1ΣὺSyYou οὖνountherefore , τέκνονteknonchild , μουmoumy ἐνδυναμοῦendynamoube strong ἐνenin τῇtēthe χάριτιcharitigrace τῇtēthat [is] ἐνenin ΧριστῷChristōChrist ἸησοῦIēsouJesus .
2καὶkaiAnd ἃhathe things that ἤκουσαςēkousasyou have heard παρ’par’vvv ἐμοῦemoume [say] διὰdiaamong πολλῶνpollōnmany μαρτύρωνmartyrōnwitnesses , ταῦταtautathese παράθουparathouentrust πιστοῖςpistoisto faithful ἀνθρώποιςanthrōpoismen οἵτινεςhoitineswho ἱκανοὶhikanoiqualified ἔσονταιesontaiwill be καὶkaias well . ἑτέρουςheterousothers διδάξαιdidaxaito teach
3σὺsyyou οὖνountherefore , κακοπάθησονkakopathēsonendure hardship , ὡςhōslike καλὸςkalos[a] good στρατιώτηςstratiōtēssoldier ἸησοῦIēsouJesus . ΧριστοῦChristouof Christ
4οὐδεὶςoudeisrefrains from στρατευόμενοςstrateuomenosA soldier ἐμπλέκεταιempleketaientangling himself ταῖςtaisin τοῦtouvvv βίουbiou[civilian] πραγματείαιςpragmateiaisaffairs , ἵναhinain order τῷtōthe [one who] στρατολογήσαντιstratologēsantienlisted him . ἀρέσῃaresēto please
5ἐὰνeanvvv δὲdeLikewise καὶkai. . . , ἀθλῇathlēcompetitor τιςtisa οὐouvvv στεφανοῦταιstephanoutaidoes not receive the crown ἐὰνeanunless μὴmē. . . νομίμωςnomimōsaccording to the rules . ἀθλήσῃathlēsēhe competes
6τὸνtonThe κοπιῶνταkopiōntahardworking γεωργὸνgeōrgonfarmer δεῖdeishould be πρῶτονprōtonthe first τῶνtōnof the καρπῶνkarpōncrops . μεταλαμβάνεινmetalambaneinto partake
7νόειnoeiConsider ὃhowhat λέγωlegōI am saying , δώῃdōēmay grant γὰρgar[which] σοιsoiyou ὁhothe ΚύριοςKyriosLord σύνεσινsynesininsight ἐνeninto πᾶσιpasiall
8ΜνημόνευεMnēmoneueRemember ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus ΧριστὸνChristonChrist , ἐγηγερμένονegēgermenonraised ἐκekfrom νεκρῶνnekrōn[the] dead , ἐκekvvv σπέρματοςspermatosdescended ΔαυίδDauidfrom David , κατὰkataas proclaimed by τὸto- εὐαγγέλιόνeuangeliongospel , μουmoumy
9ἐνenfor ᾧhōwhich κακοπαθῶkakopathōI suffer μέχριmechrito the extent of δεσμῶνdesmōnbeing chained ὡςhōslike κακοῦργοςkakourgosa criminal . ἀλλ’all’Instead , ὁhothe λόγοςlogosword τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God οὐouvvv δέδεταιdedetaicannot be chained !
