4ἐνenIn αὐτῷautōHim ζωὴzōēlife , ἦνēnwas καὶkaiand ἡhē[that] ζωὴzōēlife ἦνēnwas τὸtothe φῶςphōslight τῶνtōn- ἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōnof men .

6ἘγένετοEgenetoThere came ἄνθρωποςanthrōposa man ἀπεσταλμένοςapestalmenoswho was sent παρὰparafrom ΘεοῦTheouGod . ὄνομαonomaname αὐτῷautōHis ἸωάννηςIōannēs[was] John .
7οὗτοςhoutosHe ἦλθενēlthencame εἰςeisas μαρτυρίανmartyriana witness ἵναhinato μαρτυρήσῃmartyrēsētestify περὶperiabout τοῦtouthe φωτόςphōtosLight , ἵναhinaso that πάντεςpanteseveryone πιστεύσωσινpisteusōsinmight believe . δι’di’through αὐτοῦautouhim
8οὐκouknot ἦνēnwas ἐκεῖνοςekeinosHe himself τὸtothe φῶςphōsLight , ἀλλ’all’but ἵναhina- μαρτυρήσῃmartyrēsēhe came to testify περὶperiabout τοῦtouthe φωτόςphōtosLight .
9ἮνĒnwas τῷtōthe φῶςphōsLight τὸto- ἀληθινὸνalēthinontrue ὃhowho φωτίζειphōtizeigives light to πάνταpantaevery ἄνθρωπονanthrōponman ἐρχόμενονerchomenoncoming εἰςeisinto τὸνtonthe κόσμονkosmonworld .

12ὅσοιhosoiall who δὲdeBut ἔλαβονelabondid receive αὐτόνautonHim , ἔδωκενedōkenHe gave αὐτοῖςautoisto ἐξουσίανexousianthe right τέκναteknachildren ΘεοῦTheouof God — γενέσθαιgenesthaito become τοῖςtoisto those πιστεύουσινpisteuousinwho believed εἰςeisin τὸto- ὄνομαonomaname , αὐτοῦautouHis

15ἸωάννηςIōannēsJohn μαρτυρεῖmartyreitestified περὶpericoncerning αὐτοῦautouHim . καὶkai- κέκραγενkekragenHe cried out , λέγωνlegōnsaying , ΟὗτοςHoutos“ This ἦνēnis He ὃνhonof whom εἶπονeiponI said , ὉHo‘ He who ὀπίσωopisōafter μουmoume ἐρχόμενοςerchomenoscomes ἔμπροσθένemprosthensurpassed μουmoume γέγονενgegonenhas ὅτιhotibecause πρῶτόςprōtosbefore μουmoume .’ ” ἦνēnHe was

20καὶkai- ὡμολόγησενhōmologēsenHe did not refuse to confess καὶkai. . . οὐκouk. . . ἠρνήσατοērnēsato. . . , καὶkaibut ὡμολόγησενhōmologēsenopenly declared ὅτιhoti- , ἘγὼEgō“ I οὐκouknot εἰμὶeimiam ὁhothe ΧριστόςChristosChrist . ”
21ΚαὶKai- ἠρώτησανērōtēsanthey inquired αὐτόνauton. . . . ΤίTiwho [are you] ? ” οὖνoun“ Then ἨλίαςĒliasElijah ? ” εἶei“ Are σὺsyyou ΚαὶKai- λέγειlegeiHe said , ΟὐκOuknot . ” εἰμίeimi“ I am ὉHothe προφήτηςprophētēsProphet ? ” εἶei“ Are σύsyyou ΚαὶKai- ἀπεκρίθηapekrithēHe answered , ΟὔOu“ No . ”
