2κατὰkataAs was δὲde- τὸto[his] εἰωθὸςeiōthoscustom , τῷtō- ΠαύλῳPaulōPaul εἰσέλθῃeiselthēwill never enter πρὸςpros. . . αὐτοὺςautous[the synagogue] , καὶkaiand ἐπὶepion σάββαταsabbataSabbaths τρίαtriathree διελέγετοdielegetohe reasoned αὐτοῖςautoiswith them ἀπὸapofrom τῶνtōnthe γραφῶνgraphōnScriptures ,

3διανοίγωνdianoigōnexplaining καὶkaiand παρατιθέμενοςparatithemenosproving ὅτιhotithat τὸνtonthe ΧριστὸνChristonChrist ἔδειedeihad to παθεῖνpatheinsuffer καὶkaiand ἀναστῆναιanastēnairise ἐκekfrom νεκρῶνnekrōn[the] dead . καὶkaiand ὅτιhotithat ΟὗτόςHoutos“ This ἐστινestinis ὁhothe ΧριστόςChristosChrist , ” ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ὃνhon- ἐγὼegōI καταγγέλλωkatangellōam proclaiming ὑμῖνhyminto you

4καὶkai- τινεςtinesSome ἐξexof αὐτῶνautōn[the Jews] ἐπείσθησανepeisthēsanwere persuaded καὶkaiand προσεκληρώθησανproseklērōthēsanjoined τῷtō- ΠαύλῳPaulōPaul καὶkaiand τῷtō- ΣιλᾷSilaSilas , τῶνtōnof τεteand σεβομένωνsebomenōnGod-fearing ἙλλήνωνHellēnōnGreeks πολὺpolya large πλῆθοςplēthosnumber γυναικῶνgynaikōnwomen . τεteand τῶνtōn- πρώτωνprōtōnleading οὐκouk[quite] ὀλίγαιoligaia few

5προσλαβόμενοιproslabomenoithey brought in δὲdehowever , οἱhoiThe ἀπειθοῦντεςapeithountesunbelieving ἸουδαῖοιIoudaioiJews , τῶνtōn- ἀγοραίωνagoraiōnmarketplace , τινὰςtinassome ἄνδραςandras. . . πονηροὺςponēroustroublemakers καὶkai[So] ὀχλοποιήσαντεςochlopoiēsantesformed a mob , ἐθορύβουνethoryboun[and] sent the city into an uproar τὴνtēn. . . πόλινpolin. . . . ἐπιστάντεςepistantesThey raided τῇtē- τῇtē- οἰκίᾳoikiahouse ἸάσονοςIasonosJason’s ἐζήτουνezētounin search of αὐτοὺςautous[Paul and Silas] , ἀγαγεῖνagageinto bring εἰςeisto τὸνtonthe δῆμονdēmonpeople .

6μὴmēvvv εὑρόντεςheurontesthey could not find δὲdeBut when αὐτοὺςautousthem , ἔσυρονesyronthey dragged τὸνtonthe ἸάσοναIasonaJason καίkaiand τιναςtinassome other ἀδελφοὺςadelphousbrothers ἐπὶepibefore τοὺςtousthe πολιτάρχαςpolitarchascity officials , βοῶντεςboōntesshouting ὅτιhoti- , ΟἱHoiwho τὴνtēnvvv οἰκουμένηνoikoumenēnthe world {upside down} ἀναστατώσαντεςanastatōsanteshave turned οὗτοιhoutoi“ These [men] καὶkai. . . ἐνθάδεenthadehere , πάρεισινpareisinhave now come

7οὓςhous. . . . ὑποδέδεκταιhypodedektaihas welcomed them into his home ἸάσωνIasōn[and] Jason καὶkai. . . οὗτοιhoutoiThey πάντεςpantes{are} all ἀπέναντιapenanti. . . τῶνtōn- δογμάτωνdogmatōndecrees , ΚαίσαροςKaisarosCaesar’s πράσσουσι*prassousidefying βασιλέαbasileaking , ἕτερονheteronanother λέγοντεςlegontessaying that εἶναιeinaithere is ἸησοῦνIēsoun[ named ] Jesus ! ”

