1ἜκριναEkrinaI made up my mind δέdeNow ἐμαυτῷemautō. . . τοῦτοtouto. . . τὸto- μὴmēnot πάλινpalinanother ἐνenvvv λύπῃlypēpainful {visit} ἐλθεῖνeltheinto make πρὸςprosto ὑμᾶςhymasyou .
2εἰeiif γὰρgarFor ἐγὼegōI λυπῶlypōgrieve ὑμᾶςhymasyou , καὶkai- τίςtiswho ἐστινestin[would share] ὁhothose [whom] εὐφραίνωνeuphrainōnto cheer μεmeme εἰeibut μὴmē. . . ὁhothose [whom] λυπούμενοςlypoumenoshave grieved ? ἐξex- ἐμοῦemouI
3καὶkai- ἔγραψαegrapsaI wrote ὑμῖνhyminyou τοῦτοtoutoas I did αὐτὸauto. . . ἵναhinaso that μὴmēvvv ἐλθὼνelthōnon my arrival λύπηνlypēnsaddened ἔχωechō. . . ἀφ’aph’by [those] ὧνhōnwho ἔδειedeiought {to make} μεmeme χαίρεινchaireinrejoice . πεποιθὼςpepoithōsI had confidence ἐπὶepiin πάνταςpantasall of ὑμᾶςhymasyou , ὅτιhotithat ἡhē- ἐμὴemēmy χαρὰcharajoy . πάντωνpantōn- ὑμῶνhymōnyou ἐστινestin[would share]
4ἐκekout of γὰρgarFor πολλῆςpollēsgreat θλίψεωςthlipseōsdistress καὶkaiand συνοχῆςsynochēsanguish καρδίαςkardiasof heart , ἔγραψαegrapsaI wrote ὑμῖνhyminyou διὰdiathrough πολλῶνpollōnmany δακρύωνdakryōntears οὐχouchnot ἵναhinato λυπηθῆτεlypēthētegrieve you ἀλλὰallabut τὴνtēn- ἀγάπηνagapēnI love you ἵναhinato γνῶτεgnōtelet you know ἣνhēn. . . ἔχωechō. . . περισσοτέρωςperissoterōshow much εἰςeis. . . ὑμᾶςhymas. . . .
5ΕἰEiif δέdeNow τιςtisanyone λελύπηκενlelypēkenhas caused grief , οὐκoukvvv ἐμὲememe λελύπηκενlelypēkenhe has not grieved ἀλλὰallabut ἀπὸapoto μέρουςmeroussome degree , ἵναhinato μὴmēnot ἐπιβαρῶepibarōoverstate [it] . πάνταςpantasall ὑμᾶςhymasof you —
6ἱκανὸνhikanon[is] sufficient τῷtōfor τοιούτῳtoioutōhim . ἡhē[imposed on him] ἐπιτιμίαepitimiapunishment αὕτηhautē- ἡhē[imposed on him] ὑπὸhypoby τῶνtōnthe πλειόνωνpleionōnmajority
7ὥστεhōsteSo τοὐναντίονtounantioninstead μᾶλλονmallon. . . , ὑμᾶςhymasyou χαρίσασθαιcharisasthaiought to forgive καὶkaiand παρακαλέσαιparakalesaicomfort [him] , μήπωςmeposno-how τῇtēby περισσοτέρᾳperissoteraexcessive λύπῃlypēsorrow . καταποθῇkatapothēwill not be overwhelmed ὁho- τοιοῦτοςtoioutoshe
8διὸdioTherefore παρακαλῶparakalōI urge ὑμᾶςhymasyou κυρῶσαιkyrōsaito reaffirm εἰςeisfor αὐτὸνautonhim . ἀγάπηνagapēn[your] love
9εἰςeisfor τοῦτοtoutovvv γὰρgarvvv καὶkaivvv ἔγραψαegrapsain writing [you] ἵναhina[was] to γνῶgnōsee τὴνtēn- δοκιμὴνdokimēnwould stand the test ὑμῶνhymōnyou εἰeiif εἰςeisin πάνταpantaeverything . ὑπήκοοίhypēkooibe obedient ἐστεeste[and]
