3εἶπονeiponsaid οὖνounSo πρὸςprosto αὐτὸνautonHim , οἱhoi- ἀδελφοὶadelphoibrothers αὐτοῦautou[Jesus’] ΜετάβηθιMetabēthi“ Leave ἐντεῦθενenteuthenhere καὶkaiand ὕπαγεhypagego εἰςeisto τὴνtēn- ἸουδαίανIoudaianJudea , ἵναhinaso that καὶkai[there] οἱhoi- μαθηταίmathētaidisciples σουsouYour θεωρήσωσιtheoresosimay see «τὰta- ἔργα»ergaworks σοῦsou[the] ἃha- ποιεῖςpoieisYou are doing .
4οὐδεὶςoudeisno one γάρgarFor ἐνenvvv κρυπτῷkryptōsecret . τιti. . . ποιεῖpoieiacts καὶkai- ζητεῖzēteiwants αὐτὸςautos[who] ἐνenvvv παρρησίᾳparrēsiapublicly εἶναιeinaito be [known] εἰeiSince ταῦταtautathese things , ποιεῖςpoieisYou are doing φανέρωσονphanerōsonshow σεαυτὸνseautonYourself τῷtōto the κόσμῳkosmōworld . ”
5οὐδὲoude[even] γὰρgarFor οἱhoi[own] ἀδελφοὶadelphoibrothers αὐτοῦautouHis ἐπίστευονepisteuondid {not} believe εἰςeisin αὐτόνautonHim .
6ΛέγειLegeitold οὖνounTherefore αὐτοῖςautoisthem , ὁho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ὁho- καιρὸςkairostime ὁho- ἐμὸςemosMy οὔπωoupō{has} not yet πάρεστινparestincome . ὁhoThe δὲdebut καιρὸςkairostime ὉHo- ὑμέτεροςhymeterosyour πάντοτέpantotealways ἐστινestinis ἕτοιμοςhetoimosat hand ,
7οὐouvvv δύναταιdynataicannot ὁhoThe κόσμοςkosmosworld μισεῖνmiseinhate ὑμᾶςhymasyou , ἐμὲemeMe , δὲdebut μισεῖmiseiit hates ὅτιhotibecause ἐγὼegōI μαρτυρῶmartyrōtestify περὶperi. . . αὐτοῦautou. . . ὅτιhotithat τὰta- ἔργαergaworks αὐτοῦautouits πονηράponēraevil . ἐστινestinare
8ὑμεῖςhymeison your own . ἀνάβητεanabēteGo up εἰςeisto τὴνtēnthe ἑορτήνheortēnfeast ταύτηνtautēnthis ἐγὼegōI οὔπωoupō{has} not yet ἀναβαίνωanabainōgoing up εἰςeisto τὴνtēn- ἑορτὴνheortēnfeast , ταύτηνtautēnthis ὅτιhotibecause ὁho- ἐμὸςemosMy καιρὸςkairostime οὔπωoupō{has} not yet πεπλήρωταιpeplērōtaicome . ”
9ΤαῦταTauta[this] δὲde- εἰπὼνeipōnHaving said αὐτοῖςautoisthem , ἔμεινενemeinen[Jesus] remained ἐνenin τῇtē- ΓαλιλαίᾳGalilaiaGalilee .
10ὩςHōs[after] δὲdeBut ἀνέβησανanebēsanhad gone up οἱhoi- ἀδελφοὶadelphoibrothers αὐτοῦautouHis τότεtote- καὶkaialso αὐτὸςautosHe ἀνέβηanebēwent — εἰςeisto τὴνtēnthe ἑορτήνheortēnfeast , οὐounot φανερῶςphanerōspublicly , ἀλλ’all’but ἐνenon κρυπτῷkryptōsecret .
