2διὰdiabecause δὲdeBut τὰςtas[there is so much] πορνείαςporneiassexual immorality , ἕκαστοςhekastoseach man τὴνtēn[own] ἑαυτοῦheautouhis γυναῖκαgynaikawife , ἐχέτωechetō- καὶkaiand ἑκάστηhekastēeach woman τὸνton[her] ἴδιονidionown ἄνδραandrahusband . ἐχέτωechetō-
3ΤῇTēto [his] γυναικὶgynaikiwife , ὁhoThe ἀνὴρanērhusband τὴνtēn[his] ὀφειλομένηνopheilomenenowed [him] εὔνοιανevnoianfavor ἀποδιδότωapodidotōshould fulfill ὁμοίωςhomoiōslikewise δὲdeand καὶkai. . . ἡhēthe γυνὴgynēwife τῷtōto [her] ἀνδρίandrihusband .
4ἡhēThe γυνὴgynēwife τοῦtou[her] ἰδίουidiouown σώματοςsōmatosbody , οὐκouk[does] not ἐξουσιάζειexousiazeihave authority over ἀλλ’all’but ὁhohe who ἄνερanerhusband , ὁμοίωςhomoiōsConversely , δὲdeNow καὶkai- ὁhohe who ἄνερanerhusband , τοῦtou- ἰδίουidiou[his] σώματοςsōmatosbody , οὐκouk[does] not ἐξουσιάζειexousiazeihave authority over ἀλλ’all’but ᾗhē[he was] in γυνὴgynēwife
5μὴmēvvv ἀποστερεῖτεapostereitedeprive ἀλλήλουςallēlouseach other , εἰeiexcept ΜὴMē{Do} not τίtiHow ἂνan. . . ἐκekby συμφώνουsymphōnoumutual consent πρὸςpros[and] for καιρὸνkairona time , ἵναhinaso σχολάζητεskholazeteyou may devote yourselves τῇtē- νηστείᾳnesteiaFast . καὶkaiThen τῇtē- προσευχῇproseuchēto prayer . καὶkaiThen πάλινpalinagain , ἐπὶepitogether τὸto- αὐτὸauto- συνέρχησθεsynerchēstheyou come together , ἵναhinaso that μὴmēvvv πειράζῃpeirazēwill not tempt ὑμᾶςhymasyou ὁho- ΣατανᾶςSatanasSatan διὰdiathrough τὴνtēn- ἀκρασίανakrasianlack of self-control . ὑμῶνhymōnyour
6τοῦτοtoutothis δὲde- λέγωlegōI say κατὰkataas συγγνώμην,suggnomena concession , οὐounot κατ’kat’as ἐπιταγήνepitagēna command .
7θέλωthelōI wish that γάρgarFor πάνταςpantasall ἀνθρώπουςanthrōpousmen εἶναιeinaiwere ὡςhōsas καὶkai- ἐμαυτόνemautonI am . ἀλλ’all’but ἝκαστοςHekastosEach [one] ἴδιονidionhis own χάρισμαcharismagift ἔχειecheihas ἐκekfrom ΘεοῦTheouGod ; ὡςhōsas μὲνmen- οὕτωςhoutōsthis [gift] , ὡςhōsas δὲde- οὕτωςhoutōsthis [gift] ,
8ΛέγωLegōI say [this] : δὲdeNow τοῖςtoisto the ἀγάμοιςagamoisunmarried καὶkaiand ταῖςtais- χήραιςchēraiswidows καλὸνkalon[It is] good αὐτοῖςautoisfor them ἐστινestinit is ἐὰνeanvvv μείνωσινmeinōsinto remain [unmarried] , ὡςhōsas κἀγώkagōI am .
9εἰeiif δὲdeBut οὐκoukvvv ἐγκρατεύονταιenkrateuontaithey cannot control themselves , γαμησάτωσανgamēsatōsanlet them marry . κρεῖσσονkreissoneven better . γὰρgarFor ἐστίestiI have γαμῆσαι*gamēsaito marry ἢēthan πυροῦσθαιpyrousthaito burn with passion .
