2ἘὰνEanSuppose γὰρgarvvv εἰσέλθῃeiselthēcomes εἰςeisinto τὴνtēn[your] συναγωγὴνsynagōgēnmeeting ὑμῶνhymōnyour ἀνὴρanēra man χρυσοδακτύλιοςchrysodaktylios[wearing] a gold ring ἐνen[and] ἐσθῆτιesthēticlothes , λαμπρᾷlamprafine εἰσέλθῃeiselthēcomes δὲdeand καὶkaialso πτωχὸςptōchosa poor [man] ἐνenin ῥυπαρᾷrhyparashabby ἐσθῆτιesthēticlothes
3καὶkaialso ἐπιβλέψητεepiblepsēteyou lavish attention ἐπὶepion τὸνtonthe [man] φοροῦνταphorountain τὴνtēn- ἐσθῆταesthētaclothes τὴνtēn- λαμπρὰνlampranfine καὶkaiand εἴπητεeipētesay , αὐτῷautōto him σὺsyYou Κάθου»Kathou“ Sit ὧδεhōdeHere [is] καλῶςkalōsof honor , ” καὶkai[but] τῷtōto the πτωχῷptōchōpoor [man] , εἴπητεeipētesay ΣὺSy“ You στῆθιstēthimust stand ” ἐκεῖekeivvv «ἢēor Κάθου»Kathou“ Sit ὧδεhōdeHere [is] ὑπὸhypoat τὸto- ὑποπόδιόνhypopodionfeet , ” μουmoumy
4καὶkai- οὐouvvv διεκρίθητεdiekrithētehave you not discriminated ἐνenamong ἑαυτοῖςheautoisyourselves καὶkaiand ἐγένεσθεegenesthebecome κριταὶkritaijudges [with] διαλογισμῶνdialogismōnthoughts ? πονηρῶνponērōnevil
5ἈκούσατεAkousateListen , ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers : μουmoumy ἀγαπητοίagapētoibeloved οὐχouch{Has} not ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod ἐξελέξατοexelexatochosen τοὺςtousthe πτωχοὺςptōchouspoor τοῦtouthe κόσμουkosmouworld πλουσίουςplousious[to be] rich ἐνenin πίστειpisteifaith καὶkaiand κληρονόμουςklēronomousto inherit τῆςtēsthe βασιλείαςbasileiaskingdom ἧςhēs- ἐπηγγείλατοepēngeilatoHe promised τοῖςtoisthose who ἀγαπῶσινagapōsinlove αὐτόνautonHim ?
6ὑμεῖςhymeisyou δὲdeBut ἠτιμάσατεētimasatehave dishonored τὸνtonthe πτωχόνptōchonpoor . οὐχouch[Is it] not οἱhoithe πλούσιοιplousioirich καταδυναστεύουσινkatadynasteuousinwho oppress ὑμῶνhymōnyou καὶkaiand αὐτοὶautoi- ἕλκουσινhelkousindrag ὑμᾶςhymasyou εἰςeisinto κριτήριαkritēriacourt ?
7οὐκouknot αὐτοὶautoi{Are} they βλασφημοῦσιblasphemousithe ones who blaspheme τὸtothe καλὸνkalonnoble ὄνομαonomaname τὸtothe ἐπικληθὲνepiklēthenhave been called ? ἐφ’eph’by which ὑμᾶςhymasyou
8ΕἰEiIf μέντοιmentoivvv νόμονnomonlaw τελεῖτεteleiteyou really fulfill βασιλικὸνbasilikon[the] royal κατὰkatastated in τὴνtēn- γραφήνgraphēnScripture , ἈγαπήσειςAgapēseis“ Love τὸνton- πλησίονplēsionneighbor σουsouyour ὡςhōsas σεαυτόνseautonyourself ,” καλῶςkalōswell . ποιεῖτεpoieiteyou are doing
9εἰeiif δὲdeBut προσωποληπτεῖτε,prosopolepteiteyou show favoritism , ἁμαρτίανhamartiansin ἐργάζεσθεergazestheyou ἐλεγχόμενοιelenchomenoi[and] are convicted ὑπὸhypoby τοῦtouthe νόμουnomoulaw ὡςhōsas παραβάταιparabataitransgressors .
