2καὶkaiand ἰδόντεςidontesthey saw τινὰςtinassome τῶνtōnof μαθητῶνmathētōndisciples αὐτοῦautouHis κοιναῖςkoinais[that were] defiled — χερσί,khersihands , τοῦτ’tout’that ἔστινestinis , ἀνίπτοιςaniptoisunwashed . ἐσθίονταςesthiontaskeep on eating ἄρτουςartous. . . ἐμέμψαντοemempsantothey found fault
3ΟἱHoithe γὰρgarNow ΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioiPharisees καὶkaiand πάντεςpantesall οἱhoithe ἸουδαῖοιIoudaioiJews ἐὰνeanuntil μὴ. . . πυγμῇpygmēceremonially . νίψωνταιnipsōntaithey wash τὰςtas[their] χεῖραςcheirashands οὐκoukvvv ἐσθίουσι,esthiousikeep on eating κρατοῦντεςkratountesin holding τὴνtēnto the παράδοσινparadosintradition τῶνtōnof the πρεσβυτέρωνpresbyterōnelders ,
4καὶkaiand ἀπὸapofrom ἀγορᾶςagorasthe market , ἐὰνeanunless μὴ. . . βαπτίσωνται*baptisōntaithey wash . οὐκoukvvv ἐσθίουσι·esthiousikeep on eating καὶkaiAnd ἄλλαallaother πολλάpollamany ἐστινestinthere are ha- παρέλαβονparelabontraditions for them κρατεῖνkrateinto observe , βαπτισμοὺςbaptismous[including] the washing ποτηρίωνpotēriōnof cups , καὶkai- ξεστῶνxestōnpitchers , καὶkai- χαλκίωνchalkiōnkettles , ‹καὶkaiand κλινῶν›klinōncouches for dining .
5ἜπειταEpeitaThen ἐπερωτῶσινeperōtōsinquestioned αὐτὸνauton[Jesus] : οἱhoi- ΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioiPharisees καὶkaiand οἱhoi- γραμματεῖςgrammateisscribes διατίdiatiwhy οὐounot περιπατοῦσινperipatousinwalk οἱhoi- μαθηταίmathētaidisciples σουsou{do} Your κατὰkataaccording to τὴνtēnthe παράδοσινparadosintradition τῶνtōnof the πρεσβυτέρωνpresbyterōnelders ? ἀλλ’all’but ἀνίπτοιςaniptoisunwashed . χερσίνchersin[with] hands ἐσθίουσιesthiousikeep on eating τῶνtōnof ἄρτονarton. . .
6Ho- δὲde- εἶπενeipenJesus answered αὐτοῖςautoisthem , ὅτιhoti- ΚαλῶςKalōscorrectly προεφήτευσενproepheteusenprophesied ἨσαΐαςĒsaias“ Isaiah περὶperiabout ὑμῶνhymōnyou τῶνtōn- ὑποκριτῶνhypokritōnhypocrites , ὡςhōsas γέγραπταιgegraptaiit is written : ΟὗτοςHoutos‘ These ho- λαὸςlaospeople τοῖςtoiswith [their] χείλεσίkheilesilips , μεmeMe τιμᾷtimahonor - δὲdebut καρδίαkardiahearts αὐτῶνautōntheir πόρρωporrōfar ἀπέχειapecheiare ἀπ’ap’from ἐμοῦemouMe .
7ΜάτηνMatēnin vain ; δὲde- σέβονταίsebontaiThey worship μεmeMe ΔιδάσκοντεςDidaskontesthey teach διδασκαλίαςdidaskalias[as] doctrine ἐντάλματαentalmata[the] precepts ἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōnof men .’
8ἈφέντεςAphentesYou have disregarded γὰρgarFor τὴνtēn[own] ἐντολὴνentolēncommand τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God κρατεῖτεkrateiteto keep τὴνtēnthe παράδοσινparadosintradition τῶνtōn- ἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōnof men . ” βαπτισμοὺςbaptismous[including] the washing ξεστῶνxestōnpitchers , καὶkai- ποτηρίωνpotēriōnof cups , καὶkai- ἄλλαallaother παρόμοιαparomoiasuch [matters] . ” τοιαῦταtoiautaso πολλὰpollain many ποιεῖτεpoieiteyou do
9καὶkaiAnd ἔλεγενelegen[and] said αὐτοῖςautois- , ΚαλῶςKalōs“ vvv ἀθετεῖτεatheteiteYou neatly set aside τὴνtēnthe ἐντολὴνentolēncommand τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God ἵναhinato τὴνtēn[own] παράδοσινparadosintradition . ὑμῶνhymōnyour τηρήσητεtērēsētemaintain
10ΜωϋσῆςMōusēsMoses γὰρgarFor εἴπῃeipēsays ΤίμαTima‘ Honor τὸνton- πατέραpaterafather σουsouyour καὶkaiand τὴνtēn- μητέραmēteramother ’ σουsouyour καὶkaiand Ho‘ Anyone who κακολογῶνkakologōncurses πατέραpatera[his] father ēor μητέραmēteramother θανάτῳthanatōvvv τελευτάτωteleutatōmust be put to death .’
