1ΠᾶσαPasaEveryone ψυχὴpsychē. . . ἐξουσίαιςexousiaisto the governing authorities ὑπερεχούσαιςhyperechousais. . . , ὑποτασσέσθωhypotassesthōmust submit himself οὐouno γὰρgarfor ἔστινestinthere is ἐξουσίαexousiaauthority εἰeiexcept μὴ. . . ὑπὸhypo[that which is from] ΘεοῦTheouGod . αἱhai[The authorities] that δὲde- οὖσαιousaiexist ἐξουσίαιexousiaipower ὑπὸhypoby τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod τεταγμέναιtetagmenaihave been appointed εἰσίνeisin. . .
2ὥστεhōsteConsequently , howhoever ἀντιτασσόμενοςantitassomenosresists τῇ- ἐξουσίᾳexousiaauthority τῇ- τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod διαταγῇdiatagēhas set in place , ἀνθέστηκενanthestēkenis opposing οἱhoithose who δὲdeand ἀνθεστηκότεςanthestēkotes[do so] ἑαυτοῖςheautoison themselves . κρίμαkrimajudgment λήψονται.lepsontaiwill receive
3οἱhoi- γὰρgarFor ἄρχοντεςarchontesrulers οὐκouknot εἰσὶeisiare φόβοςphobosa terror τὸνton- ἀγαθόνagathongood . ἔργονergondeed ἀλλὰallabut τὸνton- κακὸνkakonwrongdoer . θέλειςtheleisDo you want δὲde- μὴvvv φοβεῖσθαιphobeisthaito be unafraid τὴνtēnof the ἐξουσίανexousianone in authority ? τὸtowhat [is] ἀγαθὸνagathonright , ποίειpoiei[Then] do καὶkaiand ἕξειςhexeisyou will have ἔπαινονepainonapproval . ἐξexvvv αὐτῆςautēshis
4ΘεοῦTheouGod’s γὰρgarFor διάκονόςdiakonosservant ἐστίestiI have σοὶsoiyour εἰςeisfor τὸto- ἀγαθόνagathongood . ἐὰνeanif δὲdeBut τὸto- κακὸνkakonwrong , ποιῇςpoiēsyou do φοβοῦphoboube afraid , οὐouvvv γὰρgarfor εἰκῇeikēin vain . τὴνtēnthe μάχαιρανmachairansword φορεῖphoreihe does not carry ΘεοῦTheouGod’s γὰρgar- διάκονόςdiakonosservant , ἐστινestinHe is εἰςeisof ὀργὴνorgēnretribution ἔκδικοςekdikosan agent τῷto the τῷto the κακὸνkakonwrongdoer . πράσσοντιprassontivvv
5ΔιὸDioTherefore ἀνάγκηanankē[it is] necessary ὑποτάσσεσθαιhypotassesthaito submit [ to authority ] , οὐounot μόνονmonononly διὰdiato avoid τὴνtēn- ὀργὴνorgēnpunishment , ἀλλὰallabut καὶkaialso διὰdiaas a matter of τὴνtēn- συνείδησινsyneidēsinconscience .