11ΟἱHoithe οὖνounSo ἸουδαῖοιIoudaioiJews ἐζήτουνezētounwere looking for αὐτὸνautonHim ἐνenat τῇtēthe ἑορτῇheortēfeast καὶkaiand ἔλεγονelegonasking , ΠοῦPou“ Where ἐστινestinis ἐκεῖνοςekeinosHe ? ”
12καὶkai- γογγυσμὸςgongysmoswhispering πολὺςpolysMany περὶperiabout αὐτοῦautouHim . ἦνēnwere ἦνēnwere τοῖςtoisthe ὄχλοιςochloiscrowds οἱhoiSome μὲνmen- ἔλεγονelegonsaid , ὅτιhoti- ἈγαθόςAgathosa good [man] . ” ἐστινestin“ He is ἌλλοιAlloiothers ἔλεγονelegonreplied , ΟὔOu“ No ἀλλὰalla. . . , πλανᾷplanaHe deceives τὸνtonthe ὄχλονochlonpeople . ”
13ΟὐδεὶςOudeisno one μέντοιmentoiYet παρρησίᾳparrēsiapublicly ἐλάλειelaleiwould speak περὶperiabout αὐτοῦautouHim διὰdiafor τὸνton- φόβονphobonfear τῶνtōnof the ἸουδαίωνIoudaiōnJews .
14ἬδηĒdēvvv δὲdevvv τῆςtēsthe ἑορτῆςheortēsfeast , μεσούσηςmesousēsAbout halfway through ἀνέβηanebēwent up ‹ὁ›ho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus εἰςeisto τὸtothe ἱερὸνhierontemple [courts] καὶkaiand ἐδίδασκε.edidaskeHe taught
15ἐθαύμαζονethaumazonwere amazed οἱhoiThe ἸουδαῖοιIoudaioiJews λέγοντεςlegontes[and] asked , ΠῶςPōs“ How οὗτοςhoutos{did} this [man] γράμματαgrammata[such] learning οἶδεoideknows μὴmēwithout μεμαθηκώςmemathēkōshaving studied ? ”
16ἈπεκρίθηApekrithēreplied οὖνoun- αὐτοῖςautois. . . ‹ὁ›ho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus καὶkai. . . εἶπενeipen. . . . ἩHĒ- ἘμὴEmē“ My διδαχὴdidachēteaching οὐκouknot ἔστινestinis ἐμὴemēMy own , ” ἀλλὰalla“ [It comes] τοῦtoufrom Him who πέμψαντόςpempsantossent μεmeMe .
17ἐάνeanIf τιςtisanyone θέλῃthelēdesires τὸto- θέλημαthelēmawill , αὐτοῦautouHis ποιεῖνpoieinto do γνώσεταιgnōsetaihe will know περὶperi. . . τῆςtēs[My] διδαχῆςdidachēsteaching πότερονpoteronwhether ἐκekfrom τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod ἐστινestinis ἢēor [whether] ἐγὼegōI ἀπ’ap’on ἐμαυτοῦemautouMy own . λαλῶlalōspeak
18ὁhoHe who ἀφ’aph’on ἑαυτοῦheautouhis own [authority] λαλῶνlalōnspeaks τὴνtēn[his] δόξανdoxanglory , τὴνtēn- ἰδίανidianown ζητεῖzēteiseeks ὁhoHe who δὲdebut ζητῶνzētōnseeks τὴνtēnthe δόξανdoxanglory τοῦtouof the [One who] πέμψαντοςpempsantossent αὐτὸνautonHim οὗτοςhoutos- ἀληθήςalēthēsa man of truth ; ἐστινestinis καὶkai- ἀδικίαadikiafalsehood . ἐνenin αὐτῷautōHim οὐκoukno ἔστινestinthere is