10ὍστιςHostisWhoever γὰρgar- ὅλονholonwhole τὸνtonthe νόμονnomonlaw τηρήσῃtērēsēkeeps πταίσῃptaisēstumbles δὲdebut ἐνenat ἑνίhenijust one [point] γέγονεgegoneis πάντωνpantōnof [breaking] all of it . ἔνοχοςenochosguilty
11ὁhoHe who γὰρgarFor εἰπώνeipōnsaid , ΜὴMēvvv μοιχεύσῃςmoicheusēs“ Do not commit adultery ,” εἴπῃeipētells καὶkaiand μὴmē{does} not φονεύσῃςphoneusēsDo not murder .” εἰeiIf δὲde- οὐouvvv μοιχεύσειςmoicheuseis“ Do not commit adultery , ” φονεύσειςphoneuseis“ Do not murder , ” δέdebut γέγοναςgegonasyou have become παραβάτηςparabatēsvvv νόμουnomoua lawbreaker .
12οὕτωhoutōso λαλεῖτεlaleiteSpeak καὶkaiand οὕτωhoutōso ποιεῖτεpoieiteact ὡςhōsas διὰdiaby νόμουnomou[the] law ἐλευθερίαςeleutheriasthat gives freedom . μέλλοντεςmellontesthose who are going κρίνεσθαιkrinesthaito be judged
13ἡhē- γὰρgarFor κρίσιςkrisisjudgment ἀνέλεοςaneleoswithout mercy [ will be shown to ] τῷtōanyone who μὴmēvvv ποιήσαντιpoiēsantihas not been merciful ἔλεοςeleos. . . . κατακαυχᾶταιkatakauchataitriumphs over ἔλεοςeleosMercy κρίσεωςkriseōsjudgment .
14ΤίTiWhat τὸto- ὄφελοςophelosgood [is it] , ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , μουmoumy ἐὰνeanif πίστινpistinfaith , λέγῃlegēclaims τιςtissomeone ἔχεινecheinto have ἔργαergadeeds ? δὲdebut μὴmēno ἔχῃechēhas μὴmēno δύναταιdynataiCan ἡhēsuch πίστιςpistisfaith σῶσαιsōsaisave αὐτόνautonhim ?
15ἐὰνeanSuppose δὲdebut ἀδελφὸςadelphosa brother ἢēor ἀδελφὴadelphēsister γυμνοὶgymnoiwithout clothes ὑπάρχωσιuparkhosiis καὶkaiand λειπόμενοιleipomenoi- ὦσιosihearing . ” τῆςtēs- ἐφημέρουephēmeroudaily τροφῆςtrophēsfood .
16εἴπῃeipētells δέde[If] τιςtisone αὐτοῖςautoishim , ἐξexof ὑμῶνhymōnyou ὙπάγετεHypagete“ Go ἐνenin εἰρήνῃeirēnēpeace ; θερμαίνεσθεthermainesthestay warm καὶkaiand χορτάζεσθεchortazesthewell fed , ” μὴmē{does} not δῶτεdōteprovide for δὲdebut αὐτοῖςautois. . . τὰta[his] ἐπιτήδειαepitēdeianeeds , τοῦtou- σώματοςsōmatosphysical τίtiwhat τὸto- ὄφελοςophelosgood [ is that ] ?
