2καὶkai- ἰδοὺidouRight there ἄνθρωπόςanthrōposman τιςtisa ἦνēnwas ὑδρωπικὸςhydrōpikoswith dropsy . ἔμπροσθενemprosthenbefore αὐτοῦautouHim
3καὶkai- ἀποκριθεὶςapokritheisasked ho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus εἰπὲeipesay πρὸςpros. . . τοὺςtousthe νομικοὺςnomikousexperts in the law καὶkaiand ΦαρισαίουςPharisaious[the] Pharisees λέγωνlegōn- , ΕἴEi“ If ἔξεστιexestiis unlawful τῷto σαββάτῳsabbatōSabbath θεραπεύεινtherapeuein[ power ] to cure
4ΟἱHoi- δὲdeBut ἡσύχασανhēsychasanthey remained silent . ΚαὶKaiThen ἐπιλαβόμενοςepilabomenos[Jesus] took hold [of the man] , ἰάσατοiasatohealed αὐτὸνautonhim , καὶkaiand ἀπέλυσε.apeluseHe sent him away καὶkaiand
5ἀποκριθεὶςapokritheisasked πρὸςpros. . . αὐτοὺςautousthem , εἰπὲeipesay ΤίνοςTinos“ Which ὑμῶνhymōnof you υἱὸςhuios[whose] son ēor βοῦςbousox εἰςeisinto φρέαρphreara pit ἐμπεσεῖται,empeseitaifalls καὶkai- οὐκouk{will} not εὐθέωςeutheōsimmediately ἀνασπάσειanaspaseipull him out αὐτὸνauton. . . ? ” ἐνenon τῇthe ἡμέρᾳhēmeraday τοῦtouthe σαββάτουsabbatouSabbath
6καὶkai- οὐκouk{will} not ἴσχυσανischysanthey were unable ἀνταποκριθῆναιantapokrithēnaito answer αὐτῷautōto [Jesus] , πρὸςpros. . . ταῦταtautaall this
7Ἔλεγεelege[Jesus] declared δὲdevvv πρὸςprosto τοὺςtous- κεκλημένουςkeklēmenousthe guests παραβολήνparabolēna parable : ἐπέχωνepechōnWhen [Jesus] noticed πῶςpōshow τὰςtasthe πρωτοκλισίαςprōtoklisiasplaces of honor , ἐξελέγοντοexelegontochose λέγωνlegōn. . . πρὸςpros. . . αὐτούςautousthem
8ὍτανHotan“ When κληθῇςklēthēsyou are invited ὑπόhypo. . . τινοςtinos. . . εἰςeisto γάμουςgamousa wedding banquet , μὴ{do} not κατακλιθῇςkataklithēssit εἰςeisin τὴνtēnthe πρωτοκλισίανprōtoklisianplace of honor , μήποτεmepote. . . ἐντιμότερόςentimoteros[someone] more distinguished σουsouthan you ēhas been κεκλημένοςkeklēmenosinvited ὑπ’hyp’- αὐτοῦautou- .
9καὶkaiThen ἐλθὼνelthōnwill come hothe σὲseboth of you καὶkai. . . αὐτὸνauton. . . καλέσαςkalesashost who invited ἐρεῖerei[and] tell σοιsoiyou , ΔὸςDos‘ Give τούτῳtoutōthis man τόπονtopon[your] seat . ’ καὶkaiAnd τότεtote- ἄρξῃarxēyou will have μετ’met’. . . αἰσχύνηςaischynēshumiliation , τὸνtonthe ἔσχατονeschatonlast τόπονtoponplace . κατέχεινkatecheinto take
10Ἀλλ’All’But ὅτανhotanwhen κληθῇςklēthēsyou are invited , πορευθεὶςporeutheisgo ἀνάπεσεanapese[and] sit εἰςeisin τὸνtonthe ἔσχατονeschatonlast τόπονtoponplace , ἵναhinaso that ὅτανhotan- ἔλθῃelthēwill come ho- κεκληκώςkeklēkōsyour host σεse. . . εἰπὲeipesay σοιsoiyou , ΦίλεPhile‘ Friend , προσανάβηθιprosanabēthimove up ἀνώτερονanōteronto a better place . ’ τότεtoteThen ἔσταιestaiwill be σοιsoiyou δόξαdoxahonored ἐνώπιονenōpionin front of πάντωνpantōneveryone τῶνtōn- συνανακειμένωνsynanakeimenōnat the table σοιsoi[with] you .