8ἘτάραξανEtaraxanwere greatly disturbed . δὲde- τὸνtonthe ὄχλονochloncrowd καὶkaiand τοὺςtous- πολιτάρχαςpolitarchascity officials ἀκούονταςakouontasOn hearing ταῦταtautathis ,

9καὶkaiand λαβόντεςlabontesthey collected τὸto- ἱκανὸνhikanonbond παρὰparafrom τοῦtou- ἸάσονοςIasonosJason καὶkaiand τῶνtōnthe λοιπῶνloipōnothers , ἀπέλυσανapelysan[and then] released αὐτούςautousthem .

10ΟἱHoithe δὲde- ἀδελφοὶadelphoibrothers εὐθέωςeutheōsAs soon as διὰdia- τῆςtēs- νυκτὸςnyktosnight [had fallen] , ἐξέπεμψανexepempsansent τόνton- τεte- ΠαῦλονPaulonPaul καὶkaiand τὸνton- ΣιλᾶνSilanSilas εἰςeis{away} to ΒέροιανBeroianBerea . οἵτινεςhoitines- παραγενόμενοιparagenomenoiOn arriving [there] , εἰςeisinto τὴνtēnthe συναγωγὴνsynagōgēnsynagogue . ἀπῄεσανapēesanthey went τῶνtōn- ἸουδαίωνIoudaiōnJewish

11οὗτοιhoutoi[the Bereans] δὲdeNow ἦσανēsanwere εὐγενέστεροιeugenesteroimore noble-minded τῶνtōnthan the ἐνenvvv ΘεσσαλονίκῃThessalonikēThessalonians , οἵτινεςhoitines[for] ἐδέξαντοedexantothey received τὸνtonthe λόγονlogonmessage μετὰmetawith πάσηςpasēsgreat προθυμίαςprothymiaseagerness τὸtovvv καθ’kath’every ἡμέρανhēmeranday ἀνακρίνοντεςanakrinontes[and] examined τὰςtasthe γραφὰςgraphasScriptures εἰei[to see] if ἔχοιechoiwere ταῦταtautathese [teachings] οὕτωhoutōso

12πολλοὶpolloimany μὲνmen- οὖνounAs a result , ἐξexof αὐτῶνautōnthem ἐπίστευσανepisteusanbelieved , καὶkaialong with τῶνtōn- ἙλληνίδωνHellēnidōnGreek γυναικῶνgynaikōnwomen τῶνtōn- εὐσχημόνωνeuschēmonōnprominent καὶkaiand ἀνδρῶνandrōnmen . οὐκouk[quite] ὀλίγοιoligoia few

13ὩςHōswhen δὲdeBut ἔγνωσανegnōsanlearned οἱhoithe ἀπὸapofrom τῆςtēs- ΘεσσαλονίκηςThessalonikēsThessalonica ἸουδαῖοιIoudaioiJews ὅτιhotithat καὶkaivvv ἐνenin τῇtē- ΒεροίᾳBeroiaBerea , κατηγγέληkatēngelēwas also proclaiming ὑπὸhypo- τοῦtou- ΠαύλουPaulouPaul ὁhothe λόγοςlogosword τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God ἦλθονēlthonthey went κἀκεῖkakeithere themselves σαλεύοντεςsaleuontesto incite τοὺςtousthe ὄχλουςochlouscrowds .

14εὐθέωςeutheōsimmediately δὲde- τότεtotevvv τὸνton- ΠαῦλονPaulonPaul ἐξαπέστειλανexapesteilansent οἱhoiThe ἀδελφοὶadelphoibrothers πορεύεσθαιporeuesthaito ὩςHōswhen ἐπὶepi- τὴνtēnthe θάλασσανthalassan[coast] , ὑπέμενονupemenonremained δὲde- ὁho- τεte- ΣιλᾶςSilasSilas καὶkaiand ὁho- ΤιμόθεοςTimotheosTimothy ἐκεῖekei[in Berea] .

