2οἵhoiThe δὲde- βάρβαροιbarbaroiislanders παρεῖχον*pareichonshowed οὐouvvv τὴνtēnvvv τυχοῦσανtychousanextraordinary φιλανθρωπίανphilanthrōpiankindness . ἡμῖνhēminus ἀνάψαντεςanapsantesThey kindled γὰρgar- πυρὰνpyrana fire προσελάβοντοproselabonto[and] welcomed πάνταςpantasall ἡμᾶςhēmasof us διὰdiabecause [it was] τὸνton- ὑετὸνhyetonraining τὸνton- ἐφεστῶταephestōta- καὶkaiand διὰdia- τὸto- ψῦχοςpsychoscold .
3ΣυστρέψαντοςSystrepsantosgathered δὲde- τοῦtou- ΠαύλουPaulouPaul φρυγάνωνphryganōnof sticks , πλῆθοςplēthosbundle καὶkaiand ἐπιθέντοςepithentosas he laid [them] ἐπὶepion τὴνtēnthe πυράνpyranfire , ἔχιδναechidnaa viper , ἀπὸapoout τῆςtēsby the θέρμηςthermēsheat , διεξελθοῦσαdiexelthousashe went out καθῆψεkathepsefastened [itself] τῆςtēsby the χειρὸςcheiroshand . αὐτοῦautouhis
4ὡςhōsWhen δὲde- εἶδονeidonsaw οἱhoithe βάρβαροιbarbaroiislanders κρεμάμενονkremamenonhanging τὸtothe θηρίονthērioncreature ἐκekfrom τῆςtēs- χειρὸςcheiroshand , αὐτοῦautouhis ἔλεγονelegonthey said πρὸςprosto ἀλλήλουςallēlousone another , ΠάντωςPantōs“ Surely φονεύςphoneusa murderer . ἐστινestinis ὁho- ἄνθρωποςanthrōposman οὗτοςhoutosthis ὃνhon[Although he] διασωθένταdiasōthentawas saved ἐκekfrom τῆςtēsthe θαλάσσηςthalassēssea , ἡhē- ΔίκηDikēJustice ζῆνzēnto live . ” οὐκouk{has} not εἴασενeiasenallowed [him]
5ὁho- μὲνmenBut οὖνoun- ἀποτινάξαςapotinaxas[Paul] shook τὸtothe θηρίονthērioncreature εἰςeis{off} into τὸtothe πῦρpyrfire ἔπαθενepathen[and] suffered οὐδὲνoudenno κακόνkakonill effects .
6οἱhoi- δὲde- προσεδόκωνprosedokōn[The islanders] were expecting αὐτὸνautonhim μέλλεινmelleinto πίμπρασθαιpimprasthaiswell up ἢēor καταπίπτεινkatapipteindrop ἄφνωaphnōsuddenly νεκρόνnekrondead . ἐπὶepitime πολὺpolya long δὲdeBut αὐτῶνautōn- προσδοκώντωνprosdokōntōnafter waiting καὶkaiand θεωρούντωνtheōrountōnseeing μηδὲνmēdennothing ἄτοπονatoponunusual εἰςeisto αὐτὸνautonhim , γινόμενονginomenonhappen μεταβαλλόμενοιmetaballomenoithey changed their minds ἔλεγονelegon[and] said θεόνtheona god . αὐτὸνautonhe εἶναιeinaiwas
7ἘνEnNearby δὲde- τοῖςtois. . . περὶperi. . . τὸνton. . . τόπονtopon. . . ἐκεῖνονekeinon. . . ὑπῆρχεuperkhe- χωρίαchōriaan estate τῷtōbelonging to πρώτῳprōtō[the] chief official τῆςtēsof the νήσουnēsouisland . ὀνόματιonomativvv ΠοπλίῳPopliōPublius , ὃςhos[He] ἀναδεξάμενοςanadexamenoswelcomed ἡμᾶςhēmasus τρεῖςtreis[for] three ἡμέραςhēmerasdays . φιλοφρόνωςphilophronōshospitably ἐξένισενexenisen[and] entertained [us]
8ἐγένετοegenetowas δὲde- τὸνtonThe πατέραpaterafather τοῦtou- ΠοπλίουPopliouof Publius πυρετοῖςpyretoisfever καὶkaiand δυσεντερίῳdysenteriōdysentery . συνεχόμενονsynechomenonsuffering from κατακεῖσθαιkatakeisthaisick in bed , πρὸςprosto [see] ὃνhon[him] , ὁho- ΠαῦλοςPaulosPaul εἰσελθὼνeiselthōnwent in καὶkaiand προσευξάμενοςproseuxamenosafter praying καὶkaiand ἐπιθεὶςepitheis[and] placing τὰςtas[his] χεῖραςcheirashands αὐτῷautōon him , ἰάσατοiasatohe healed αὐτόνauton[the man] .