22εἶπονeiponI said , οὖνoun“ Then αὐτῷautōto him , ΤίςTis“ Who εἶeiare you ? ἵναhinavvv ἀπόκρισινapokrisinan answer δῶμενdōmenWe need τοῖςtoisfor those πέμψασινpempsasinwho sent ἡμᾶςhēmasus . τίtiWhat λέγειςlegeisdo you say περὶperiabout σεαυτοῦseautouyourself ? ”
23ἜφηEphē[John] replied ἘγὼEgō“ I [am] φωνὴphōnēa voice βοῶντοςboōntosof one calling ἐνenin τῇtēthe ἐρήμῳerēmōwilderness , ΕὐθύνατεEuthynate‘ Make straight τὴνtēnthe ὁδὸνhodonway ΚυρίουKyrioufor [the] Lord .’” καθὼςkathōsin εἶπενeipenthe words of ἨσαΐαςĒsaiasIsaiah ὁhothe προφήτηςprophētēsprophet :
24ΚαὶKaiThen ἀπεσταλμένοιapestalmenoiwho had been sent ἦσανēsan. . . ἐκek. . . τῶνtōnthe ΦαρισαίωνPharisaiōnPharisees
25ΚαὶKaiThen ἠρώτησανērōtēsanasked αὐτὸνautonhim καὶkai- εἶπονeiponsaid , αὐτῷautō- , ΤίTi“ Why οὖνounthen βαπτίζειςbaptizeisdo you baptize , εἰeiif σὺsyyou οὐκouknot εἶeiare ὁhothe ΧριστὸςChristosChrist , οὔτεouteneither ἨλίαςĒliasElijah , οὔτεouteneither ὁhothe προφήτηςprophētēsProphet ? ”
26ἈπεκρίθηApekrithēreplied αὐτοῖςautois. . . ὁho- ἸωάννηςIōannēsJohn λέγωνlegōn. . . , ἘγὼEgō“ I βαπτίζωbaptizōbaptize ἐνenwith ὕδατιhydatiwater , ” μέσοςmesos“ but among δὲde- ὑμῶνhymōnyou ἕστηκεν*hestēkenstands ὃνhon[One] ὑμεῖςhymeisyou οὐκouk{do} not οἴδατεoidateknow .
27αὐτὸςautoshe ἐστινestinThis is ὁhowho ὈπίσωOpisōafter μουmoume ἐρχόμενοςerchomenoscomes ὃςhos- ἔμπροσθένemprosthensurpassed μουmoume γέγονενgegonenhas οὗhouwhom ἐγὼegōI οὐκouk{did} not εἰμὶeimiam ἄξιοςaxiosworthy ἵναhinato λύσωlysōuntie . ” αὐτοῦautou- τὸνtonthe ἱμάνταhimantastraps τοῦtou- ὑποδήματοςhypodēmatossandals
28ΤαῦταTautaAll this ἐνenat ΒηθανίᾳBēthaniaBethany ἐγένετοegenetohappened πέρανperanbeyond τοῦtouthe ἸορδάνουIordanouJordan , ὅπουhopouwhere ἦνēnwas ἸωάννηςIōannēsJohn βαπτίζωνbaptizōnbaptizing .
29ΤῇTēThe ἐπαύριονepaurionnext day βλέπειblepei[John] saw ὁho- ἸωάννηςIōannēsJohn τὸνton- ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus ἐρχόμενονerchomenoncoming πρὸςprostoward αὐτόνautonhim καὶkaiand λέγειlegeisaid , ἼδεIde“ Look , ὁhothe ἈμνὸςAmnosLamb τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , ὁhowho αἴρωνairōntakes away τὴνtēnthe ἁμαρτίανhamartiansin τοῦtouof the κόσμουkosmouworld !
