αἰτῶμενaitōmenwe ask , λαμβάνομενlambanomenwe will receive παρ’par’with αὐτοῦautouHim ὅτιhotibecause τὰςtas- ἐντολὰςentolascommandments αὐτοῦautouHis τηροῦμενtēroumenwe keep καὶkaiand τὰtawhat ἀρεστὰarestais pleasing ἐνώπιονenōpionin His sight αὐτοῦautou. . . . ποιοῦμενpoioumendo
23καὶkaiand αὕτηhautēthis ἐστὶνestinis ἡhē- ἐντολὴentolēcommandment : αὐτοῦautouHis ἵναhinathat πιστεύσωμενpisteusōmenwe should believe τῷtōin the ὀνόματιonomatiname τοῦtou- ΥἱοῦHuiouSon , αὐτοῦautouof His ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist , καὶkaiand ἀγαπῶμενagapōmenwe should love ἀλλήλουςallēlousone another καθὼςkathōsjust as ἔδωκενedōkenvvv ἐντολὴνentolēnHe commanded
24καὶkai- ὁhoWhoever τηρῶνtērōnkeeps τὰςtas- ἐντολὰςentolascommandments αὐτοῦautouHis ἐνenin αὐτῷautō[God] , μένειmeneiremains καὶkaiand αὐτὸςautos[God] ἐνenin αὐτῷautōhim . καὶkaiAnd ἐνenby τούτῳtoutōthis γινώσκομενginōskomenwe know ὅτιhotithat μένειmeneiHe remains ἐνenin ἡμῖνhēminus : ἐκekby τοῦtouthe ΠνεύματοςPneumatosSpirit οὗhou- ἡμῖνhēminus . ἔδωκενedōkenHe has given
