3εἰδὼςeidōs[Jesus] knew hothe ἸησοῦςIēsous[and] Jesus ὅτιhotithat πάνταpantaall things δέδωκενdedōkenhas assigned αὐτῷautō- hothe ΠατὴρPatērFather εἰςeisinto τὰςtas[His] χεῖραςcheirashands , καὶkaiand ὅτιhotithat ἀπὸapofrom ΘεοῦTheouGod ἜξελθεExelthe‘ Go out καὶkaiand πρὸςprosto τὸνton- ΘεὸνTheonGod . ὑπάγειhypageiwas returning
4ἐγείρεταιegeiretai[So] He got up ἐκekfrom τοῦtouthe δείπνουdeipnousupper , καὶkai- τίθησιtithesiputs [it] τὰta[His] ἱμάτιαhimatiaouter garments , καὶkaiand λαβὼνlabōn- λέντιονlentiona towel διέζωσενdiezōsenwrapped ἑαυτόνheauton{around} His {waist} .
5εἶταeitaAfter that , βάλλειballeiHe poured ὕδωρhydōrwater εἰςeisinto τὸνton- νιπτῆραniptēraa basin καὶkaiand ἤρξατοērxatobegan νίπτεινnipteinto wash τοὺςtousthe πόδαςpodasfeet τῶνtōnvvv μαθητῶνmathētōndisciples’ καὶkaiand ἐκμάσσεινekmasseindry [them] τῷwith the λεντίῳlentiōtowel that ἦνēnwas διεζωσμένοςdiezōsmenosaround Him .
6ἜρχεταιErchetaiHe came οὖνoun- πρὸςprosto ΣίμωναSimōnaSimon ΠέτρονPetronPeter , καὶkai. . . λέγειlegeiwho asked αὐτῷautōHim , ἐκεῖνοςekeinos- ΚύριεKyrie“ Lord , σὺsy“ You μουmoumy νίπτειςnipteisare You going to wash τοὺςtous- πόδαςpodasfeet ? ”

10ΛέγειLegeitold αὐτῷautōhim , Ho“ Whoever ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ‹ὁ›ho- λελουμένοςleloumenoshas already bathed ΟὐOu“ Never χρείανchreianneeds ἔχειechei- the τοὺςtous- πόδαςpodasfeet . νίψασθαιnipsasthaito wash ἀλλ’all’[and] ἔστιestiis καθαρὸςkatharosclean . ὅλοςholoshe will be completely καὶkaiAnd ὑμεῖςhymeisyou καθαροίkatharoiclean , ἐστεesteare ἀλλ’all’though οὐχὶouchinot πάντεςpantesall [of you] . ”
11ᾔδειēdeiHe knew γὰρgarFor τὸνtonwho παραδιδόνταparadidontawould betray αὐτόνautonHim . διὰdiaThat is why τοῦτοtouto. . . εἶπενeipenHe said , ΟὐχὶOuchi“ Not πάντεςpantesall καθαροίkatharoiare clean . ” ἐστεesteof you
12ὍτεHoteWhen [Jesus] οὖνoun- ἔνιψεenipsehad washed τοὺςtous- πόδαςpodasfeet αὐτῶνautōntheir καὶkaiand ἔλαβεelabeswept over τὰta- ἱμάτιαhimatiaouter garments , αὐτοῦautouHis ἀναπεσὼνanapesōnLeaning πάλινpalinagain εἶπενeipen[and] asked αὐτοῖςautois. . . , ΓινώσκετεGinōskete“ Do you know τίtiwhat πεποίηκαpepoiēkaI have done ὑμῖνhyminfor you ?

14εἰeiif οὖνounSo ἐγὼegōI , ἔνιψαenipsahave washed ὑμῶνhymōnyour τοὺςtous- πόδαςpodasfeet , ho- ΚύριοςKyriosLord καὶkaiand ho- ΔιδάσκαλοςDidaskalosTeacher , καὶkaiand ὑμεῖςhymeisyou ὀφείλετεopheileteshould ἀλλήλωνallēlōnone another’s νίπτεινnipteinwash τοὺςtous- πόδαςpodasfeet .
15ὑπόδειγμαhypodeigmaan example γὰρgar- δέδωκαdedōkaI have given ὑμῖνhyminyou ἵναhinaso that καθὼςkathōsas ἐγὼegōI ἐποίησαepoiēsahave done ὑμῖνhyminfor you . καὶkai- ὑμεῖςhymeisyou ποιῆτεpoiēteshould do
16ἀμὴνamēnTruly , ἀμὴνamēnTruly , λέγωlegōI tell ὑμῖνhyminyou , οὐκoukno ἔστιestiis δοῦλοςdoulosservant μείζωνmeizōngreater than τοῦtou- κυρίουkyrioumaster , αὐτοῦautouhis οὐδὲoudenor [is] ἀπόστολοςapostolosa messenger μείζωνmeizōngreater than τοῦtouthe [one who] πέμψαντοςpempsantossent αὐτόνautonhim .