10διὰdiaFor this reason τοῦτοtouto. . . πάνταpantaall things ὑπομένωhypomenōI endure διὰdiafor the sake of τοὺςtousthe ἐκλεκτούςeklektouselect , ἵναhinaso that καὶkaitoo αὐτοὶautoithey σωτηρίαςsōtērias[the] salvation τύχωσιtukhosimay obtain τῆςtēsthat [is] ἐνenin ΧριστῷChristōChrist ἸησοῦIēsouJesus , μετὰmetawith δόξηςdoxēsglory . αἰωνίουaiōnioueternal
11ΠιστὸςPistos[This is a] trustworthy ὁho- λόγοςlogossaying : ΕἰEiIf γὰρgar- συναπεθάνομενsynapethanomenwe died [with Him] , καὶkaivvv συζήσομενsyzēsomenwe will also live [with Him] ;
12εἰeiif ὑπομένομενhypomenomenwe endure , καὶkaivvv συμβασιλεύσομεν*symbasileusomenwe will also reign [with Him] ; εἰeiif ἀρνούμεθα,arnoumethawe deny [Him] , κἀκεῖνοςkakeinosvvv ἀρνήσεταιarnēsetaiHe will also deny ἡμᾶςhēmasus ;
13εἰeiif ἀπιστοῦμενapistoumenwe are faithless , ἐκεῖνοςekeinosHe πιστὸςpistosfaithful , μένειmeneiremains ἀρνήσασθαιarnēsasthaideny ἑαυτὸνheautonHimself . οὐouvvv δύναταιdynataiHe cannot
14ΤαῦταTautaof these things , ὑπομίμνῃσκεhypomimnēskeRemind [ the believers ] διαμαρτυρόμενοςdiamartyromenoscharging [them] ἐνώπιονenōpionbefore τοῦtou- ΚυρίουKyriouof the Lord μὴmēto avoid λογομαχεῖνlogomacheinquarreling over words , εἰςeis[are] for οὐδὲνoudenonly χρήσιμονchrēsimonsucceeds ἐπὶepiin {leading} καταστροφῇkatastrophēto ruin . τῶνtōnthe ἀκουόντωνakouontōnlisteners
15ΣπούδασονSpoudasonMake every effort σεαυτὸνseautonyourself δόκιμονdokimonapproved παραστῆσαιparastēsaito present τῷtō- ΘεῷTheōto God , ἐργάτηνergatēnworkman ἀνεπαίσχυντονanepaischynton[an] unashamed ὀρθοτομοῦνταorthotomountawho accurately handles τὸνtonthe λόγονlogonword τῆςtēs- ἀληθείαςalētheiasof truth .
16ΤὰςTas- δὲdeBut βεβήλουςbebēlousirreverent , κενοφωνίαςkenophōniasempty chatter , περιΐστασοperiistasoavoid ἐπὶepito πλεῖονpleionmore γὰρgar[which] προκόψουσινprokopsousinwill [only] lead ἀσεβείαςasebeiasungodliness ,
17καὶkaiand ὁhothe λόγοςlogostalk αὐτῶνautōnof [such men] ὡςhōslike γάγγραιναgangrainagangrene . νομὴνnomēnspread ἕξειhexeiwill ὧνhōnAmong [them] ἐστινestinare ὙμέναιοςHymenaiosHymenaeus καὶkaiand ΦιλητόςPhilētosPhiletus ,
18οἵτινεςhoitineswho περὶperifrom τὴνtēnthe ἀλήθειανalētheiantruth . ἠστόχησανēstochēsanhave deviated λέγοντεςlegontesThey say that τὴνtēnthe ἀνάστασινanastasinresurrection ἤδηēdēvvv γεγονέναιgegonenaihas already occurred , καὶkaiand ἀνατρέπουσιanatrepousithey undermine τήνtēnthe τινωνtinōnof some . πίστινpistinfaith
19ὉHo- μέντοιmentoiNevertheless , στερεὸςstereosfirm θεμέλιοςthemeliosfoundation τοῦtouvvv ΘεοῦTheouGod’s ἕστηκενhestēkenstands , ἔχωνechōnbearing τὴνtēn- σφραγῖδαsphragidaseal : ταύτηνtautēnthis ἜγνωEgnōknows ΚύριοςKyrios“ [The] Lord τοὺςtousthose who ὄνταςontasare αὐτοῦautouHis , ” καίkaiand , ἈποστήτωApostētōmust turn away ἀπὸapofrom ἀδικίαςadikiasiniquity . ” πᾶςpas“ Everyone ὁhowho ὀνομάζωνonomazōncalls on τὸtothe ὄνομαonomaname ΚυρίουKyriouof the Lord
20ἘνEn- μεγάλῃmegalēA large δὲde- οἰκίᾳoikiahouse οὐκouknot ἐστίestiI have μόνονmonononly σκεύηskeuēvessels χρυσᾶchrysaof gold καὶkaiand ἀργυρᾶargyrasilver , ἀλλὰallabut καὶkaialso ξύλιναxylinaof wood καὶkaiand ὀστράκιναostrakinaclay . καὶkai- ἃhaSome μὲνmenindeed εἰςeis[are] for τιμὴνtimēnhonorable [use] , ἃhaothers δὲdebut εἰςeis[are] for ἀτιμίανatimiancommon [use] .