17οὕτωhoutōso καὶkaitoo , ἡhē- πίστιςpistisfaith ἐὰνeanif μὴmē. . . ἔργαergain action , ἔχῃechēit does not result νεκράnekradead . ἐστίestiI have καθ’kath’by ἑαυτήνheautēnitself ,
18Ἀλλ’All’But ἐρεῖereiwill say , τιςtissomeone ΣὺSy“ You πίστινpistinfaith ἔχειςecheishave κἀγὼkagōand I ἔργαergadeeds . ” ἔχωechōhave δεῖξόνdeixonShow μοιmoime τὴνtēn- πίστινpistinfaith σουsouyour ἐκekby τῶνtōn- ἔργωνergōndeeds . σουsouyour κἀγὼkagōand I δείξωdeixōwill show σοιsoiyou ἐκekby τῶνtōn- ἔργωνergōndeeds . μουmoumy τὴνtēn[my] πίστινpistinfaith μουmoumy
19σὺsyYou πιστεύειςpisteueisbelieve ὅτιhotithat ὁho- ΘεόςTheosGod εἷςheisone . ἐστίestiI have καλῶςkalōsGood ποιεῖςpoieisfor you ! καὶkaiEven τὰtathe δαιμόνιαdaimoniademons πιστεύουσιpisteuousibelieve [that] — καὶkaiand φρίσσουσι.phrissousishudder .
20ΘέλειςTheleisdo you want δὲde- γνῶναιgnōnaievidence ὦōO ἄνθρωπεanthrōpeman , κενέkenefoolish ὅτιhotithat ἡhē- πίστιςpistisfaith χωρὶςchōriswithout τῶνtōn- ἔργωνergōndeeds νεκράnekradead . ἐστινestinis
21ἈβραὰμAbraamAbraham ὁho- πατὴρpatērfather ἡμῶνhēmōnour οὐκouk{Was} not ἐξexby ἔργωνergōnwhat he did ἐδικαιώθηedikaiōthējustified ἀνενέγκαςanenenkaswhen he offered ἸσαὰκIsaakIsaac τὸνton- υἱὸνhuionson αὐτοῦautouhis ἐπὶepion τὸtothe θυσιαστήριονthysiastērionaltar ?
22βλέπειςblepeisYou see ὅτιhotithat ἡhē[his] πίστιςpistisfaith συνήργειsynērgeiwas working with τοῖςtois- ἔργοιςergoisactions , αὐτοῦautouhis καὶkaiand ἐκekby τῶνtōnwhat ἔργωνergōnhe did . ἡhēthe πίστιςpistisfaith ἐτελειώθηeteleiōthēwas perfected
23καὶkaiand ἐπληρώθηeplērōthēwas fulfilled ἡhēthat γραφὴgraphēScripture ἡhēthe λέγουσαlegousasays , ἐπίστευσεepisteusebelieved δὲde“ - ἈβραὰμAbraamAbraham τῷtō- ΘεῷTheōGod , καὶkaiand ἐλογίσθηelogisthēit was credited αὐτῷautōto him εἰςeisas δικαιοσύνηνdikaiosynēnrighteousness ,” καὶkaiand φίλοςphilosa friend ΘεοῦTheouof God . ἐκλήθηeklēthēhe was called
24ὁρᾶτεhorateAs you can see ΤοίνυνToinynSo ὅτιhoti- , ἐξexby ἔργωνergōn[his] deeds δικαιοῦταιdikaioutaiis justified ἄνθρωποςanthrōposa man καὶkaiand οὐκouknot ἐκekby πίστεωςpisteōsfaith μόνονmononalone .
25ὉμοίωςHomoiōsIn the same way , δὲdevvv καὶkaieven ῬαὰβRhaabRahab ἡhēthe πόρνηpornēprostitute οὐκouk{was} not ἐξexby ἔργωνergōnher actions ἐδικαιώθηedikaiōthējustified ὑποδεξαμένηhypodexamenēwhen she welcomed τοὺςtousthe ἀγγέλουςangelousspies καὶkaiand ἑτέρᾳheteraon another ὁδῷhodōroute ? ἐκβαλοῦσαekbalousasent [them] off
26ὥσπερhōsperAs γὰρgar- τὸtothe σῶμαsōmabody χωρὶςchōriswithout πνεύματοςpneumatos[the] spirit νεκρόνnekrondead , ἐστινestinis οὕτωhoutōso καὶkai- ἡhē- πίστιςpistisfaith χωρὶςchōriswithout τῶνtōnwhat ἔργωνergōnhe did . νεκράnekradead . ἐστίestiI have