11ὅτιhotiFor πᾶςpaseveryone howho ὑψῶνhypsōnexalts ἑαυτὸνheautonhimself ταπεινωθήσεταιtapeinōthēsetaiwill be humbled , καὶkaiand hothe [one who] ταπεινῶνtapeinōnhumbles ἑαυτὸνheautonhimself ὑψωθήσεταιhypsōthēsetaiwill be exalted . ”
12Ἔλεγεelege[Jesus] declared δὲdeThen καὶkai. . . τῷto the [man who] κεκληκότιkeklēkotihad invited αὐτόνautonHim , ὍτανHotan“ When ποιῇςpoiēsyou host ἄριστονaristona dinner ēor δεῖπνονdeipnona banquet , μὴ{do} not φώνειphōneiinvite τοὺςtous- φίλουςphilousfriends σουsou- μηδὲmēde[or] τοὺςtous- ἀδελφούςadelphousbrothers σουsou- μηδὲmēde[or] τοὺςtous- συγγενεῖςsyngeneisrelatives σουsou- μηδὲmēde[or] γείτοναςgeitonasneighbors . πλουσίουςplousiousrich μήποτεmepote. . . καὶkai- αὐτοὶautoithey σεseyou {in return} , ἀντικαλέσωσι,antikalesosimay invite σεseyou {in return} , καὶkaiand γενήσεταιgenēsetaiwill not be σοιsoiyou ἀνταπόδομάantapodomarepaid .
13ἀλλ’all’But ὅτανhotanwhen ποιῇςpoiēsyou host δοχὴνdochēna banquet , κάλειkaleiinvite πτωχούςptōchousthe poor , ἀναπήρους,anaperousthe crippled , χωλούςchōlousthe lame , τυφλούςtyphlous[and] the blind ,
14καὶkaiand μακάριοςmakariosblessed . ἔσῃesēyou will be ὅτιhotiSince οὐκoukvvv ἔχουσινechousinthey cannot ἀνταποδοῦναίantapodounairepay σοιsoiyou , ἀνταποδοθήσεταιantapodothēsetaiwill be repaid γάρgar- σοιsoiyou ἐνenat τῇthe ἀναστάσειanastaseiresurrection τῶνtōnof the δικαίωνdikaiōnrighteous . ”
15ἈκούσαςAkousasheard δέdeWhen τιςtisone τῶνtōnof those συνανακειμένωνsynanakeimenōnreclining with [Him] ταῦταtauta[this] , εἶπενeipenhe said αὐτῷautōto [Jesus] , ΜακάριοςMakarios“ Blessed [is everyone] ὃςhoswho φάγεταιphagetaiwill eat at the feast ἄριστονaristona dinner ἐνenat τῇthe βασιλείᾳbasileiakingdom τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God . ”
16Ho- δὲdeBut εἶπενeipen[Jesus] replied αὐτῷautō- , ἌνθρωπόςAnthrōposman τιςtis“ A certain ἐποίησεepoiesehas done δεῖπνονdeipnonbanquet μέγαmegaa great καὶkaiand ἐκάλεσεekaleseinvited πολλούςpollousmany [guests] .
