3καὶkaiand εἰπὲeipesay πρὸςpros- αὐτούςautousthem , ΜηδὲνMēdennothing αἴρετεairete“ Take εἰςeisfor τὴνtēnthe ὁδόνhodonjourney , ” μήτεmēte“ no ῥάβδουςrabdousstaff , μήτεmēte“ no πήρανpēranbag , μήτεmēteno ἄρτονartonbread , μήτεmēteno ἀργύριονargyrionmoney , μήτεmēteno ἀνὰana- δύοdyosecond χιτῶναςchitōnastunic ἔχεινechein- .

6ἘξερχόμενοιExerchomenoithey set out δὲdeSo διήρχοντοdiērchontoand went κατὰkatafrom τὰςtas- κώμαςkōmasvillage to village , εὐαγγελιζόμενοιeuangelizomenoipreaching the gospel καὶkaiand θεραπεύοντεςtherapeuonteshealing [people] πανταχοῦpantachoueverywhere .
7Ἤκουσεekouseheard δὲdeWhen ἩρῴδηςHērōdēsHerod hothe τετράρχηςtetrarkhestetrarch τὰtathat γενόμεναgenomenahad happened , ὑπ’hyp’under αὐτοῦautouHis πάνταpantaall καὶkaiand διηπόρειdiēporeihe was perplexed . διὰdiaFor τὸto- λέγεσθαιlegesthaiwere saying ὑπόhypo- τινωνtinōnsome ὅτιhotithat ἸωάννηςIōannēsJohn ἠγήγερταιegegertaihad risen ἐκekfrom τῶνtōnof νεκρῶνnekrōn[the] dead ,
8ὑπόhypo- τινωνtinōnothers δὲde- ὅτιhotithat ἨλίαςĒliasElijah ἐφάνηephanēhad appeared , ἄλλωνallōnothers δὲdeand still ὅτιhotithat προφήτηςprophētēsprophet τιςtisa τῶνtōnof ἀρχαίωνarchaiōnold ἀνέστηanestēhad arisen . καὶkaiAnd
9ΕἶπενEipensaid , ἩρῴδηςHērōdēsHerod ἸωάννηνIōannēnJohn , ” ἐγὼegō“ I ἀπεκεφάλισαapekephalisabeheaded τιςtisa δὲdeand still ἐστινestinis οὗτοςhoutosthis [man] περὶperiabout οὗhou- ? ” ἐγὼegō“ I ἀκούωakouōI hear τοιαῦταtoiautasuch things καὶkaiAnd ἐζήτειezēteihe kept trying ἰδεῖνideinto see αὐτόνauton[Jesus] .
10ΚαὶKaiThen ὑποστρέψαντεςhypostrepsantesreturned οἱhoithe ἀπόστολοιapostoloiapostles διηγήσαντοdiēgēsanto[and] reported αὐτῷautōto [Jesus] ὅσαhosaall that ἐποίησανepoiēsanthey had done . ΚαὶKai- παραλαβὼνparalabōnTaking αὐτοὺςautousthem {away} ὑπεχώρησεupekhoreseHe withdrew κατ’kat’vvv ἰδίανidianprivately , εἰςeisto τόπονtoponplace ἔρημονerēmonwilderness πόλεωςpoleōstown , καλουμένηςkaloumenescalled ΒηθσαϊδάBēthsaidaBethsaida .
