1ΑὐτοὶAutoiYou yourselves γὰρgarFor οἴδατεoidateyou are aware , ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , τὴνtēn- εἴσοδονeisodonvisit ἡμῶνhēmōnour τὴνtēn- πρὸςprosto ὑμᾶςhymasyou ὅτιhotithat οὐounot κενὴkenēin vain . γέγονενgegonenwas
2ἀλλὰallaBut προπαθόντεςpropathonteswe had already endured suffering καὶkaiand ὑβρισθέντεςhybristhentesshameful treatment καθὼςkathōsAs οἴδατεoidateyou are aware , ἐνenin ΦιλίπποιςPhilippoisPhilippi . ἐπαρρησιασάμεθαeparrēsiasamethawe were bold ἐνenin τῷtō- ΘεῷTheōGod ἡμῶνhēmōnour λαλῆσαιlalēsaito speak πρὸςprosto ὑμᾶςhymasyou τὸtothe εὐαγγέλιονeuangeliongospel τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God . ἐνenin πολλῷpollōstrong ἀγῶνιagōniopposition ,
3ἩHē- γὰρgarFor παράκλησιςparaklēsisappeal ἡμῶνhēmōnour οὐκoukdoes not ἐκekarise from πλάνηςplanēsdeceit οὐδὲoude[or] ἐξex- ἀκαθαρσίαςakatharsiasulterior motives οὔτεoutevvv ἐνen. . . δόλῳdolōtrickery .
4ἀλλὰallaInstead , καθὼςkathōsas δεδοκιμάσμεθαdedokimasmethathose approved ὑπὸhypoby τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod πιστευθῆναιpisteuthēnaito be entrusted with τὸtothe εὐαγγέλιονeuangeliongospel , οὕτωhoutōso λαλοῦμενlaloumenwe speak οὐχouchnot ὡςhōsin order to ἀνθρώποιςanthrōpoismen ἀρέσκοντεςareskontesplease ἀλλὰallabut ΘεῷTheōGod , τῷtōwho δοκιμάζοντιdokimazontiexamines τὰςtas- καρδίαςkardiashearts . ἡμῶνhēmōnour
5οὔτεoutevvv γάρgarvvv ποτεpotevvv ἐνen. . . λόγῳlogōwords κολακείας*kolakeiasof flattery ἐγενήθημενegenēthēmenwe never used καθὼςkathōsAs οἴδατεoidateyou know , οὔτεoutevvv ἐνen. . . προφάσειprophasei[any] pretext πλεονεξίαςpleonexiasfor greed . ΘεὸςTheosGod [is] μάρτυςmartys[our] witness !
6οὔτεouteNor ζητοῦντεςzētountesdid we seek ἐξex- ἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōn- δόξανdoxanpraise οὔτεoute- ἀφ’aph’from ὑμῶνhymōnyou οὔτεoute[or] ἀπὸapo- ἄλλωνallōnanyone else , δυνάμενοιdynamenoiwe had authority ἐνen. . . . βάρειbareito demand [it] εἶναιeinaivvv ὡςhōs[although] as ΧριστοῦChristouof Christ ἀπόστολοιapostoloiapostles
7ἀλλ’all’Instead , ἐγενήθημενegenēthēmenwe were ἤπιοιēpioigentle ἐνenamong μέσῳmesō- , ὑμῶνhymōnyou ὡςhōslike ἂνan. . . τροφὸςtrophosa nursing mother θάλπῃthalpēcaring for τὰta- ἑαυτῆςheautēsher τέκναteknachildren .