19ΟὐOu{Has} not ΜωϋσῆςMōusēsMoses δέδωκεν*dedōkengiven ὑμῖνhyminyou τὸνtonthe νόμονnomonlaw ? καὶkaiYet οὐδεὶςoudeisnot one ἐξexof ὑμῶνhymōnyou ποιεῖpoieikeeps τὸνtonvvv νόμονnomon[it] . τίtiWhy μεmeMe ? ” ζητεῖτεzēteiteare you trying ἀποκτεῖναιapokteinaito kill
20ἈπεκρίθηApekrithēreplied . ὁhothe ὄχλοςochloscrowd καὶkai. . . εἰπὲeipesay ΔαιμόνιονDaimoniona demon , ” ἔχειςecheis“ You have τίςtis“ Who σεseYou ? ” ζητεῖzēteiis trying ἀποκτεῖναιapokteinaito kill

22ΜωϋσῆςMōusēsMoses δέδωκενdedōkengave ὑμῖνhyminyou τὴνtēn- περιτομήνperitomēncircumcision , οὐχouch(not ὅτιhotithat ἐκekfrom τοῦtou- ΜωϋσέωςMōuseōsMoses , ἐστὶνestinit is ἀλλ’all’but ἐκekfrom τῶνtōnthe πατέρωνpaterōnpatriarchs .) καὶkai- ἐνenon σαββάτῳsabbatō[the] Sabbath περιτέμνετεperitemneteyou circumcise ἄνθρωπονanthrōpona boy
23εἰeiIf περιτομὴνperitomēncan be circumcised λαμβάνειlambaneivvv ἄνθρωποςanthrōposa boy ἐνenon σαββάτῳsabbatō[the] Sabbath ἵναhinaso that μὴmē{will} not λυθῇlythēbe broken , ὁhothe νόμοςnomoslaw ΜωϋσέωςMōuseōsof Moses ἐμοὶemoiwith Me χολᾶτεcholate[why] are you angry ὅτιhotifor ὅλονholon[the] whole ἄνθρωπονanthrōponman ὑγιῆhygiēwell ἐποίησαepoiēsamaking ἐνenon σαββάτῳsabbatōthe Sabbath ?
24μὴmēStop κρίνετεkrinetejudging κατ’kat’by ὄψινopsinoutward appearances , ἀλλὰalla[and start] τὴνtēn- δικαίανdikaianjustly κρίσινkrisin. . . . ” κρίνατεkrinatejudge
25ἜλεγονElegonbegan to say , οὖνounThen τινεςtinessome ἐκekof τῶνtōnthe [people] ἹεροσολυμιτῶνHierosolymitōnof Jerusalem ΟὐχOuch. . . οὗτόςhoutosthis ἐστινestin“ Isn’t ὃνhon[the man] ζητοῦσινzētousinthey are trying ἀποκτεῖναιapokteinaito kill ?
26καὶkaiYet ἴδεidehere παρρησίᾳparrēsiapublicly , λαλεῖlaleiHe is, speaking καὶkaiand οὐδὲνouden[anything] αὐτῷautōto Him . λέγουσι.legousisay μήποτέmepotethat at not time, lest ever ἀληθῶςalēthōstruly ἔγνωσανegnōsanrecognized οἱhoi{Have} the ἄρχοντεςarchontesrulers ὅτιhotithat οὗτόςhoutosthis ἐστινestinis ἀληθῶςalēthōstruly ὁhothe ΧριστόςChristosChrist ?