11ὑμεῖςhymeisyou δὲdeBut λέγετεlegetesay that ἘὰνEanif εἴπῃeipēsays ἄνθρωποςanthrōposa man τῷto [his] πατρὶpatrifather ēor τῇ- μητρίmētrimother , ΚορβᾶνKorban[is] Corban ’ ho(that ἐστι,estiis ΔῶρονDōrona gift devoted [to God] ) , ho(that ἐὰνean. . . ἐξexfrom ἐμοῦemoume ὠφεληθῇςōphelēthēsyou would have received
12καίkaiand οὐκέτιouketino longer ἀφίετεaphietepermitted αὐτὸνautonhe [is] οὐδὲνoudenanything ποιῆσαιpoiēsaito do τῷfor his πατρὶpatrifather αὐτοῦautouHis - τῇby μητρίmētrimother . αὐτοῦautouHis
13ἀκυροῦντεςakyrountes[Thus] you nullify τὸνtonthe λόγονlogonword τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God τῇby παραδόσειparadoseitradition ὑμῶνhymōn[the] - παρεδώκατεparedōkateyou have handed down . καὶkaiAnd παρόμοιαparomoiasuch [matters] . ” τοιαῦταtoiautaso πολλὰpollain many ποιεῖτεpoieiteyou do
14καὶkaiAnd προσκαλεσάμενοςproskalesamenos[Jesus] called πάνταpanta([Thus] all τὸνton. . . ὄχλονochloncrowd [to Him] ἔλεγενelegen[and] said αὐτοῖςautois- , ἀκούετεakoueteyou listen . μουmouMe πάντεςpantes“ All of you , καὶkaiand συνίετεsynieteunderstand ?
15οὐδένoudenNothing ἐστινestin- ἔξωθενexōthenfrom the outside τοῦtoua ἀνθρώπουanthrōpouman εἰσπορευόμενονeisporeuomenonthat enters εἰςeis. . . αὐτὸνauton- ho- δύναταιdynataican αὐτόνautonhim ; κοινῶσαιkoinōsaidefile ἀλλὰallabut τὰtathe things ἐκπορευόμενάekporeuomenathat come ἐστιestiis τὰtathe things κοινοῦνταkoinountadefile τὸνton- ἄνθρωπονanthrōpon[him] .”
16εἰeionly for τιςtisa ἔχειecheihas ὦταōtaears . ἀκούεινakoueinhear ἀκουέτωakouetōlet him hear . ”
17καὶkaiand ὅτεhoteAfter εἰσῆλθενeisēlthen[Jesus] had left εἰςeis[and gone] into οἶκονoikon[the] house , ἀπὸapo. . . τοῦtouthe ὄχλουochloucrowd ἐπηρώτωνepērōtōninquired about αὐτὸνauton. . . οἱhoi- μαθηταὶmathētaidisciples αὐτοῦautouHis περὶperiabout τῆςtēs- παραβολῆςparabolēs[this] parable :
18ΚαὶKai- λέγειlegei. . . αὐτοῖςautoisthem Οὕτωouto[this] ΚαὶKai- ὑμεῖςhymeisyou ἀσύνετοίasynetoidull ? ” ἐστεeste“ Are οὔπωoupōvvv νοεῖτεnoeiteDo you not understand ? ὅτιhoti- πᾶνpanNothing τὸtothat ἔξωθενexōthenfrom the outside εἰσπορευόμενονeisporeuomenonenters εἰςeis. . . τὸνtona ἄνθρωπονanthrōponman οὐouvvv δύναταιdynataican αὐτὸνautonhim , κοινῶσαιkoinōsaidefile
19ὅτιhotibecause οὐκoukvvv εἰσπορεύεταιeisporeuetaiit does not enter αὐτοῦautouhis εἰςeis. . . τὴνtēn- καρδίανkardianheart , ἀλλὰallabut εἰςeis. . . τὴνtēnthe κοιλίανkoilianstomach καὶkaiand then εἰςeis. . . τὸνton. . . ἀφεδρῶναaphedrōna. . . .” ἐκπορεύεταιekporeuetaiis eliminated καθαρίζωνkatharizōnare clean .) πάνταpanta([Thus] all τὰta- βρώματαbrōmatafoods
20ἔλεγεelege[Jesus] declared δὲde- ὅτιhoti- : ΤὸTo“ What ἐκekout of τοῦtoua ἀνθρώπουanthrōpouman , ἐκπορευόμενονekporeuomenoncomes ἐκεῖνοekeinothat [is what] κοινοῖkoinoidefiles τὸνton- ἄνθρωπονanthrōpon[him] .
