2ἀνέβηνanebēnI went δὲde- κατὰkatain response to ἀποκάλυψινapokalypsina revelation καὶkaiand ἀνεθέμηνanethemēnset before αὐτοῖςautoisthem τὸtothe εὐαγγέλιονeuangeliongospel hothat κηρύσσωkēryssōI preach ἐνenamong τοῖςtoisthe ἔθνεσι,ethnesiGentiles κατ’kat’vvv ἰδίανidian[I spoke] privately δὲdeBut τοῖςtoisthe δοκοῦσι,dokousirecognized as leaders , μήπωςmeposno-how εἰςeisin κενὸνkenonvain . τρέχωtrechōI was running ēor ἔδραμονedramonhad already run
3ἀλλ’all’Yet οὐδὲoudenot even ΤίτοςTitosTitus , howho [was] σὺνsynwith ἐμοίemoime , ἝλληνHellēna Greek . ὤνōn[even though] he was ἠναγκάσθηēnankasthēwas compelled περιτμηθῆναιperitmēthēnaito be circumcised ,
4διὰdiabecause δὲde[This issue arose] τοὺςtous[some] παρεισάκτουςpareisaktousunder false pretenses ψευδαδέλφουςpseudadelphousfalse brothers οἵτινεςhoitines- παρεισῆλθονpareisēlthonhad come in κατασκοπῆσαιkataskopēsaito spy on τὴνtēn- ἐλευθερίανeleutherianfreedom ἡμῶνhēmōnour ἣνhēn- ἔχομενechomen- ἐνenin ΧριστῷChristōChrist ἸησοῦIēsouJesus , ἵναhinain order ἡμᾶςhēmasus . καταδουλώσωνται·katadoulosontaito enslave
5οἷςhoisto [them] οὐδὲoudevvv πρὸςprosfor ὥρανhōrana moment , εἴξαμενeixamenWe did {not} give in τῇ. . . ὑποταγῇhypotagē. . . ἵναhinaso that the ἀλήθειαalētheiatruth τοῦtouof the εὐαγγελίουeuangeliougospel διαμείνῃdiameinēwould remain πρὸςproswith ὑμᾶςhymasyou .
6ἈπὸApoas for δὲdeBut τῶνtōnthe δοκούντωνdokountōnhighly esteemed εἶναίeinai. . . τιti. . . — ὁποῖοίhopoioiwhatever ποτεpote. . . ἦσανēsanthey were οὐδένoudenvvv μοιmoito me ; διαφέρειdiaphereimakes no difference πρόσωπονprosōpon. . . ΘεὸςTheosGod ἀνθρώπουanthrōpou. . . — οὐouvvv λαμβάνειlambaneidoes not show favoritism ἐμοὶemoito me . γὰρgar- οἱhoithose δοκοῦντεςdokountesleaders οὐδὲνoudennothing προσανέθεντοprosanethentoadded
7ἀλλὰallavvv τοὐναντίονtounantionOn the contrary , ἰδόντεςidontesthey saw ὅτιhotithat πεπίστευμαιpepisteumaiI had been entrusted [to preach] τὸtothe εὐαγγέλιονeuangeliongospel τῆςtēsto the ἀκροβυστίαςakrobystiasuncircumcised , καθὼςkathōsjust as ΠέτροςPetrosPeter [ had been ] τῆςtēsto the περιτομῆςperitomēscircumcised .
8hothe [One who] γὰρgarFor ἐνεργήσαςenergēsaswas at work ΠέτρῳPetrōin Peter’s εἰςeis. . . ἀποστολὴνapostolēnapostleship τῆςtēsto the περιτομῆςperitomēscircumcised ἐνήργησεenergesewas also at work καὶkai. . . ἐμοὶemoiin my [apostleship] εἰςeisto τὰtathe ἔθνηethnēGentiles .
9καὶkaiAnd γνόντεςgnontesrecognizing τὴνtēnthe χάρινcharingrace τὴνtēn[that] δοθεῖσάνdotheisanhad been given , μοιmoiI ἸάκωβοςIakōbosJames καὶkai- , ΚηφᾶςKēphasCephas , καὶkaiand ἸωάννηςIōannēsJohn — οἱhoithose δοκοῦντεςdokountesreputed στῦλοιstyloipillars — εἶναιeinaito be δεξιὰςdexias[the] right hand ἔδωκανedōkangave ἐμοὶemoime καὶkaiand ΒαρνάβαBarnabaBarnabas κοινωνίαςkoinōniasof fellowship , ἵναhinaso that ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe [ should go ] εἰςeisto τὰtathe ἔθνηethnēGentiles , αὐτοὶautoithey δὲdeand εἰςeisto τὴνtēnthe περιτομήνperitomēncircumcised .
10μόνονmonon[They] only [asked us] τῶνtōnthe πτωχῶνptōchōnpoor , ἵναhinato μνημονεύωμενmnēmoneuōmenremember ho- καὶkai- ἐσπούδασαespoudasaI was eager αὐτὸautothe very τοῦτοtoutothing ποιῆσαιpoiēsaito do .
11ὍτεHoteWhen δὲdehowever , ἔλθῃelthēshould come ΠέτροςPetrosPeter [ had been ] εἰςeis. . . ἈντιόχειανAntiocheianAntioch , κατὰkatato πρόσωπονprosōponface , αὐτῷautōhis ἀντέστηνantestēnI opposed [him] ὅτιhotibecause κατεγνωσμένοςkategnōsmenosto be condemned . ἦνēnhe stood
12πρὸprobefore τοῦtou- γὰρgarFor ἐλθεῖνeltheincame τιναςtinascertain men ἀπὸapofrom ἸακώβουIakōbouJames , μετὰmetawith τῶνtōnthe ἐθνῶνethnōnGentiles . συνήσθιενsynēsthienhe used to eat ὅτεhotewhen δὲdeBut ἦλθονēlthonthey arrived , ὑπέστελλεupestellehe began to draw back καὶkaiand ἀφώριζενaphōrizenseparate ἑαυτόνheautonhimself , φοβούμενοςphoboumenosfor fear of τοὺςtousthose ἐκekin περιτομῆςperitomēs[the] circumcision [ group ] .