10ΤοῖςToisTo the δὲde- γεγαμηκόσιgegamekosimarried παραγγέλλωparangellōI give this command οὐκouk(not ἐγὼegōI , ἀλλ’all’but ὁhohe who ΚύριοςKyriosLord γυναῖκαgynaikawife ? ἀπὸapofrom ἀνδρὸςandros[her] husband . μὴmēvvv χωρισθῆναιchōristhēnaimust not separate
11ἐὰνeanif δὲdeBut καὶkai- χωρισθῇchōristhēshe [does] , μενέτωmenetōshe must remain ἄγαμοςagamosunmarried ἢēor else τῷtōto [her] ἀνδρὶandrihusband . καταλλαγήτωkatallagētōbe reconciled καὶkaiAnd ἄνδραandraa husband γυναῖκαgynaika[his] wife . μὴmēvvv ἀφιέναιaphienaimust not divorce
12ΤοῖςToisTo the δὲde- λοιποῖςloipoisrest ἐγώegōI λέγωlegōsay this οὐχouch([I,] not ὁhothe ΚύριοςKyriosLord) : εἴeiIf τιςtisa ἀδελφὸςadelphosbrother γυναῖκαgynaikawife ἔχειecheihas ἄπιστονapistonan unbelieving καὶkaiand αὕτηhautēshe συνευδοκεῖsyneudokeiis willing οἰκεῖνoikeinto live μετ’met’with αὐτοῦautouhim , μὴmēvvv ἀφιέτωaphietōhe must not divorce αὐτήνautēnher .
13καὶkaiAnd γυνὴgynēwoman ‹εἴeiif τις›tisa ἔχειecheihas ἄνδραandrahusband ἄπιστονapistonan unbelieving καὶkaiand αὐτὸςautoshe συνευδοκεῖsyneudokeiis willing οἰκεῖνoikeinto live μετ’met’with αὐτῆςautēsher , μὴmēvvv ἀφιέτωaphietōshe must not divorce αὐτῶνautōnown
14ἡγίασταιhēgiastaiis sanctified γὰρgarFor ὁhothe ἀνὴρanērhusband ὁho- ἄπιστοςapistosunbelieving ἐνenthrough τῇtē[his] γυναικίgynaiki[believing] wife , καὶkaiand ἡγίασταιhēgiastaiis sanctified ἡhēthe γυνὴgynēwife ἡhē- ἄπιστοςapistosunbelieving ἐνenthrough τῷtō[her] ἀνδρὶandrihusband . ἐπεὶepeiOtherwise ἄραara. . . τὰta- τέκναteknachildren ὑμῶνhymōnyour ἀκάθαρτάakathartaunclean , ἐστίestiI have νῦνnynnow δὲdebut ἅγιάhagiaholy . ἐστινestinthey are
15ΕἰEiif δὲdeBut ὁhothe ἄπιστοςapistosunbeliever χωρίζεταιchōrizetaileaves , χωριζέσθωchōrizesthōlet him go . οὐouvvv δεδούλωταιdedoulōtaiis not bound ὁho- ἀδελφὸςadelphosbrother ἢēor ἢēor ἀδελφὴadelphēsister ἐνenin τοῖςtois- τοιούτοιςtoioutoissuch [cases] . ἐνenin δὲde- εἰρήνῃeirēnēpeace . κέκληκενkeklēkenhas called ἡμᾶςhēmasus , ὁho- ΘεόςTheosGod
16τίtiHow γὰρgar- οἶδαςoidasdo you know , γύναιgynaiwife , εἰeiwhether τὸνton[your] ἄνδραandrahusband ? σώσειςsōseisyou will save ἢēOr τίtihow οἶδαςoidasdo you know , ἄνερanerhusband , εἰeiwhether τὴνtēn[your] γυναῖκαgynaikawife ? σώσειςsōseisyou will save
17εἰeiwhether μὴmē. . . , ἑκάστῳhekastōeach one ὡςhōs[that] ἐμέρισεν*emerisenhas assigned [to him] ὁho- ΘεόςTheosGod ἕκαστονhekaston[him] . ὡςhōs[and to which] κέκληκενkeklēkenhas called ὁho- ΚύριοςKyriosLord οὕτωςhoutōs[ the life ] περιπατείτωperipateitōshould lead καὶkai- οὕτωςhoutōsThis [is what] ἐνenin ταῖςtaisthe ἐκκλησίαιςekklēsiaischurches . πάσαιςpasaisall διατάσσομαιdiatassomaiI prescribe
18περιτετμημένοςperitetmēmenosalready circumcised τιςtis{Was} a man ἐκλήθηeklēthēwhen he was called ? μὴmēvvv ἐπισπάσθωepispasthōHe should not become uncircumcised . ἐνenvvv ἀκροβυστίᾳakrobystiastill uncircumcised τιςtis{Was} a man ἐκλήθηeklēthēwhen he was called ? μὴmēvvv περιτεμνέσθωperitemnesthōHe should not be circumcised .
