1ἐστίestiI have δὲdeNow πίστιςpistisfaith ἐλπιζομένωνelpizomenōnof what [we] hope for ὑπόστασιςhypostasis[the] assurance πραγμάτωνpragmatōnof what ἔλεγχοςelenchos[and the] certainty οὐouvvv βλεπομένωνblepomenōnwe do not see .
2ἐνenvvv ταύτῃtautēThis is why γὰρgarvvv ἐμαρτυρήθησανemartyrēthēsanwere commended . οἱhoithe πρεσβύτεροιpresbyteroiancients
3ΠίστειPisteiBy faith νοοῦμενnooumenwe understand that κατηρτίσθαιkatērtisthaiwas formed τοὺςtousthe αἰῶναςaiōnasuniverse ῥήματιrhēmatiat God’s command ΘεοῦTheou. . . , εἰςeisso that τὸtowhat μὴvvv ἐκekout of φαινομένωνphainomenōnwas visible . τὰtaas the βλεπόμεναblepomenais seen , γεγονέναιgegonenaiwas not made
4ΠίστειPisteiBy faith πλείοναpleionaa better θυσίανthysiansacrifice ἍβελHabelAbel παρὰparathan ΚάϊνKainCain [did] . προσένεγκεprosenenkepresent the offering τῷ- ΘεῷTheōGod δι’di’By ἧςhēs[faith] ἐμαρτυρήθηemartyrēthēhe was commended εἶναιeinaias δίκαιοςdikaiosrighteous μαρτυροῦντοςmartyrountosgave approval ἐπὶepito τοῖςtois- δώροιςdōroisgifts . αὐτοῦautouhis τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheou[when] God καὶkaiAnd δι’di’by αὐτῆςautēs[faith] ἀποθανὼνapothanōn[even though] he is dead . ἔτιetivvv λαλεῖται.laleitaispeaks .
5ΠίστειPisteiBy faith ἙνὼχHenōchEnoch μετετέθηmetetethēwas taken up τοῦtou[so that] μὴvvv ἰδεῖνideinhe did not see θάνατονthanatondeath : καὶkai“ - οὐχouchvvv ηὑρίσκετοhēurisketoHe could not be found , διότιdiotibecause μετέθηκενmetethēkenhad taken him away αὐτὸνauton. . . . ” ho- ΘεόςTheosGod πρὸprobefore γὰρgarFor τῆςtēs- μεταθέσεωςmetatheseōshe was taken , μεμαρτύρηταιmemartyrētaihe was commended as εὐηρεστηκέναιeuerestekenaione who pleased τῷ- ΘεῷTheōGod .
6χωρὶςchōriswithout δὲdeAnd πίστεωςpisteōsfaith ἀδύνατονadynaton[it is] impossible εὐαρεστῆσαιeuarestēsaito please [God] , πιστεῦσαιpisteusaibelieve γὰρgarbecause δεῖdeimust τὸνtonanyone who προσερχόμενονproserchomenonapproaches τῷ- ΘεῷTheō[Him] ὅτιhotithat ἔστινestinHe exists καὶkaiand [that] τοῖςtoisthose who ἐκζητοῦσινekzētousinearnestly seek αὐτὸνautonHim . μισθαποδότηςmisthapodotēsHe rewards γίνεταιginetaivvv
7ΠίστειPisteiBy faith χρηματισθεὶςchrēmatistheiswhen warned ΝῶεNōeNoah , περὶperiabout τῶνtōnthings μηδέπωmēdepōnot yet βλεπομένωνblepomenōnseen , εὐλαβηθεὶςeulabētheisin godly fear κατεσκεύασεkateskeuasebuilt κιβωτὸνkibōtonan ark εἰςeisto σωτηρίανsōtēriansave τοῦtou- οἴκουoikoufamily . αὐτοῦautouhis δι’di’By ἧςhēs[faith] κατέκρινεkatekrinehe condemned τὸνtonthe κόσμονkosmonworld καὶkaiand τῆςtēsof the κατὰkatacomes by πίστινpistinfaith . δικαιοσύνηςdikaiosynēsrighteousness [that] ἐγένετοegenetobecame κληρονόμοςklēronomosheir
8ΠίστειPisteiBy faith καλούμενοςkaloumenoswhen called ἈβραὰμAbraamAbraham , ὑπήκουσενhypēkousenobeyed ἐξελθεῖνexeltheinto go εἰςeisto τὸνtonthe τόπονtopona place ὃνhon- ἔμελλεemelleHe was about λαμβάνεινlambaneinreceive εἰςeisas κληρονομίανklēronomian[his] inheritance , καὶkaiand ἜξελθεExelthe‘ Go out μὴwithout ἐπιστάμενοςepistamenosknowing ποῦpouwhere ἔρχεταιerchetaihe was going .