27ἀλλὰallaBut τοῦτονtoutonthis [man] οἴδαμενoidamenwe know πόθενpothenwhere ἐστίνestinis {from} . ὁhothe δὲde- ΧριστὸςChristosChrist ὅτανhotanWhen ἔρχηταιerchētaicomes , οὐδεὶςoudeisno one γινώσκειginōskeiwill know πόθενpothenwhere ἐστίνestinHe is {from} . ”
28ἜκραξενEkraxencried out οὖνounThen ἐνenin τῷtōthe ἱερῷhierōtemple [courts] , διδάσκωνdidaskōnstill teaching ὁho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus , καὶkai. . . λέγωνlegōn. . . , ΚἀμὲKameMe , οἴδατεoidate“ You know καὶkaiand οἴδατεoidateyou know πόθενpothenwhere εἰμίeimiI am {from} . καὶkai- ἀπ’ap’of ἐμαυτοῦemautouMy own accord , οὐκoukvvv ἐλήλυθαelēlythaI have not come ἀλλ’all’but ἔστινestinis ἀληθινὸςalēthinostrue . ὁhoHe who πέμψαςpempsassent μεmeMe ὃνhonHim , ὑμεῖςhymeisYou οὐκouk{do} not οἴδατεoidateknow
29ἐγὼegōbut I οἶδαoidaknow αὐτόνautonHim , ὅτιhotibecause παρ’par’from αὐτοῦautouHim εἰμιeimiI am κἀκεῖνόςkakeinosand He μεmeMe . ” ἀπέστειλενapesteilensent
30ἘζήτουνEzētounthey tried οὖνounSo αὐτὸνautonHim , πιάσαιpiasaito seize καὶkaibut οὐδεὶςoudeisno one ἐπέβαλενepebalenlaid ἐπ’ep’on αὐτὸνautonHim , τὴνtēn- χεῖραcheiraa hand ὅτιhotibecause οὔπωoupō{had} not yet ἐληλύθειelēlytheicome . ἡhē- ὥραhōrahour αὐτοῦautouHis
31πολλοὶpolloiMany δὲdehowever , ἘκEkin τοῦtouthe ὄχλουochloucrowd , ἐπίστευσανepisteusanbelieved εἰςeisin αὐτόνautonHim καὶkaiand ἔλεγονelegonsaid , ὅτιhotibecause ὉHothe ΧριστὸςChristosChrist ὅτανhotan“ When ἔλθῃelthēcomes , ΜήτιMētivvv πλείοναpleionamore σημεῖαsēmeiasigns τοῦτονtoutonthis [man] ποιήσειpoiēseiwill He perform ὧνhōnthan οὗτοςhoutosthis [man] ἐποίησενepoiēsen- ? ”
32ἬκουσανĒkousanheard οἱhoi[When] the ΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioiPharisees τοῦtouthe ὄχλουochloucrowd γογγύζοντοςgongyzontoswhispering περὶperiabout αὐτοῦautou[Jesus] , ταῦταtautathese things καὶkai- ἀπέστειλανapesteilansent ὑπηρέταςhypēretasofficers οἱhoithe ΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioi[they] καὶkaiand οἱhoithe ἀρχιερεῖςarchiereischief priests ἵναhinato πιάσωσινpiasōsinarrest αὐτόνautonHim .
33εἶπενeipensaid , οὖνounSo ὁho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ἜτιEtionly μικρὸνmikrona little while χρόνονchrononlonger , μεθ’meth’with ὑμῶνhymōnyou εἰμιeimi“ I am καὶkaiand then ὑπάγωhypagōI am going πρὸςprosto τὸνtonthe [One who] πέμψαντάpempsantasent μεmeMe .
34ζητήσετέzētēseteYou will look for μεmeMe , καὶkai[but] οὐχouchvvv εὑρήσετέheurēseteyou will not find καὶkaiand ὅπουhopouwhere εἰμὶeimiam , ἐγὼegōI ὑμεῖςhymeisyou οὐouvvv δύνασθεdynasthecannot ἐλθεῖνeltheincome . ”
35ΕἶπονEiponsaid οὖνounAt this , οἱhoithe ἸουδαῖοιIoudaioiJews πρὸςprosto ἑαυτούςheautousone another , ΠοῦPou“ Where οὗτοςhoutos{does} He μέλλειmelleiintend πορεύεσθαιporeuesthaito go ὅτιhotithat ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe οὐχouchvvv εὑρήσομενheurēsomenwill not find αὐτόνautonHim μὴmēvvv ? εἰςeiswhere τὴνtēnthe [Jews] ΔιασπορὰνDiasporanare dispersed τῶνtōnamong the ἙλλήνωνHellēnōnGreeks , μέλλειmelleiWill He πορεύεσθαιporeuesthaigo καὶkaiand διδάσκεινdidaskeinteach τοὺςtousthe ἝλληναςHellēnasGreeks ?