19ἡhē- περιτομὴperitomēCircumcision οὐδένoudennothing ἐστίestiI have καὶkaiand ἡhē- ἀκροβυστίαakrobystiauncircumcision οὐδένoudennothing . ἐστινestinis ἀλλὰalla- τήρησιςtērēsisKeeping ἐντολῶνentolōncommandments [is what counts] . ΘεοῦTheouGod’s
20ἝκαστοςHekastosEach [one] ἐνen- τῇtēthe κλήσειklēseisituation ᾗhē[he was] in ἐκλήθηeklēthēwhen he was called . ἐνenin ταύτῃtautē- μενέτωmenetōshould remain
21δοῦλοςdoulosWere you a slave ἐκλήθηςeklēthēswhen you were called ? μήmēvvv σοιsoiyou — μελέτωmeletōDo not let it concern ἀλλ’all’but εἰeiif καὶkai- δύνασαιdynasaiyou can ἐλεύθεροςeleutheros[your] freedom , γενέσθαιgenesthaigain μᾶλλονmallon- χρῆσαιchrēsaitake the opportunity .
22ὁhohe who γὰρgarFor ἐνenby ΚυρίῳKyriō[the] Lord κληθεὶςklētheiswhen he was called δοῦλοςdoulos[was] a slave ἀπελεύθεροςapeleutherosfreedman . ΚυρίουKyriou[the] Lord’s ἐστίνestinis ὁμοίωςhomoiōsConversely , καὶkai- ὁhohe who ἐλεύθεροςeleutheros[your] freedom , κληθεὶςklētheiswhen he was called δοῦλοςdoulos[was] a slave ἐστίestiI have ΧριστοῦChristouChrist’s
23ΤιμῆςTimēsat a price ; ἠγοράσθητεēgorasthēteYou were bought μὴmē{do} not γίνεσθεginesthebecome δοῦλοιdouloislaves ἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōnof men .
24ἕκαστοςhekastoseach one ἐνenin ᾧhō[situation] ἐκλήθηeklēthēwhen God called him ἀδελφοίadelphoiBrothers , ἐνenin τούτῳtoutōthe μενέτωmenetōshould remain παρὰpara. . . ΘεῷTheō. . . .
25ΠερὶPeriabout δὲdeNow τῶνtōn- παρθένωνparthenōnvirgins , ἐπιταγὴνepitagēncommand ΚυρίουKyrioufrom [the] Lord , οὐκoukno ἔχωechōI have γνώμηνgnōmēna judgment δὲdebut δίδωμιdidōmiI give ὡςhōsas [one who] ἠλεημένοςēleēmenosmercy ὑπὸhypoby ΚυρίουKyriou[the] Lord’s πιστὸςpistostrustworthy . εἶναιeinaiis
26ΝομίζωNomizōI think οὖνoun- τοῦτοtouto[it] καλὸνkalongood ὑπάρχεινhyparcheinis διὰdiaBecause of τὴνtēnthe ἐνεστῶσανenestōsanpresent ἀνάγκηνanankēncrisis , ὅτιhoti- καλὸνkalon- ἀνθρώπῳanthrōpōfor a man τὸto- οὕτωςhoutōsas [he is] . εἶναιeinaito remain
27δέδεσαιdedesaiAre you committed γυναικίgynaikito a wife ? μὴmē{Do} not ζήτειzēteiseek λύσινlysinto be released . λέλυσαιlelysaiAre you free ἀπὸapoof γυναικόςgynaikos[commitment] ? μὴmē{Do} not ζήτειzēteilook for γυναῖκαgynaikaa wife .