17εἰeiIf ταῦταtautathese things , οἴδατεoidateyou know μακάριοίmakarioiblessed ἐστεesteyou will be ἐὰνeanif ποιῆτεpoiēteyou do αὐτάautathem .
18ΟὐOu- περὶperiabout πάντωνpantōnall ὑμῶνhymōnof you ; λέγωlegōI am not speaking ἐγὼegōI οἶδαoidaknow οὓςhouswhat ἐξελεξάμηνexelexamēnI have chosen . ἀλλ’all’But ἵναhinathis is to the γραφὴgraphēScripture : πληρωθῇplērōthēfulfill Ho‘ The one who τρώγωνtrōgōnshares μετ’met’with ἐμοῦemouMe . ” τὸνton- ἄρτονartonbread ἐπῆρενepērenhas lifted up ἐπ’ep’against ἐμὲemeMe .’ τὴνtēn- πτέρνανpternanheel αὐτοῦautouhis
19ἀπ’ap’- ἄρτιartinow λέγωlegōI am telling ὑμῖνhyminyou πρὸprobefore τοῦtou- γενέσθαιgenesthaiit happens , ἵναhinaso that ὅτανhotanwhen γένηταιgenētaiit comes to pass , πιστεύσητε*pisteusēteyou will believe ὅτιhotithat ἐγώegōI εἰμιeimiam [He] .
20ἀμὴνamēnTruly , ἀμὴνamēnTruly , λέγωlegōI tell ὑμῖνhyminyou , howhoever λαμβάνωνlambanōnreceives ἐὰνeanif τιναtinathe one πέμψωpempsōI send ἐμὲemeMe , λαμβάνειlambaneireceives howhoever δὲdeand ἐμὲemeMe , λαμβάνωνlambanōnreceives λαμβάνειlambaneireceives τὸνtonthe [One who] πέμψαντάpempsantasent μεmeMe . ”
21ΤαῦταTauta[this] , εἰπὼνeipōnhad said ‹ὁ›ho- ἸησοῦςIēsous[After] Jesus ἐταράχθηetarachthēHe became troubled τῷ- πνεύματιpneumatiin spirit καὶkaiand ἐμαρτύρησεemarturesehad testified καὶkaiand εἶπενeipen. . . , ἈμὴνAmēn“ Truly , ἈμὴνAmēn“ Truly , λέγωlegōI tell ὑμῖνhyminyou , ὅτιhoti- εἷςheisone ἐξexof ὑμῶνhymōnyou παραδώσειparadōseiwill betray μεmeMe . ”
22ἜβλεπονEbleponlooked οὖνounSo εἷςheisOne ἀλλήλουςallēlousone another , οἱhoiThe μαθηταὶmathētaidisciples ἀπορούμενοιaporoumenoiperplexed περὶperias to τίνοςtinoswhich of them λέγειlegeiHe meant .
23ἦνēnwas δὲdeand ἀνακείμενοςanakeimenosreclining εἷςheisOne ἐκekof τῶνtōn- μαθητῶνmathētōndisciples , αὐτοῦautouHis ἦνēnwas τῷ- κόλπῳkolpōside . τοῦtou- ἸησοῦIēsou[His] ὃνhonthe one whom ἠγάπαēgapaloved , ho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus
24νεύειneueimotioned οὖνounSo τούτῳtoutōto him ΣίμωνSimōnSimon ΠέτροςPetrosPeter ‹πυθέσθαιpythesthaito ask [Jesus] τίςtiswhich one ἂνan- εἴη›eiē- περὶperiabout . οὗhou- λέγειlegeiHe was talking
25ἀναπεσὼνanapesōnLeaning δὲdeBut ἘκεῖνόςEkeinosthe [one] ἐπὶepi. . . τὸto. . . στῆθοςstēthos. . . τοῦtou. . . ἸησοῦIēsouJesus , λέγειlegeihe asked αὐτῷautō- , ΚύριεKyrie“ Lord , τίςtiswho ἐστινestinis it ? ”
26ἈποκρίνεταιApokrinetaianswered , ho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ἘκεῖνόςEkeinosthe [one] ἐστινestin“ It is to whom ἐγὼegōI βάψαςbapsasdipped τὸtothe ψωμίονpsōmionmorsel ἐπιδώσω.epidoso[God] gives καὶkaiand ἐμβάψαςembapsaswho has dipped οὖνounThen τὸtothe ψωμίονpsōmionmorsel δίδωσινdidōsingave [it] ἸούδᾳIoudato Judas ΣίμωνοςSimōnos[son] of Simon Ἰσκαριώτῃ.iskarioteIscariot ,
27καὶkai[And when Judas had taken] μετὰmeta. . . τὸtothe ψωμίονpsōmionmorsel , τότεtote- εἰσῆλθενeisēlthenentered εἰςeisinto ἐκεῖνονekeinonhim . ‹ὁ›ho- ΣατανᾶςSatanasSatan ΛέγειLegeisaid οὖνounThen αὐτῷautōto [Judas] , Ho“ What ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ‹ὁ›ho- ποιεῖςpoieisyou are about to do , ποίησονpoiēsondo τάχιονtachionquickly . ”
28τοῦτοtoutothis δὲdeBut οὐδεὶςoudeisno one ἔγνωegnōknew τῶνtōn- ἀνακειμένωνanakeimenōn[at the table] πρὸςproswhy τίti. . . εἶπενeipen[Jesus] had said αὐτῷautōto him .
