2ἤρξαντοērxantothey began δὲdeAnd κατηγορεῖνkatēgoreinto accuse αὐτοῦautouHim , λέγοντεςlegontessaying , ΤοῦτονToutonthis [man] εὕρομενeuromen“ We found διαστρέφονταdiastrephontasubverting τὸto- ἔθνοςethnosnation , καὶkai- κωλύονταkōlyontaforbidding ΚαίσαριKaisarito Caesar , φόρουςphorouspayment of taxes διδόναιdidonai. . . λέγονταlegontaproclaiming ἑαυτὸνheautonHimself ΧριστὸνChristonChrist , βασιλέαbasileaa King . ” εἶναιeinaito be
3Ho- δὲdeSo ΠιλᾶτοςPilatosPilate ἠρώτησενērōtēsenasked αὐτὸνautonHim λέγωνlegōn- , ΣὺSyYou εἶei“ Are hothe ΒασιλεὺςBasileusKing τῶνtōnof the ἸουδαίωνIoudaiōnJews ? ” hothe δὲde- ἀποκριθεὶςapokritheis[Jesus] replied αὐτῷautō- ἔφηephē- . ΣὺSy“ You λέγειςlegeishave said [so] , ”
4Ho- δὲde- ΠιλᾶτοςPilatosPilate εἰπὲeipesay πρὸςprosto τοὺςtousthe ἀρχιερεῖςarchiereischief priests καὶkaiand τοὺςtousthe ὄχλουςochlouscrowds , ὅτιhoti- ΟὐδὲνOudenno εὑρίσκωheuriskō“ I find αἴτιονaitionbasis for a charge ἐνenagainst τῷ- ἀνθρώπῳanthrōpōman . ” τούτῳtoutōthis
5ΟἱHoi- δὲdeBut ἐπίσχυονepischyonthey kept insisting λέγοντεςlegontes. . . , ὅτιhoti- ἈνασείειAnaseiei“ He stirs up τὸνtonthe λαὸνlaonpeople διδάσκωνdidaskōn[with His] teaching . καθ’kath’over ὅληςholēsall τῆςtēs- ἸουδαίαςIoudaiasJudea ἀρξάμενοςarxamenosHe began ἀπὸapoin τῆςtēs- ΓαλιλαίαςGalilaiasGalilee ἕωςheōs[and has come] all the way ὧδεhōdehere . ”
6ΠιλᾶτοςPilatosPilate δὲdeWhen ἀκούσαςakousasheard [this] , ΓαλιλαίανGalilaianGalilee , ἐπηρώτησενepērōtēsenhe asked εἰeiif hothe ἄνθρωποςanthrōposman ΓαλιλαῖόςGalilaiosa Galilean . ἐστι·estiis
7καὶkaiAnd ἐπιγνοὺςepignouslearning ὅτιhotithat ἐκekunder τῆςtēs- ἐξουσίαςexousiasjurisdiction , ἩρῴδουHērōdouHerod’s ἐστὶνestin[Jesus] was ἀνέπεμψενanepempsenhe sent Him αὐτὸνauton. . . πρὸςprosto ἩρῴδηνHērōdēnHerod , ὄνταontawas καὶkai. . . αὐτὸνauton[who] himself ἐνenin ἹεροσολύμοιςHierosolymoisJerusalem ἐνenat ταύταιςtautaisthat ταῖςtais- ἡμέραιςhēmeraistime .
8Ho- δὲdeWhen ἩρῴδηςHērōdēsHerod ἰδὼνidōnsaw τὸνton- ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus , ἐχάρηecharēpleased . λίανliangreatly ἦνēnhe was γὰρgar- ἐξexfor ἱκανοῦikanoua large θέλωνthelōnHe had wanted ἰδεῖνideinto see αὐτὸνautonHim διὰdiabecause τὸto- ἀκούεινakoueinhe had heard αὐτὸνautonHim πολλὰpollamany περὶperiabout αὐτοῦautouHim καὶkaiand ἤλπιζέelpizewas hoping τιtia σημεῖονsēmeionmiracle . ἰδεῖνideinto see ὑπ’hyp’- αὐτοῦautouHim γινόμενονginomenonperform
9ἐπηρώταepērōta[Herod] questioned δὲde- αὐτὸνauton[Jesus] ἐνenat λόγοιςlogois[length] , ἱκανοῖςhikanoisgreat αὐτὸςautosHe δὲdebut οὐδὲνouden. . . . ἀπεκρίνατοapekrinatogave no answer αὐτῷautō. . .