9ΠίστειPisteiBy faith παρῴκησενparōkēsenhe dwelt εἰςeisin γῆνgēnland τῆςtēsthe ἐπαγγελίαςepangeliaspromised ὡςhōsas {a stranger} ἀλλοτρίανallotrianin a foreign [country] . ἐνenin σκηναῖςskēnaistents , κατοικήσαςkatoikēsasHe lived μετὰmetaas did ἸσαὰκIsaakIsaac καὶkaiand ἸακὼβIakōbJacob , τῶνtōnwho [were] συγκληρονόμωνsugkleronomonheirs with him τῆςtēsof the ἐπαγγελίαςepangeliaspromise . τῆςtēs- αὐτῆςautēssame
10ἐξεδέχετοexedechetohe was looking forward to γὰρgarFor τὴνtēnthe τοὺςtous- θεμελίουςthemeliousfoundations , ἔχουσανechousanwith πόλινpolincity ἧςhēswhose τεχνίτηςtechnitēsarchitect καὶkaiand δημιουργὸςdēmiourgosbuilder [is] ho- ΘεόςTheosGod .
11ΠίστειPisteiBy faith καὶkaieven though αὐτῇautēshe ΣάρρᾳSarraSarah , δύναμινdynamin. . . εἰςeisto καταβολὴνkatabolēnconceive σπέρματοςspermatosa child , ἔλαβενelabenwas enabled καὶkaiand παρὰparabeyond καιρὸνkaironthe proper ἡλικίαςhēlikiasage , ἔτεκενetekenshe gave birth to ἐπεὶepeibecause πιστὸνpistonfaithful ἡγήσατοhēgēsatoshe considered τὸνtonHim ἐπαγγειλάμενονepangeilamenonwho had promised .
12διὸdioso καὶkaiAnd ἀφ’aph’from ἑνὸςhenosone man , ἐγεννήθησανegennēthēsancame descendants καὶkaiand ταῦταtautahe νενεκρωμένουnenekrōmenouas good as dead , καθὼςkathōsas τὰtaas the ἄστραastrastars τοῦtouin the οὐρανοῦouranousky τῷ- πλήθειplētheinumerous καὶkaiand ὡςhōsas the ἄμμοςammossand - παρὰparaon τὸtothe χεῖλοςcheilosseashore τῆςtēs. . . θαλάσσηςthalassēs. . . . - ἀναρίθμητοςanarithmētosas countless
13ΚατὰKatain πίστινpistinfaith , ἀπέθανονapethanondied οὗτοιhoutoithese [people] πάντεςpantesAll μὴwithout λαβόντεςlabontesto follow , τὰςtasthe ἐπαγγελίαςepangeliaspromises ἀλλὰallaHowever , πόρρωθενporrōthenfrom afar . αὐτὰςautasthem ἰδόντεςidontesthey saw [them] καὶkaiand ἀσπασάμενοιaspasamenoiwelcomed καὶkaiand ὁμολογήσαντεςhomologēsantesthey acknowledged ὅτιhotithat ξένοιxenoistrangers καὶkaiand παρεπίδημοίparepidēmoiexiles εἰσινeisinthey were ἐπὶepion τῆςtēsthe γῆςgēsearth .