9τούτουtoutouthis οὖνoun- γενομένουgenomenouhad happened , καὶkaiand οἳhoi[The islanders] λοιποὶloipoirest οἱhoiof the ἔχοντεςechontesvvv ἀσθενείαςastheneiassick ἐνenon τῇtēthe νήσῳnēsōisland προσήρχοντοprosērchontocame καὶkaiand ἐθεραπεύοντοetherapeuontowere cured
10οἳhoi[The islanders] καὶkai- πολλαῖςpollaisin many τιμαῖςtimaisways ἐτίμησανetimēsanhonored ἡμᾶςhēmasus καὶkai- ἀναγομένοιςanagomenois[when we were ready] to sail . ἐπέθεντοepethentosupplied τὰta- πρὸςpros- τὴνtēn- χρείανchreianneeded
11μετὰmetaAfter δὲde- τρεῖςtreisthree μῆναςmēnasmonths ἀνήχθημενanēchthēmenwe set sail ἐνenin πλοίῳploiōship παρακεχειμακότιparakecheimakotithat had wintered ἐνenin τῇtēthe νήσῳnēsōisland . ἈλεξανδρινῷAlexandrinōan Alexandrian παρασήμῳparasēmōas a figurehead . ΔιοσκούροιςDioskouroisIt had the Twin Brothers
12καὶkai- καταχθέντεςkatachthentesPutting in εἰςeisat ΣυρακούσαςSyrakousasSyracuse , ἐπεμείναμενepemeinamenwe stayed there ἡμέραςhēmerasdays . τρεῖςtreisthree
13ὅθενhothenFrom [there] περιελθόντεςperielthontesCutting away κατηντήσαμενkatēntēsamenand came εἰςeisto ῬήγιονRhēgionRhegium . καὶkai- μετὰmetaAfter μίανmianone ἡμέρανhēmeranday , ἐπιγενομένουepigenomenoucame up , νότουnotoua south wind δευτεραῖοιdeuteraioi[and] on the second day ἤλθομενēlthomenwe arrived εἰςeisat ΠοτιόλουςPotiolousPuteoli .
14οὗhou[There] εὑρόντεςheuronteswe found ἀδελφοὺςadelphous[some] brothers παρεκλήθημενpareklēthēmenwho invited us ἐπ’ep’. . . αὐτοῖςautoisthem . ἐπιμεῖναιepimeinaito spend ἡμέραςhēmeras. . . ἑπτάhepta[the week[ καὶkaiAnd οὕτωςhoutōsso εἰςeisto τὴνtēn- ῬώμηνRhōmēnRome . ἤλθομενēlthomenwe arrived
15ΚἀκεῖθενKakeithenthere οἱhoiThe ἀδελφοὶadelphoibrothers ἀκούσαντεςakousanteshad heard τὰta- περὶperiabout ἡμῶνhēmōnus ἐξελθὼνexelthōnhe came out εἰςeisto ἀπάντησινapantēsinmeet ἡμῖνhēminus . ἄχριςakhrisuntil ἈππίουAppiouof Appius ΦόρουPhorou[the] Forum καὶkaiand ΤριῶνTriōn[the] Three ΤαβερνῶνTabernōnTaverns οὓςhous[them] , ἰδὼνidōnsaw ὁho[When} ΠαῦλοςPaulosPaul εὐχαριστήσαςeucharistēsasand gave thanks τῷtō- ΘεῷTheōto God . ἔλαβεelabevvv θάρσοςtharsoshe was encouraged
16ὍτεHoteWhen δὲde- ἤλθομενēlthomenwe arrived εἰςeisat ῬώμηνRhōmēnRome . ὁho[When} ἑκατοντάρχηςhekatontarchēscenturion παρέδωκεparedokehanded τοὺςtousthe δεσμίουςdesmiousprisoners τῷtō- στρατοπεδάρχῃ·stratopedarkhea soldier τῷtō- δὲde- ΠαύλῳPaulōPaul ἐπετράπηepetrapēwas permitted μένεινmeneinto stay καθ’kath’by ἑαυτὸνheautonhimself , σὺνsynwith τῷtō- φυλάσσοντιphylassontito guard αὐτὸνautonhim . στρατιώτῃstratiōtēa soldier
17ἘγένετοEgeneto- δὲde- μετὰmetaAfter ἡμέραςhēmerasdays , τρεῖςtreisthree συγκαλέσασθαιsugkalesasthaicalled together τῶνtōnof the ΠαῦλονPaulonPaul τοὺςtousthe ὄνταςontas- τῶνtōnof the ἸουδαίωνIoudaiōnJews . πρώτουςprōtousleaders συνελθόντωνsynelthontōnhad gathered , δὲde[When] αὐτῶνautōnthey ἔλεγεelege[Jesus] declared πρὸςprosto αὐτούςautousthem , ἄνδρεςandresvvv ἀδελφοίadelphoi“ Brothers , ἘγώEgōI οὐδὲνoudennothing ἐναντίονenantionagainst ποιήσαςpoiēsas[although] I have done τῷtō[our] λαῷlaōpeople ἢēor τοῖςtoisthe ἔθεσιethesicustoms τοῖςtois- πατρῴοιςpatrōoisof our fathers , δέσμιοςdesmioswas taken prisoner ἐξexin ἹεροσολύμωνHierosolymōnJerusalem παρεδόθηνparedothēn[and] handed over εἰςeisto τὰςtas- χεῖραςcheiras- τῶνtōnthe ῬωμαίωνRhōmaiōnRomans .