13καὶkai- συνυπεκρίθησανsynypekrithēsanjoined him in his hypocrisy αὐτῷautō. . . , καὶkaivvv οἱhoiThe λοιποὶloipoiother ἸουδαῖοιIoudaioiJews ὥστεhōsteso that καὶkaivvv ΒαρνάβαςBarnabasBarnabas συναπήχθηsynapēchthēwas led astray . αὐτῶνautōntheir τῇby ὑποκρίσειhypokriseihypocrisy
14Ἀλλ’All’- ὅτεhoteWhen εἶδονeidonI saw ὅτιhotithat οὐκoukvvv ὀρθοποδοῦσιorthopodousithey were not walking in line πρὸςproswith τὴνtēnthe ἀλήθειανalētheiantruth τοῦtouof the εὐαγγελίουeuangeliougospel , εἶπονeiponI said τῷ- ΠέτρῳPetrōin Peter’s ἔμπροσθενemprosthenin front of πάντωνpantōn[them] all , ΕἰEi“ If σὺsyyou , ἸουδαῖοςIoudaiosa Jew , ὑπάρχωνhyparchōnwho are ἐθνικῶςethnikōslike a Gentile ζῇςzēslive καὶkaiand οὐκouknot ἸουδαϊκῶςIoudaikōslike a Jew , τιti. . . — τὰtathe ἔθνηethnēGentiles . ἀναγκάζειςanankazeiscan you compel ἰουδαΐζεινioudaizeinto live like Jews ? ”
15ἩμεῖςHēmeisWe [who are] φύσειphyseiby birth ἸουδαῖοιIoudaioiJews καὶkaiand οὐκouknot ἐξexvvv ἐθνῶνethnōnGentile ἉμαρτωλοίHamartōloi“ sinners ”
16εἰδότεςeidotesknow δὲde- ὅτιhotithat οὐouvvv δικαιοῦταιdikaioutaiis not justified ἄνθρωποςanthrōposa man ἐξexby ἔργωνergōnworks νόμουnomouof [the] law , ἐὰνeanbut μὴ. . . διὰdiaby πίστεωςpisteōsfaith ἸησοῦIēsouin Jesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist . καὶkaiSo we, too ἡμεῖςhēmeis. . . , εἰςeisin ΧριστὸνChristonChrist ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus , ἐπιστεύσαμενepisteusamenhave believed ἵναhinathat δικαιωθῶμενdikaiōthōmenwe may be justified ἐκekby πίστεωςpisteōsfaith ΧριστοῦChristouin Christ καὶkaiand οὐκouknot ἐξexby ἔργωνergōnworks νόμουnomouof the law , διότιdiotibecause οὐouno one δικαιωθήσεταιdikaiōthēsetaiwill be justified . ἐξexby ἔργωνergōnworks νόμουnomouof the law πᾶσαpasa. . . σάρξsarx. . .
17ΕἰEiif , δὲdeBut ζητοῦντεςzētounteswhile we seek δικαιωθῆναιdikaiōthēnaito be justified ἐνenin ΧριστῷChristōChrist , εὑρέθημενheurethēmenare found to be καὶkai. . . αὐτοὶautoiwe ourselves ἁμαρτωλοίhamartōloisinners , ἆραaradoes that make ΧριστὸςChristosChrist ἁμαρτίαςhamartiasof sin ? διάκονοςdiakonosa minister μὴvvv γένοιτοgenoitoCertainly not !
18εἰeiIf γὰρgar- ha- κατέλυσαkatelysaI have already torn down , ταῦταtautawhat πάλινpalin. . . οἰκοδομῶoikodomōI rebuild παραβάτηνparabatēn[to be] a lawbreaker . ἐμαυτὸνemautonmyself ΣυνίστημιSynistēmiI commend
19ἐγὼegōI γὰρgarFor διὰdiathrough νόμουnomou[the] law νόμῳnomōto [the] law ἀπέθανονapethanondied ἵναhinaso that ΘεῷTheōto God . ζήσωzēsōI might live
20ΧριστῷChristōChrist , συνεσταύρωμαιsynestaurōmaiI have been crucified with ζῶlive , δὲdebut οὐκέτιouketino longer ἐγώegōI ζῇlives δὲdebut ἐνenin ἐμοὶemoime . ΧριστόςChristosChrist hoThe [life] δὲde- νῦνnynvvv ζῶI live ἐνenin σαρκίsarki[the] body , ἐνenin πίστειpisteifaith ζῶI live τῇ- τοῦtouin the ΥἱοῦHuiouSon τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , τοῦtouwho ἀγαπήσαντόςagapēsantosloved μεmeme καὶkaiand παραδόντοςparadontosgave Himself up ἑαυτὸνheauton. . . ὑπὲρhyperfor ἐμοῦemoume .
21ΟὐκOukvvv ἀθετῶathetōI do not set aside τὴνtēnthe χάρινcharingrace τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God . εἰeiif γὰρgarFor διὰdiathrough νόμουnomouthe law , δικαιοσύνηdikaiosynērighteousness [comes] ἄραara- ΧριστὸςChristosChrist δωρεὰνdōreanfor nothing . ἀπέθανενapethanendied