11οἱhoithe δὲdeBut ὄχλοιochloicrowds γνόντεςgnontesfound out ἠκολούθησανēkolouthēsan[and] followed αὐτῷautōHim . καὶkai- δεξάμενοςdexamenostaking αὐτοὺςautousthem ἐλάλειelalei[and] spoke αὐτοῖςautoisto them περὶperiabout τῆςtēsthe βασιλείαςbasileiaskingdom τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , καὶkaiand τοὺςtousthose who χρείανchreianneeded ἔχονταςechontasvvv θεραπείαςtherapeiashealing . ἰάσατοiasatohealed
12ēor δὲdeyet ἡμέρᾳhēmeraday ἤρξατοērxatovvv κλίνεινklineinneared its end , προσελθόντεςproselthontescame δὲde- οἱhoithe δώδεκαdōdekaTwelve εἰπὼνeipōnHe said αὐτῷautōHim , ἈπόλυσονApolyson“ Dismiss τὸνtonthe ὄχλονochloncrowd ἵναhinaso πορευθέντεςporeuthentesthey can go εἰςeisto τὰςtasthe κύκλῳkyklōsurrounding κώμαςkōmasvillages καὶkaiand τοὺςtousthose who ἀγροὺςagrouscountryside καταλύσωσιkatalusosifor lodging καὶkaiand εὕρωσιeurosiLooking for a reason ἐπισιτισμόνepisitismonprovisions . ὅτιhotiFor ὧδεhōdehere . ” ἐνenin ἐρήμῳerēmōa desolate τόπῳtopōplace ἐσμένesmenwe are
13εἰπὲeipesay δὲdeBut πρὸςpros- αὐτούςautousthem , ΔότεDotegive αὐτοῖςautoisthem ὑμεῖςhymeis“ You φαγεῖνphageinsomething to eat . ” ΟἱHoi- δὲde- εἰπὼνeipōnHe said ΟὐκOukvvv εἰσὶνeisin“ vvv ἡμῖνhēminWe have only πλεῖονpleionvvv ēvvv πέντεpentefive ἄρτοιartoiloaves of bread καὶkaiand ἰχθύεςichthyesfish , ” δύοdyotwo εἰei“ unless μήτιmēti. . . πορευθέντεςporeuthentesgo ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe ἀγοράσωμενagorasōmen[and] buy εἰςeisfor πάνταpantaall τὸνton- λαὸνlaonpeople . ” τοῦτονtoutonthese βρώματαbrōmatafood
14ἦσανēsanThere were γὰρgar( - ὡσεὶhōseiabout ἄνδρεςandresmen .) πεντακισχίλιοιpentakischilioifive thousand εἰπὲeipesay δὲde- πρὸςpros. . . τοὺςtous- μαθητὰςmathētasdisciples , αὐτοῦautouHis ΚατακλίνατεKataklinate“ Have them sit down αὐτοὺςautous. . . κλισίαςklisiasgroups ἀνὰanain πεντήκονταpentēkontafifty {each} . ”
15καὶkai- ἐποίησανepoiēsanThey did οὕτωouto[this] καὶkai- ἀνέκλινανaneklinanlaid ἅπανταςhapantaseveryone
16ΛαβὼνLabōnTaking δὲde- τοὺςtousthe πέντεpentefive ἄρτουςartousloaves καὶkaiand τοὺςtousthe δύοdyotwo ἰχθύαςichthyasfish ἀναβλέψαςanablepsas[and] looking up εἰςeisto τὸνton- οὐρανὸνouranonheaven , εὐλόγησενeulogēsen[Jesus] spoke a blessing αὐτοὺςautousthem . καὶkaiThen κατέκλασε,kateklasebroke καὶkaiThen ἐδίδουedidouHe gave [them] τοῖςtoisto the μαθηταῖςmathētaisdisciples παραθεῖναιparatheinaito set before τῷthe ὄχλῳochlōpeople .
17ΚαὶKai- ἔφαγονephagonThey all ate καὶkaiand ἐχορτάσθησανechortasthēsanwere satisfied , πάντεςpantesvvv ΚαὶKai- ἤρθηērthēpicked up τὸto- περισσεῦσανperisseusanthat were left over . αὐτοῖςautois[the disciples] κλασμάτωνklasmatōnof broken pieces κόφινοιkophinoibasketfuls δώδεκαdōdekatwelve
