1ἈλήθειανAlētheian[the] truth λέγωlegōI say : ἐνenin ΧριστῷChristōChrist ; οὐouvvv ψεύδομαιpseudomaiI am not lying , συμμαρτυρούσηςsymmartyrousēsas confirmed μοιmoi. . . τῆςtēs- συνειδήσεώςsyneidēseōsconscience μουmouby my ἐνenin ΠνεύματιPneumatiSpirit . ἉγίῳHagiō[the] Holy
2ὅτιhoti- λύπηlypēsorrow μοίmoiI ἐστίestiI have μεγάληmegalēdeep καὶkaiand ἀδιάλειπτοςadialeiptosunceasing ὀδύνηodynēanguish τῇtēin καρδίᾳkardiaheart . μουmoumy
3ηὐχόμηνēuchomēncould wish that γὰρgarFor αὐτὸςautosI myself ἐγὼegōI ἀνάθεμαanathemacursed εἶναιeinaiwere ἀπὸapo[and] cut off from τοῦtou- ΧριστοῦChristouChrist ὑπὲρhyperfor the sake of τῶνtōn- ἀδελφῶνadelphōnbrothers , κατὰkata. . . σάρκαsarka. . . ,
4οἵτινέςhoitines[the people of] εἰσινeisin- ἸσραηλῖταιIsraēlitaiIsrael . ὧνhōn[Theirs is] ἡhēthe υἱοθεσίαhuiothesiaadoption as sons ; καὶkai[theirs] ἡhēthe δόξαdoxadivine glory καὶkaiand αἱhaithe διαθῆκαιdiathēkaicovenants ; καὶkai[theirs] ἡhēthe νομοθεσίαnomothesiagiving of the law , καὶkai- ἡhēthe λατρείαlatreiatemple worship , καὶkaiand αἱhaithe ἐπαγγελίαιepangeliaipromises .
5ὧνhōn[Theirs are] οἱhoithe πατέρεςpaterespatriarchs , καὶkaiand ἐξexfrom ὧνhōnthem [ proceeds ] ὁho- ΧριστὸςChristosof Christ , τὸto- κατὰkatavvv σάρκαsarka[the] human [descent] ὁho- ὢνōnis ἐπὶepiover πάντωνpantōnall , ΘεὸςTheosGod εὐλογητὸςeulogētosworthy of praise ! εἰςeisvvv τοὺςtousvvv αἰῶναςaiōnasforever ἀμήνamēnAmen .
6ΟὐχOuch[It is] not οἷονhoionas though δὲde- ὅτιhoti- ἐκπέπτωκενekpeptōkenhas failed . ὁho- λόγοςlogosword τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod’s οὐounot γὰρgarFor πάντεςpantesall οἱhoiwho [are] ἐξexdescended from ἸσραήλIsraēlIsrael οὗτοιhoutoi[are] ἸσραήλIsraēlIsrael .
7οὐδ’oud’Nor ὅτιhotibecause εἰσὶeisiare σπέρμαspermadescendants ἈβραάμAbraamAbraham’s πάντεςpantes[are] they all τέκναtekna[his] children . ἀλλ’all’On the contrary , ἘνEn“ Through ἸσαὰκIsaakIsaac κληθήσεταίklēthēsetaiwill be reckoned .” σοιsoiyour σπέρμαspermaoffspring
8τοῦτ’tout’So ἔστινestinit is οὐounot τὰtathe τέκναteknachildren τῆςtēsof the σαρκὸςsarkosflesh ταῦταtauta[who are] τέκναteknachildren , τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod’s ἀλλὰallabut [it is] τὰtathe τέκναteknachildren τῆςtēsof the ἐπαγγελίαςepangeliaspromise λογίζεταιlogizetaiwho are regarded εἰςeisas σπέρμαspermaoffspring .
