1ἈτενίσαςAtenisaslooked directly δὲdeAt this , ὁhothe ΠαῦλοςPaulosPaul τὸtoon the συνεδρίῳsynedriōSanhedrin εἶπενeipen[and] said , ἌνδρεςAndresvvv ἀδελφοίadelphoi“ Brothers , ἐγὼegōI πάσῃpasēin all συνειδήσειsyneidēseiconscience ἀγαθῇagathēgood πεπολίτευμαιpepoliteumaihave conducted myself τῷtō- ΘεῷTheōbefore God ἄχριachrito ταύτηςtautēsthis τῆςtēs- ἡμέραςhēmerasday . ”
2ὁhothe δὲdeAt this , ἀρχιερεὺςarchiereushigh priest ἉνανίαςHananiasAnanias ἐπέταξεepetaxecommanded that τοῖςtoisthose παρεστῶσινparestōsinstanding near αὐτῷautō[Paul] τύπτεινtypteinto strike αὐτοῦautouhim τὸtoon the στόμαstomamouth .
3ΤότεToteThen ὁho- ΠαῦλοςPaulosPaul πρὸςprosto αὐτὸνautonhim , εἰπὲeipesay ΤύπτεινTypteinstrike [you] , σεseyou μέλλειmelleiwill ὁho- ΘεόςTheos“ God τοῖχεtoichewall ! κεκονιαμένεkekoniamenewhitewashed καὶkai- σὺsyYou κάθῃkathēsit [here] κρίνωνkrinōnto judge μεmeme κατὰkataaccording to τὸνtonthe νόμονnomonlaw , καὶkaiyet παρανομῶνparanomōnyou yourself violate the law κελεύειςkeleueisby commanding μεmethat I τύπτεσθαιtyptesthaibe struck . ”
4ΟἱHoithose δὲdeBut παρεστῶτεςparestōtesstanding nearby εἰπὼνeipōnHe said ΤὸνTonthe ἀρχιερέαarchiereahigh priest τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God ! ” λοιδορεῖςloidoreis“ How dare you insult
5ἜφηEphēreplied , τεte- ὁho- ΠαῦλοςPaulosPaul ΟὐκOuk“ vvv ᾔδεινēdeinI was not aware ἀδελφοίadelphoi“ Brothers , ” ὅτιhotithat ἐστὶνestinhe was ἀρχιερεύςarchiereus[the] high priest , γέγραπταιgegraptaiit is written γὰρgarfor ἌρχονταArchonta[about the] ruler τοῦtouof λαοῦlaoupeople .’ ” σουsouyour οὐκouk‘ vvv ἐρεῖςereisDo not speak κακῶςkakōsevil
6ΓνοὺςGnousknowing δὲdeThen ὁho- ΠαῦλοςPaulosPaul , ὅτιhotithat τὸto- ἓνhenvvv μέροςmerossome of them ἐστίestiI have ΣαδδουκαίωνSaddoukaiōnSadducees τὸto- δὲdeand ἕτερονheteronothers ΦαρισαίωνPharisaiōnPharisees , ἔκραξενekraxenhe cried out ἐνenin τῷtōthe συνεδρίῳsynedriōSanhedrin , ἌνδρεςAndresvvv ἀδελφοίadelphoi“ Brothers , ἐγὼegōI ΦαρισαῖόςPharisaiosa Pharisee , εἰμιeimiam υἱὸςhuios[the] son ΦαρισαίουPharisaiouPharisee’s περὶperi[It is] because of ἐλπίδοςelpidos[my] hope καὶkai- ἀναστάσεωςanastaseōsin the resurrection νεκρῶνnekrōnof [the] dead ‹ἐγὼ›egō[that] I κρίνομαιkrinomaiam on trial . ”
7ΤοῦτοToutoAs soon as δὲde. . . αὐτοῦautouhe λαλήσαντοςlalesantosspeaking , ἐγένετοegenetobroke out στάσιςstasisa dispute τῶνtōnbetween the ΦαρισαίωνPharisaiōnPharisees καὶkaiand τῶνtōnbetween the ΣαδδουκαίωνSaddoukaiōnSadducees , καὶkaiand ἐσχίσθηeschisthēwas divided . τὸtothe πλῆθοςplēthosassembly
8ΣαδδουκαῖοιSaddoukaioi[the] Sadducees ‹μὲν›men. . . γὰρgarFor λέγουσιlegousisay μὴmēneither εἶναιeinaithere is ἀνάστασινanastasina resurrection , μήτεmētenor ἄγγελονangelonangels , μήτεmētenor πνεῦμαpneumaspirits , ΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioi[the] Pharisees δὲdebut ὁμολογοῦσιomologousiacknowledge τὰta- ἀμφότεραamphoterathem all .