10ΕἱστήκεισανHeistēkeisanstood there , δὲdeAnd οἱhoi- γραμματεῖςgrammateisscribes καὶkaiand οἱhoi- ἀρχιερεῖςarchiereischief priests ἐντόνωςentonosvehemently κατηγοροῦντεςkatēgorountesaccusing αὐτοῦautouHim .
11ἐξουθενήσαςexouthenēsasridiculed δὲdeAnd αὐτὸνauton. . . ho- ἩρῴδηςHērōdēsHerod σὺνsynand τοῖςtois- στρατεύμασινstrateumasinsoldiers αὐτοῦautouhis ‹καὶ›kaieven ἐμπαίξαςempaixasmocked [Him] . περιβαλὼνperibalōnDressing [Him] in αὐτὸνauton. . . ἐσθῆταesthētarobe , λαμπρὰνlamprana fine ἀνέπεμψενanepempsenthey sent Him back αὐτὸνauton. . . τῷto ΠιλάτῳPilatōPilate .
12ἘγένοντοEgenontobecame δὲde- φίλοιphiloifriends ho- τεte- ἩρῴδηςHērōdēsHerod καὶkaiand ho- ΠιλᾶτοςPilatosPilate ἐνenvvv αὐτῇautēThat τῇvvv ἡμέρᾳhēmeraday μετ’met’- ἀλλήλωνallēlōn- ; προϋπῆρχονproupērchonbefore this [time] γὰρgar- ἐνenvvv ἔχθρᾳechthraenemies ὄντεςontesthey had been πρὸςpros. . . ἑαυτούςheautousthemselves ,
13ΠιλᾶτοςPilatosPilate δὲdeThen συγκαλεσάμενοςsugkalesamenos[Jesus] called τοὺςtousthe ἀρχιερεῖςarchiereischief priests , καὶkai- τοὺςtousthe ἄρχονταςarchontasrulers , καὶkaiand τὸνtonthe λαὸνlaonpeople ,
14εἰπὲeipesay πρὸςprosto αὐτούςautousthem , ΠροσηνέγκατέProsēnenkate“ You brought μοιmoime τὸνton- ἄνθρωπονanthrōponman τοῦτονtoutonthis ὡςhōsas [one who] ἀποστρέφονταapostrephontawas inciting τὸνtonthe λαόνlaonpeople {to rebellion} . καὶkai- ἰδοὺidouhere ἐγὼegōI ἐνώπιονenōpionin your presence ὑμῶνhymōn. . . ἀνακρίναςanakrinashave examined [Him] οὐδὲνoudennothing εὗρονheuron[and] found ἐνen- τῷvvv ἀνθρώπῳanthrōpō[Him] τούτῳtoutōvvv αἴτιονaitionguilty ὧνhōnof κατηγορεῖτεkatēgoreiteyour charges κατ’kat’against αὐτοῦautouHim .
15ἀλλ’all’- οὐδὲoudeNeither [has] ἩρῴδηςHērōdēsHerod , ἀνέπεμψαanepempsahe sent Him γὰρgarfor ὑμᾶςhymasyou , πρὸςprosto αὐτὸνauton. . . καὶkai- ἰδοὺidouAs you can see , οὐδὲνoudennothing ἄξιονaxiondeserving θανάτουthanatouof death . ἐστὶestiis πεπραγμένονpepragmenondone αὐτῷautōHe
16παιδεύσαςpaideusasI will punish οὖνounTherefore αὐτὸνautonHim ἀπολύσωapolysō[and] release [Him] .”