30οὗτόςhoutosHe ἐστιestiis περὶperiabout ΟὔOu“ No . ” ἘγὼEgō“ I [am] εἶπονeiponsaid , ὈπίσωOpisōafter μουmoume ἔρχεταιerchetaiwho comes ἀνὴρanēr‘ A man ὃςhos- ἔμπροσθένemprosthensurpassed μουmoume γέγονενgegonenhas ὅτιhotibecause πρῶτόςprōtosbefore μουmoume . ’ ἦνēnHe was
31κἀγὼkagōI myself οὐκouk{did} not ᾔδεινēdeinknow αὐτόνautonHim , ἀλλ’all’but ἵναhina[was] that φανερωθῇphanerōthēHe might be revealed τῷtō- ἸσραὴλIsraēlto Israel . ” διὰdiathe reason τοῦτοtouto. . . ἦλθονēlthoncame ἐγὼegōI ἐνenwith τῷtō- ὕδατιhydatiwater βαπτίζωνbaptizōnbaptizing
32ΚαὶKaiThen ἐμαρτύρησενemartyrēsentestified ἸωάννηςIōannēsJohn λέγωνlegōn. . . , ὅτιhoti- ΤεθέαμαιTetheamai“ I saw τὸtothe ΠνεῦμαPneumaSpirit καταβαῖνονkatabainondescending ὡςhōslike περιστερὰνperisterana dove ἐξexfrom οὐρανοῦouranouheaven καὶkaiand ἔμεινενemeinenresting ἐπ’ep’on αὐτόνautonHim .
33κἀγὼkagōI myself οὐκouk{did} not ᾔδεινēdeinknow αὐτόνautonHim , ἀλλ’all’but ὁhothe [One who] πέμψαςpempsassent μεmeme βαπτίζεινbaptizeinto baptize ἐνenwith ὕδατιhydatiwater ἐκεῖνόςekeinos- μοιmoime , εἶπενeipentold Ἐφ’Eph’‘ [The man] on ὃνhonwhom ἂνan. . . ἴδῃςidēsyou see τὸtothe ΠνεῦμαPneumaSpirit καταβαῖνονkatabainondescend καὶkaiand μένονmenonrest ἐπ’ep’- αὐτόνauton- οὗτόςhoutos- ἐστινestinis ὁhoHe βαπτίζωνbaptizōnwho will baptize ἐνenwith ΠνεύματιPneumatiSpirit . ’ ἉγίῳHagiō[the] Holy
34κἀγὼkagōI ἑώρακαheōrakahave seen καὶkaiand μεμαρτύρηκαmemartyrēkatestified ὅτιhotithat οὗτόςhoutosthis ἐστινestinis ὁhothe ΥἱὸςHuiosSon τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God . ”
35ΤῇTēThe ἐπαύριονepaurionnext day πάλινpalinagain εἱστήκειheistēkeiwas there ὁho- ἸωάννηςIōannēsJohn καὶkaiwith ἐκekof τῶνtōn- μαθητῶνmathētōndisciples . αὐτοῦautouhis δύοdyotwo
36καὶkaiwith ἐμβλέψαςemblepsashe saw τῷtō- ἸησοῦIēsouJesus περιπατοῦντιperipatountiwalking by , λέγειlegeihe said , ἼδεIde“ Look , ὁhothe ἈμνὸςAmnosLamb τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God ! ”
37καὶkaiAnd when ἤκουσανēkousanheard αὐτοῦautouhim οἱhoithe δύοdyotwo μαθηταὶmathētaidisciples λαλοῦντοςlalountossay this , καὶkai- ἠκολούθησανēkolouthēsanthey followed τῷtō- ἸησοῦIēsouJesus .
38ΣτραφεὶςStrapheisturned δὲde- ὁho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus καὶkaiand θεασάμενοςtheasamenossaw αὐτοὺςautousthem ἀκολουθοῦνταςakolouthountasfollowing . λέγειlegeiHe asked αὐτοῖςautois- .