8οὕτωςhoutōsvvv ὁμειρόμενοιhomeiromenoiWe cared so deeply ὑμῶνhymōn- εὐδοκοῦμενeudokoumen[that] we were delighted μεταδοῦναιmetadounaito share with ὑμῖνhyminyou οὐounot μόνονmonononly τὸtothe εὐαγγέλιονeuangeliongospel τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , ἀλλὰallabut καὶkaias well . τὰςtasour ἑαυτῶνheautōnown ψυχάςpsychaslives διότιdiotiThat is how ἀγαπητοὶagapētoibeloved ἡμῖνhēminto us . γεγένησθε.gegenestheyou have not been
9ΜνημονεύετεMnēmoneueteSurely you recall γάρgar. . . , ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , τὸνton- κόπονkoponlabor ἡμῶνhēmōnour καὶkaiand τὸνton- μόχθονmochthontoil . νυκτὸςnyktosnight γάρgar. . . , καὶkaiand ἡμέραςhēmerasday ἐργαζόμενοιergazomenoiWe worked πρὸςprosso that τὸtovvv μὴmēvvv ἐπιβαρῆσαίepibarēsaiwe would not be a burden τιναtinato anyone ὑμῶνhymōn- ἐκηρύξαμενekēryxamenwhile we proclaimed εἰςeisto ὑμᾶςhymasyou τὸtothe εὐαγγέλιονeuangeliongospel τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God .
10ὑμεῖςhymeisYou [are] μάρτυρεςmartyreswitnesses , καὶkaiand [so is] ὁho- ΘεόςTheosGod , ὡςhōsof how ὁσίωςhosiōsholy , καὶkai- δικαίωςdikaiōsrighteous , καὶkaiand ἀμέμπτωςamemptōsblameless ὑμῖνhyminamong you τοῖςtoiswho πιστεύουσινpisteuousinbelieved . ἐγενήθημενegenēthēmenour conduct was
11καθάπερkathaperFor οἴδατεoidateyou know ὡςhōsthat [we treated] ἕναhena- ἕκαστονhekastoneach ὑμῶνhymōnof you ὡςhōsas πατὴρpatēra father τέκναteknachildren — ἑαυτοῦheautou[treats] his own παρακαλοῦντεςparakalountesencouraging [you] , ὑμᾶςhymasyou , καὶkaiand παραμυθούμενοιparamythoumenoicomforting
12καὶkai- μαρτυρόμενοιmartyromenoiurging εἰςeis- τὸto- περιπατῆσαιperipatēsaito walk ὑμᾶςhymasyou ἀξίωςaxiōsin a manner worthy τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , τοῦtouwho καλοῦντοςkalountoscalls ὑμᾶςhymasyou εἰςeisinto τὴνtēn- ἑαυτοῦheautouHis own βασιλείανbasileiankingdom καὶkaiand δόξανdoxanglory .
13διὰdiabecause τοῦτοtouto- , καὶkai. . . ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe εὐχαριστοῦμενeucharistoumenthank τῷtō- ΘεῷTheōGod ἀδιαλείπτωςadialeiptōscontinually ὅτιhoti- παραλαβόντεςparalabonteswhen you received λόγονlogon[the] word ἀκοῆςakoēsthat you heard παρ’par’from ἡμῶνhēmōnus , τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God ἐδέξασθεedexastheyou accepted [it] οὐounot λόγονlogon[as the] word ἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōnof men , ἀλλὰallabut καθὼςkathōsas ἐστὶνestin- ἀληθῶςalēthōs[the] true λόγονlogonword ΘεοῦTheouof God — ὃςhoswhich is καὶkai[ the word ] ἐνεργεῖταιenergeitai[now] at work ἐνenin ὑμῖνhyminyou τοῖςtoiswho πιστεύουσινpisteuousinbelieve .