9ἘγένετοEgenetoarose , δὲde- κραυγὴkraugēclamor μεγάληmegalēA great καὶkaiand ἀναστάντεςanastantesgot up οἱhoithe γραμματεῖςgrammateisscribes τοῦtou- μέρουςmerousparty τῶνtōnof the ΦαρισαίωνPharisaiōnPharisees διεμάχοντοdiemachonto[and] contended sharply λέγοντεςlegontes. . . , ΟὐδὲνOudennothing κακὸνkakonwrong εὑρίσκομενheuriskomen“ We find ἐνenwith τῷtō- ἀνθρώπῳanthrōpōman . τούτῳtoutōthis εἰeiWhat if δὲde- πνεῦμαpneumaa spirit ἐλάλησενelalēsenhas spoken αὐτῷautōto him ? ” ἢēor ἄγγελοςangelosan angel μὴmē. . . θεομαχῶμεν.theomakhomenfighting against God . ”
10πολλῆςpollēsso violent δὲde- ΓενομένηςGenomenēsWhen daylight came στάσεωςstaseōs[The] dispute εὐλαβηθεὶςeulabateistake-care/caution ὁho[that] the χιλίαρχοςchiliarchoscommander μὴmē. . . διασπασθῇdiaspasthēwould tear Paul to pieces ὁho. . . ΠαῦλοςPaulos. . . . ὑπ’hyp’vvv αὐτῶνautōnthey ἐκέλευσεekeleuse[and] directed that τὸtothe στράτευμαstrateumasoldiers καταβῆναιkatabēnaidown καὶkaialso ἁρπάσαιharpasai[and] remove him by force αὐτὸνauton. . . ἐκek. . . μέσουmesou. . . αὐτῶνautōn. . . ἄγεινageinbring [him] τεteand εἰςeisinto τὴνtēnthe παρεμβολήνparembolēnbarracks .
11ΤῇTēThe δὲde- ἐπιούσῃepiousēfollowing νυκτὶnyktinight ἐπιστὰςepistasstood near αὐτῷautō[Paul] ὁhothe ΚύριοςKyriosLord εἰπὲeipesay ΘάρσειTharsei“ Take courage ! ΠαῦλεPaulePaul ; ὡςhōsAs γὰρgar- διεμαρτύρωdiemartyrōyou have testified τὰta- περὶperiabout ἐμοῦemouMe εἰςeisin ἸερουσαλὴμIerousalēmJerusalem , οὕτωhoutōso σεseyou δεῖdeimust καὶkaialso εἰςeisin ῬώμηνRhōmēnRome . ” μαρτυρῆσαιmartyrēsaitestify
12ΓενομένηςGenomenēsWhen daylight came δὲde- ἡμέραςhēmeras. . . , ποιήσαντεςpoiēsantesformed τινὲςtinessome τῶνtōn- ἸουδαίωνIoudaiōnJews , συστροφὴνsystrophēna conspiracy ἀνεθεμάτισανanethematisanand bound themselves with an oath ἑαυτοὺςheautous. . . λέγοντεςlegontes. . . μήτεmētenot φαγεῖνphageinto eat μήτεmēte[or] πιεῖνpieindrink ἕωςheōsuntil οὗhou. . . ἀποκτείνωσιapokteinosi[and] kill [Him] . τὸνton- ΠαῦλονPaulonPaul .
13ἦσανēsanwere δὲde- πλείουςpleiousMore than τεσσαράκονταtessarakonta[where for] forty οἱhoi- ταύτηνtautēnin this τὴνtēn- συνωμοσίανsynōmosianplot . πεποιηκότεςpepoiēkotesthey had made
14οἵτινεςhoitinesThey προσελθόντεςproselthonteswent τοῖςtoisto the ἀρχιερεῦσιarkhiereusichief priests καὶkaiand τοῖςtois- πρεσβυτέροιςpresbyteroiselders εἰπὼνeipōnHe said ἈναθέματιAnathematiwith a solemn oath ἀνεθεματίσαμενanethematisamen“ We have bound ἑαυτοὺςheautousourselves μηδενὸςmēdenos[anything] γεύσασθαιgeusasthai[not] to eat ἕωςheōsuntil οὗhou. . . ἀποκτείνωμενapokteinōmenwe have killed τὸνton- ΠαῦλονPaulonPaul .