9ἐπαγγελίαςepangeliaspromise γὰρgarFor ὁhowhat λόγοςlogosstated : οὗτοςhoutosthis [is] ΚατὰKata“ At τὸνtonthe καιρὸνkaironappointed time τοῦτονtouton- ἐλεύσομαιeleusomaiI will return , καὶkaiand ἔσταιestaiwill have τῇtē- ΣάρρᾳSarraSarah υἱόςhuiosa son .”
10ΟὐOuNot μόνονmonononly δέdethat , ἀλλὰallabut καὶkai- ῬεβέκκαRhebekkaRebecca’s [children] ἐξexby ἑνὸςhenosone [man] , κοίτηνkoitēnconceived ἔχουσαechousawere ἸσαὰκIsaakIsaac . τοῦtou- πατρὸςpatrosfather ἡμῶνhēmōnour
11μήπωmēpōbefore [the twins] γὰρgarYet γεννηθέντωνgennēthentōnwere born μηδὲmēde[or] πραξάντωνpraxantōnhad done τιtianything ἀγαθὸνagathongood ἢēor κακὸνkakonevil ἵναhinain order that ἡhē- κατ’kat’of ἐκλογὴνeklogēnelection τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod’s πρόθεσιςprothesisplan μένῃmenēmight stand , οὐκouknot ἐξexby ἔργωνergōnworks ἀλλ’all’but ἐκekby τοῦtouHim who καλοῦντοςkalountoscalls ,
12ἐρρέθηerrethēwas told αὐτῇautēshe ὅτιhoti- , ὉHo“ The μείζωνmeizōnolder δουλεύσειdouleuseiwill serve τῷtōthe ἐλάσσονιelassoniyounger .”
13καθὼς*kathōsSo γέγραπταιgegraptaiit is written : ΤὸνTon- ἸακὼβIakōb“ Jacob ἠγάπησαēgapēsaI loved , τὸνton- δὲdebut ἨσαῦĒsauEsau ἐμίσησαemisēsaI hated .”
14ΤίTiWhat οὖνounthen ἐροῦμενeroumenshall we say ? μὴmē[Is] ἀδικίαadikiaunjust ? παρὰpara- τῷtō- θεῷtheōGod μὴmēvvv γένοιτοgenoitoCertainly not !
15τῷtōto γὰρgarFor ΜωϋσεῖMōuseiMoses : λέγειlegeiHe says ἘλεήσωEleēsō“ I will have mercy on ὃνhonwhom ἂνanvvv ἐλεῶeleōI have mercy , καὶkaiand οἰκτιρήσω*oiktirēsōI will have compassion on ὃνhonwhom ἂνanvvv οἰκτίρω*oiktirōI have compassion .”
16ἌραAraSo οὖνounthen , οὐou[it does] not [depend] τοῦtouon man’s θέλοντοςthelontosdesire οὐδὲoude[or] τοῦtou- τρέχοντοςtrechontoseffort , ἀλλὰallabut τοῦtouon ἐλεοῦντοςeleountosmercy . ΘεοῦTheouGod’s
17λέγειlegeisays γὰρgarFor ἡhēthe γραφὴgraphēScripture τῷtōto ΦαραὼPharaōPharaoh ὅτιhoti- : ΕἰςEisfor αὐτὸautothis very τοῦτοtouto[purpose] , ἐξήγειράexēgeira“ I raised you up σεse. . . ὅπωςhopōsthat ἐνδείξωμαιendeixōmaiI might display ἐνenin σοὶsoiyou , τὴνtēn- δύναμίνdynaminpower μουmouMy καὶkaiand ὅπωςhopōsthat διαγγελῇdiangelēmight be proclaimed τὸto- ὄνομάonomaname μουmouMy ἐνenin πάσῃpasēall τῇtēthe γῇgēearth .”