36τίςtisWhat ἐστινestinvvv οὗτοςhoutosvvv ὁhovvv λόγοςlogosdoes He mean ὃνhonby εἰπὲeipesay ΖητήσετέZētēsete‘ You will look for μεmeMe , καὶkai[but] οὐχouchvvv εὑρήσετέheurēseteyou will not find καὶkaiand , ὍπουHopou‘ Where εἰμὶeimiam , ἐγὼegōI ὑμεῖςhymeisyou οὐouvvv δύνασθεdynasthecannot ἐλθεῖνeltheincome ’ ?”
37ἘνEnOn δὲde- τῇtēthe ἐσχάτῃeschatēlast ἡμέρᾳhēmeraday τῇtē[and] μεγάλῃmegalēgreatest τῆςtēsof the ἑορτῆςheortēsfeast , εἱστήκειheistēkeistood up ὁho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus καὶkaiand ἔκραξεekraxecried out λέγωνlegōn. . . , ἘάνEan“ If τιςtisanyone διψᾷdipsais thirsty , ἐρχέσθωerchesthōlet him come πρόςprosto μεmeMe καὶkaiand πινέτωpinetōdrink .
38ὁhoWhoever πιστεύωνpisteuōnbelieves εἰςeisin ἐμέemeMe , καθὼςkathōsas εἶπενeipenhas said : ἡhēthe γραφήgraphēScripture ΠοταμοὶPotamoi‘ Streams ἐκekfrom τῆςtēs- κοιλίαςkoilias[within] αὐτοῦautouhim . ’” ῥεύσουσινrheusousinwill flow ὕδατοςhydatoswater ζῶντοςzōntosof living
39τοῦτοtoutovvv δὲde- εἰπὲeipesay περὶperiabout τοῦtouthe ΠνεύματοςPneumatosSpirit , οὗhouwhom ἔμελλονemellonwere later λαμβάνεινlambaneinto receive . οἱhoithose who πιστεύσαντεςpisteusantesbelieved εἰςeisin αὐτόνautonHim οὔπωoupōnot yet [been given] , γὰρgarFor ἦνēnhad ΠνεῦμαPneuma[the] Spirit ἍγιονHagion“ [The] Holy ὅτιhotibecause ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus οὐδέπωoudepō{had} not yet ἐδοξάσθηedoxasthēbeen glorified .
40πολλοὶpolloiMany οὖνounSo ἘκEkin τοῦtouthe ὄχλουochloucrowd , ἀκούσαντεςakousantesOn hearing τῶνtōn- λόγωνlogōnwords , ἔλεγονelegonsaid , ΟὗτόςHoutos“ This ἐστινestinis ἀληθῶςalēthōstruly ὁhothe προφήτηςprophētēsProphet . ”
41ἌλλοιAlloiOthers ἔλεγονelegondeclared , ΟὗτόςHoutos“ This ἐστινestinis ὁhothe ΧριστόςChristosChrist . ” ΟἱHoistill others δὲdeBut ἔλεγονelegonasked , ΜὴMēvvv γὰρgar“ [How can] ἐκekfrom τῆςtēs- ΓαλιλαίαςGalilaiasGalilee ? ὁhothe ΧριστὸςChristosChrist ἔρχεταιerchetaicome
42ΟὐχίOuchi“ No ἡhēthe γραφὴgraphēScripture εἶπενeipensay ὅτιhotithat ἐκekfrom τοῦtouthe σπέρματοςspermatosline ΔαυὶδDauidof David καὶkaiand ἀπὸapofrom ΒηθλεὲμBēthleemBethlehem , τῆςtēsthe κώμηςkōmēsvillage ὅπουhopouwhere ἦνēnlived ? ” ΔαυὶδDauidDavid ὁhothe ΧριστόςChristosChrist ἔρχεταιerchetaiwill come
43ΣχίσμαSchismadivision οὖνounSo ἦνēnlived ? ” τῷtōthe ὄχλῳochlōcrowd ἐγένετοegenetothere was δι’di’because of αὐτόνauton[Jesus] .