15οἱhoiThose who δὲde- καθιστῶντεςkathistontesescorted τὸνton- ΠαῦλονPaulonPaul ἤγαγονēgagonbrought [him] αὐτὸνautonhim ἕωςheōsto ἈθηνῶνAthēnōnAthens καὶkaiand then λαβόντεςlabonteswith ἐντολὴνentolēninstructions πρὸςprosfor τὸνton- ΣιλᾶνSilanSilas καὶkaiand τὸνton- ΤιμόθεονTimotheonTimothy ἵναhinato ὡςhōsas τάχισταtachistasoon as possible . ἔλθωσινelthōsin[join] πρὸςpros. . . αὐτὸνautonhim ἐξῄεσανexēesan[returned]

16ἘνEnin δὲde[While] ταῖςtais- ἈθήναιςAthēnaisAthens , ἐκδεχομένουekdechomenouwas waiting for αὐτοὺςautousthem τοῦtou- ΠαύλουPaulouPaul παρωξύνετοparōxynetohe was deeply disturbed τὸto- πνεῦμαpneumaspirit αὐτοῦautouhis ἐνenin αὐτῷautō- θεωροῦντιtheorountito see that κατείδωλονkateidōlonfull of idols . οὖσανousanwas τὴνtēnthe πόλινpolincity

17διελέγετοdielegetohe reasoned μὲνmen- οὖνounSo ἐνenin τῇtēthe συναγωγῇsynagōgēsynagogue τοῖςtoiswith the ἸουδαίοιςIoudaioisJews καὶkaiand τοῖςtois- σεβομένοιςsebomenoisGod-fearing [Gentiles] , καὶkaiand ἐνenin τῇtēthe ἀγορᾷagoramarketplace κατὰkatavvv πᾶσανpasaneach ἡμέρανhēmeranday . πρὸςproswith τοὺςtousthose παρατυγχάνονταςparatynchanontashe met

18ΤινὲςTinesSome δὲde- καὶkaiand τῶνtōn- Ἐπικουρείων*EpikoureiōnEpicurean καὶkaiand ΣτοϊκῶνStoikōnStoic φιλοσόφωνphilosophōnphilosophers συνέβαλλονsyneballonbegan to debate αὐτῷautōwith him . καίkai- τινεςtinesSome [of them] ἔλεγονelegonasked , ΤίTi“ What ἂνan. . . θέλοιtheloitrying ὁho- σπερμολόγοςspermologosbabbler οὗτοςhoutos{is} this λέγεινlegeinto say ? ” οἱhoiOthers [said] , δέde- ΞένωνXenōnforeign δαιμονίωνdaimoniōngods . ” δοκεῖdokei“ He seems καταγγελεὺςkatangeleusadvocating εἶναιeinaito be ὅτιhoti[They said this] because τὸνton- ἸησοῦνIēsounof Jesus καὶkaiand τὴνtēnthe ἀνάστασινanastasinresurrection . εὐηγγελίζετοeuēngelizeto[Paul] was proclaiming the good news αὐτοῖςautoisthem .

19ἘπιλαβόμενοίEpilabomenoithey took τε*teSo αὐτοῦautou[Paul] ἐπὶepito τὸνtonthe ἌρειονAreionAreopagus πάγονpagon. . . , ἤγαγονēgagon[and] brought [him] λέγοντεςlegontes[where] they asked [him] , ΔυνάμεθαDynametha“ May we γνῶναιgnōnaiknow τίςtiswhat ἡhē- καινὴkainēnew αὕτηhautēthis ἡhē- ὑπὸhypovvv σοῦsou[that] you λαλουμένηlaloumenēare presenting ? διδαχήdidachēteaching [is]

20ξενίζονταxenizontastrange notions γάρgarFor τιναtinasome εἰσφέρειςeisphereisyou are bringing εἰςeisto τὰςtas- ἀκοὰςakoasears , ἡμῶνhēmōnour βουλόμεθαboulomethawe want οὖνoun[and] γνῶναιgnōnaito know τιti- ἂνan. . . θέλοιtheloitrying ταῦταtauta[they] εἶναιeinai. . . . ”

21ἈθηναῖοιAthēnaioi[the] Athenians δὲdeNow πάντεςpantesall καὶkaiand οἱhoi- ἐπιδημοῦντεςepidēmounteswho lived there ξένοιxenoiforeigners εἰςeis[doing] οὐδὲνoudennothing ἕτερονheteron[more] ηὐκαίρουνēukairounspent their time ἢēthan λέγεινlegeinarticulating τιti- ἢēand ἀκούεινakoueinhearing καινότερονkainoteronnew [ideas] .