21ἐὰνeanif οὖνounSo τιςtisanyone ἐκκαθάρῃekkatharēcleanses ἑαυτὸνheautonhimself ἀπὸapoof τούτωνtoutōn[what is unfit] , ἔσταιestaihe will be σκεῦοςskeuosa vessel εἰςeisfor τιμήνtimēnhonor : ἡγιασμένονhēgiasmenonsanctified , καὶkai- εὔχρηστονeuchrēstonuseful τῷtōto the δεσπότῃdespotēMaster , εἰςeisfor πᾶνpanevery ἔργονergonwork . ἀγαθὸνagathongood ἡτοιμασμένονhētoimasmenon[and] prepared
22ΤὰςTas- δὲdeand νεωτερικὰςneōterikasyouthful ἐπιθυμίαςepithymiaspassions φεῦγεpheugeFlee from δίωκεdiōkepursue δὲdeand δικαιοσύνηνdikaiosynēnrighteousness , πίστινpistinfaith , ἀγάπηνagapēnlove , εἰρήνηνeirēnēn[and] peace , μετὰmetatogether with τῶνtōnthose who ἐπικαλουμένωνepikaloumenōncall on τὸνtonthe ΚύριονKyrionLord ἐκekout of καθαρᾶςkatharasa pure καρδίαςkardiasheart .
23ΤὰςTas- δὲdeBut μωρὰςmōrasfoolish καὶkaiand ἀπαιδεύτουςapaideutousignorant ζητήσειςzētēseisspeculation , παραιτοῦparaitoureject εἰδὼςeidōsfor you know ὅτιhotithat γεννῶσιgennosiit breeds μάχαςmachasquarreling .
24δοῦλονdoulona servant δὲdeAnd ΚυρίουKyriouof [the] Lord οὐounot δεῖdeimust μάχεσθαιmachesthaibe quarrelsome , ἀλλ’all’Instead , ἤπιονēpionkind εἶναιeinaimust be πρὸςprosto πάνταςpantaseveryone , διδακτικόνdidaktikonable to teach , ἀνεξίκακονanexikakon[and] forbearing .
25ἐνenvvv πρᾳότητιpraoteti[He must] gently παιδεύονταpaideuontareprove τοὺςtousthose who ἀντιδιατιθεμένουςantidiatithemenousoppose [him] , μήποτέmepotethat at not time, lest ever δῷdōbringing αὐτοῖςautoisthem ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod μετάνοιανmetanoianrepentance εἰςeisleading to ἐπίγνωσινepignōsina knowledge ἀληθείαςalētheiasof [the] truth .
26καὶkaiThen ἀνανήψωσινananēpsōsinthey will come to their senses ἐκek[and escape] τῆςtēsthe τοῦtouof the διαβόλουdiaboloudevil , παγίδοςpagidossnare ἐζωγρημένοιezōgrēmenoihas taken them captive ὑπ’hyp’. . . αὐτοῦautou[who] εἰςeisto τὸto- ἐκείνουekeinouhis θέλημαthelēmawill .