14ὙμεῖςHymeisyou , γὰρgarFor μιμηταὶmimētaiimitators ἐγενήθητεegenēthētebecame ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , τῶνtōnof the ἐκκλησιῶνekklēsiōnchurches τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God τῶνtōnof the οὐσῶνousōnare ἐνenin τῇtē- ἸουδαίᾳIoudaiaJudea ἐνenin ΧριστῷChristōChrist ἸησοῦIēsouJesus . ὅτιhoti- τὰtathe very things αὐτὰauta- ἐπάθετεepathetesuffered καὶkai- ὑμεῖςhymeisYou ὑπὸhypofrom τῶνtōn[your] ἰδίωνidiōnown συμφυλετῶνsymphyletōncountrymen καθὼςkathōs- καὶkai[suffered] αὐτοὶautoithey ὑπὸhypofrom τῶνtōnthe ἸουδαίωνIoudaiōnJews ,
15τῶνtōnwho καὶkaiboth τὸνtonthe ΚύριονKyrionLord ἀποκτεινάντωνapokteinantōnkilled ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus καὶkaiand τοὺςtoustheir own ἰδίουςidiousown people προφήταςprophētasprophets , καὶkaiand ἡμᾶςhēmas. . . . ἐκδιωξάντωνekdiōxantōndrove us out {as well} καὶkaiand ΘεῷTheōto God μὴmēvvv ἀρεσκόντωνareskontōnThey are displeasing καὶkaiand πᾶσινpasinto all ἀνθρώποιςanthrōpoismen , ἐναντίωνenantiōnhostile
16κωλυόντωνkōlyontōnhindering ἡμᾶςhēmasus τοῖςtoisthe ἔθνεσιethnesiGentiles λαλῆσαιlalēsaifrom telling ἵναhinahow σωθῶσινsōthōsinthey may be saved . εἰςeisAs a result , τὸto- ἀναπληρῶσαιanaplērōsaito heap up αὐτῶνautōntheir τὰςtas- ἁμαρτίαςhamartiassins {to full capacity} ; πάντοτεpantote{they} continue ἔφθασεephthasehas come δὲde- ἐπ’ep’upon αὐτοὺςautousthem . ἡhē- ὀργὴorgēwrath εἰςeisthe τέλοςtelosutmost
17ἩμεῖςHēmeiswe δέdealthough ἀδελφοίadelphoiBrothers , ἀπορφανισθέντεςaporphanisthenteswere torn away ἀφ’aph’from ὑμῶνhymōnyou πρὸςprosfor καιρὸνkairona short time ὥραςhōras. . . προσώπῳprosōpō(in person , οὐounot καρδίᾳkardiain heart) , περισσοτέρωςperissoterōsvvv ἐσπουδάσαμενespoudasamenwas even more intense . τὸto- πρόσωπονprosōponface [to face] ὑμῶνhymōnyou ἰδεῖνideinto see ἐνen[our] πολλῇpollē- ἐπιθυμίᾳepithymiadesire
18διὸdioSo ἠθελήσαμενēthelēsamenwe wanted ἐλθεῖνeltheinto come πρὸςprosto ὑμᾶςhymasyou — ἐγὼegōI , μὲνmenindeed ΠαῦλοςPaulosPaul , καὶkai[tried] ἅπαξhapaxagain καὶkaiand δίςdisagain — καὶkaibut ἐνέκοψενenekopsenobstructed ἡμᾶςhēmasus . ὁho- ΣατανᾶςSatanasSatan
19τίςtiswho [is] γὰρgarAfter all , ἡμῶνhēmōnour ἐλπὶςelpishope , ἢē[our] χαρὰcharajoy , ἢē[our] στέφανοςstephanoscrown καυχήσεωςkauchēseōsof boasting , ἢēif it is οὐχὶouchinot καὶkai- ὑμεῖςhymeisyou yourselves ἔμπροσθενemprosthenin the presence of τοῦtou- ΚυρίουKyriouLord ἡμῶνhēmōnour ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ΧριστοῦChristouof Christ ἐνen. . . . τῇtē- αὐτοῦautouHis παρουσίᾳparousiacoming ?
20ὑμεῖςhymeisYou γάρgarindeed ἐστεesteare ἡhē- δόξαdoxaglory ἡμῶνhēmōnour καὶkaiand ἡhē[our] χαράcharajoy .