28ἐὰνeanif δὲdeBut καὶkai- γήμῃς,gemesyou do marry , οὐχouchvvv ἥμαρτεςhēmartesyou have not sinned . καὶkaiAnd ἐὰνeanif γήμῃgēmēmarries , ἡhē- παρθένοςparthenosa virgin οὐχouchvvv ἥμαρτε·emartesinned , θλῖψινthlipsintroubles δὲdeand τῇtēin [this] σαρκὶsarkilife , ἕξουσινhexousinwill face οἱhoi- τοιοῦτοιtoioutoi[those who marry] ἐγὼegōI δὲdeand ὑμῶνhymōnyou [this] . φείδομαιpheidomai[want to] spare
29ΤοῦτοTouto[is] that δέde[What] φημιphēmiI am saying , ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , ὁhothe καιρὸςkairostime συνεσταλμένοςsynestalmenosshort . τὸto- λοιπὸνloiponFrom now on ἐστίνestinis ἵναhina. . . καὶkai. . . οἱhoithose who ἔχοντεςechonteshave γυναῖκαςgynaikaswives ὡςhōsas if μὴmēnone ; ἔχοντεςechontesthey had ὦσι,osihearing . ”
30καὶkai- οἱhoithose who κλαίοντεςklaiontesweep , ὡςhōsas if μὴmēvvv κλαίοντεςklaiontesthey [did not] ; καὶkai- οἱhoithose who χαίροντεςchairontesare joyful , ὡςhōsas if μὴmēvvv χαίροντεςchairontesthey were not ; καὶkai- οἱhoithose who ἀγοράζοντεςagorazontesmake a purchase , ὡςhōsas if μὴmēvvv κατέχοντεςkatechontesthey had nothing ;
31καὶkaiand οἱhoithose who χρώμενοιchrōmenoiuse τὸto[in its] κόσμῳkosmōworld . ΤοῦτοTouto[is] that ὡςhōsas if μὴmēnone ; καταχρώμενοιkatachrōmenoinot dependent on them . παράγειparageiis passing away . γὰρgarFor τὸto[in its] σχῆμαschēmapresent form τοῦtou- κόσμουkosmouworld τούτουtoutouthis
32ΘέλωThelōI want δὲde- ὑμᾶςhymasyou ἀμερίμνουςamerimnousfree from concern . εἶναιeinaito be ὁhoThe ἄγαμοςagamosunmarried man μεριμνᾷmerimnais concerned about τὰtathe [work] τοῦtouof the ΚυρίουKyriouLord , πῶςpōshow ἀρέσειareseihe can please τῷtōthe ΚυρίῳKyriōLord .
33ὁhothe δὲdeBut γαμήσαςgamēsasmarried man μεριμνᾷmerimnais concerned about τὰtathe [affairs] τοῦtouof this κόσμουkosmouworld , πῶςpōshow ἀρέσειareseihe can please τῇtē[his] γυναικίgynaikiwife ,
34μεμέρισταιmemeristai[his interests] are divided . καὶkai- ἡhēThe γυνὴgynēwoman καὶkai[or] ἡhē- παρθένοςparthenosvirgin ἡhē- ἄγαμοςagamosunmarried μεριμνᾷmerimnais concerned about τὰtathe [work] τοῦtouof the ΚυρίουKyriouLord , ἵναhinahow ᾖēshe can be ἁγίαhagiaholy καὶkaiboth σώματιsōmatibody καὶkaiand πνεύματιpneumatispirit . ἡhēthe δὲdeBut γαμήσασαgamēsasamarried woman μεριμνᾷmerimnais concerned about τὰtathe [affairs] τοῦtouof this κόσμουkosmouworld , πῶςpōshow ἀρέσειareseihe can please τῷtō[her] ἀνδρίandrihusband .