39ΤίTi“ What ζητεῖτεzēteitedo you want ? ” ΟἱHoi- δὲde- εἶπονeiponsaid , αὐτῷautō- , ῬαββίRhabbi“ Rabbi ” ὃho(which λέγεταιlegetai. . . μεθερμηνευόμενονmethermēneuomenonmeans ΔιδάσκαλεDidaskaleTeacher) , ΠοῦPou“ where μένειςmeneisare You staying ? ”
40ΛέγειLegeiHe replied αὐτοῖςautois- . ἜρχεσθεErchesthe“ Come καὶkaiand ἴδητεidēteyou see ἦλθανēlthanthey went οὖνounSo καὶkaiand εἶδόνeidonI saw ποῦpouwhere μένειmeneiHe was staying , καὶkaiand παρ’par’with αὐτῷautōHim . ἔμεινανemeinanspent τὴνtēn- ἡμέρανhēmeranday ἐκείνηνekeinēnthat ὥραhōrahour . ἦνēnIt was ὡςhōsabout δεκάτηdekatē[the] tenth
41ἦνēnIt was ἈνδρέαςAndreasAndrew , ὁho- ἀδελφὸςadelphosbrother , ΣίμωνοςSimōnosSimon ΠέτρουPetrouPeter’s εἷςheisone ἐκekof τῶνtōnthe δύοdyotwo τῶνtōnwho ἀκουσάντωνakousantōnheard παρὰpara- ἸωάννουIōannouJohn’s [ testimony ] καὶkaiand ἀκολουθησάντωνakolouthēsantōnfollowed αὐτῷautō[Jesus] .
42εὑρίσκειheuriskeifound οὗτοςhoutosHe πρῶτονprōtonfirst τὸνton- ἀδελφὸνadelphonbrother τὸνton[his] ἴδιονidion. . . ΣίμωναSimōnaSimon καὶkaiand λέγειlegeitold αὐτῷautōhim , ΕὑρήκαμενHeurēkamen“ We have found τὸνtonthe ΜεσσίανMessianMessiah ” ὅho(which ἐστινestinis μεθερμηνευόμενονmethermēneuomenontranslated as ΧριστόςChristosChrist) .
43καὶkaiand ἤγαγενĒgagen[Andrew] brought αὐτὸνautonhim πρὸςprosto τὸνton- ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus , ἐμβλέψαςemblepsaslooked at αὐτῷautōhim ὁho- ἸησοῦςIēsous[who] εἶπενeipen[and] said , ΣὺSy“ You εἶeiare ΣίμωνSimōnSimon ὁho- υἱὸςhuiosson ἸωνᾶIōnaof Jonah . σὺsyYou κληθήσῃklēthēsēwill be called ΚηφᾶςKēphasCephas ” ὃho(which ἑρμηνεύεταιhermēneuetaiis translated as ΠέτροςPetrosPeter) .
44ΤῇTēThe ἐπαύριονepaurionnext day ἠθέλησενēthelēsen[Jesus] decided ὃho(which ἸησοῦςIēsous[who] ἐξελθεῖνexeltheinto set out εἰςeisfor τὴνtēn- ΓαλιλαίανGalilaianGalilee . καὶkai- εὑρίσκειheuriskeiFinding ΦίλιππονPhilipponPhilip , καὶkai- λέγειlegeitold αὐτῷautōhim , ἈκολούθειAkolouthei“ Follow μοιmoiMe . ”
45ἦνēnwas δὲdeNow ὁho- ΦίλιπποςPhilipposPhilip ἀπὸapofrom ΒηθσαϊδάBēthsaidaBethsaida , ἐκek- τῆςtēsthe πόλεωςpoleōs[same] town ἈνδρέουAndreouas Andrew καὶkaiand ΠέτρουPetrouPeter .

47καὶkai[ the One] εἶπενeipenasked αὐτῷautō- . ΝαθαναήλNathanaēlNathanael ἘκEkfrom ΝαζαρὲτNazaretNazareth ? ” δύναταίdynatai“ Can τιtivvv ἀγαθὸνagathonanything good εἶναιeinaicome ΛέγειLegeisaid αὐτῷautō- . ΦίλιπποςPhilipposPhilip ἜρχουErchou“ Come καὶkaiand ἴδεidesee , ”