21ἔσωθενesōthenwithin γὰρgarFor ἐκekfrom τῆςtēsthe καρδίαςkardiashearts τῶνtōn- ἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōnof men οἱhoi- διαλογισμοὶdialogismoithoughts , οἱhoi- κακοὶkakoievil ἐκπορεύονταιekporeuontaicome μοιχεῖαιmoicheiaiadultery , πορνεῖαιporneiaisexual immorality , φόνοιphonoimurder ,
22κλοπαίklopaitheft , πλεονεξίαιpleonexiaigreed , πονηρίαιponēriaiwickedness , δόλοςdolosdeceit , ἀσέλγειαaselgeiadebauchery , ὀφθαλμὸςophthalmosenvy πονηρόςponēros. . . , βλασφημίαblasphēmiaslander , ὑπερηφανίαhyperēphaniaarrogance , ἀφροσύνηaphrosynē[and] foolishness .
23πάνταpantaAll ταῦταtautathese τὰta- πονηρὰponēraevils ἔσωθενesōthenfrom within , ἐκπορεύεταιekporeuetaicome καὶkaiand κοινοῖkoinoi[these are what] defile τὸνtona ἄνθρωπονanthrōponman . ”
24καὶkaiand ἘκεῖθενEkeithenthat place ἀναστὰςanastas[Jesus] left ἀπῆλθενapēlthen[and] went εἰςeisto τὰtathe μεθόριαmethoriaborders ΤύρουTyrouof Tyre . ΚαὶKai- ΣιδῶνοςSidōnosSidon ΚαὶKaiThen εἰσελθὼνeiselthōnHe entered εἰςeis. . . οἰκίανoikian[a] house , οὐδέναoudena. . . ἤθελεethelerefused γνῶναιgnōnaito know [He was there] , ΚαὶKai- οὐκoukvvv ἠδυνήθη*ēdynēthēwas unable λαθεῖνlatheinto escape their notice .
25ἀκούσασαakousasaheard γάρgar“ For γυνὴgynēwoman περὶperiabout αὐτοῦautouJesus , ἧςhēswhose εἶχεeikhewho had τὸto- θυγάτριονthygatrionlittle daughter αὐτῆςautēs. . . πνεῦμαpneumaspirit ἀκάθαρτονakatharton[an] unclean ἐλθοῦσαelthousa[and] she came προσέπεσεprosepese[and] fell down before πρὸςprosat τοὺςtous- πόδαςpodasfeet . αὐτοῦautouHis
26- δὲdeNow γυνὴgynēwoman ἦνēnshe was ἙλληνίςHellēnisa Greek ΣυροφοινίκισσαSyrophoinikissaSyrophoenician τῷof γένειgeneiorigin , καὶkaiand ἠρώταērōtashe kept asking αὐτὸνauton[Jesus] ἵναhina- τὸtothe δαιμόνιονdaimoniondemon ἐκβάλῃekbalēto drive ἐκekout of τῆςtēs- θυγατρὸςthygatrosdaughter . αὐτῆςautēsher
27ho(which δὲdeBut ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus εἶπενeipen[Jesus] told αὐτῇautēher , ἌφεςApheslet πρῶτονprōton“ First χορτασθῆναιchortasthēnaihave their fill , ” τὰtathe τέκναteknachildren οὐounot γάρgar“ For ἐστιestiis καλόνkalonright λαβεῖνlabeinto take τὸνtonthe ἄρτονartonbread τῶνtōn- τέκνωνteknōnchildren’s καὶkaiand τοῖςtoisto the κυναρίοιςkynarioisdogs . ” βαλεῖνbaleintoss [it]
28- δὲde- ἀπεκρίθηapekrithēshe replied καὶkai. . . λέγειlegei. . . αὐτῷautō. . . , ναίnaiYes , ΚύριεKyrieLord , ” καὶkai. . . τὰtathe κυνάριαkynariadogs ὑποκάτωhypokatōunder τῆςtēsthe τραπέζηςtrapezēstable ἐσθίουσινesthiousineat ἀπὸapo. . . τῶνtōnthe ψιχίωνpsichiōncrumbs . ” τῶνtōn- παιδίωνpaidiōnchildren’s
29ΚαὶKaiThen εἶπενeipen[Jesus] told αὐτῇautēher , ΔιὰDia“ Because of τοῦτονtoutonthis τὸνton- λόγονlogonanswer , ὕπαγεhypageyou may go . ἐξελήλυθεexeleluthehas left τὸtoThe δαιμόνιονdaimoniondemon ἐκek. . . τῆςtēs- θυγατρόςthygatrosdaughter . ” σουsouyour
30καὶkaiAnd ἀπελθοῦσαapelthousashe went εἰςeisvvv τὸνtonvvv οἶκονoikonhome αὐτῆςautēsvvv εὕρῃheurēfinds [them] τὸto[her] παιδίονpaidionchild βεβλημένονbeblēmenonlying ἐπὶepion τὴνtēnthe κλίνηνklinēnbed , καὶkaiand τὸtothe δαιμόνιονdaimoniondemon ἐξεληλυθόςexelēlythoswas gone .