10ᾧhōanyone δέde- τιti. . . , χαρίζεσθεcharizestheIf you forgive καὶkaiAnd ἐγὼegōI καὶkaiAnd γὰρgar- ἐγὼegōI εἴeiif τιtianything , κεχάρισμαιkecharismaiI have forgiven ὃho[it] κεχάρισμαιkecharismaihave forgiven δι’di’for your sake ὑμᾶςhymas. . . , ἐνenin προσώπῳprosōpō[the] presence ΧριστοῦChristouof Christ
11ἵναhinain order that μὴmēvvv πλεονεκτηθῶμενpleonektēthōmenshould not outwit us . ὑπὸhypo- τοῦtou- ΣατανᾶSatanaSatan οὐouvvv γὰρgarFor αὐτοῦautouof his τὰta- νοήματαnoēmataschemes . ἀγνοοῦμενagnooumenwe are not unaware
12ἘλθὼνElthōnwhen I went δὲdeNow εἰςeisto τὴνtēn- ΤρῳάδαTrōadaTroas εἰςeis[to preach] τὸtothe εὐαγγέλιονeuangeliongospel τοῦtou- ΧριστοῦChristouof Christ καὶkaiand θύραςthyrasa door μοιmoifor me ἀνεῳγμένηςaneōgmenēsstood open ἐνenin ΚυρίῳKyriō[the] Lord ,
13οὐκoukno ἔσχηκαeschēkaI had ἄνεσινanesinpeace τῷtōin πνεύματίpneumatispirit , μουmoumy τοῦtou- μεme[because] I εὑρεῖνheureindid not find μὴmēvvv ΤίτονTitonTitus [there] . τὸνton- ἀδελφόνadelphonbrother μουmoumy ἀλλὰalla[So] ἀποταξάμενοςapotaxamenosI said goodbye αὐτοῖςautoisto them ἐξῆλθονexēlthon[and] went on εἰςeisto ΜακεδονίανMakedonianMacedonia .
14ΤῷTōto δὲdeBut ΘεῷTheōGod , χάριςcharisthanks [be] ΤῷTōto πάντοτεpantotealways θριαμβεύοντιthriambeuontileads us triumphantly as captives ἡμᾶςhēmas. . . ἐνenin τῷtō- ΧριστῷChristōChrist καὶkaiand τὴνtēnthe ὀσμὴνosmēnfragrance τῆςtēsof γνώσεωςgnōseōs[the] knowledge αὐτοῦautouof Him . φανεροῦντιphanerountispreads δι’di’through ἡμῶνhēmōnus ἐνenvvv παντὶpantivvv τόπῳtopōeverywhere
15ὅτιhotiFor ΧριστοῦChristouof Christ εὐωδίαeuōdia[the] sweet aroma ἐσμὲνesmenwe are τῷtō- ΘεῷTheōto God ἐνenamong τοῖςtoisthose who are σωζομένοιςsōzomenoisbeing saved καὶkaiand ἐνen- τοῖςtoisthose who are ἀπολλυμένοιςapollymenoisperishing .
16οἷςhoisTo [the] one , μὲνmen[we are] ὀσμὴosmēan odor θανάτουthanatoudeath εἰςeis[and] θάνατονthanatondemise ; οἷςhoisto the other , δὲde- ὀσμὴosmēa fragrance ζωῆςzōēsthat brings life εἰςeis. . . ζωήνzōēn. . . . καὶkaiAnd πρὸςprosfor ταῦταtautasuch [a task] ? τίςtiswho [is] ἱκανόςhikanosqualified
17ΟὐOunot γάρgarFor ἐσμενesmenwe are ὡςhōslike οἱhoiwho λοιποὶloipoiother καπηλεύοντεςkapēleuontespeddle τὸνtonthe λόγονlogonword τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God {for profit} . ἀλλ’all’On the contrary , ὡςhōswith ἐξex. . . εἰλικρινείαςeilikrineiassincerity , ἀλλ’all’- ὡςhōsas ἐκekmen sent from ΘεοῦTheouGod . κατενώπιονkatenopionahead [of you] , τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God {for profit} . ἐνenin ΧριστῷChristōChrist λαλοῦμενlaloumenwe speak