14οἱhoithose who γὰρgarNow τοιαῦταtoiautasuch things λέγοντεςlegontessay ἐμφανίζουσινemphanizousinshow ὅτιhotithat πατρίδαpatridaa country of their own . ἐπιζητοῦσι.epizetousistrive after
15καὶkai- εἰeiIf μὲνmen- ἐκείνηςekeinēsvvv μνημονεύουσιν,mnemoneuousinthey had been thinking of ἀφ’aph’vvv ἧςhēs[the country] ἐξελθὼνexelthōnhe came out εἶχονeichonthey would have had ἂνanvvv καιρὸνkaironopportunity ἀνακάμψαιanakampsaito return .
16νῦνnyn. . . , δὲdeInstead κρείττονοςkreittonosa better [country] , ὀρέγονταιoregontaithey were longing for τοῦτ’tout’- ἔστινestin- ἐπουρανίουepouranioua heavenly [one] . διὸdioTherefore οὐκoukvvv ἐπαισχύνεταιepaischynetaiis not ashamed αὐτοὺςautous- ho- ΘεὸςTheosGod ΘεὸςTheosGod ἐπικαλεῖσθαιepikaleisthaito be called αὐτῶνautōntheir ἡτοίμασεetoimaseHe has prepared γὰρgarfor αὐτοῖςautoisfor them . πόλινpolina city
17ΠίστειPisteiBy faith προσενήνοχενprosenēnochenoffered up ἈβραὰμAbraamAbraham , τὸνton- ἸσαὰκIsaakIsaac [ on the altar ] . πειραζόμενοςpeirazomenoswhen he was tested , καὶkai- τὸνton- μονογενῆmonogenēone and only son , προσέφερενprosepherenwas ready to offer hoHe who τὰςtasthe ἐπαγγελίαςepangeliaspromises ἀναδεξάμενοςanadexamenoshad received
18πρὸςproseven though ὃνhonto him ἐλαλήθηelalēthē[God] had said ὅτιhoti- , ἘνEn“ Through ἸσαὰκIsaakIsaac κληθήσεταίklēthēsetaiwill be reckoned .” σοιsoiyour σπέρμαspermaoffspring
19λογισάμενοςlogisamenos[Abraham] reasoned ὅτιhotithat καὶkai- ἐκek- νεκρῶνnekrōn[the] dead , ἐγείρεινegeireinraise δυνατὸςdynatoscould ho- ΘεόςTheosGod ὅθενhothenfrom [death] . αὐτὸνauton[Isaac] καὶkaiback ἐνen[and] in παραβολῇparabolēa sense , ἐκομίσατοekomisatohe did receive
20ΠίστειPisteiBy faith καὶkai- περὶpericoncerning μελλόντωνmellontōnthe future . εὐλόγησενeulogēsenblessed ἸσαὰκIsaakIsaac τὸνton- ἸακὼβIakōbJacob καὶkaiand τὸνton- ἨσαῦĒsauEsau
21ΠίστειPisteiBy faith ἸακὼβIakōbJacob , ἀποθνῄσκωνapothnēskōnwhen he was dying , ἕκαστονhekastoneach τῶνtōnof υἱῶνhuiōnsons ἸωσὴφIōsēphJoseph’s εὐλόγησενeulogēsenblessed καὶkaiand προσεκύνησενprosekynēsenworshiped ἐπὶepi[as he leaned] on τὸtothe ἄκρονakrontop τῆςtēsof ῥάβδουrhabdoustaff . αὐτοῦautouhis