18ΚαὶKai- ἐγένετοegeneto[One day] ἐνenas τῷ- εἶναιeinaiwas αὐτὸνauton[Jesus] προσευχόμενονproseuchomenonpraying κατὰkatain μόναςmonasprivate συνῆσανsynēsanwere with αὐτῷautōHim , οἱhoi[and] the μαθηταίmathētaidisciples καὶkai- ἐπηρώτησενepērōtēsenHe questioned αὐτοὺςautousthem λέγωνlegōn- : ΤίναTina“ Who μεmeI λέγουσινlegousinsay ΟἱHoi- ὄχλοιochloicrowds εἶναιeinaiwas
19οἱhoi[and] the δὲde- ἀποκριθέντεςapokrithentesThey replied εἰπὼνeipōnHe said ἸωάννηνIōannēn“ [Some say] John τὸνtonthe ΒαπτιστήνBaptistēnBaptist ; ἄλλοιalloiothers [say] δὲde- ἨλίανĒlianElijah ; ἄλλοιalloiothers [say] δὲde- ὅτιhotithat προφήτηςprophētēsa prophet τιςtis- τῶνtōnof ἀρχαίωνarchaiōnold ἀνέστηanestēhas arisen . ”
20εἰπὲeipesay δὲde“ But [what about] αὐτοῖςautois- . ὙμεῖςHymeisyou ? ” δὲde- τίναtina“ Who μεmeI λέγετεlegetedo you say εἶναιeinaiam ? ” ἀποκριθεὶςapokritheisanswered δὲde- ΠέτροςPetrosPeter εἰπὲeipesay ΤὸνTon“ The ΧριστὸνChristonChrist τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God . ”
21Ho- δὲde- ἐπιτιμήσαςepitimēsas[Jesus] strictly warned αὐτοῖςautoisthem παρήγγειλεpareggeile[Jesus] ordered μηδενὶmēdenito [anyone] . λέγεινlegein{not} to tell τοῦτοtoutothis
22εἰπὼνeipōnHe said ὅτιhoti- . ΔεῖDeimust τὸνton“ The ΥἱὸνHuionSon τοῦtou- ἀνθρώπουanthrōpouof Man πολλὰpollamany things , ” παθεῖνpatheinsuffer καὶkai- ἀποδοκιμασθῆναιapodokimasthēnai“ He must be rejected ἀπὸapoby τῶνtōnthe πρεσβυτέρωνpresbyterōnelders , καὶkai- ἀρχιερέωνarchiereōnchief priests , καὶkaiand γραμματέωνgrammateōnscribes , καὶkaiand ἀποκτανθῆναιapoktanthēnaiHe must be killed καὶkaiand τῇon the τρίτῃtritēthird ἡμέρᾳhēmeraday ἐγερθῆναιegerthēnaibe raised to life . ”
23Ἔλεγεelege[Jesus] declared δὲdeThen πρὸςprosto πάνταςpantasall of them , ΕἴEi“ If τιςtisanyone θέλειtheleiwants ὀπίσωopisōafter μουmouMe , ἔρχεσθαιerchesthaito come ἀπαρνησάσθωaparnesasthohe must deny ἑαυτὸνheautonhimself καὶkaiand ἀράτωaratōtake up τὸνton- σταυρὸνstauroncross αὐτοῦautouhis καθ’kath’vvv ἡμέρανhēmerandaily καὶkaiand ἀκολουθείτωakoloutheitōfollow μοιmoiMe .
24ὃςhoswhoever γὰρgarFor ἂν*an. . . θέλῃthelēwants τὴνtēn- ψυχὴνpsychēnlife αὐτοῦautouhis σῶσαιsōsaito save ἀπολέσειapoleseiwill lose αὐτήνautēnit , ὃςhoswhoever δ’d’but ἂνan. . . ἀπολέσῃapolesēloses τὴνtēn- ψυχὴνpsychēnlife αὐτοῦautouhis ἕνεκενhenekenfor My sake ἐμοῦemou. . . οὗτοςhoutos- σώσειsōseiwill save αὐτήνautēnit .
25ΤίTiWhat γὰρgar- ὠφελεῖταιōpheleitaidoes it profit ἄνθρωποςanthrōposa man κερδήσαςkerdēsasto gain τὸνtonthe κόσμονkosmonworld , ὅλονholonwhole ἑαυτὸνheautonhis very self ? δὲdeyet ἀπολέσαςapolesaslose ēor ζημιωθείςzēmiōtheisforfeit
26ὃςhosIf anyone γὰρgar- ἐὰνean. . . ἐπαισχυνθῇepaischynthēis ashamed of μεmeMe καὶkaiand τοὺςtous- ἐμοὺςemousMy λόγουςlogouswords , τοῦτονtoutonhim hothe ΥἱὸςHuiosSon τοῦtou- ἀνθρώπουanthrōpouof Man ἐπαισχυνθήσεταιepaischynthēsetaiwill be ashamed of ὅτανhotanwhen ἔλθῃelthēHe comes ἐνenin τῇ- δόξῃdoxēglory αὐτοῦautouHis καὶkaiand τοῦtou[in the glory] of the ΠατρὸςPatrosFather καὶkaiand τῶνtōnof the ἁγίωνhagiōnholy ἀγγέλωνangelōnangels .
