2καὶkaiand εἶπενeipensaid τοῖςtoisto παισὶνpaisinservants , αὐτοῦautouhis ΟὗτόςHoutos“ This ἐστινestinis ἸωάννηςIōannēsJohn ὁhothe ΒαπτιστήςBaptistēsBaptist ; αὐτὸςautoshe ἠγέρθηēgerthēhas risen ἀπὸapofrom τῶνtōnthe νεκρῶνnekrōndead ! καὶkai- διὰdiais why τοῦτοtoutoThat αἱhai- δυνάμειςdynameismiraculous powers ἐνεργοῦσινenergousinare at work ἐνenin αὐτῷautōhim . ”
3ὉHo- γὰρgar[Now] ἩρῴδηςHērōdēsHerod κρατήσαςkratēsashad arrested τὸνton- ἸωάννηνIōannēnJohn ἔδησενedēsen[and] bound ‹αὐτὸν›autonhim καὶkaiand ἔθετοethetoput [him] ἐνenin φυλακῇphylakēprison διὰdiaon account of ἩρῳδιάδαHērōdiadaHerodias , τὴνtēn- γυναῖκαgynaikawife , ΦιλίππουPhilippouPhilip’s τοῦtou- ἀδελφοῦadelphoubrother αὐτοῦautouhis
4ἔλεγενelegenhad been telling γὰρgarbecause αὐτῷautōhim ὉHo- ἸωάννηςIōannēsJohn ΟὐκOukvvv ἔξεστίexestiis unlawful σοιsoifor you ἔχεινecheinto have αὐτήνautēnher . ”
5καὶkaiAlthough θέλωνthelōn[Herod] wanted αὐτὸνauton[John] , ἀποκτεῖναιapokteinaito kill ἐφοβήθηephobēthēhe was afraid τὸνtonof the ὄχλονochlonpeople , ὅτιhotibecause ὡςhōsas προφήτηνprophētēna prophet . αὐτὸνauton[John] εἶχονeichonthey regarded
6γενεσίωνgenesionbirthday δὲdehowever , ἀγομένωνagomenonevent τοῦtouOn ἩρῴδουHērōdouHerod’s ὠρχήσατοōrchēsatodanced ἡhēthe θυγάτηρthygatērdaughter τῆςtēs- ἩρῳδιάδοςHērōdiadosof Herodias ἐνenbefore them τῷtō. . . μέσῳmesō. . . καὶkaiand ἤρεσεeresepleased τῷtō- ἩρῴδῃHērōdēHerod
7ὅθενhothenso much that μεθ’meth’with ὅρκουhorkouan oath ὡμολόγησενhōmologēsenhe promised αὐτῇautēto her δοῦναιdounaito give ὃhowhatever ἐὰνean. . . αἰτήσηταιaitēsētaishe asked .
8ἩHē- δὲde- προβιβασθεῖσαprobibastheisaPrompted ὑπὸhypoby τῆςtēs- μητρὸςmētrosmother , αὐτῆςautēsher ΔόςDos“ Give μοιmoime φησίνphēsinshe said , ὯδεHōdehere ἐπὶepion πίνακιpinakia platter τὴνtēnthe κεφαλὴνkephalēnhead ἸωάννουIōannouof John τοῦtouthe ΒαπτιστοῦBaptistouBaptist . ”
9ΚαὶKai- ἐλυπήθηelupethewas grieved , ὁhoThe βασιλεὺςbasileusking διὰdiabut because of δὲde- τοὺςtous[his] ὅρκουςhorkousoaths καὶkaiand τοὺςtousvvv συνανακειμένουςsynanakeimenoushis guests , ἐκέλευσεekeleuse[and] directed that δοθῆναιdothēnai[her wish] be granted
10καὶkaiand πέμψαςpempsassent {to have} ἀπεκεφάλισεapekephalisebeheaded ‹τὸν›ton- ἸωάννηνIōannēnJohn ἐνenin τῇtēthe φυλακῇphylakēprison .
