1ΧριστοῦChristouChrist οὖνounTherefore παθόντοςpathontossuffered ὑπὲρhyperfor ἡμῶνhēmōnus , σαρκίsarkiin [the] flesh , καὶkaieven ὑμεῖςhymeis- τὴνtēnthe αὐτὴνautēnsame ἔννοιανennoianresolve , ὁπλίσασθεhoplisasthearm yourselves with ὅτιhotibecause ὁhoanyone who παθὼνpathōnhas suffered ἐνenvvv σαρκὶsarkion earth πέπαυταιpepautaiis done with ἁμαρτίαςhamartiassin .

2εἰςeisConsequently , τὸto- μηκέτιmēketivvv ἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōnfor human ἐπιθυμίαιςepithymiaispassions , ἀλλὰallabut θελήματιthelēmatifor [the] will ΘεοῦTheouof God . τῶνtōnas the ἐπίλοιπονepiloiponremaining ἐνenvvv σαρκὶsarkion earth βιῶσαιbiōsaihe does not live out χρόνονchronontime

3ἀρκετὸςarketos[you have spent] enough γὰρgarFor ὑμῖνhymin- ᾧhōto whom παρεληλυθὼςparelēlythōsin the past χρόνοςchronostime τοῦtou- βίουbioulife , τὸtothe θέλημαthelēmawill τῶνtōnfor those who ἐθνῶνethnōnGentiles : κατεργάσασθαι,katergasasthaicarrying out πεπορευμένουςpeporeumenousliving ἐνenin ἀσελγείαιςaselgeiaisdebauchery , ἐπιθυμίαιςepithymiaislust , οἰνοφλυγίαιςoinophlygiaisdrunkenness , κώμοιςkōmoisorgies , πότοιςpotoiscarousing , καὶkaiand ἀθεμίτοιςathemitoisdetestable εἰδωλολατρίαιςeidōlolatriaisidolatry .

4ἘνEnBecause of ᾧhōthis , ξενίζονταιxenizontaithey consider it strange μὴmēnot συντρεχόντωνsyntrechontōnto plunge with [them] ὑμῶνhymōnof you εἰςeisinto τὴνtēnthe αὐτὴνautēnsame τῆςtēs- ἀσωτίαςasōtiasof reckless indiscretion , ἀνάχυσινanachysinflood βλασφημοῦντεςblasphēmountes[and] they heap abuse on you .

5οἳhoi[But they] ἀποδώσουσινapodōsousinwill have to give λόγονlogonan account τῷtōto Him who ἑτοίμωςhetoimōsready ἔχοντιechontiis κρῖναιkrinaito judge ζῶνταςzōntas[the] living καὶkaiand νεκρούςnekrous[the] dead .

6εἰςeisvvv τοῦτοtoutoThat is why γὰρgarvvv καὶkaiand νεκροῖςnekroisto [those who are now] dead , εὐηγγελίσθηeuēngelisthēthe gospel was preached ἵναhinaso that κριθῶσιkrithōsithey might be judged μὲνmen- κατὰkataas ἀνθρώπουςanthrōpousmen σαρκίsarkiin [the] flesh , ζῶσιzōsilive δὲdebut κατὰkataaccording to ΘεὸνTheonGod πνεύματιpneumatiin [the] spirit .

7ΠάντωνPantōnof all [things] δὲde- τὸtoThe τέλοςtelosend ἤγγικε·eggikeis near . σωφρονήσατεsōphronēsatebe clear-minded οὖνounTherefore καὶkaiand νήψατεnēpsatesober , εἰςeisso that τὰςtas- προσευχάςproseuchasyou can pray .

8πρὸproAbove πάντωνpantōnall , δὲde- τὴνtēn- εἰςeisvvv ἑαυτοὺςheautousone another ἀγάπηνagapēnlove ἐκτενῆektenēdeeply , ἔχοντεςechontesvvv ὅτιhotibecause ἡhēthe ἀγάπηagapēlove καλύψειkalypseicover over πλῆθοςplēthosa multitude ἁμαρτιῶνhamartiōnof sins .

9φιλόξενοιphiloxenoiShow hospitality εἰςeisto ἀλλήλουςallēlousone another ἄνευaneuwithout γογγυσμῶνgongysmōncomplaining

10ἕκαστοςhekastoseach [of you] καθὼςkathōs- ἔλαβεelabevvv χάρισμαcharismagift εἰςeis[should use] ἑαυτοὺςheautousone another . αὐτὸautowhatever διακονοῦντεςdiakonountesto serve ὡςhōs[he should speak] as καλοὶkaloigood οἰκονόμοιoikonomoistewards ποικίληςpoikilēsof [the] manifold χάριτοςcharitosgrace ΘεοῦTheouof God ,

11εἴeiIf τιςtisanyone λαλεῖlaleispeaks , ὡςhōs[he should speak] as λόγιαlogiaone conveying the words of God . ΘεοῦTheouvvv εἴeiIf τιςtisanyone διακονεῖdiakoneiserves , ὡςhōs[he should serve] ἐξexwith ἰσχύοςischyos[the] strength ὡςhōs[he should serve] χορηγεῖchorēgeiprovides , ὁho- ΘεόςTheosGod ἵναhinaso that ἐνenin πᾶσιpasiall δοξάζηταιdoxazētaimay be glorified ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod διὰdiathrough ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist , ᾧhōto whom ἐστινestinbe ἡhēthe δόξαdoxaglory καὶkaiand τὸtothe κράτοςkratospower εἰςeisvvv τοὺςtousvvv αἰῶναςaiōnasforever τῶνtōn[and] αἰώνωνaiōnōnever . ἀμήνamēnAmen .