18ἄραaraTherefore οὖνoun. . . ὃνhonon whom θέλειtheleiHe wants [to have mercy ] , ἐλεεῖeleei[God] has mercy ὃνhonon whom δὲdeand θέλειtheleiHe wants [to have mercy ] , σκληρύνειsklēryneiHe hardens
19ἘρεῖςEreisOne of you will say οὖνoun- μοιmoito me , ΤίTiwhy ἔτιetivvv μέμφεταιmemphetaidoes [God] still find fault ? τῷtō- γὰρgarFor βουλήματιboulēmatiwill ? ” αὐτοῦautouHis τίςtiswho ἀνθέστηκε;anthestekecan resist
20μενοῦνγεmenoungeBut ὦōO ἄνθρωπεanthrōpeman , σὺsy- τίςtiswho εἶeiare you , ὦōO ἀνταποκρινόμενοςantapokrinomenosto talk back τῷtō- ΘεῷTheōto God ? μὴmē[Shall] ἐρεῖereisay τῷtōto Him who πλάσμαplasmais formed τὸtowhat πλάσαντιplasantiformed [it] , ΤίTi“ Why μεmeme ἐποίησαςepoiēsasdid You make οὕτωςhoutōslike this ?”
21ἢē- οὐκouk{Does} not ἔχειecheihave ἐξουσίανexousianthe right ὁhothe κεραμεὺςkerameuspotter τοῦtouthe πηλοῦpēlouof clay ἐκekfrom τοῦtouthe αὐτοῦautousame φυράματοςphyramatoslump ποιῆσαιpoiēsaito make ὁhothe μὲνmen- εἰςeisfor τιμὴνtimēnspecial occasions σκεῦοςskeuosvessel ὃhoone δὲdeand εἰςeisfor ἀτιμίανatimiancommon use ?
22ΕἰEiWhat if δὲde- θέλωνthelōnintending ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod , ἐνδείξασθαιendeixasthaito show τὴνtēn[His] ὀργὴνorgēnwrath καὶkaiand γνωρίσαιgnōrisaimake τὸto- δυνατὸνdynatonpower {known} , αὐτοῦautouHis ἤνεγκενēnenkenbore ἐνenwith πολλῇpollēgreat μακροθυμίᾳmakrothymiapatience σκεύηskeuē[the] vessels ὀργῆςorgēsof His wrath , κατηρτισμέναkatērtismenaprepared εἰςeisfor ἀπώλειανapōleiandestruction ?
23καὶkai[What if He did this] ἵναhinato γνωρίσῃgnōrisēmake τὸνtonthe πλοῦτονploutonriches τῆςtēsof δόξηςdoxēsglory {known} αὐτοῦautouHis ἐπὶepito σκεύηskeuē[the] vessels ἐλέουςeleousof [His] mercy , ἃhawhom προητοίμασενproētoimasenHe prepared in advance εἰςeisfor δόξανdoxanglory —
24οὓςhouswhom καὶkaiincluding ἐκάλεσενekalesenHe has called ἡμᾶςhēmasus , οὐounot μόνονmonononly ἐξexfrom ἸουδαίωνIoudaiōn[the] Jews , ἀλλὰallabut καὶkaialso ἐξexfrom ἐθνῶνethnōn[the] Gentiles ?
25ὡςhōsAs καὶkai- ἐνenin τῷtō- ὩσηὲHōsēeHosea : λέγειlegeiHe says ΚαλέσωKalesō“ I will call [them] τὸνtonwho [are] οὐounot λαόνlaonpeople , μουmouMy λαόνlaonpeople , μουmouMy καὶkaiand [I will call her] τὴνtēnwho [is] οὐκouknot ἠγαπημένηνēgapēmenēn[My] beloved ,” ἠγαπημένηνēgapēmenēn[My] beloved ,”
26ΚαὶKaiand , ἜσταιEstai“ It will happen that ἐνenin τῷtōthe τόπῳtopōvery place οὗhouwhere ἐρρέθηerrethēit was said αὐτοῖςautoisto them , ΟὐOu[are] not λαόςlaospeople , ’ μουmouMy ὑμεῖςhymeis‘ You ἐκεῖekei- κληθήσονταιklēthēsontaithey will be called ΥἱοὶHuioi‘ sons ΘεοῦTheouGod .’” ζῶντοςzōntosof [the] living
27ἨσαΐαςĒsaiasIsaiah δὲde- κράζειkrazeicries out ὑπὲρhyperconcerning τοῦtou- ἸσραήλIsraēlIsrael : ἘὰνEan“ Though ᾖēis ὁhothe ἀριθμὸςarithmosnumber τῶνtōnof the υἱῶνhuiōnvvv ἸσραὴλIsraēlIsraelites ὡςhōslike ἡhēthe ἄμμοςammossand τῆςtēsof the θαλάσσηςthalassēssea , τὸto[only] the κατάλειμμαkataleimmaremnant σωθήσεταιsōthēsetaiwill be saved .