11ΚαὶKai- ἠνέχθηēnechthēwas brought in ἡhē- κεφαλὴkephalēhead αὐτοῦautou[John’s] ἐπὶepion πίνακιpinakia platter καὶkaiand ἐδόθηedothēpresented τῷtōto the κορασίῳkorasiōgirl , καὶkai- ἤνεγκεenegke[who] carried [it] τῇtēto μητρὶmētrimother . αὐτῆςautēsher
12καὶkaiThen προσελθόντεςproselthontescame [and] οἱhoi- μαθηταὶmathētaidisciples αὐτοῦautou[John’s] ἦρανērantook τὸto[his] σῶμαsōmabody καὶkaiand ἔθαψανethapsanburied αὐτῷautōHim ΚαὶKaiWhen ἐλθόντεςelthontesthey went ἀπήγγειλανapēngeilan[and] informed τῷtō- ἸησοῦIēsouJesus .
13ἈκούσαςAkousasheard [ about John ] , δὲdeWhen ὁho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ἀνεχώρησενanechōrēsenHe withdrew ἐκεῖθενekeithen. . . ἐνenby πλοίῳploiōboat εἰςeisto ἔρημονerēmona solitary τόπονtoponplace . κατ’kat’vvv ἰδίανidianprivately καὶkaiBut ἀκούσαντεςakousantesfound out [about it] οἱhoithe ὄχλοιochloicrowds ἠκολούθησανēkolouthēsan[and] followed αὐτῷautōHim πεζῇpezēon foot ἀπὸapofrom τῶνtōnthe πόλεωνpoleōntowns .
14ΚαὶKaiWhen ἐξελθὼνexelthōnHe stepped ashore εἶδεeidesaw πολὺνpolyna large ὄχλονochloncrowd , καὶkai- ἐσπλαγχνίσθηesplanchnisthēHe had compassion ἐπ’ep’on αὐτοῖςautoisthem καὶkaiand ἐθεράπευσεetherapeuse[Jesus] healed τοὺςtous- ἀρρώστουςarrōstoussick . αὐτῶνautōntheir
15ὈψίαςOpsiasevening δὲdeWhen γενομένηςgenomenēscame , προσῆλθονprosēlthoncame αὐτῷautōto Him οἱhoithe μαθηταὶmathētaidisciples αὐτοῦautou[John’s] λέγοντεςlegontes[and] said , ἜρημόςErēmosa desolate ἐστινestinis ὁho“ This τόποςtoposplace , καὶkaiand ἡhēthe ὥραhōrahour ἤδηēdēis already late παρῆλθενparēlthen. . . . ἀπόλυσονapolysonDismiss τοὺςtousthe ὄχλουςochlouscrowds ἵναhinaso ἀπελθόντεςapelthontesthey can go εἰςeisto τὰςtasthe κώμαςkōmasvillages ἀγοράσωσινagorasōsin[and] buy ἑαυτοῖςheautoisthemselves βρώματαbrōmatasome food . ”
16ὉHo- δὲde- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus εἶπενeipenreplied αὐτοῖςautois- . ΟὐOunot χρείανchreianneed ἔχουσινechousin“ They do ἀπελθεῖνapeltheinto go away , ” δότεdotegive αὐτοῖςautoisthem ὑμεῖςhymeis“ You φαγεῖνphagein[something] to eat . ”
17ΟἱHoi- δὲde- λέγουσινlegousinthey answered αὐτῷautō- . ΟὐκOuk“ - ἔχομενechomenWe have ὧδεhōdehere εἰeionly μὴmē. . . πέντεpentefive ἄρτουςartousloaves of bread καὶkaiand δύοdyotwo ἰχθύαςichthyasfish , ”
19καὶkaiAnd κελεύσαςkeleusasHe directed τοὺςtousthe ὄχλουςochlouscrowds ἀνακλιθῆναιanaklithēnaito sit down ἐπὶepion τοὺςtousthe χόρτους,khortousgrass . λαβὼνlabōnTaking τοὺςtousthe πέντεpentefive ἄρτουςartousloaves καὶkaiand τοὺςtousthe δύοdyotwo ἰχθύαςichthyasfish ἀναβλέψαςanablepsas[and] looking up εἰςeisto τὸνton- οὐρανὸνouranonheaven , εὐλόγησε,eulogese[Jesus] spoke a blessing καὶkaiThen κλάσαςklasasHe broke ἔδωκεedokegave [it] τοῖςtoisto the μαθηταῖςmathētaisdisciples , τοὺςtousthe ἄρτουςartousloaves οἱhoithe δὲdeand μαθηταὶmathētaidisciples τοῖςtois[gave them] to the ὄχλοιςochloispeople .
