1ἘγένοντοEgenontothere were δὲdeand καὶkaiand ψευδοπροφῆταιpseudoprophētaifalse prophets ἐνenamong τῷtōthe λαῷlaōpeople , ὡςhōsas καὶkaijust ἐνenamong ὑμῖνhyminyou . ἔσονταιesontaithere will be ψευδοδιδάσκαλοιpseudodidaskaloifalse teachers οἵτινεςhoitines[They] παρεισάξουσινpareisaxousinwill secretly introduce αἱρέσειςhaireseisheresies , ἀπωλείαςapōleiasdestructive καὶkaieven τὸνtonthe ἀγοράσανταagorasantawho bought αὐτοὺςautousthem — δεσπότηνdespotēnMaster ἀρνούμενοιarnoumenoidenying ἐπάγοντεςepagontesbringing ἑαυτοῖςheautoison themselves . ταχινὴνtachinēnswift ἀπώλειανapōleiandestruction
2καὶkai- πολλοὶpolloiMany ἐξακολουθήσουσινexakolouthēsousinwill follow in αὐτῶνautōntheir ταῖςtais- ἀσελγείαιςaselgeiaisdepravity , δι’di’[and] because of οὓςhous[them] ἡhēthe ὁδὸςhodosway τῆςtēsof ἀληθείαςalētheiastruth βλασφημηθήσεταιblasphēmēthēsetaiwill be defamed .
3καὶkai- ἐνenIn πλεονεξίᾳpleonexiatheir greed , πλαστοῖςplastoiswith deceptive λόγοιςlogoiswords . ὑμᾶςhymasyou ἐμπορεύσονταιemporeusontai[these false teachers] will exploit οἷςhoisagainst them τὸtoThe κρίμαkrimaverdict ἔκπαλαιekpalailongstanding οὐκoukvvv ἀργεῖargeiremains in force , καὶkaiand ἡhē- ἀπώλειαapōleiadestruction αὐτῶνautōntheir οὐou{does} not νυστάξει.nustaxeisleep .
4ΕἰEiif γὰρgarFor ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod ἀγγέλωνangelōn[the] angels ἁμαρτησάντωνhamartēsantōnwhen they sinned , οὐκouk{did} not ἐφείσατοepheisatospare ἀλλὰallabut σειραῖς*seiraisin chains ζόφουzophouof darkness ταρταρώσαςtartarōsascast [them] deep into hell , παρέδωκενparedōkenplacing [them] εἰςeisfor κρίσινkrisinjudgment ; τηρουμένουςtēroumenousto be held
5καὶkai[if] ἀρχαίουarchaiou[the] ancient κόσμουkosmouworld οὐκoukvvv ἐφείσατοepheisatoHe did not spare ἀλλὰallabut ὄγδοονogdoonamong the eight ; ΝῶεNōeNoah , δικαιοσύνηςdikaiosynēsof righteousness , κήρυκαkērykaa preacher ἐφύλαξε,ephulaxepreserved κατακλυσμὸνkataklysmon[the] flood κόσμῳkosmō[on its] ἀσεβῶνasebōnungodly [people] , ἐπάξαςepaxaswhen He brought
6καὶkai[if] πόλειςpoleis[the] cities ΣοδόμωνSodomōnof Sodom καὶkaiand ΓομόρραςGomorrasGomorrah τεφρώσαςtephrōsasreducing [them] to ashes καταστροφῇkatastrophēto destruction , κατέκρινενkatekrinenHe condemned ὑπόδειγμαhypodeigmaan example μελλόντωνmellontōnof what is coming on ἀσεβεῖνasebeinthe ungodly ; τεθεικώςtetheikōs[as]
7καὶkaiand δίκαιονdikaiona righteous [man] ΛὼτLōtLot , καταπονούμενονkataponoumenondistressed ὑπὸhypoby τῆςtēsthe τῶνtōnof the ἀθέσμωνathesmōnlawless ἐνenvvv ἀσελγείᾳaselgeiadepraved ἀναστροφῆςanastrophēsconduct ἐρρύσατοerrysato[if] He rescued
8βλέμματιblemmatihe saw γὰρgar(for καὶkaiand ἀκοῇakoēheard )— ὁhothat δίκαιοςdikaiosrighteous [man] , ἐγκατοικῶνegkatoikonliving ἐνenamong αὐτοῖςautoisthem ἡμέρανhēmeranday ἐξexafter ἡμέραςhēmerasday , ψυχὴνpsychēnsoul δικαίανdikaian[in his] righteous ἀνόμοιςanomois[by the] lawless ἔργοιςergoisdeeds ἐβασάνισεν·ebasanisenwas tormented