22ΠίστειPisteiBy faith ἸωσὴφIōsēphJoseph , τελευτῶνteleutōnwhen his end was near , περὶperi. . . τῆςtēsthe ἐξόδουexodouexodus τῶνtōnof the υἱῶνhuiōnvvv ἸσραὴλIsraēlIsraelites ἐμνημόνευσε,emnemoneusespoke about καὶkaiand περὶperiabout τῶνtōn- ὀστέωνosteōnbones . αὐτοῦautouhis ἐνετείλατοeneteilatogave instructions
23ΠίστειPisteiBy faith ΜωϋσῆςMōusēs- γεννηθεὶςgennētheisafter his birth , ἐκρύβηekrybēhid him τρίμηνονtrimēnonfor three months ὑπὸhypo- τῶνtōn- πατέρωνpaterōnparents αὐτοῦautou[Moses’] διότιdiotibecause εἶδονeidonthey saw ἀστεῖονasteiona beautiful τὸto[that he was] παιδίονpaidionchild , καὶkaiand οὐκoukvvv ἐφοβήθησανephobēthēsanthey were unafraid τὸtoof the διάταγμαdiatagmaedict . τοῦtouvvv βασιλέωςbasileōsking’s

25μᾶλλονmallonrather ἑλόμενοςhelomenosHe chose συγκακουχεῖσθαιsugkakoukheisthaito suffer oppression with τῷ- λαῷlaōpeople τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod’s ēthan πρόσκαιρονproskairon[the] fleeting ἔχεινecheinto experience ἁμαρτίαςhamartiasof sin . ἀπόλαυσινapolausinenjoyment
26μείζοναmeizonavvv πλοῦτονploutonvvv ἡγησάμενοςhēgēsamenosHe valued τὸνton- ΑἰγύπτουAigyptouof Egypt , θησαυρῶνthēsaurōntreasures τῶνtōn{above} the ὀνειδισμὸνoneidismondisgrace τοῦtou- ΧριστοῦChristoufor Christ ἀπέβλεπενapeblepenhe was looking γὰρgarfor εἰςeisahead τὴνtēnto [his] μισθαποδοσίανmisthapodosianreward .
27ΠίστειPisteiBy faith κατέλιπενkatelipen[Moses] left ΑἴγυπτονAigyptonEgypt , μὴnot φοβηθεὶςphobētheisfearing τὸνton- θυμὸνthymonanger ; τοῦtouthe βασιλέωςbasileōsking’s τὸνton- γὰρgar- ἀόρατονaoratoninvisible . ὡςhōsbecause ὁρῶνhorōnhe saw ἐκαρτέρησε.ekarteresehe persevered
28ΠίστειPisteiBy faith πεποίηκεpepoiekehas done τὸtothe πάσχαpaschaPassover καὶkaiand τὴνtēnthe πρόσχυσινproschysinsprinkling τοῦtou- αἵματοςhaimatosof blood , ἵναhinaso that μὴvvv hothe ὀλοθρεύωνolothreuōndestroyer τὰta[of] the πρωτότοκαprōtotokafirstborn θίγῃthigēwould not touch αὐτῶνautōn[Israel’s own] [ firstborn ] .
29ΠίστειPisteiBy faith διέβησανdiebēsan[the people] passed through τὴνtēnthe ἘρυθρὰνErythranRed ΘάλασσανThalassanSea ὡςhōsas διὰdiaon ξηρᾶςxērasdry ἧςhēs- πεῖρανpeirantried λαβόντεςlabontesto follow , οἱhoi[but when] the ΑἰγύπτιοιAigyptioiEgyptians κατεπόθησανkatepothēsanthey were drowned .
30ΠίστειPisteiBy faith τὰtathe τείχηteichēwalls ἸεριχὼIerichōof Jericho ἔπεσανepesanfell , κυκλωθένταkyklōthentaafter [the people] had marched around them ἐπὶepifor ἑπτὰheptaseven ἡμέραςhēmerasdays .