44τινὲςtinesSome δὲde- ἤθελονēthelonwanted ἐξexof αὐτῶνautōnthem πιάσαιpiasaito seize αὐτόνautonHim , ἀλλ’all’but οὐδεὶςoudeisno one ἐπέβαλενepebalenlaid ἐπ’ep’on αὐτὸνautonHim . τὰςtas- χεῖραςcheirasa hand
45ἮλθονĒlthonreturned οὖνounThen οἱhoithe ὑπηρέταιhypēretaiofficers πρὸςprosto τοὺςtousthe ἀρχιερεῖςarchiereischief priests καὶkaiand ΦαρισαίουςPharisaiousPharisees , καὶkai- εἶπονeiponasked αὐτοῖςautoisthem , ἐκεῖνοιekeinoi[who] διατίdiatiwhy οὐκoukvvv ἠγάγετεēgagetedidn’t you bring αὐτόνautonHim {in} ? ”
46ἈπεκρίθησανApekrithēsananswered . οἱhoithe ὑπηρέταιhypēretaiofficers ΟὐδέποτεOudepote“ Never {has} οὕτωςhoutōs- ἐλάλησενelalēsenspoken ἄνθρωποςanthrōposanyone ὡςhōs- οὗτοςhoutos{did} this [man] ‹ὁ›ho- ἄνθρωποςanthrōposa boy
47ἈπεκρίθησανApekrithēsananswered . οὖνoun- αὐτοῖςautois- . οἱhoithe ΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioiPharisees μήmē“ {Have} καὶkaialso ὑμεῖςhymeis“ {Have} you πεπλάνησθεpeplanēsthebeen deceived ? ”
48ΜὴMēvvv τιςtisany ἐκekof τῶνtōnthe ἀρχόντωνarchontōnrulers ἐπίστευσενepisteusenbelieved εἰςeisin αὐτὸνautonHim ? ἢēor ἐκek- τῶνtōn- ΦαρισαίωνPharisaiōnPharisees
49ἀλλ’all’but ὁhothe ὄχλοςochloscrowd οὗτοςhoutosthis ὁho- μὴmēvvv γινώσκωνginōskōndoes not know τὸνtonthe νόμονnomonlaw , ἐπικατάρατοίepikataratoiunder a curse . ” εἰσι!eisiare
50ΛέγειLegeiasked ΝικόδημοςNikodēmosNicodemus , πρὸςprosto αὐτούςautous- , ὁho- ἐλθὼνelthōnhad gone νυκτὸςnyktosnight πρὸςprosto αὐτὸνauton[Jesus] εἷςheisone ὢνōn[and who himself] was ἐξexof αὐτῶνautōnthem ,
51ΜὴMēvvv ὁho- νόμοςnomoslaw ἡμῶνhēmōn“ {Does} our κρίνειkrineiconvict τὸνton- ἄνθρωπονanthrōpona man ἐὰνeanvvv μὴmēwithout ἀκούσῃakousēhearing παρ’par’from αὐτοῦautouhim πρότερονproteronearlier καὶkai- γνῷgnōto determine τίtiwhat ποιεῖpoieihe has done ? ”
52ἈπεκρίθησανApekrithēsanthey replied καὶkai. . . εἶπονeiponasked αὐτῷautō. . . . ΜὴMē. . . καὶkaialso σὺsyyou ἐκekfrom τῆςtēs- ΓαλιλαίαςGalilaiasGalilee ? ” εἶei“ Aren’t ἐρεύνησονereuneson“ Look into it , καὶkaialso ἴδεideyou will see ὅτιhotithat προφήτηςprophētēsprophet ἐκekout of τῆςtēs- ΓαλιλαίαςGalilaiasGalilee .” οὐκoukno ἐγήγερταιegēgertaihas risen