9οἶδεoideknows ΚύριοςKyrios[ if all this is so, then the ] Lord εὐσεβεῖςeusebeis[the] godly ἐκekfrom πειρασμοῦpeirasmoutrials ῥύεσθαιrhyesthaito rescue ἀδίκουςadikous[the] unrighteous δὲdeand εἰςeison ἡμέρανhēmeran[the] day κρίσεωςkriseōsof judgment . κολαζομένουςkolazomenousfor punishment τηρεῖνtēreinto hold
10μάλισταmalistaspecially [reserved] δὲde[ Such punishment is ] τοὺςtousfor those who ὀπίσωopisōof σαρκὸςsarkos[the] flesh ἐνen. . . ἐπιθυμίᾳepithymiadesires μιασμοῦmiasmou[the] corrupt πορευομένουςporeuomenousindulge καὶkaiand κυριότητοςkyriotētosauthority . καταφρονοῦνταςkataphronountasdespise τολμηταὶtolmētaiBold αὐθάδειςauthadeis[and] self-willed , δόξαςdoxasglorious beings . οὐou. . . τρέμουσιtremousithey are unafraid βλασφημοῦντεςblasphēmountesto slander
11ὅπουhopouYet not even ἄγγελοιangeloiangels , ἰσχύϊischuiin strength καὶkaiand δυνάμειdynameipower , μείζονεςmeizonesgreater ὄντεςontes[though] οὐou. . . φέρουσιpherousidare to bring κατ’kat’against αὐτῶνautōnthem παρὰparabefore ΚυρίῳKyriō[the] Lord . βλάσφημονblasphēmonsuch slanderous κρίσινkrisincharges
12ΟὗτοιHoutoiThese [men] δέde- ὡςhōs[are] like ἄλογαalogairrational ζῷαzōaanimals , φυσικὰphysikacreatures of instinct , γεγεννημέναgegennēmenaborn εἰςeis- ἅλωσινhalōsinto be captured καὶkaiand φθοράνphthorandestroyed . ἐνenin οἷςhois[matters] ἀγνοοῦσιagnoousiare ignorant βλασφημοῦντεςblasphēmountesThey blaspheme ἐνenin τῇtē. . . φθορᾷphthora. . . , αὐτῶνautōn. . . καταφθαρήσονταιkataftarisontairuin
13κομιούμενοιkomioumenoiThe harm they will suffer μισθὸνmisthon[is the] wages ἀδικίαςadikiasof [their] wickedness . ἡδονὴνhēdonēna pleasure ἡγούμενοιhēgoumenoiThey consider it τὴνtēn- ἐνenin ἡμέρᾳhēmerabroad daylight . τρυφήνtryphēnto carouse σπίλοιspiloi[They are] blots καὶkaiand μῶμοιmōmoiblemishes , ἐντρυφῶντεςentryphōntesreveling ἐνenin ταῖςtais- ἀπάταιςapataisdeception αὐτῶνautōntheir συνευωχούμενοιsyneuōchoumenoias they feast with ὑμῖνhyminyou .
14ὀφθαλμοὺςophthalmous[Their] eyes ἔχοντεςechontesare μεστοὺςmestousfull μοιχαλίδοςmoichalidosof adultery ; καὶkai- ἀκαταπαύστουςakatapaustoustheir desire for sin is never satisfied ἁμαρτίαςhamartias. . . ; δελεάζοντεςdeleazontesthey seduce ψυχὰςpsychas. . . . ἀστηρίκτουςastēriktous[the] unstable καρδίανkardianhearts γεγυμνασμένηνgegymnasmenēntrained πλεονεξίαςpleonexiasin greed . ἔχοντεςechonteswith κατάραςkataras[They are] accursed τέκναteknachildren
15ΚαταλιπόντεςKatalipontesThey have left εὐθεῖανeutheian[the] straight ὁδὸνhodonway ἐπλανήθησανeplanēthēsanand wandered off ἐξακολουθήσαντεςexakolouthēsantesto follow τῇtēthe ὁδῷhodōway τοῦtou- ΒαλαὰμBalaamof Balaam τοῦtou- Βοσόρ,bosor[son] of Beor , ὃςhoswho μισθὸνmisthon[the] wages ἀδικίαςadikiasof wickedness . ἠγάπησενēgapēsenloved
16ἔλεγξινelenxinrebuked δὲdeBut ἔσχενeschenhe was ἰδίαςidiasfor his παρανομίαςparanomiastransgression ὑποζύγιονhypozygionby a donkey , ἄφωνονaphōnon[ otherwise ] without speech , ἐνenwith ἀνθρώπουanthrōpoua man’s φωνῇphōnēvoice φθεγξάμενονphthenxamenonthat spoke ἐκώλυσεekoluse[and] restrained τὴνtēn- τοῦtouthe προφήτουprophētouprophet’s παραφρονίανparaphronianmadness .
