1ΠιστὸςPistos[This is] a trustworthy ὁho- λόγοςlogossaying : εἴeiIf τιςtisanyone ἐπισκοπῆςepiskopēsan overseer , ὀρέγεταιoregetaiaspires to be καλοῦkaloua noble ἔργουergoutask . ἐπιθυμεῖepithymeihe desires
2δεῖdeimust οὖνounthen , τὸνtonAn ἐπίσκοπονepiskoponoverseer , ἀνεπίληπτονanepilepton[or] reproach εἶναιeinaibe μιᾶςmiasof but one γυναικὸςgynaikoswife , ἄνδραandra[the] husband νηφάλιονnēphaliontemperate , σώφροναsōphronaself-controlled , κόσμιονkosmionrespectable , φιλόξενονphiloxenonhospitable , διδακτικόνdidaktikonable to teach ,
3μὴmēnot πάροινονparoinondependent on wine , μὴmēnot πλήκτηνplēktēnviolent μὴmēnot αἰσχροκερδῆaisrokerdimoney-grubbing ἀλλ’all’Instead , ἐπιεικῆepieikēgentle , ἄμαχονamachonpeaceable , ἀφιλάργυρονaphilargyron[and] free of the love of money .
4τοῦtou[his] ἰδίουidiouown οἴκουoikouhousehold καλῶςkalōswell προϊστάμενονproistamenon[An overseer must] manage τέκναtekna[his] children ἔχονταechonta[and] keep ἐνenunder ὑποταγῇhypotagēcontrol , μετὰmetawith πάσηςpasēscomplete σεμνότητοςsemnotētosdignity .
5εἰeiif δέde[For] τιςtissomeone τοῦtou[his] ἰδίουidiouown οἴκουoikouhousehold , προστῆναιprostēnaito manage οὐκouk{does} not οἶδε,oideknows πῶςpōshow ἐκκλησίαςekklēsias[the] church ΘεοῦTheouof God ? ἐπιμελήσεταιepimelēsetai[how] can he care for
6μὴmē[He must] not [be] νεόφυτονneophytona recent convert , ἵναhinavvv μὴmēvvv τυφωθεὶςtyphōtheisor he may become conceited εἰςeisunder κρίμαkrima[ the same ] condemnation ἐμπέσῃempesē[and] fall τοῦtouas the διαβόλουdiaboloudevil .
7δεῖdeihe must δὲdeFurthermore αὐτῶνautōn- καὶkai. . . , μαρτυρίανmartyrianreputation καλὴνkalēna good ἔχεινecheinhave ἀπὸapowith τῶνtōnvvv ἔξωθενexōthenoutsiders , ἵναhinaso that μὴmēvvv εἰςeisinto ὀνειδισμὸνoneidismondisgrace ἐμπέσῃempesēhe will not fall καὶkaiand παγίδαpagida[into the] snare τοῦtouof the διαβόλουdiaboloudevil .
8ΔιακόνουςDiakonousDeacons ὡσαύτωςhōsautōslikewise σεμνούςsemnous[must be] dignified , μὴmēnot διλόγουςdilogousdouble-tongued μὴmē[or] οἴνῳoinōwine πολλῷpollōto much προσέχονταςprosechontasgiven μὴmē[or] αἰσχροκερδεῖςaischrokerdeisgreedy for money .
9ἔχονταςechontasThey must hold τὸtoto the μυστήριονmystērionmystery τῆςtēsof the πίστεωςpisteōsfaith ἐνenwith καθαρᾷkatharaa clear συνειδήσειsyneidēseiconscience .
10καὶkaiAdditionally οὗτοιhoutoithey δὲde. . . , δοκιμαζέσθωσανdokimazesthōsanmust first be tested πρῶτονprōton. . . . εἶταeitaThen , διακονείτωσανdiakoneitōsanlet them serve as deacons . ἀνέγκλητοιanenklētoiabove reproach , ὄντεςontesif they are
11ΓυναῖκαςGynaikas[the] women ὡσαύτωςhōsautōsIn the same way , σεμνάςsemnas[must be] dignified , μὴmēnot διαβόλουςdiabolousslanderers , νηφαλίουςnēphalious[but] temperate πιστὰςpistas[and] faithful ἐνenin πᾶσιpasiall
12ΔιάκονοιDiakonoiA deacon ἔστωσανestōsanmust be μιᾶςmiasof but one γυναικὸςgynaikoswife , ἄνδρεςandres[the] husband τέκνωνteknōn[of his] children καλῶςkalōsa good προϊστάμενοιproistamenoimanager καὶkaiand τῶνtōn[of his] ἰδίωνidiōnown οἴκωνoikōnhousehold .
13οἱhoithose who γὰρgarFor καλῶςkalōswell [as deacons] διακονήσαντεςdiakonēsanteshave served βαθμὸνbathmonstanding ἑαυτοῖςheautoisfor themselves καλὸνkalona high περιποιοῦνταιperipoiountaiacquire καὶkaiand πολλὴνpollēngreat παρρησίανparrēsianconfidence ἐνenin πίστειpistei[the] faith τῇtēthat [is] ἐνenin ΧριστῷChristōChrist ἸησοῦIēsouJesus .
14ΤαῦτάTautathese things σοιsoiyou γράφωgraphōI am writing ἐλπίζωνelpizōn[Although] I hope ἐλθεῖνeltheinto come πρὸςprosto σὲseyou τάχιονtachion. . .
15ἐὰνeanin case δὲde- βραδύνωbradynōI am delayed , ἵναhinaso that εἰδῇςeidēsyou will know πῶςpōshow δεῖdeieach one must ἐνenin οἴκῳoikōhousehold , ΘεοῦTheouGod’s ἀναστρέφεσθαιanastrephesthaiconduct himself ἥτιςhētiswhich ἐστὶνestinis ἐκκλησίαekklēsia[the] church ΘεοῦTheouGod , ζῶντοςzōntosof [the] living στῦλοςstylos[the] pillar καὶkaiand ἑδραίωμαhedraiōmafoundation τῆςtēsof the ἀληθείαςalētheiastruth .
16ΚαὶKaivvv ὁμολογουμένωςhomologoumenōsBy common confession , μέγαmegagreat : ἐστίestiI have τὸtothe τῆςtēs- εὐσεβείαςeusebeiasof godliness μυστήριονmystērionmystery ΘεὸςTheosGod ἐφανερώθηephanerōthēappeared ἐνenin σαρκίsarki[the] flesh , ἐδικαιώθηedikaiōthēwas vindicated ἐνenby πνεύματιpneumati[the] Spirit , ὤφθηōphthēwas seen ἀγγέλοιςangeloisby angels , ἐκηρύχθηekērychthēwas proclaimed ἐνenamong ἔθνεσινethnesin[the] nations , ἐπιστεύθηepisteuthēwas believed in ἐνenthroughout κόσμῳkosmō[the] world , ἀνελήφθηanelephtheHe was taken up ἐνenthroughout δόξῃdoxēglory .