6διὰdiaThis is also why τοῦτοtouto. . . γὰρgar- καὶkai. . . φόρουςphoroustaxes . τελεῖτεteleiteyou pay λειτουργοὶleitourgoiservants , γὰρgarFor ΘεοῦTheouGod’s εἰσινeisin[the authorities] are εἰςeisto αὐτὸautovvv τοῦτοtouto[their work] . προσκαρτεροῦντεςproskarterounteswho devote themselves
7ἀπόδοτεapodotePay πᾶσιpasiall τὰςtaswhat ὀφειλάςopheilasyou owe [him] : τῷto whom τὸνton- φόρονphorontaxes [are due] , τὸνton- φόρονphorontaxes [are due] , τὸto- τὸto- τέλοςtelosrevenue τῷto whom τέλοςtelosrevenue τῷto whom τὸνton- φόβονphobonrespect τὸνton- φόβονphobonrespect τῷto whom τὴνtēn- τιμήνtimēnhonor τὴνtēn- τιμήνtimēnhonor
8ΜηδενὶMēdenito no one μηδὲνmēden. . . , ὀφείλετεopheileteBe indebted εἰeiexcept μὴ. . . τὸto- ἀγαπᾶνagapan[in] love . ἀλλήλουςallēlousto one another hohe who γὰρgarFor ἀγαπῶνagapōnloves τὸνton[his] ἕτερονheteronneighbor νόμονnomon[the] law . πεπλήρωκε·peplerokehas fulfilled
9τὸtoThe [commandments] γάρgar- ΟὐOuvvv μοιχεύσειςmoicheuseis“ Do not commit adultery , ” ΟὐOuvvv φονεύσειςphoneuseis“ Do not murder , ” ΟὐOuvvv κλέψειςklepseis“ Do not steal , ” ΟὐκOukvvv ἐπιθυμήσειςepithymēseis“ Do not covet ,” καὶkaiand εἴei- τιςtisany ἑτέραheteraother ἐντολήentolēcommandments , ἐνenin τούτῳtoutōthis τῷ[one] λόγῳlogōdecree ἀνακεφαλαιοῦταιanakephalaioutaiare summed up ἐνenin τῷ[one] ἈγαπήσειςAgapēseis“ Love τὸνton- πλησίονplēsionneighbor σουsouyour ὡςhōsas σεαυτόνseautonyourself .”
10- ἀγάπηagapēLove τῷto [its] πλησίονplēsionneighbor . κακὸνkakondoes no wrong οὐκoukvvv ἐργάζεταιergazetaivvv πλήρωμαplērōma[the] fulfillment οὖνounTherefore νόμουnomouof [the] law . - ἀγάπηagapēlove [is]
11ΚαὶKaiAnd [do] τοῦτοtoutothis , εἰδότεςeidotesunderstanding τὸνtonthe καιρόνkaironoccasion . ὅτιhoti- ὥραhōra[The] hour ἡμᾶςhēmasus , ἤδηēdēhas come ἐξexfrom ὕπνουhypnou[your] slumber , ἐγερθῆναιegerthēnaito wake up νῦνnynnow γὰρgarfor ἐγγύτερονengyteron[is] nearer ἡμῶνhēmōnour - σωτηρίαsōtēriasalvation - ὅτεhotewhen ἐπιστεύσαμενepisteusamenwe {first} believed .
12The νὺξnyxnight προέκοψενproekopsenis nearly over ; the δὲde- ἡμέραhēmeraday ἤγγικενēngikenhas drawn near . ἀποθώμεθαapothōmethalet us lay aside οὖνounSo τὰtathe ἔργαergadeeds τοῦtou- σκότουςskotousof darkness καὶkaiand ἐνδυσώμεθαendysōmethaput on τὰtathe ὅπλαhoplaarmor τοῦtou- φωτόςphōtosof light .
13ὡςhōsas ἐνenin ἡμέρᾳhēmera[the] daytime , εὐσχημόνωςeuschēmonōsdecently , περιπατήσωμενperipatēsōmenLet us behave μὴnot κώμοιςkōmoisin carousing καὶkaiand μέθαιςmethaisdrunkenness , μὴnot κοίταιςkoitaisin sexual immorality καὶkaiand ἀσελγείαιςaselgeiaisdebauchery , μὴnot ἔριδιeridiin dissension καὶkaiand ζήλῳzēlōjealousy .
14ἀλλ’all’Instead , ἐνδύσασθεendysastheclothe yourselves with τὸνtonthe ΚύριονKyrionLord ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus ΧριστόνChristonChrist , καὶkaiand τῆςtēsof the σαρκὸςsarkosflesh . πρόνοιανpronoianprovision μὴno ποιεῖσθεpoieisthemake εἰςeisfor ἐπιθυμίαςepithymias[the] desires