22ΣταθεὶςStatheisstood up δὲdeThen [ὁ]ho- ΠαῦλοςPaulosPaul ἐνenin μέσῳmesō[the] meeting τοῦtouof the ἈρείουAreiouAreopagus ΠάγουPagou. . . ἔφηephē[and] said , ἌνδρεςAndres“ Men ἈθηναῖοιAthēnaioi[of] Athens , κατὰkatain πάνταpantaevery way ὡςhōsthat δεισιδαιμονεστέρουςdeisidaimonesterousvery religious . ὑμᾶςhymasyou [are] θεωρῶtheōrōI see

23διερχόμενοςdierchomenosas I walked around γὰρgarFor καὶkaiand ἀναθεωρῶνanatheōrōnexamined τὰta- σεβάσματαsebasmataobjects of worship , ὑμῶνhymōnyour εὗρονheuronI even found καὶkai. . . βωμὸνbōmonan altar ἐνenvvv ᾧhōwith ἐπεγέγραπτοepegegraptothis inscription : ΑΓΝΩΣΤΩAGNŌSTŌTO AN UNKNOWN ΘΕΩTHEŌGOD . ὃνhon- οὖνounAs a result , ἀγνοοῦντεςagnoountesas something unknown , εὐσεβεῖτεeusebeiteyou worship τοῦτονtoutonthese ἐγὼegōI καταγγέλλωkatangellō[now] proclaim ὑμῖνhyminto you .

24ὉHoThe ΘεὸςTheosGod ὁhowho ποιήσαςpoiēsasmade τὸνtonthe κόσμονkosmonworld καὶkaiand πάνταpantaeverything τὰta- ἐνenin αὐτῷautōit οὗτοςhoutos- οὐρανοῦouranouof heaven καὶkaiand γῆςgēsearth ΚύριοςKyrios[the] Lord ὑπάρχωνhyparchōnis οὐκouk[and] {does} not ἐνenin χειροποιήτοιςcheiropoiētoismade by [human] hands . ναοῖςnaoistemples κατοικεῖkatoikeilive

25οὐδὲoudeNor ὑπὸhypoby χειρῶνcheirōnhands , ἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōnof men , θεραπεύεταιtherapeuetaiis He served προσδεόμενόςprosdeomenosas if He needed τινοςtinosanything , αὐτὸςautos[because] He Himself διδοὺςdidousgives πᾶσιpasieveryone ζωὴνzōēnlife καὶkaiand πνοὴνpnoēnbreath καὶkaiand τὰta- πάνταpantaeverything [else] .

26ἐποίησέepoiesehas done τεte- ἐξexFrom ἑνὸςhenosone [man] αἵματοςhaimatosfrom bleeding πᾶνpanevery ἔθνοςethnosnation ἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōnof men , κατοικεῖνkatoikeinthat they should inhabit ἐπὶepi. . . πᾶνpanevery τὸtothat the πρόσωπονprosōpon. . . τῆςtēsthe γῆςgēsearth ; ὁρίσαςhorisasand He determined προστεταγμένουςprostetagmenous[their] appointed καιροὺςkairoustimes καὶkaiand τὰςtasthe ὁροθεσίαςhorothesiasboundaries τῆςtēs- κατοικίαςkatoikiaslands . αὐτῶνautōnof their