31ΚαὶKaiThen πάλινpalin. . . ἐξελθὼνexelthōn[Jesus] left ἐκek. . . τῶνtōnthe ὁρίωνhoriōnregion ΤύρουTyrouof Tyre ΚαὶKaiThen ΣιδῶνοςSidōnosSidon ἔλθῃelthēshould come πρὸςprosat τὴνtēnthe θάλασσανthalassanSea τῆςtēs- ΓαλιλαίαςGalilaiasof Galilee ἀνὰana[and] into μέσονmeson. . . τῶνtōnthe ὁρίωνhoriōnregion ΔεκαπόλεωςDekapoleōsof [the] Decapolis .
32ΚαὶKai- φέρουσινpherousin[Some people] brought αὐτῷautōto Him κωφὸνkōphona man who was deaf μογιλάλονmogilalonhardly able to speak , καὶkaiand παρακαλοῦσινparakalousinthey begged αὐτὸνauton[Jesus] ἵναhina- ἐπιθῇepithēto place αὐτῷautōon him . τὴνtēn[His] χεῖραcheirahand
33ΚαὶKai[So] ἀπολαβόμενοςapolabomenos[Jesus] took him αὐτὸνauton. . . ἀπὸapoaway from τοῦtouthe ὄχλουochloucrowd , κατ’kat’aside ἰδίανidianprivately , ἔβαλεebaletossed τοὺςtous- δακτύλουςdaktylousfingers αὐτοῦautou[the man’s] εἰςeisinto τὰta- ὦταōtaears . αὐτοῦautou[the man’s] καὶkaiThen πτύσαςptysasHe spit ἥψατοhēpsato[and] touched τῆςtēs- γλώσσηςglōssēstongue . αὐτοῦautou[the man’s]
34καὶkaiAnd ἀναβλέψαςanablepsaslooking up εἰςeisto τὸνton- οὐρανὸνouranonheaven , ἐστέναξεestenaxeHe sighed deeply καὶkaiand λέγειlegeisaid αὐτῷautōto him , ἘφφαθάEphphatha“ Ephphatha ! ” ho(which ἐστιestiis ΔιανοίχθητιDianoichthēti“ Be opened !” ).
35καὶkai- εὐθέωςeutheōsat once . διηνοίχθησανdiēnoichthēsanwere opened αὐτοῦautou[the man’s] αἱhai- ἀκοαίakoaiears καὶ»kaiand ἐλύθηelythēwas released , hovvv δεσμὸςdesmosvvv τῆςtēsvvv γλώσσηςglōssēstongue αὐτοῦautouhis καὶ»kaiand ἐλάλειelaleihe began to speak ὀρθῶςorthōsplainly .
36ΚαὶKai- διεστείλατοdiesteilato[Jesus] ordered αὐτοῖςautoisthem ἵναhina- μηδενὶmēdeni. . . . εἴπωσινeipōsinspeak ὅσονhosonthe more δὲdeBut αὐτὸςautoshe αὐτοῖςautoisHe διεστέλλετοdiestelletoordered μᾶλλονmallon. . . περισσότερονperissoteronthe more widely ἐκήρυσσονekēryssonthey proclaimed [it] .
37καὶkai- ὑπερπερισσῶςhyperperissōs. . . ἐξεπλήσσοντοexeplēssonto[The people] were utterly astonished λέγοντεςlegontes[and] said , ΚαλῶςKalōswell ! πάνταpantaall things πεποίηκε·pepoiekehas done καὶkaieven τοὺςtousthe κωφοὺςkōphousdeaf ποιεῖpoieiHe makes ἀκούεινakoueinhear καὶkaiand [τοὺς]tousthe ἀλάλουςalalousmute λαλεῖνlaleinspeak ! ”