18οἵτινεςhoitines[They] ἀνακρίναντέςanakrinantesexamined μεmeme ἐβούλοντοeboulonto[and] wanted ἀπολῦσαιapolysaito release [me] , διὰdiabecause τὸto- μηδεμίανmēdemianno αἰτίανaitianbasis θανάτουthanatoufor a death sentence ὑπάρχεινhyparcheinthere was ἐνenagainst ἐμοίemoime .
19ἀντιλεγόντωνantilegontōnobjected , δὲdeBut τῶνtōn[when] the ἸουδαίωνIoudaiōnJews ἠναγκάσθηνēnankasthēnI was compelled ἐπικαλέσασθαιepikalesasthaito appeal to ΚαίσαραKaisaraCaesar , οὐχouchno ὡςhōs[even though] τοῦtou- ἔθνουςethnousnation . μουmoumy ἔχωνechōnI have τιti[charge] κατηγορῆσαι.kategoresaito accuse
20διὰdiafor ταύτηνtautēnthis οὖνounSo τὴνtēn- αἰτίανaitianreason παρεκάλεσαparekalesaI have called ὑμᾶςhymasyou ἰδεῖνideinto see καὶkaiand προσλαλῆσαιproslalēsaispeak with [you] . ἕνεκεν*henekenbecause of γὰρgar[It is] τῆςtēsthe ἐλπίδοςelpidoshope τοῦtou- ἸσραὴλIsraēlof Israel τὴνtēn- ἅλυσινhalysinchain . ” ταύτηνtautēnthis περίκειμαιperikeimai[that] I am bound with
21ΟἱHoi- δὲde- πρὸςpros- αὐτὸνauton- , εἰπόνeiponsay , ἩμεῖςHēmeis“ We οὔτεoute. . . γράμματαgrammata[any] letters περὶperiabout σοῦsouyou ἐδεξάμεθαedexamethahave not received ἀπὸapofrom τῆςtēs- ἸουδαίαςIoudaiasJudea , οὔτεoutenor παραγενόμενόςparagenomenos[from there] τιςtis{have} any τῶνtōnof the ἀδελφῶνadelphōnbrothers ἀπήγγειλενapēngeilenreported ἢēor even ἐλάλησέelaleseHe promised τιtianything περὶperiabout σοῦsouyou . πονηρόνponēronbad
22ἀξιοῦμενaxioumenwe consider δὲdeBut παρὰparavvv σοῦsouvvv ἀκοῦσαιakousai{worth} hearing , ἃhavvv φρονεῖςphroneisyour views περὶperiabout μὲνmen- γὰρgarbecause τῆςtēs- αἱρέσεωςhaireseōssect . ” ταύτηςtautēsthis γνωστὸνgnōstonknow ἐστινestin- ἡμῖνhēminwe ὅτιhotithat πανταχοῦpantachou[people] everywhere ἀντιλέγεταιantilegetaiare speaking against
23ΤαξάμενοιTaxamenoithey set δὲdeSo αὐτῷautōto [meet with Paul] , ἡμέρανhēmerana day ἧκονekonthey came πρὸςprosto αὐτὸνauton- εἰςeis- τὴνtēn[the place] ξενίανxenianhe was staying . πλείονεςpleiones[and] many [people] οἷςhoisto [them] ἐξετίθετοexetithetoHe expounded διαμαρτυρόμενοςdiamartyromenostestifying about τὴνtēnthe βασιλείανbasileiankingdom τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God πείθωνpeithōnpersuading τεteand αὐτοὺςautousthem τὰta- περὶperiabout τοῦtouthe ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ἀπόapofrom τεte- τοῦtouthe νόμουnomouLaw ΜωϋσέωςMōuseōsof Moses καὶkaiand τῶνtōnthe προφητῶνprophētōnProphets . ἀπόapofrom πρωῒprōimorning ἕωςheōsto ἑσπέραςhesperasevening ,
24καὶkaiand οἱhoiSome [of them] μὲνmen- ἐπείθοντοepeithontowere convinced τοῖςtoisby what λεγομένοιςlegomenoishe said , οἱhoi[others] δὲdebut ἠπίστουνēpistounrefused to believe .