15νῦνnynNow οὖνounthen , ὑμεῖςhymeisyou ἐμφανίσατεemphanisatepetition τῷtōthe χιλιάρχῳchiliarchōcommander σὺνsynand τῷtōthe συνεδρίῳsynedriōSanhedrin ὅπωςhopōsto αὔριονauriontomorrow αὐτῶνautōn- καταγάγῃkatagagēbring him down πρὸςprosto ὑμᾶςhymasyou ὡςhōson the pretext μέλλονταςmellontas. . . διαγινώσκεινdiaginōskeinof examining ἀκριβέστερονakribesteronmore carefully . τὰtahis case περὶperi. . . αὐτοῦautou. . . ἡμεῖςhēmeisWe δὲde- πρὸproon the way τοῦtou. . . ἐγγίσαιengisai. . . . ” αὐτὸνauton. . . ἕτοιμοίhetoimoiready ἐσμενesmenare τοῦtou- ἀνελεῖνaneleinto kill αὐτόνautonhim
16ἈκούσαςAkousasheard about δὲdeBut [when] ὁhothe υἱὸςhuiosson τῆςtēs- ἀδελφῆςadelphēssister ΠαύλουPaulouof Paul’s τῷtō- ἔνεδρον,enedronplot , παραγενόμενοςparagenomenoshe went καὶkai. . . εἰσελθὼνeiselthōn. . . εἰςeisinto τὴνtēnthe παρεμβολὴνparembolēnbarracks ἀπήγγειλεapeggeileshe explained τῷtō- ΠαύλῳPaulōPaul .
17προσκαλεσάμενοςproskalesamenoscalled δὲdeThen ὁho- ΠαῦλοςPaulosPaul ἕναhenaone τῶνtōnof the ἑκατονταρχῶνhekatontarchōncenturions ἔφηephē[and] said , τῶνtōnof the νεανίανneanianyoung man τοῦτονtoutonthis ἀπάγαγεapagage“ Take πρὸςprosto τὸνtonthe χιλίαρχονchiliarchoncommander ; ἔχειecheihe has γὰρgar- τιtisomething ἀπαγγεῖλαίapangeilaito tell αὐτῷautōhim . ”
18ὉHo[the centurion] μὲνmen- οὖνounSo παραλαβὼνparalabōntook him αὐτὸνauton. . . ἤγαγεegage[the devil] led πρὸςprosto τὸνtonthe χιλίαρχονchiliarchoncommander καὶkaiand φησίνphēsinsaid , ὉHothe δέσμιοςdesmiosprisoner ΠαῦλοςPaulos“ Paul προσκαλεσάμενόςproskalesamenossent μεmeme ἠρώτησεeroteseasked τοῦτονtoutonthis τὸνton- νεανίανneanianyoung man ἀγαγεῖνagageinto bring πρὸςprosto σέseyou . ἔχοντάechontaHe has τιtisomething λαλῆσαίlalēsaito tell σοιsoiyou . ”
19ἘπιλαβόμενοςEpilabomenostook δὲde- τῆςtēsby the χειρὸςcheiroshand , αὐτοῦautou[the young man] ὁhoThe χιλίαρχοςchiliarchoscommander καὶkai- ἀναχωρήσαςanachōrēsasdrew [him] κατ’kat’vvv ἰδίανidianaside , ἐπυνθάνετοepynthanetoand asked , ΤίTi“ What ἐστινestinvvv ὃhovvv ἔχειςecheisdo you need ἀπαγγεῖλαίapangeilaito tell μοιmoime ? ”
20εἰπὲeipesay δὲde- ὅτιhoti- ΟἱHoi“ The ἸουδαῖοιIoudaioiJews συνέθεντοsynethentohave agreed τοῦtou- ἐρωτῆσαίerōtēsaito ask σεseyou ὅπωςhopōsto αὔριονauriontomorrow εἰςeisto τὸtothe συνέδριονsynedrionSanhedrin καταγάγῃςkatagagēsbring τὸνton- ΠαῦλονPaulonPaul ὡςhōson the pretext μελλόντωνmellontōn. . . τιti. . . ἀκριβέστερονakribesteronmore information πυνθάνεσθαιpynthanesthaiof acquiring περὶperiabout αὐτοῦautouhim .