17ἀνάγκηνanankēnneed δὲdeBut εἶχενeichenwho had ἀπολύεινapoluein[and] release [Him] .” αὐτοῖςautoisthem κατὰkataaccording to ἑορτὴνeortenFeast . ἕναhenaone
18ἀνέκραξανanekraxanthey all cried out δὲdeThen παμπληθεὶ*pamplētheiin unison λέγοντεςlegontes. . . : ΑἶρεAire“ Away with τοῦτονtoutonthis [man] ! ἀπόλυσονapolysonRelease δὲde- ἡμῖνhēminto us ! ” ΒαραββᾶνBarabbanBarabbas
19ὅστιςhostis([Barabbas] ἦνēn. . . διὰdiafor στάσινstasininsurrection τινὰtinaan γενομένηνgenomenēn- ἐνenin τῇthe πόλειpoleicity , καὶkaiand φόνονphononfor murder .) βεβλημένοςvevlimenossent εἰςeis. . . τὴνtēn- φυλακὴνphylakēn. . .
20ΠάλινPalinagain , οὖνounSo Ho- ΠιλᾶτοςPilatosPilate προσεφώνησε,prosephoneseHe called θέλωνthelōnWanting ἀπολῦσαιapolysaito release τὸνton- ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus ,
21οἱhoi- δὲdebut ἐπεφώνουνepephōnounthey kept shouting λέγοντεςlegontes. . . , Σταύρωσονstauroson“ Crucify [Him] ! σταύρωσονstauroson“ Crucify [Him] ! αὐτόνautonHim ! ”
22Ho- δὲde- τρίτονtritonA third [time] εἰπὲeipesay πρὸςprosto αὐτούςautousthem ΤίTi“ What γὰρgar- , κακὸνkakonevil ἐποίησενepoiēsendone ? οὗτοςhoutos{has} this [man] οὐδὲνoudenno ἄξιονaxiondeserving θανάτουthanatouof death . εὗρονheuron[and] found ἐνen- αὐτῷautōHe παιδεύσαςpaideusasI will punish οὖνounTherefore αὐτὸνautonHim ἀπολύσωapolysō[and] release [Him] .”
23οἱhoi- δὲdebut ἐπέκειντοepekeintothey were insistent , φωναῖςphōnaiswith loud voices μεγάλαιςmegalais. . . αἰτούμενοιaitoumenoidemanding αὐτὸνautonfor [Jesus] σταυρωθῆναιstaurōthēnaito be crucified . καὶkaiAnd κατίσχυονkatischyonprevailed . αἱhai- φωναὶphōnaiclamor αὐτῶνautōntheir καὶkaiAnd τὸνtonthe [one] ἀρχιερέωνarchiereōnchief priests , Ho-
24δὲde- ΠιλᾶτοςPilatosPilate ἐπέκρινεepekrinesentenced [that] γενέσθαιgenesthaibe met . τὸto- αἴτημαaitēmademand αὐτῶνautōntheir ἀπέλυσεapeluseHe sent him away δὲdeAs αὐτοῖςautoisthem
25τὸνton- ΒαραββᾶνBarabbanBarabbas τὸνton- διὰdiafor στάσινstasininsurrection καὶkaiand φόνονphononfor murder .) βεβλημένονbeblēmenonimprisoned εἰςeis. . . τὴνtēn- φυλακὴνphylakēn. . . ὃνhon- ᾐτοῦντοētountothey had requested , τὸνtonthe [one] δὲdeAs ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus παρέδωκεparedokehanded τῷover to θελήματιthelēmatiwill . αὐτῶνautōntheir
26ΚαὶKai- ὡςhōsAs ἀπήγαγονapēgagon[the soldiers] led Him away αὐτόνauton. . . , ἐπιλαβόμενοιepilabomenoithey seized ΣίμωνοςSimōnosto Simon τινοςtinosa Κυρηναίου,kurenaiouof Cyrene ἐρχομένουerkhomenouon his way in ἀπ’ap’from ἀγροῦagrouthe country , ἐπέθηκανepethēkan[and] put αὐτῷautōon him τὸνtonthe σταυρὸνstauroncross φέρεινphereinto carry ὀπίσωopisōafter τοῦtou- ἸησοῦIēsouJesus .