17καὶkai- ἀπέστειλεapesteileHe sent them out τὸνton- δοῦλονdoulonservant αὐτοῦautouhis τῇ[When it was] ὥρᾳhōratime τοῦtoufor the δείπνουdeipnoubanquet , εἰπεῖνeipeinto tell τοῖςtoisthose κεκλημένοιςkeklēmenoiswho had been invited , ἜρχεσθεErchesthe‘ Come , ὅτιhotifor ἤδηēdēnow ἕτοιμάhetoimaready . ’ ἐστιestiis πάνταpanta-
18ΚαὶKaiBut ἤρξαντοērxantobegan ἀπὸapovvv μιᾶςmiasone after another παραιτεῖσθαιparaiteisthaito make excuses . πάντεςpantesthey all hoThe πρῶτοςprōtosfirst [one] εἶπενeipensaid αὐτῷautō- , ἈγρὸνAgrona field , ἠγόρασαēgorasa‘ I have bought καὶkaiand ἔχωechōI ἀνάγκηνanankēnneed ἐξελθεῖνexelthein[Jesus] went out καὶkaiand ἰδεῖνideinsee αὐτόνautonit . ἐρωτῶerōtōPlease σεse. . . ἔχεechevvv μεmeme . ’ παρῃτημένονparētēmenonexcuse
19ΚαὶKai- ἕτεροςheterosAnother εἰπὲeipesay ΖεύγηZeugēyoke βοῶνboōnof oxen , ἠγόρασαēgorasa‘ I have bought πέντεpentefive καὶkaiand πορεύομαιporeuomaiI am going δοκιμάσαιdokimasaito try αὐτάautathem [out] . ἐρωτῶerōtōPlease σεse. . . ἔχεechevvv μεmeme . ’ παρῃτημένονparētēmenonexcuse
20ΚαὶKaiStill ἕτεροςheterosanother εἰπὲeipesay ΓυναῖκαGynaikaa wife , ἔγημαegēma‘ I have married καὶkai- διὰdiaso τοῦτοtouto. . . οὐouvvv δύναμαιdynamaiI cannot ἐλθεῖνeltheincome . ’
21ΚαὶKai- παραγενόμενοςparagenomenosreturned hoThe δοῦλοςdoulosservant ἐκεῖνοςekeinosthat ἀπήγγειλεapeggeileshe explained τῷto κυρίῳkyriōmaster . αὐτοῦautouhis ταῦταtautaall this τότεtoteThen ὀργισθεὶςorgistheisbecame angry hothe οἰκοδεσπότηςoikodespotēsowner of the house εἰπὲeipesay τῷto δούλῳdoulōservant , αὐτοῦautouhis ἜξελθεExelthe‘ Go out ταχέωςtacheōsquickly εἰςeisinto τὰςtasthe πλατείαςplateiasstreets καὶkaiand ῥύμαςrhymasalleys τῆςtēsof the πόλεωςpoleōscity , καὶkaiand τοὺςtousthe πτωχοὺςptōchouspoor , καὶkai- ἀναπήρουςanaperousthe crippled , καὶkai- χωλοὺςchōlous[the] lame . ’ καὶkaiand τυφλοὺςtyphlous[the] blind , εἰσάγαγεeisagagebring in ὧδεhōde. . .
22καὶkaiand εἶπενeipen[and] said hothe δοῦλοςdoulosservant ΚύριεKyrie‘ Sir , ’ γέγονενgegonenhas been done , ὃςhoswho ἐπέταξαςepetaxasyou ordered καὶkaiand ἔτιetistill τόποςtoposroom . ’ ἐστί.estiis
23ΚαὶKai[So] εἶπενeipentold hothe κύριοςkyriosmaster πρὸςpros. . . τὸνton[his] δοῦλονdoulonservant , ἜξελθεExelthe‘ Go out εἰςeisto τὰςtasthe ὁδοὺςhodoushighways καὶkaiand φραγμοὺςphragmoushedges καὶkaiand ἀνάγκασονanankasoncompel [them] εἰσελθεῖνeiseltheinto come in , ἵναhinaso that γεμισθῇgemisthēwill be full . ho- οἶκοςoikoshouse μουmoumy
24λέγωlegōI tell γὰρgarFor ὑμῖνhyminyou ὅτιhoti- , οὐδεὶςoudeisnot one τῶνtōn- ἀνδρῶνandrōnmen ἐκείνωνekeinōnof those τῶνtōn- κεκλημένωνkeklēmenōnwere invited γεύσεταίgeusetaiwill taste μουmoumy τοῦtou- δείπνουdeipnoubanquet . ’”
25ΣυνεπορεύοντοSyneporeuontowere now traveling with δὲdevvv αὐτῷautō[Jesus] , ὄχλοιochloicrowds πολλοίpolloiLarge καὶkaiand στραφεὶςstrapheisHe turned εἰπὲeipesay πρὸςprosto αὐτούςautousthem ,
26ΕἴEi“ If τιςtisanyone ἔρχεταιerchetaicomes πρόςprosto μεmeMe καὶkaiand οὐou{does} not μισεῖmiseihate τὸνton- πατέραpaterafather ἑαυτοῦ*heautouhis καὶkaiand τὴνtēn- μητέραmēteramother καὶkaiand τὴνtēn- γυναῖκαgynaikawife καὶkaiand τὰta- τέκναteknachildren καὶkaiand τοὺςtous- ἀδελφοὺςadelphousbrothers καὶkaiand τὰςtas- ἀδελφάςadelphassisters — ἔτιetiyes , δὲdevvv καὶkaiand τὴνtēn- ἑαυτοῦ*heautouhis ψυχὴνpsychēnlife — οὐouvvv δύναταιdynataihe cannot μουmouMy μαθητήςmathētēsdisciple . εἶναίeinaibe καὶkaieven
27ὅστιςhostis[And] whoever οὐou{does} not βαστάζειbastazeicarry τὸνton- σταυρὸνstauroncross ἑαυτοῦheautouhis καὶkaiand ἔρχεταιerchetaifollow ὀπίσωopisō. . . μουmouMe οὐouvvv δύναταιdynataicannot εἶναίeinaibe μουmouMy μαθητήςmathētēsdisciple .