21σὺsyyou , οὖνoun- μὴmē{Do} not {let} πεισθῇςpeisthēspersuade αὐτοῖςautoisthem ἐνεδρεύουσιenedreuousiare waiting to ambush γὰρgarbecause αὐτῶνautōn- ἐξex- αὐτῶνautōn- ἄνδρεςandresmen πλείουςpleiousmore than τεσσαράκοντα,tessarakonta[where for] forty οἵτινεςhoitines[They] ἀνεθεμάτισανanethematisanhave bound themselves with an oath ἑαυτοὺςheautous. . . μήτεmētenot φαγεῖνphageinto eat μήτεmēte[or] πιεῖνpieindrink ἕωςheōsuntil οὗhou. . . ἀνέλωσινanelōsinthey have killed αὐτόνautonhim ; καὶkai- νῦνnynnow , ἕτοιμοιhetoimoiready εἰσιeisiare προσδεχόμενοιprosdechomenoiawaiting τὴνtēn- ἀπὸapovvv σοῦsouyour ἐπαγγελίανepangelianconsent . ”
22ὉHothe μὲνmen- οὖνounSo χιλίαρχοςchiliarchoscommander ἀπέλυσεapelysedismissed τὸνtonthe νεανίανneanianyoung man παραγγείλαςparangeilasand instructed [him] , ΜηδενὶMēdeni[anyone] ἐκλαλῆσαιeklalēsai“ Do not tell ὅτιhotithat ταῦταtautathis ἐνεφάνισαςenephanisasyou have reported πρὸςprosto μὴmē{Do} not {let}
23καὶkai- προσκαλεσάμενόςproskalesamenoshe called δύοdyotwo τιναςtinas- τῶνtōnof [his] ἑκατονταρχῶνhekatontarchōncenturions εἶπενeipen[and] said , ἙτοιμάσατεHetoimasate“ Prepare στρατιώταςstratiōtassoldiers , διακοσίουςdiakosioustwo hundred ὅπωςhopōsto πορευθῶσινporeuthōsingo ἕωςheōsto ΚαισαρείαςKaisareiasCaesarea καὶkaiand ἱππεῖςhippeishorsemen , ἑβδομήκονταhebdomēkontaseventy καὶkai- δεξιολάβουςdexiolabousspearmen διακοσίουςdiakosioustwo hundred ἀπὸapoin τρίτηςtritēsthe third ὥραςhōrashour τῆςtēsof the νυκτόςnyktosnight .
24κτήνηktēnēmounts τεte- παραστῆναιparastēnaistand before ἵναhina- ἐπιβιβάσαντεςepibibasantes[for] τὸνton- ΠαῦλονPaulonPaul διασώσωσιdiasōsōsito take [him] safely πρὸςprosto ΦήλικαPhēlikaFelix . ” τὸνton- ἡγεμόναhēgemonaGovernor
25γράψαςgrapsas[And] he wrote ἐπιστολὴνepistolēnletter : περιέχουσανperiekhousanin τὸνton- τύπονtypon- τοῦτονtoutonthe following
26ΚλαύδιοςKlaudiosClaudius ΛυσίαςLysiasLysias , ΤῷTōTo κρατίστῳkratistōHis Excellency , ἡγεμόνιhēgemoniGovernor ΦήλικιPhēlikiFelix : ΧαίρεινChaireinGreetings .