27ἨκολούθειĒkoloutheifollowed δὲde- αὐτῷautōon him πολὺpolyA great πλῆθοςplēthosnumber τοῦtou- λαοῦlaouof people καὶkaiincluding γυναικῶνgynaikōnwomen αἳhaiwho καὶkaiand ἐκόπτοντοekoptontokept mourning καὶkaiand ἐθρήνουνethrēnounwailing αὐτόνautonfor Him .
28στραφεὶςstrapheisturned δὲdeBut πρὸςprosto αὐτὰςautasthem ‹ὁ›ho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus εἰπὲeipesay ΘυγατέρεςThygateres“ Daughters ἸερουσαλήμIerousalēmof Jerusalem , μὴ{do} not κλαίετεklaieteweep ἐπ’ep’for ἐμέemeMe , πλὴνplēnbut ἐφ’eph’for ἑαυτὰςheautasyourselves κλαίετεklaieteweep καὶkaiand ἐπὶepifor τὰta- τέκναteknachildren . ὑμῶνhymōnyour
29ὅτιhoti- ἰδοὺidouLook , ἔρχονταιerchontaiare coming ἡμέραιhēmerai[the] days ἐνenvvv αἷςhaiswhen ἐροῦσι·erousi[people] will say , ΜακάριαιMakariai‘ Blessed [are] αἱhaithe στεῖραιsteiraibarren [women] , καὶkai- κοιλίαιkoiliaiwombs αἳhaithat οὐκouknever ἐγέννησανegennēsanbore , καὶkaiand μαστοὶmastoibreasts οἳhoithat οὐκouknever ἐθήλασαν.ethelasannursed ! ’
30τότεtoteAt that time ἌρξονταιArxontai‘ vvv λέγεινlegeinthey will say τοῖςtoisto the ὄρεσι,oresimountains , Πέσετε*Pesete“ Fall ἐφ’eph’on ἡμᾶςhēmasus ! ” ΚαὶKaiand τοῖςtoisto the βουνοῖςbounoishills , ΚαλύψατεKalypsate“ Cover ἡμᾶςhēmasus !”’
31ὍτιHotiFor εἰeiif ἐνen[while] ‹τῷ›the ὑγρῷhygrō[is] green , ξύλῳxylōtree ταῦταtautathese things ποιοῦσινpoiousin[men] do ἐνen[while] ‹τῷ›the ξηρῷxērōdry ? ” τίtiwhat γένηταιgenētaiwill happen
32ἬγοντοĒgontowere also led away δὲde- καὶkaivvv ἕτεροιheteroiothers , δύοdyoTwo κακοῦργοιkakourgoi[who were] criminals , σὺνsynwith αὐτῷautō[Jesus] . ἀναιρεθῆναιanairethēnaito be executed
33καὶkaivvv ὅτεhoteWhen ἀπελθὼνapelthōngo ἐπὶepito τὸνtonthe τόπονtoponplace τὸνton- καλούμενονkaloumenoncalled ΚρανίονKranionThe Skull , ἐκεῖekeithere , ἐσταύρωσανestaurōsanthey crucified αὐτὸνautonHim καὶkaialong with τοὺςtousthe κακούργουςkakourgouscriminals , ὃνhonone μὲνmen- ἐκekon δεξιῶνdexiōn[His] right ὃνhon[the other] δὲdeand ἐξexon ἀριστερῶνaristerōn[His] left .
34Ho- δὲdeThen ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ἔλεγε·elege[Jesus] declared ΠάτερPater“ Father , ἄφεςaphesforgive αὐτοῖςautoisthem , οὐouvvv γὰρgarfor οἴδασιoidasithey do not know τίtiwhat ποιοῦσι.poiousido διαμεριζόμενοιdiamerizomenoithey divided up δὲdeAnd τὰta- ἱμάτιαhimatiagarments αὐτοῦautouHis ἔβαλονebalonby casting κλῆρον.kleronlots .