12ἈγαπητοίAgapētoiBeloved , μὴmē{do} not ξενίζεσθεxenizesthebe surprised at τῇtēthe ἐνenupon ὑμῖνhyminyou , πυρώσειpyrōseifiery πρὸςpros- πειρασμὸνpeirasmontrial ὑμῖνhymin- γινομένῃginomenēthat has come ὡςhōsas though ξένουxenousomething strange ὑμῖνhyminto you . συμβαίνοντοςsymbainontoswere happening

13ἀλλὰallaBut καθὸkathothat κοινωνεῖτεkoinōneiteyou share τοῖςtoisin the τοῦtou- ΧριστοῦChristouof Christ , παθήμασι,pathemasisufferings χαίρετεchaireterejoice ἵναhinaso that καὶkai. . . ἐνenat τῇtēthe ἀποκαλύψειapokalypseirevelation τῆςtēsof δόξηςdoxēsglory . αὐτοῦautouHis χαρῆτεcharēteyou may be overjoyed ἀγαλλιώμενοιagalliōmenoi. . .

14ΕἰEiIf ὀνειδίζεσθεoneidizestheyou are insulted ἐνenfor ὀνόματιonomati[the] name ΧριστοῦChristouof Christ , μακάριοιmakarioi[you are] blessed , ὅτιhotibecause τὸtothe τῆςtēs- δόξηςdoxēsof glory καὶkaiand δυνάμεωςdynameōspower καὶkaiand τὸto- τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God ΠνεῦμαPneumaSpirit ἐφ’eph’on ὑμᾶςhymasyou . ἀναπαύεταιanapauetairests κατὰkataaccording to μὲνmen- αὐτοὺςautousthem βλασφημεῖταιblasphēmeitaiis blasphemed κατὰkataas δὲdebut ὑμᾶςhymasyou . δοξάζηταιdoxazētaimay be glorified

15μὴmē{do} not γάρgarIndeed , τιςtis[none] ὑμῶνhymōnof you πασχέτωpaschetōshould suffer ὡςhōsas φονεὺςphoneusa murderer ἢēor κλέπτηςkleptēsthief ἢēor κακοποιὸςkakopoioswrongdoer , ἢēor ὡςhōseven as ἀλλοτριοεπίσκοπος·allotrioepiskoposa meddler .

16εἰeiif [you suffer] δὲdeBut ὡςhōsas ΧριστιανόςChristianosa Christian , μὴmēvvv αἰσχυνέσθωaischynesthōdo not be ashamed , δοξαζέτωdoxazetōglorify δὲdebut τὸνton- ΘεὸνTheonGod ἐνen[that you bear] τῷtō- μέρειmereicomparison to τούτῳtoutōthat

17ὅτιhotiFor [it is] ὁho- καιρὸςkairostime [for] τοῦtou- ἄρξασθαιarxasthaito begin τὸto- κρίμαkrimajudgment ἀπὸapowith τοῦtouthe οἴκουoikoufamily τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God ; εἰeiif δὲdeand πρῶτονprōtonit begins ἀφ’aph’with ἡμῶνhēmōnus , τίtiwhat [will] τὸtothe τέλοςtelosoutcome [be] τῶνtōnfor those who ἀπειθούντωνapeithountōndisobey τῷtōthe τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God ? εὐαγγελίῳeuangeliōgospel

18καὶkaiAnd , ΕἰEi“ If ὁhothe δίκαιοςdikaiosrighteous μόλιςmolisit is hard for σώζεταιsōzetaito be saved , ὁhothe ἀσεβὴςasebēsungodly καὶkaiand ἁμαρτωλὸςhamartōlos[the] sinner ?” ποῦpouwhat φανεῖταιphaneitaiwill become of

19ὭστεHōsteSo then καὶkai. . . , οἱhoithose who πάσχοντεςpaschontessuffer κατὰkataaccording to τὸto- θέλημαthelēmawill τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod’s ὡςhōsas πιστῷpistōto [their] faithful ΚτίστῃKtistēCreator παρατιθέσθωσανparatithesthōsanshould entrust τὰςtas- ψυχὰςpsychassouls αὐτῶνautōntheir ἐνenand continue ἀγαθοποιΐᾳagathopoiiato do good .