20ΚαὶKai- ἔφαγονephagonThey all ate πάντεςpantesvvv ΚαὶKai- ἐχορτάσθησανechortasthēsanwere satisfied , καὶkaiand ἦρανēran[the disciples] picked up τὸtothat περισσεῦονperisseuonwere left over . τῶνtōn- κλασμάτωνklasmatōnof broken pieces δώδεκαdōdekatwelve κοφίνουςkophinousbasketfuls πλήρειςplēreis. . .
21οἱhoivvv δὲde- ἐσθίοντεςesthiontesfed , ἦσανēsanwere ἄνδρεςandresmen ὡσεὶhōseiAbout πεντακισχίλιοιpentakischilioifive thousand χωρὶςchōrisin addition to γυναικῶνgynaikōnwomen καὶkaiand παιδίωνpaidiōnchildren .
22ΚαὶKaivvv εὐθέωςeutheōsImmediately ἠνάγκασενēnankasen[Jesus] made ὁhothe Ἰησοῦς»IēsousJesus τοὺςtous. . . μαθητὰςmathētasdisciples αὐτοῦautouof [Peter] . ἐμβῆναιembēnaiget into εἰςeis. . . τὸtothe πλοῖονploionboat καὶkaiand προάγεινproageingo on ahead of αὐτὸνautonHim εἰςeisto τὸtothe πέρανperanother side , ἕωςheōswhile οὗhou. . . ἀπολύσῃapolysēHe dismissed τοὺςtousthe ὄχλουςochlouscrowds .
23καὶkaiAfter ἀπολύσαςapolysasHe had sent [them] away τοὺςtous. . . ὄχλουςochlous. . . , ἀνέβηanebēHe went up εἰςeison τὸtothe ὄροςorosmountain κατ’kat’by ἰδίανidianHimself προσεύξασθαιproseuxasthaito pray . ὀψίαςopsiasevening δὲdeWhen γενομένηςgenomenēscame , μόνοςmonosalone , ἦνēnHe was ἐκεῖekeithere
24τὸtothe δὲdebut πλοῖονploionboat ἤδηēdēalready μέσονmesonamong [us] . ” τῆςtēs- θαλάσσηςthalassēssea , ἦνēnwas βασανιζόμενονbasanizomenonbuffeted ὑπὸhypoby τῶνtōnthe κυμάτωνkymatōnwaves ἦνēnwas γὰρgarbecause ἐναντίοςenantiosagainst it . ὁhothe ἄνεμοςanemoswind
25ΤετάρτῃTetartēDuring the fourth δὲdevvv φυλακῇphylakēwatch τῆςtēsof the νυκτὸςnyktosnight , ἀπέλθῃapelthēto depart πρὸςprosto αὐτοὺςautousthem , ὁhothe Ἰησοῦς»IēsousJesus περιπατῶνperipatōnwalking ἐπὶepion τῆςtēsof the θαλάσσηςthalassēssea ,
26καὶkaiand ἰδόντεςidontessaw αὐτὸνautonHim οἱhoithe δὲdeWhen μαθηταὶmathētaidisciples ἐπὶepion τὴνtēnthe θάλασσανthalassansea . περιπατοῦνταperipatountawalking ἐταράχθησανetarachthēsanthey were terrified . λέγοντεςlegontesthey said ὅτιhoti- , ΦάντασμάPhantasmaa ghost ! ” ἐστι,estiis καὶkaiand ἀπὸapoin τοῦtou- φόβουphoboufear . ἔκραξανekraxancried out
27ΕὐθέωςEutheōsImmediately δὲde- ἐλάλησενelalēsenspoke up αὐτοῖςautois. . . ὁho. . . Ἰησοῦς»IēsousJesus λέγωνlegōn- ΘαρσεῖτεTharseite“ Take courage ! ἐγώegōI . εἰμιeimiIt is μὴmē[Do] not φοβεῖσθεphobeisthebe afraid . ”
28ἈποκριθεὶςApokritheisreplied δὲde- αὐτῷautō. . . , ὁho. . . ΠέτροςPetrosPeter εἰπὲeipesay ΚύριεKyrie“ Lord , εἰeiif σὺsyYou , ” εἶei[it] is κέλευσόνkeleuson“ command μεmeme πρὸςprosto σὲseYou ἐλθεῖνeltheinto come ἐπὶepion τὰtathe ὕδαταhydatawater . ”
29ὉHovvv , ” δὲdevvv εἶπενeipensaid [Jesus] . ἘλθέElthe“ Come ΚαὶKaiThen καταβὰςkatabasgot down out ἀπὸapoof τοῦtouthe πλοίουploiouboat , [ὁ]ho- ΠέτροςPetrosPeter περιεπάτησενperiepatēsenwalked ἐπὶepion τὰtathe ὕδαταhydatawater , ἐλθεῖνeltheinto come πρὸςprosto τὸνton- ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus .
30βλέπωνblepōnwhen he saw δὲdeBut τὸνtonthe ἄνεμονanemonof the wind , ‹ἰσχυρὸν›ischyronstrength ἐφοβήθηephobēthēhe was afraid , καὶkaiand ἀρξάμενοςarxamenosbeginning καταποντίζεσθαιkatapontizesthaito sink , ἔκραξεekraxecried out λέγωνlegōn- , ΚύριεKyrie“ Lord , σῶσόνsōsonsave μεmeme ! ”
31ΕὐθέωςEutheōsImmediately δὲde- ὁho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ἐκτείναςekteinasreached out τὴνtēn[His] χεῖραcheirahand ἐπελάβετοepelabeto[and] took hold αὐτοῦautouof [Peter] . καὶkai- λέγειlegeiHe said αὐτῷautō- , ὈλιγόπιστεOligopiste“ [You] of little faith , ” εἰςeis“ why τίti. . . ἐδίστασαςedistasasdid you doubt ? ”
32ΚαὶKaiAnd ἐμβάντωνembantongot into αὐτῶνautōnwhen εἰςeisinto τὸtothe πλοῖονploionboat , ἐκόπασενekopasendied down . ὁhothe ἄνεμοςanemoswind
33οἱhoithose who [were] δὲdeThen ἐνenin τῷtōthe πλοίῳploiōboat ἐλθόντεςelthontesthey went προσεκύνησανprosekynēsanworshiped αὐτῷautōHim , λέγοντεςlegontessaying , ἈληθῶςAlēthōs“ Truly ΘεοῦTheouof God ! ” ΥἱὸςHuiosthe Son εἶeiYou are
34ΚαὶKaiWhen διαπεράσαντεςdiaperasantesthey had crossed over , ἦλθονēlthonthey landed εἰςeisat τὴνtēn. . . γῆνgēn. . . ΓεννησαρέτGennēsaretGennesaret .
35καὶkaiAnd when ἐπιγνόντεςepignontesrecognized αὐτὸνauton[Jesus] , οἱhoithe ἄνδρεςandresmen τοῦtou- τόπουtopouplace ἐκείνουekeinouof that ἀπέστειλανapesteilanthey sent word εἰςeisto ὅληνholēnall τὴνtēnthe περίχωρονperichōronsurrounding region . ἐκείνηνekeinēn- καὶkai- προσήνεγκανprosēnenkan[People] brought αὐτῷautōto Him πάνταςpantasall τοὺςtousthe κακῶςkakōssick ἔχονταςechontas-
36καὶkaiand παρεκάλουνparekalounbegged αὐτὸνautonHim ἵναhinato κἂνkanEven if μόνονmononjust ἅψωνταιhapsōntailet them touch τοῦtouthe κρασπέδουkraspedoufringe τοῦtouof ἱματίουhimatioucloak . αὐτοῦautouHis καὶkaiAnd ὅσοιhosoiall who ἥψαντοhēpsantotouched [Him] διεσώθησανdiesōthēsanwere healed .