35ΚαὶKai- εἱστήκειheistēkeistood hoThe λαὸςlaospeople θεωρῶνtheōrōnwatching , ἐξεμυκτήριζονexemyktērizonsneered at [Him] , δὲdeand καὶkai- οἱhoithe ἄρχοντεςarchontesrulers σὺνsynwith αὐτοῖςautoisthem , λέγοντεςlegontessaying , ἌλλουςAllousothers ; ἔσωσε,esose“ He saved σωσάτωsōsatōlet Him save ἑαυτόνheautonHimself εἰeiif οὗτόςhoutos[He] ἐστινestinis hothe ΧριστὸςChristosChrist hothe τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , hothe ἐκλεκτόςeklektosChosen [One] . ”
36ἐνέπαιζονenepaizonbegan to mock δὲde- αὐτῷautōHim καὶkaialso οἱhoiThe στρατιῶταιstratiōtaisoldiers προσερχόμενοιproserchomenoi[and] came up καὶkaialso ὄξοςoxossour wine . προσφέροντεςprospherontesto offer αὐτῷautōHim
37καὶkaialso λέγοντεςlegontesthey said , εἶeiare σὺsyYou εἶeiare hothe ΒασιλεὺςBasileusKing τῶνtōnof the ἸουδαίωνIoudaiōnJews , ” σῶσονsōson“ save σεαυτόνseautonYourself ! ”
38ἮνĒnwas [posted] δὲde- καὶkai- ἐπιγραφὴepigraphēan inscription : γεγραμμένηgegrammeniwritten ἐπ’ep’Above αὐτῷautōHim γράμμασινgrammasinwriting ἙλληνικοῖςellinikoisGreek καὶkai- ΡωμαϊκοῖςromaikoisLatin καὶkai- ἙβραϊκοῖςevraikoisHebrew ΟΥΤΟΣ*HOUTOSTHIS [IS] ἐστινestinis hothe ΒασιλεὺςBasileusKing τῶνtōnof the ἸουδαίωνIoudaiōnJews , ”
39ΕἷςHeisOne δὲde- τῶνtōnof the κρεμασθέντωνkremasthentōnwho hung [there] κακούργωνkakourgōncriminals ἐβλασφήμειeblasphēmeiheaped abuse on αὐτόνautonHim . ‹λέγων›legōnhe said . εἶeivvv σὺsy“ Are You εἶeivvv hothe ΧριστόςChristosChrist ? ” σῶσονsōson“ Save σεαυτὸνseautonYourself καὶkaiand ἡμᾶςhēmasus ! ”
40ἈποκριθεὶςApokritheisvvv δὲdeBut hothe ἕτεροςheterosother [one] ἐπετίμαepetimarebuked αὐτῷautōhim , ‹λέγων›legōnhe said . ΟὐδὲOudenot even φοβῇphobēfear σὺsy“ {Do} you τὸνton- ΘεόνTheonGod , ὅτιhotisince ἐνenunder τῷthe αὐτῷautōsame κρίματιkrimatijudgment ? εἶeiyou are
41καὶkai- ἡμεῖςhēmeisWe μὲνmen[ are punished ] δικαίωςdikaiōsjustly , ἄξιαaxiadeserve . γὰρgarfor ὧνhōnwhat ἐπράξαμενepraxamenour actions ἀπολαμβάνομενapolambanomenwe are receiving οὗτοςhoutos[this] man δὲdeBut οὐδὲνoudennothing ἄτοπονatoponwrong . ” ἔπραξε.epraxehas done καὶkaiThen
42ἔλεγεelege[Jesus] declared τῷthe ἸησοῦIēsou“ Jesus , μνήσθητίmnēsthētiremember μουmoume ΚύριεKyrie‘ Lord , ὅτανhotanwhen ἔλθῃςelthēsYou come ἐνenin τῇto βασιλείαbasileiakingdom σουsouYour
43ΚαὶKaiThen εἶπενeipen. . . , αὐτῷautōto him , ho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ἈμήνAmēn“ Truly λέγωlegōI tell σοιsoiyou , σήμερονsēmerontoday μετ’met’with ἐμοῦemouMe ἔσῃesēyou will be ἐνenin τῷ- ΠαραδείσῳParadeisōParadise . ”
44ἐνenin δὲdeand ὡσεὶhōseiabout ὥραhōrahour , ἕκτηhektē[the] sixth καὶkaiand σκότοςskotosdarkness ἐγένετοegenetocame ἐφ’eph’over ὅληνholēnall τὴνtēnthe γῆνgēnland ἕωςheōsuntil ὥραςhōrashour . ἐνάτηςenatēs[the] ninth
45τοῦtouThe ἡλίουhēliousun ἐκλειπόντος,ekleipontoswas darkened , ΚαὶKaiThen ἐσχίσθηeschisthēwas torn τὸtothe καταπέτασμαkatapetasmaveil τοῦtouof the ναοῦnaoutemple μέσονmesondown [the] middle .