31ΠίστειPisteiBy faith ῬαὰβRhaabRahab , the πόρνηpornēprostitute οὐouvvv συναπώλετοsynapōletodid not perish with τοῖςtoisthose who ἀπειθήσασι,apeithesasidisobeyed ? δεξαμένηdexamenēbecause she welcomed τοὺςtousthe κατασκόπουςkataskopousspies μετ’met’in εἰρήνηςeirēnēspeace ,
32ΚαὶKaiAnd τίtiwhat ἔτιetimore λέγωlegōshall I say ? ἐπιλείψειepileipseiwill not allow μεmeme γὰρgar- διηγούμενονdiēgoumenonto tell ho- χρόνοςchronosTime περὶperiof ΓεδεώνGedeōnGideon , ΒαράκBarakBarak , ΣαμψώνSampsōnSamson , ἸεφθάεIephthaeJephthah , ΔαυίδDauidDavid , τεte- καὶkai- ΣαμουὴλSamouēlSamuel , καὶkaiand τῶνtōnthe προφητῶνprophētōnprophets ,
33οἳhoiwho διὰdiathrough πίστεωςpisteōsfaith κατηγωνίσαντοkatēgōnisantoconquered βασιλείαςbasileiaskingdoms , εἰργάσαντο*eirgasantoadministered δικαιοσύνηνdikaiosynēnjustice , ἐπέτυχονepetychon[and] gained ἐπαγγελιῶνepangeliōnwhat was promised ; ἔφραξανephraxan[who] shut στόματαstomata[the] mouths λεόντωνleontōnof lions ,
34ἔσβεσανesbesanquenched δύναμινdynamin[the] raging πυρόςpyrosfire , ἔφυγονephygon[and] escaped στόματαstomata[the] edge μαχαίρας,makhairasof [the] sword ἐνεδυναμώθησανenedunamothesan[who] gained strength ἀπὸapofrom ἀσθενείαςastheneiasweakness , ἐγενήθησανegenēthēsanbecame ἰσχυροὶischyroimighty ἐνenin πολέμῳpolemōbattle , παρεμβολὰςparembolasarmies {to flight} . ἔκλινανeklinan[and] put ἀλλοτρίωνallotriōnforeign
35ἜλαβονElabonreceived back γυναῖκεςgynaikesWomen ἐξexvvv ἀναστάσεωςanastaseōsraised to life again . τοὺςtous- νεκροὺςnekrousdead , αὐτῶνautōntheir ἄλλοιalloiOthers δὲde- ἐτυμπανίσθησανetympanisthēsanwere tortured οὐouvvv προσδεξάμενοιprosdexamenoi[and] refused τὴνtēn[their] ἀπολύτρωσινapolytrōsinrelease , ἵναhinaso that κρείττονοςkreittonosa better ἀναστάσεωςanastaseōsresurrection . τύχωσινtychōsinthey might gain
36ἕτεροιheteroiothers δὲde[Still] ἐμπαιγμῶνempaigmōnmocking καὶkaiand μαστίγωνmastigōnflogging , πεῖρανpeiran. . . ἔλαβονelabonendured ἔτιetieven δὲdeand δεσμῶνdesmōnchains καὶkaiand φυλακῆςphylakēsimprisonment .
37ἘλιθάσθησανElithasthēsanThey were stoned , ἐπρίσθησανepristhēsanthey were sawed in two , ἐπειράσθησαν,epeirasthesanthey were sawed in two , ἐνenby φόνῳphonō- μαχαίραςmakhairasof [the] sword ἀπέθανονapethanonthey were put to death περιῆλθονperiēlthonThey went around ἐνenin μηλωταῖςmēlōtaissheepskins ἐνen[and] αἰγείοιςaigeioisgoatskins δέρμασινdermasin. . . , ὑστερούμενοιhysteroumenoidestitute , θλιβόμενοιthlibomenoioppressed , κακουχούμενοιkakouchoumenoi[and] mistreated .
38ὧνhōnof [them] . οὐκouknot ἦνēnwas ἄξιοςaxiosworthy hoThe κόσμοςkosmosworld ἐπὶepiin ἐρημίαιςerēmiaisdeserts πλανώμενοιplanōmenoiThey wandered καὶkaiand ὄρεσιoresimountains , καὶkaiand σπηλαίοιςspēlaioiscaves καὶkaiand ταῖςtais- ὀπαῖςopaisholes τῆςtēsin the γῆςgēsground .
39ΚαὶKai- οὗτοιhoutoiThese πάντεςpantes{were} all μαρτυρηθέντεςmartyrēthentescommended διὰdiafor τῆςtēs[their] πίστεωςpisteōsfaith , οὐκoukvvv ἐκομίσαντοekomisanto[yet] they did not receive τὴνtēnwhat [was] ἐπαγγελίανepangelianpromised .
40τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod περὶperifor ἡμῶνhēmōnus , κρεῖττόνkreittonbetter τιtisomething προβλεψαμένουproblepsamenouhad planned ἵναhinaso that μὴvvv χωρὶςchōristogether with ἡμῶνhēmōnus τελειωθῶσι.teleiothosithey would be made perfect .