35ΤοῦτοToutothis δὲde- πρὸςprosfor τὸto- ὑμῶνhymōnyour αὐτῶνautōnown συμφέρονsympheroncommon good . λέγωlegōI am saying οὐχouchnot ἵναhinato βρόχονbrochon. . . ὑμῖνhyminyou , ἐπιβάλωepibalōrestrict ἀλλὰallabut πρὸςprosin order to promote τὸto- εὔσχημονeuschēmonproper decorum καὶkaiand εὐπάρεδρονeuparedrondevotion τῷtōto the ΚυρίῳKyriōLord . ἀπερισπάστωςaperispastōsundivided
36ΕἰEiif δέdeHowever , τιςtissomeone ἀσχημονεῖνaschēmoneinhe is acting inappropriately ἐπὶepitoward τὴνtēn- παρθένονparthenonbetrothed , αὐτοῦautouhis νομίζειnomizeithinks ἐὰνean[and] if ᾖēshe is ὑπέρακμοςhyperakmosbeyond [her] youth καὶkaiand οὕτωςhoutōs[to marry] , ὀφείλειopheilei[they] ought γίνεσθαιginesthaivvv ὃhoas θέλειtheleihe wishes ; ποιείτωpoieitōlet him do οὐχouchvvv ἁμαρτάνειhamartaneihe is not sinning ; γαμείτωσανgameitōsanthey should get married .
37ὃςhosthe [man who] δὲdeBut ἕστηκενhestēkenestablished ἑδραῖοςhedraios[is] firmly ἐνenin τῇtē- καρδίᾳkardiaheart μὴmēno ἔχωνechōn[and] under ἀνάγκηνanankēnconstraint , ἐξουσίανexousiancontrol δὲde- ἔχειecheiwith περὶperiover τοῦtou- ἰδίουidiou[his] θελήματοςthelēmatoswill καὶkaiand τοῦτοtouto- κέκρικενkekrikenresolve ἐνenin τῇtē- καρδίᾳkardiaheart αὐτοῦautouhis τοῦtou- τηρεῖνtērein[not to marry] τὴνtēn- ἑαυτοῦheautouthe παρθένονparthenonvirgin , καλῶςkalōswell . ποιεῖpoieidoes
38ὭστεHōsteSo then καὶkai. . . , ὁhohe who ἐκγαμίζωνekgamizon[marries] καλῶςkalōswell . ποιεῖpoieidoes ὁhohe who δὲdeBut μὴmē{does} not ἐκγαμίζωνekgamizon[marries] κρεῖσσονkreissoneven better . ποιεῖpoieidoes
39ΓυνὴGynēA wife δέδεταιdedetaiis bound νόμῳnomōLaw ἐφ’eph’- ὅσονhosonas long as ζῇzēhe lives . ὁho[her] ἀνήρanērhusband αὐτῆςautēsto her ἐὰνeanif δὲdeBut κοιμηθῇkoimēthēdies , ὁho[her] ἀνήρanērhusband αὐτῆςautēsto her ἐλευθέραeleutherafree ἐστὶνestinshe is ᾧhōanyone θέλειtheleishe wishes , γαμηθῆναιgamēthēnaito marry μόνονmononas long as ἐνen[he] belongs to ΚυρίῳKyriō[the] Lord .
40μακαριωτέραmakariōterahappier δέdehowever , ἐστινestinshe is ἐὰνeanif οὕτωhoutōso μείνῃmeinēshe remains κατὰkataIn τὴνtēn- ἐμὴνemēnmy γνώμηνgnōmēnjudgment , δοκῶdokōI think that δὲdeAnd κἀγὼkagōI too ΠνεῦμαPneuma[the] Spirit ΘεοῦTheouof God . ἔχεινecheinhave