27ζητεῖνzētein[ God intended that ] they would seek τὸνton- ΚύριονKyrion[the] Lord εἰeivvv ἄραara[and] perhaps γεge- ψηλαφήσειανpsēlaphēseianreach out for αὐτὸνautonHim καὶkaiand εὕροιενheuroienfind [Him] , καίkaithough γεge. . . οὐounot μακρὰνmakranfar ἀπὸapofrom ἑνὸςhenosone ἑκάστουhekastoueach ἡμῶνhēmōnof us . ὑπάρχονταhyparchontaHe is

28ἘνEnin αὐτῷautōHim γὰρgar‘ For ζῶμενzōmenwe live καὶkaiand κινούμεθαkinoumethamove καὶkaiand ἐσμένesmenhave our being .’ ὡςhōsAs καίkai- τινεςtinessome τῶνtōn[own] καθ’kath’vvv ὑμᾶςhymasof your ποιητῶνpoiētōnpoets εἰρήκασινeirēkasinhave said , ΤοῦTou[His] γὰρgar- καὶkai‘ - γένοςgenosoffspring .’ ἐσμένesmenWe are

29γένοςgenosoffspring .’ οὖνounTherefore , ὑπάρχοντεςhyparchontesbeing τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , οὐκouknot ὀφείλομενopheilomenwe should νομίζεινnomizeinthink χρυσῷchrysōgold ἢēor ἀργύρῳargyrōsilver ἢēor λίθῳlithōstone , χαράγματιcharagmatian image formed τέχνηςtechnēsskill καὶkaiand ἐνθυμήσεωςenthymēseōsimagination . ἀνθρώπουanthrōpouby man’s τὸtothat the ΘεῖονTheionDivine Being εἶναιeinaiis ὅμοιονhomoionlike

30ΤοὺςTousof μὲνmenAlthough οὖνoun- χρόνουςchronous[earlier] times , τῆςtēsthe ἀγνοίαςagnoiasignorance ὑπεριδὼνhyperidōnoverlooked ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod τὰta- νῦνnynvvv παραγγέλλει*parangelleiHe now commands τοῖςtois- ἀνθρώποιςanthrōpoispeople πᾶσιpasieveryone πανταχοῦpantachoueverywhere μετανοεῖνmetanoeinto repent .

31διότιdiotibecause ἔστησενestēsenHe has set ἡμέρανhēmerana day ἐνenvvv ᾗhēwhen μέλλειmelleiHe will κρίνεινkrineinjudge τὴνtēnthe οἰκουμένηνoikoumenēnworld ἐνenwith δικαιοσύνῃdikaiosynējustice ἐνenby ἀνδρὶandrithe Man ᾧhō- ὥρισε,oriseHe has appointed . πίστινpistinproof [of this] παρασχὼνparaschōnHe has given πᾶσινpasinto everyone ἀναστήσαςanastēsasby raising αὐτὸνautonHim ἐκekfrom νεκρῶνnekrōn[the] dead . ”

32ἈκούσαντεςAkousantesthey heard about δὲde[When] ἀνάστασινanastasin[the] resurrection νεκρῶνnekrōnof [the] dead , οἱhoisome μὲνmen- ἐχλεύαζονechleuazonbegan to mock [him] , οἱhoi[others] δὲdebut εἰπὼνeipōnHe said ἈκουσόμεθάAkousometha“ We want to hear σουsouyou πάλινpalinagain περὶperion τούτουtoutouthis [topic] . ”

33καὶkai. . . οὕτωςhoutōsAt that ὁho- , ΠαῦλοςPaulosPaul ἐξῆλθενexēlthenleft ἐκekvvv μέσουmesou[the Areopagus] . αὐτῶνautōnvvv

34τινὲςtinessome δὲdeBut ἄνδρεςandres- κολληθέντεςkollēthentesjoined αὐτῷautōhim ἐπίστευσανepisteusan[and] believed , ἐνenincluding οἷςhois. . . καὶkai. . . ΔιονύσιοςDionysiosDionysius ὁhothe ἈρεοπαγίτηςAreopagitēsAreopagite , καὶkai- γυνὴgynēa woman ὀνόματιonomatinamed ΔάμαριςDamarisDamaris , καὶkaiand ἕτεροιheteroiothers σὺνsyn[who were] with αὐτοῖςautoisthem .