17ΟὗτοίHoutoiThese [men] εἰσιeisiare πηγαὶpēgaisprings ἄνυδροιanydroiwithout water νεφέλαιnefelaicloud ὑπὸhypoby λαίλαποςlailaposa storm . ἐλαυνόμεναιelaunomenaidriven οἷςhoisfor them ὁho- . ζόφοςzophosBlackest τοῦtou- σκότουςskotousdarkness εἰςeis- αἰῶναaiōnaforever .” τετήρηταιtetērētaiis reserved
18ὑπέρογκαhyperonkaWith lofty γὰρgar- ματαιότητοςmataiotētos[but] empty φθεγγόμενοιphthengomenoiwords, they appeal δελεάζουσινdeleazousin[and] entice ἐνen- ἐπιθυμίαιςepithymiaispassions σαρκὸςsarkosof [the] flesh ἀσελγείαιςaselgeiais[to the] sensual τοὺςtousthose ὌντωςOntōs“ Surely ἀποφυγόνταςapophugontasescaping τοὺςtousthose ἐνen- πλάνῃplanēerror . ἀναστρεφομένουςanastrephomenouslive
19ἐλευθερίανeleutherianfreedom , αὐτοῖςautoisthem ἐπαγγελλόμενοιepangellomenoiThey promise αὐτοὶautoiwhile they themselves δοῦλοιdouloislaves ὑπάρχοντεςhyparchontesare τῆςtēs- φθορᾶςphthorasto depravity . ᾧhōto whatever γὰρgarindeed τιςtisvvv ἥττηταιhēttētaihas mastered him . τούτῳtoutōvvv ‹καὶ›kaivvv δεδούλωταιdedoulōtaia man is a slave
20ΕἰEiIf γὰρgarindeed ἀποφυγόντεςapophygontesthey have escaped τὰtathe μιάσματαmiasmatacorruption τοῦtouof the κόσμουkosmouworld ἐνenthrough ἐπιγνώσειepignōsei[the] knowledge τοῦtouof [our] ΚυρίουKyriouLord καὶkaiand ΣωτῆροςSōtērosSavior ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist , τούτοιςtoutoisby it δὲdeonly πάλινpalinagain , ἐμπλακέντεςemplakentesto be entangled ἡττῶνταιhēttōntai[and] overcome γέγονενgegonenis αὐτοῖςautoistheir τὰta- ἔσχαταeschatafinal [condition] χείροναcheironaworse than τῶνtōn[it was] πρώτωνprōtōnat first .
21κρεῖττονkreittonbetter γὰρgar- ἦνēnIt would have been αὐτοῖςautoisfor them μὴmēnot ἐπεγνωκέναιepegnōkenaito have known τὴνtēnthe ὁδὸνhodonway τῆςtēs- δικαιοσύνηςdikaiosynēsof righteousness ἢēthan ἐπιγνοῦσινepignousinto have known [it] ὑποστρέψαιhypostrepsaiand then to turn away ἐκekfrom τῆςtēsthe παραδοθείσηςparadotheisēspassed on αὐτοῖςautoisto them . ἁγίαςhagiasholy ἐντολῆςentolēscommandment
22συμβέβηκεsumbebekeare δὲdeonly αὐτοῖςautoistheir τὸtothe τῆςtēs- ἀληθοῦςalēthoustrue : παροιμίαςparoimiasproverbs ΚύωνKyōn“ A dog ἐπιστρέψαςepistrepsasreturns ἐπὶepito τὸto- ἴδιονidion[its] ἐξέραμαexeramavomit ,” καίkaiand , ὟςHys“ A sow λουσαμένηlousamenēthat is washed εἰςeis[goes back] to [her] κύλισμαkulismawallowing βορβόρουborborouin [the] mud . ”