27λέγωlegōI tell δὲdeBut ὑμῖνhyminyou ἀληθῶςalēthōstruthfully , εἰσίeisiare τινεςtinessome τῶνtōnwho ὧδεhōdehere . ἑστηκότωνhestēkotōnstanding οἳhoi- οὐouvvv μὴvvv γεύσωνταιgeusōntaiwill not taste θανάτουthanatoudeath ἕωςheōsbefore ἂνan. . . ἴδωσιidosithey see τὴνtēnthe βασιλείανbasileiankingdom τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God . ”
28ἘγένετοEgeneto- δὲde- μετὰmetaafter τοὺςtous- λόγουςlogous[Jesus] had said τούτουςtoutousthese things , ὡσεὶhōseiAbout ἡμέραιhēmeraidays ὀκτὼoktōeight καὶkai- παραλαβὼνparalabōnHe took with [Him] τῶνtōnwho ΠέτρονPetronPeter , καὶkai- ἸωάννηνIōannēnJohn , καὶkaiand ἸάκωβονIakōbonJames , ἀνέβηanebē[and] went up εἰςeison τὸto- ὄροςorosa mountain προσεύξασθαιproseuxasthaito pray .
29καὶkaiAnd ἐγένετοegenetoas ἐνen. . . τῷ- προσεύχεσθαιproseuchesthaiwas praying , αὐτὸνautonHe τῷ- εἶδοςeidosappearance τοῦtouof προσώπουprosōpouface αὐτοῦautouHis ἕτερονheteronchanged , καὶkaiand ho- ἱματισμὸςhimatismosclothes αὐτοῦautouHis λευκὸςleukoswhite . ἐξαστράπτωνexastraptōnbecame radiantly
30καὶkai- ἰδοὺidouSuddenly ἄνδρεςandresmen , δύοdyotwo συνελάλουνsynelalounbegan talking with αὐτῷautō[Jesus] . οἵτινεςhoitines- ἦσανēsan- ΜωϋσῆςMōusēsMoses καὶkaiand ἨλίαςĒliasElijah ,
31οἳhoi[They] ὀφθέντεςophthentesappeared ἐνenin δόξῃdoxēglory ἔλεγονelegon[and] spoke about τὴνtēn- ἔξοδονexodondeparture , αὐτοῦautouHis ἣνhēnwhich ἔμελλεemelleHe was about πληροῦνplērounto accomplish ἐνenat ἸερουσαλήμIerousalēmJerusalem .
32Ho- δὲdeMeanwhile ΠέτροςPetrosPeter καὶkaiand οἱhoihis companions σὺνsyn. . . αὐτῷautō. . . ἦσανēsanwere βεβαρημένοιbebarēmenoiovercome ὕπνῳhypnōby sleep , διαγρηγορήσαντεςdiagrēgorēsanteswhen they awoke , δὲdebut εἶδον*eidonthey saw τὴνtēn- δόξανdoxanglory αὐτοῦautou[Jesus’] καὶkaiand τοὺςtousthe δύοdyotwo ἄνδραςandrasmen τοὺςtous- συνεστῶταςsynestōtasstanding with αὐτῷautōHim .
33καὶkaiAs ἐγένετοegeneto. . . ἐνen. . . τῷ- διαχωρίζεσθαιdiachōrizesthaiwere leaving αὐτοὺςautous[Moses and Elijah] ἀπ’ap’. . . αὐτοῦautou. . . , εἶπενeipensaid ho- ΠέτροςPetrosPeter πρὸςprosto τὸνton- ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus , ἘπιστάταEpistata“ Master , καλόνkalongood ἐστινestinit is ἡμᾶςhēmasfor us ὧδεhōdehere . εἶναιeinaito be καὶkai- ποιήσωμενpoiēsōmenLet us put up σκηνὰςskēnasshelters — τρεῖςtreisthree μίανmianone σοὶsoifor You , καὶkai- μίανmianone ΜωϋσεῖMōuseifor Moses , καὶkaiand μίανmianone ἨλίᾳĒliafor Elijah . ” μὴ( vvv εἰδὼςeidōsHe did not know howhat λέγειlegeihe was saying .)
34ΤαῦταTauta. . . , δὲdeWhile αὐτοῦautou[Peter] λέγοντοςlegontoswas speaking ἐγένετοegenetoappeared νεφέληnephelēa cloud καὶkaiand ἐπεσκίασενepeskiasenenveloped αὐτούςautousthem , ἐφοβήθησανephobēthēsanthey were afraid δὲdeand ἐνenas τῷ- εἰσελθεῖνeiseltheinentered ἐκείνουςekeinous[the pigs] , εἰςeis. . . τὴνtēnthe νεφέληνnephelēncloud .