28ΤίςTisWhich γὰρgar- ἐξexof ὑμῶνhymōnyou , θέλωνthelōnwishing πύργονpyrgona tower , οἰκοδομῆσαιoikodomēsaito build οὐχὶouchi{does} not πρῶτονprōtonfirst καθίσαςkathisassit down ψηφίζειpsēphizei[and] count τὴνtēnthe δαπάνηνdapanēncost εἰeito see if ἔχειecheihe has [ the resources ] τὰta- πρόςprosto ἀπαρτισμόνapartismoncomplete [it] ?
29ἵναhinaOtherwise μήποτε,mepote. . . θέντοςthentosif he lays αὐτοῦautou[the] θεμέλιονthemelionfoundation καὶkaiand μὴvvv ἰσχύσαντοςiskhusantosis unable ἐκτελέσαιektelesaito finish [the work] , πάντεςpanteseveryone οἱhoiwho θεωροῦντεςtheōrountessees [it] ἄρξωνταιarxōntaivvv αὐτῷautōhim , ἐμπαίζεινempaizeinwill ridicule
30λέγοντεςlegontessaying ὅτιhoti- , ΟὗτοςHoutos‘ This ho- ἄνθρωποςanthrōposman ἤρξατοērxatowhat he started οἰκοδομεῖνoikodomeinto build . ’ καὶkai- οὐκouknot ἴσχυσενischysencould ἐκτελέσαιektelesaifinish
31ĒOr τίςtiswhat βασιλεὺςbasileusking πορευόμενοςporeuomenoson his way συμβαλεῖνsymbaleinvvv ἑτέρῳheterōwith another βασιλεῖbasileiking εἰςeisvvv πόλεμονpolemonto war οὐχὶouchivvv πρῶτονprōton. . . καθίσαςkathisaswill not first sit down βουλεύσεταιbouleusetai[and] consider εἰeiwhether δυνατόςdynatoscan ἐστινestinhe ἐνenwith δέκαdekaten χιλιάσινchiliasinthousand [men] ἀπαντῆσαιapantesaiengage τῷthe [one] μετὰmetawith εἴκοσιeikositwenty χιλιάδωνchiliadōnthousand ? ἐρχομένῳerchomenōcoming ἐπ’ep’against αὐτόνautonhim
32εἰeiif δὲdeAnd μήγε,mege[he is unable] , ἔτιetistill πόρρωporrōfar off , αὐτοῦautou[while the other king] ὄντοςontosis πρεσβείανpresbeiana delegation ἀποστείλαςaposteilashe will send ἐρωτᾷerōtato ask τὰta- πρὸςprosfor εἰρήνηνeirēnēnterms of peace .
33ΟὕτωςHoutōsIn the same way οὖνoun. . . , πᾶςpasany one ἐξexof ὑμῶνhymōnyou ὃςhoswho οὐκoukvvv ἀποτάσσεταιapotassetaidoes not give up πᾶσιpasiall τοῖςtois- ἑαυτοῦheautouhe ὑπάρχουσινhyparchousinhas οὐouvvv δύναταιdynataicannot εἶναίeinaibe μουmouMy μαθητήςmathētēsdisciple .
34ΚαλὸνKalon[is] good , οὖνoun- τὸto- ἅλαςhalasSalt ἐὰνeanif δὲdebut καὶkai- τὸtothe ἅλαςhalassalt μωρανθῇmōranthēloses its savor , ἐνenwith τίνιtiniwhat ἀρτυθήσεταιartythēsetaiwill it be seasoned ?
35οὔτεouteneither εἰςeisfor γῆνgēn[the] soil οὔτεoutenor εἰςeisfor κοπρίανkoprian[the] manure pile , εὔθετόνeuthetonfit ἐστινestinIt is ἔξωexōout . βάλλουσινballousinis thrown αὐτόauto[and] it HoHe who ἔχωνechōnhas ὦταōtaears ἀκούεινakoueinto hear , ἀκουέτωakouetōlet him hear . ”