28λόγονlogon[His] sentence γὰρgarFor συντελῶνsyntelōnthoroughly καὶkaiand συντέμνωνsyntemnōndecisively .” ἐνenin δικαιοσύνῃdikaiosynērighteousness ὅτιhotiThat λόγονlogon[His] sentence συντετμημένονsyntetmimenonbrief ποιήσειpoiēseiwill carry out ΚύριοςKyrios[the] Lord ἐπὶepion τῆςtēsthe γῆςgēsearth
29καὶkaiand καθὼςkathōs[It is] just as προείρηκενproeirēkenforetold : ἨσαΐαςĒsaiasIsaiah ΕἰEi“ Unless μὴmē. . . ΚύριοςKyrios[the] Lord ΣαβαὼθSabaōthof Hosts ἐγκατέλειπενegkateleipenhad left ἡμῖνhēminus σπέρμαspermadescendants , ὡςhōslike ΣόδομαSodomaSodom , ἂνanvvv ἐγενήθημενegenēthēmenwe would have become καὶkai- ὡςhōslike ΓόμορραGomorraGomorrah .” ἂνanvvv ὡμοιώθημενhōmoiōthēmenwe would have resembled
30ΤίTiWhat οὖνounthen ἐροῦμενeroumenwill we say ? ὅτιhotiThat ἔθνηethnē[the] Gentiles , τὰtawho μὴmēvvv διώκονταdiōkontadid not pursue δικαιοσύνηνdikaiosynēnrighteousness , κατέλαβεkatelabehave obtained δικαιοσύνηνdikaiosynēnrighteousness , δικαιοσύνηνdikaiosynēnrighteousness , δὲde- τὴνtēnthat [is] ἐκekby πίστεωςpisteōsfaith ;
31ἸσραὴλIsraēlIsrael , δὲdebut διώκωνdiōkōnwho pursued νόμονnomona law δικαιοσύνηςdikaiosynēsof righteousness , εἰςeisvvv νόμονnomon[it] . δικαιοσύνηςdikaiosynēsof righteousness , οὐκoukvvv ἔφθασε.ephthasehas come
32διατίdiatiwhy ὅτιhotiBecause [their pursuit was] οὐκouknot ἐκekby πίστεωςpisteōsfaith , ἀλλ’all’but ὡςhōsas if [it were] ἐξexby ἔργωνergōnworks . νόμουnomouLaw , προσέκοψανprosekopsanThey stumbled γὰρgarFor τὸto[only] the λίθῳlithōstone , τοῦtouvvv προσκόμματοςproskommatosstumbling
33καθὼςkathōsas γέγραπταιgegraptaiit is written : ἸδοὺIdou“ See , τίθημιtithēmiI lay ἐνenin ΣιὼνSiōnZion λίθονlithona stone προσκόμματοςproskommatosof stumbling καὶkaiand πέτρανpetrana rock σκανδάλουskandalouof offense ; καὶkaiand ὁhothe [one who] πιστεύωνpisteuōnbelieves ἐπ’ep’in αὐτῷautōHim οὐouvvv καταισχυνθήσεταιkataischynthēsetaiwill never be put to shame .”