35καὶkaiAnd φωνὴphōnēa voice ἐγένετοegenetocame ἐκekfrom τῆςtēsthe νεφέληςnephelēscloud , λέγουσαlegousasaying , ΟὗτόςHoutos“ This ἐστινestinis ho- ΥἱόςHuiosSon , μουmouMy ho- ἀγαπητόςagapētosbeloved αὐτοῦautouto Him ! ” ἀκούετεakoueteListen
36καὶkaiAfter ἐνen. . . τῷ- γενέσθαιgenesthaihad spoken , τὴνtēnthe φωνὴνphōnēnvoice εὑρέθηheurethēwas present [with them] . ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus μόνοςmonosonly καὶkai- αὐτοὶautoi[The disciples] ἐσίγησανesigēsankept this to themselves , καὶkaiand οὐδενὶoudeni. . . ἀπήγγειλανapēngeilanthey did not tell anyone ἐνenin ἐκείναιςekeinaisthose ταῖςtais- ἡμέραιςhēmeraisdays οὐδὲνouden. . . ὧνhōnwhat ἑωράκασιν.eorakasinthey had seen . 38καὶkaiSuddenly ἰδοὺidou. . . ἀνὴρanēra man ἀπὸapoin τοῦtouthe ὄχλουochloucrowd ἀνεβόησεaneboesecried out λέγωνlegōn. . . , ΔιδάσκαλεDidaskale“ Teacher , δέομαίdeomaiI beg σουsouYou ἐπιβλέψονepiblepsonto look ἐπὶepiat τὸνton- υἱόνhuionson , μουmoumy ὅτιhotifor μονογενήςmonogenēsonly child . μοίmoimy ἐστι·estiis
39καὶkai- ἰδοὺidou- πνεῦμαpneumaA spirit λαμβάνειlambaneikeeps seizing αὐτόνautonhim , καὶkaiand ἐξαίφνηςexaiphnēsabruptly . κράζειkrazeihe screams καὶkaiand σπαράσσειsparasseiIt throws him into convulsions αὐτὸνauton. . . μετὰmeta[so that] ἀφροῦaphrouhe foams at the mouth . καὶkai- μόγις*mogis[and] rarely ἀποχωρεῖapochōreideparts ἀπ’ap’from αὐτοῦautouhim . συντρῖβονsyntribonIt keeps mauling αὐτόνautonhim
40καὶkai- ἐδεήθηνedeēthēnI begged τῶνtōn- μαθητῶνmathētōndisciples σουsouYour ἵναhinato ἐκβάλωσινekbalōsindrive it out αὐτόauto. . . , καὶkaibut οὐκoukvvv ἠδυνήθησανēdynēthēsanthey were unable . ”
41ἈποκριθεὶςApokritheisreplied δὲde- ho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus εἶπενeipen. . . . ho- γενεὰgeneageneration ! ” ἄπιστοςapistosunbelieving καὶkaiand διεστραμμένηdiestrammenēperverse ἕωςheōs“ How long πότεpote. . . ἔσομαιesomaimust I remain πρὸςproswith ὑμᾶςhymasyou καὶkaiand ἀνέξομαιanexomaiput up with ὑμῶνhymōnyou ? προσάγαγεprosagageBring τὸνton- υἱόνhuionson σουsouyour ὧδεhōdehere . ”

46εἰσέλθῃeiselthēwill never enter δὲdeThen διαλογισμὸςdialogismosan argument ἐνenamong αὐτοῖςautois[the disciples] τὸto[as to] τίςtiswhich ἂνan. . . εἴηeiēwould be μείζωνmeizōn[the] greatest . αὐτῶνautōnof them

60εἰπὲeipesay δὲdeBut αὐτῷautōhim , ho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ἌφεςAphes“ Let τοὺςtousthe νεκροὺςnekrousdead θάψαιthapsaibury τοὺςtous- ἑαυτῶνheautōntheir own νεκρούςnekrousdead . σὺsyYou , δὲdehowever , ἀπελθὼνapelthōngo διάγγελλεdiangelle[and] proclaim τὴνtēnthe βασιλείανbasileiankingdom τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God . ”