46ΚαὶKaiThen φωνήσαςphōnēsascalled out φωνῇphōnēin a loud voice μεγάλῃmegalēvvv ho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus εἰπὲeipesay ΠάτερPater“ Father , εἰςeisinto χεῖράςcheirashands σουsouYour παρατίθεμαιparatithemaiI commit τὸto- πνεῦμάpneumaSpirit .” μουmouMy ΚαὶKaiThen ταῦταtautathese things . εἰπὼνeipōnHe had said ἐξέπνευσενexepneusenHe breathed His last .
47ἸδὼνIdōnsaw δὲdeWhen hothe ἑκατόνταρχοςekatontarkhosof a centurion τὸtowhat γενόμενονgenomenonhad happened , ἐδόξασεedoxasehe gave glory τὸνton- ΘεὸνTheonto God , λέγωνlegōnsaying , ὌντωςOntōs“ Surely ho- ἄνθρωποςanthrōposman . ” οὗτοςhoutosthis δίκαιοςdikaios[a] righteous ἦνēnwas
48καὶkaiAnd [when] πάντεςpantesall οἱhoithe συμπαραγενόμενοιsymparagenomenoiwho had gathered ὄχλοιochloipeople ἐπὶepifor τὴνtēn- θεωρίανtheōrianspectacle ταύτηνtautēnthis θεωροῦντεςtheōrountessees [it] τὰtawhat γενόμεναgenomenahad happened , τύπτοντεςtyptontesbeating ἑαυτόνheautonHimself τὰta- στήθηstēthēbreasts . ὑπέστρεφονhypestrephonthey returned [home]
49εἱστήκεισανheistēkeisanstood δὲdeBut πάντεςpantesall οἱhoithose who γνωστοὶgnōstoiknew αὐτοῦautouHis ἀπὸapo[He was] from μακρόθενmakrothenat a distance ΚαὶKaiNow γυναῖκεςgynaikes[the] women αἱhaiwho συνακολουθήσασαιsunakolouthesasaihad followed αὐτῷautōHim ἀπὸapofrom τῆςtēs- ΓαλιλαίαςGalilaiasGalilee , ὁρῶσαιhorōsaiwatching ταῦταtautathese things .
50ΚαὶKaiNow ἰδοὺidou[there was] ἀνὴρanērvvv ὀνόματιonomatinamed ἸωσὴφIōsēphJoseph , βουλευτὴςbouleutēsa Council member ὑπάρχωνhyparchōnvvv [καὶ]kaivvv ἀνὴρanērvvv ἀγαθὸςagathosa good καὶkaiand δίκαιοςdikaiosrighteous
51οὗτοςhoutos[who] οὐκoukvvv ἦνēnvvv συγκατατεθειμένοςsugkatatetheimenoshad not consented τῇto βουλῇboulēdecision καὶkai[or] τῇ- πράξειpraxeiaction . αὐτῶνautōntheir ἀπὸapo[He was] from ἉριμαθαίαςHarimathaias[of] Arimathea , πόλεωςpoleōs[the] Judean town τῶνtōn. . . ἸουδαίωνIoudaiōn. . . ὃςhos[and] προσεδέχετοprosedechetowas waiting for καὶkai[or] αὐτὸςautosHe τὴνtēn- βασιλείανbasileiankingdom ! ” τοῦtouThe ΘεοῦTheouof God .
52οὗτοςhoutosHe προσελθὼνproselthōnwent τῷ- ΠιλάτῳPilatōto Pilate ᾐτήσατοētēsatoto ask [for] τὸtothe σῶμαsōmabody τοῦtou- ἸησοῦIēsouof Jesus .