29τινὲςtinessome γὰρgar- ἐδόκουνedokounthought ἐπεὶepeiSince τὸtothe γλωσσόκομονglōssokomonmoney bag , εἶχενeichenkept ‹ὁ›ho- ἸούδαςIoudasJudas ὅτιhotithat λέγειlegeiwas telling αὐτῷautōhim ‹ὁ›ho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ἈγόρασονAgorasonto buy ὧνhōnwhat χρείανchreianneeded ἔχομενechomenwas εἰςeisfor τὴνtēnthe ἑορτήνheortēnfeast , ēor τοῖςtoisto the πτωχοῖςptōchoispoor . ἵναhinato τιtisomething δῷgive
30λαβὼνlabōnAs soon as he had received οὖνoun- τὸtothe ψωμίονpsōmionmorsel , ἐκεῖνοςekeinos[Judas] εὐθέωςeutheōsat once . ἐξῆλθενexēlthenwent out ἦνēn[into the] δὲde- νύξnyxnight .
31ὍτεHoteWhen οὖνoun- ἜξελθεExelthe‘ Go out λέγειlegeisaid , hothe ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ΝῦνNyn“ Now ἐδοξάσθηedoxasthēis glorified , ho- ΥἱὸςHuiosSon τοῦtou- ἀνθρώπουanthrōpouof Man καὶkaiand ho- ΘεὸςTheosGod ἐδοξάσθηedoxasthēis glorified ἐνenin αὐτῷautōHim .
32εἰeiIf ho- ΘεὸςTheosGod ἐδοξάσθηedoxasthēis glorified ἐνenin αὐτῷautōHim , καὶkaivvv ho- ΘεὸςTheosGod δοξάσειdoxaseiwill also glorify αὐτὸνauton[the Son] ἐνenin ἑαυτῷheautōHim . καὶkaiand εὐθὺςeuthysat once . δοξάσειdoxaseiwill glorify αὐτόνautonHim
33ΤεκνίαTekniaLittle children , ἔτιetionly μικρὸνmikrona little while longer . μεθ’meth’with ὑμῶνhymōnyou εἰμιeimiI am ζητήσετέzētēseteYou will look for μεmeMe , καὶkaiand καθὼςkathōsas εἶπονeiponI said τοῖςtoisto the ἸουδαίοιςIoudaioisJews , ὅτιhoti- : ὍπουHopou‘ Where ὑπάγωhypagōam going , ἐγὼegōI ὑμεῖςhymeisyou οὐouvvv δύνασθεdynasthecannot ἐλθεῖνeltheincome . ’ καὶkaiso ὑμῖνhyminto you λέγωlegōI say ἄρτιartinow
34ἘντολὴνEntolēncommandment καινὴνkainēnA new δίδωμιdidōmiI give ὑμῖνhyminyou : ἵναhina- ἀγαπᾶτεagapateLove ἀλλήλουςallēlousone another . καθὼςkathōsAs ἠγάπησαēgapēsaI have loved ὑμᾶςhymasyou , ἵναhinaso καὶkaialso ὑμεῖςhymeisyou ἀγαπᾶτεagapatemust love ἀλλήλουςallēlousone another .
35ἐνenBy τούτῳtoutōthis γνώσονταιgnōsontaiwill know πάντεςpanteseveryone ὅτιhotithat ἐμοὶemoiMy μαθηταίmathētaidisciples , ἐστεesteyou are ἐὰνeanif ἀγάπηνagapēnyou love ἔχητεechētevvv ἐνen- ἀλλήλοιςallēloisone another . ”
36ΛέγειLegeiasked αὐτῷautō- . ΣίμωνSimōnSimon ΠέτροςPetrosPeter ΚύριεKyrie“ Lord , ποῦpouwhere ὑπάγειςhypageisare You going ? ” ἈπεκρίθηApekrithēanswered [αὐτῷ]autō- , ‹ὁ›ho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ὍπουHopou“ Where ἐγὼegōI ὑπάγωhypagōam going , οὐouvvv δύνασαίdynasaiyou cannot μοιmoiMe νῦνnynnow , ἀκολουθῆσαιakolouthēsaifollow ὕστερονhysteronlater . ” δὲdebut ἀκολουθήσειςakolouthēseisyou will follow μοιmoiMe
37ΛέγειLegeisaid αὐτῷautō- , ‹ὁ›ho- ΠέτροςPetrosPeter ΚύριεKyrie“ Lord , ” διατίdiatiwhy οὐouvvv δύναμαίdynamaican’t I σοιsoiYou ἀκολουθῆσαιakolouthēsaifollow ἄρτιartinow ? τὴνtēn- ψυχήνpsychēnlife μουmoumy ὑπὲρhyperfor σοῦsouYou . ” θήσωthēsōI will lay down