25ἀσύμφωνοιasymphōnoiThey disagreed δὲde- ὄντεςontesvvv πρὸςprosamong ἀλλήλουςallēlous[themselves] ἀπελύοντοapelyonto[and] began to leave εἰπόντοςeipontoshad made τοῦtou- ΠαύλουPaulou[after] Paul ῥῆμαrhēmastatement ἓνhen[this final] ὅτιhoti- : ΚαλῶςKalōswas right τὸto- ΠνεῦμαPneumaSpirit τὸto- ἍγιονHagionHoly ἐλάλησεelaleseHe promised διὰdiathrough ἨσαΐουĒsaiouIsaiah τοῦtouthe προφήτουprophētouprophet : πρὸςprosto τοὺςtous- πατέραςpaterasfathers ὑμῶνhymōnyour
26λέγωνlegōn- ΠορεύθητιPoreuthēti‘ Go πρὸςprosto τὸνton- λαὸνlaonpeople τοῦτονtoutonthis καὶkaiand εἰπόνeiponsay , ἈκοῇAkoē“ You will be ever hearing ἀκούσετεakousete. . . καὶkai[but] οὐounever μὴmē. . . συνῆτεsynēteunderstanding ; καὶkai- βλέποντεςblepontesyou will be ever seeing βλέψετεblepsete. . . καὶkai[but] οὐounever μὴmē. . . ἴδητεidēteperceiving . ”
27ἐπαχύνθηepachynthēhas grown callous ; γὰρgarFor ἡhē- καρδίαkardiaheart τοῦtou- λαοῦlaoupeople’s τούτουtoutouthis καὶkai[but] τοῖςtoiswith [their] ὠσὶosihearing . ” βαρέωςbareōs. . . ἤκουσανēkousanthey hardly hear καὶkai- τοὺςtous- ὀφθαλμοὺςophthalmouseyes . αὐτῶνautōntheir ἐκάμμυσανekammysanthey have closed μήποτέmepotethat at not time, lest ever ἴδωσιidosithey see τοῖςtoiswith [their] ὀφθαλμοῖςophthalmoiseyes , καὶkai- τοῖςtoiswith [their] ὠσὶνōsinears , ἀκούσωσιakousosihear καὶkai- τῇtēwith [their] καρδίᾳkardiahearts , συνῶσιsunosiunderstand καὶkaiand ἐπιστρέψωσι,epistrepsosithey might turn καὶkaiand ἰάσομαιiasomaiI would heal αὐτούςautousthem .’
28ΓνωστὸνGnōstonadvised , οὖνountherefore , ἔστωestōBe ὑμῖνhymin- ὅτιhotithat τοῖςtoisto the ἔθνεσινethnesinGentiles , ἀπεστάληapestalēhas been sent τοῦτοtouto- τὸto- σωτήριονsōtērionsalvation τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod’s αὐτοὶautoithey καὶkaiand ἀκούσονταιakousontaiwill listen !”
29καὶkaiand ταῦταtauta. . . αὐτοῦautouhis εἰπόντοςeipontoshad made ἀπελθὼνapelthōngo οἱhoi[others] ἸουδαῖοιIoudaioiJews πολλὴνpollēn. . . ἔχοντεςechontesvvv ἐνenon ἑαυτοῖςheautoisthemselves , συζήτησιν.suzetesindeliberated ,
30Ἔμεινεemeinestayed δὲde[After] ὁho- ΠαῦλοςPaulosPaul διετίανdietiantwo full years ὅληνholēn. . . ἐνenin ἰδίῳidiōhis own μισθώματιmisthōmatirented house , καὶkai- ἀπεδέχετοapedechetowelcoming πάνταςpantasall τοὺςtouswho εἰσπορευομένουςeisporeuomenouscame πρὸςprosto [visit] αὐτόνautonhim .
31κηρύσσωνkēryssōnhe proclaimed τὴνtēnthe βασιλείανbasileiankingdom τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God καὶkaiand διδάσκωνdidaskōntaught τὰta- περὶperiabout τοῦtouthe ΚυρίουKyriouLord ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist . μετὰmetavvv πάσηςpasēsvvv παρρησίαςparrēsiasBoldly ἀκωλύτωςakōlytōs[and] freely