27ΤὸνTon- ἄνδραandraman τοῦτονtoutonThis συλληφθένταsullephthentawas seized ὑπὸhypoby τῶνtōnthe ἸουδαίωνIoudaiōnJews , καὶkaiand μέλλονταmellontawere about ἀναιρεῖσθαιanaireisthaito kill [him] ὑπ’hyp’- αὐτῶνautōnthey ἐπιστὰςepistaswhen I came σὺνsynwith τῷtō[my] στρατεύματιstrateumatitroops ἐξειλόμηνexeilomento rescue [him] . αὐτῶνautōnthey μαθὼνmathōnFor I had learned ὅτιhotithat ῬωμαῖόςRhōmaiosa Roman citizen , ἐστίestiI have
28βουλόμενόςboulomenossince I wanted δὲdebut γνῶναιgnōnai“ The knowledge τὴνtēn[their] αἰτίανaitiancharges δι’di’- ἣνhēn- ἐνεκάλουνenekaloun[against] αὐτῷautōhim , κατήγαγονkatēgagonI brought [him] down αὐτῶνautōntheir εἰςeisto τὸto- συνέδριονsynedrionSanhedrin . αὐτῶνautōntheir
29ὃνhon- εὗρονheuronI found that ἐγκαλούμενονenkaloumenonthe accusation περὶperiinvolved ζητημάτωνzētēmatōnquestions τοῦtou[about] νόμουnomoulaw , αὐτῶνautōntheir [own] μηδὲνmēdenno δὲdebut ἄξιονaxionworthy θανάτουthanatouof death ἢēor δεσμῶνdesmōnimprisonment . ἔγκλημαenklēmacharge ἔχονταechontathere was
30ΜηνυθείσηςMēnytheisēswas informed that δέde[When] μοιmoiI ἐπιβουλῆςepiboulēsa plot εἰςeisagainst τὸνtonthe ἄνδραandraman , μέλλεινmelleinwould ἔσεσθαιesesthaithere was ὑπὸhypoby τῶνtōnthe ἸουδαίωνIoudaiōnJews , ἐξαυτῆςexautēsat once . ἔπεμψαepempsaI sent [him] πρὸςprosto σέseyou παραγγείλαςparangeilasI also instructed καὶkaivvv τοῖςtois[his] κατηγόροιςkatēgoroisaccusers λέγεινlegeinto present [τὰ]ta[their case] πρὸςprosagainst αὐτὸνautonhim ἐπὶepibefore σοῦsouyou . ἔρρωσο.errosoFarewell .
31ΟἱHoithe μὲνmen- οὖνounSo στρατιῶταιstratiōtaisoldiers κατὰkatavvv τὸtovvv διατεταγμένονdiatetagmenonfollowed their orders αὐτοῖςautois. . . ἀναλαβόντεςanalabontes[and] brought τὸνton- ΠαῦλονPaulonPaul ἤγαγονēgagon. . . διὰdiaby τῆςtēsof the νυκτόςnyktosnight . εἰςeisto τὴνtēn[their] ἈντιπατρίδαAntipatridaAntipatris .
32τῇtēThe δὲde- ἐπαύριονepaurionnext day ἐάσαντεςeasantes[and] let τοὺςtousthe ἱππεῖςhippeishorsemen πορεύεσθαιporeuesthai. . . σὺνsynwith αὐτῷautōhim . ὑπέστρεψανhypestrepsanthey returned εἰςeisto τὴνtēnthe παρεμβολήνparembolēnbarracks
33οἵτινεςhoitines[When the horsemen] εἰσελθόντεςeiselthontesarrived εἰςeisin τὴνtēn- ΚαισάρειανKaisareianCaesarea , καὶkai- ἀναδόντεςanadontesthey delivered τὴνtēnthe ἐπιστολὴνepistolēnletter τῷtōto the ἡγεμόνιhēgemonigovernor παρέστησανparestēsanpresented καὶkaiand τὸνton- ΠαῦλονPaulonPaul αὐτῷautōto him .
34ἈναγνοὺςAnagnous[The governor] read [the letter] δὲde- ὉHothe ἡγεμὼνhēgemōngovernor καὶkai- ἐπερωτήσαςeperōtēsasasked ἐκekfrom . ποίαςpoiaswhat ἐπαρχίαςeparkhiasprovince ἐστίestiI have καὶkaiand πυθόμενοςpythomenosLearning ὅτιhotithat ἀπὸapo[he was] from ΚιλικίαςKilikiasCilicia ,
35ΔιακούσομαίDiakousomai“ I will hear your case σοιsoiyou . ” ἔφηephē[and] said , ὍτανHotanwhen καὶkai- . ” οἱhoi- κατήγοροίkatēgoroiaccusers σουsouyour παραγένωνταιparagenōntaiarrive ἐκέλευσέekeleuse[and] directed that τῇtēThe αὐτὸνautonhim ἣνhēn- τὸto- πραιτωρίῳpraitōriōPraetorium . τοῦtou- ἩρῴδουHērōdouHerod’s φυλάσσεσθαιphylassesthaibe kept under guard
