1ΤίTiWhat οὖνounthen ἐροῦμενeroumenshall we say ἈβραὰμAbraam[that] Abraham , τὸνtonvvv πατέραpatera[the] father ἡμῶνhēmōnour εὑρηκέναιheurēkenaihas discovered ? κατὰkatavvv σάρκαsarkavvv
2εἰeiIf γὰρgarvvv ἈβραὰμAbraamAbraham ἐξexby ἔργωνergōnworks , ἐδικαιώθηedikaiōthēwas indeed justified ἔχειecheihe had καύχημαkauchēmasomething to boast about , ἀλλ’all’but οὐounot πρὸςprosbefore ΘεόνTheonGod .
3τίtiwhat γὰρgarFor {does} the γραφὴgraphēScripture λέγειlegeisay ? ἐπίστευσεepisteusehas believed δὲde“ - ἈβραὰμAbraamAbraham τῷ- ΘεῷTheōGod , καὶkaiand ἐλογίσθηelogisthēit was credited αὐτῷautōto him εἰςeisas δικαιοσύνηνdikaiosynēnrighteousness .”
4Τῷof δὲdeNow ἐργαζομένῳergazomenō[the] worker hothe μισθὸςmisthoswages οὐouvvv λογίζεταιlogizetaiare not credited κατὰkataas χάρινcharina gift , ἀλλὰallabut κατὰkataas ὀφείλημαopheilēmaan obligation .
5τῷto the [one who] δὲdeHowever , μὴvvv ἐργαζομένῳergazomenōdoes not work , πιστεύοντιpisteuontibelieves δὲdebut ἐπὶepiin τὸνtonHim who δικαιοῦνταdikaiountajustifies τὸνtonthe ἀσεβῆasebēwicked , λογίζεταιlogizetaiis credited - πίστιςpistisfaith αὐτοῦautouhis εἰςeisas δικαιοσύνηνdikaiosynēnrighteousness .
6καθάπερkathaperlikewise καὶkaiAnd ΔαυὶδDauidDavid λέγειlegeispeaks τὸνtonof the μακαρισμὸνmakarismonblessedness τοῦtouof the ἀνθρώπουanthrōpouman to whom to whom ΘεὸςTheosGod λογίζεταιlogizetaicredits δικαιοσύνηνdikaiosynēnrighteousness χωρὶςchōrisapart from ἔργωνergōnworks :
7ΜακάριοιMakarioi“ Blessed ὧνhōn[are they] whose ἀφέθησανaphethēsanare forgiven , αἱhai- ἀνομίαιanomiailawless acts καὶkai- ὧνhōnwhose ἐπεκαλύφθησανepekalyphthēsanare covered . αἱhai- ἁμαρτίαιhamartiaisins
8μακάριοςmakariosBlessed [is] ἀνὴρanēr[the] man Ho- οὗhouagainst him .” μὴvvv λογίσηταιlogisētaiwill never count ΚύριοςKyrios[the] Lord ἁμαρτίανhamartian[whose] sin
9Ho- μακαρισμὸςmakarismosblessing οὖνoun[only] οὗτοςhoutos[Is] this ἐπὶepion τὴνtēnthe περιτομὴνperitomēncircumcised , ēor καὶkaialso ἐπὶepion τὴνtēnthe ἀκροβυστίανakrobystianuncircumcised ? λέγομενlegomenWe have been saying γάρgar- ὅτιhoti- : ἘλογίσθηElogisthē“ it was credited τῷ- ἈβραάμAbraamof Abraham . the πίστιςpistisfaith εἰςeis. . . δικαιοσύνηνdikaiosynēnrighteousness
10πῶςpōsIn what context οὖνoun. . . ἐλογίσθηelogisthēwas it credited ? ἐνen. . . περιτομῇperitomēhis circumcision , ὄντιonti[Was it after] ēor ἐνenvvv ἀκροβυστίᾳakrobystia[before] ? οὐκouk[It was] not ἐνenvvv περιτομῇperitomē[after] , ἀλλ’all’but ἐνenvvv ἀκροβυστίᾳakrobystia[before] .
11ΚαὶKaiAnd σημεῖονsēmeion[the] sign ἔλαβεelabevvv περιτομῆςperitomēsof circumcision σφραγῖδαsphragida[as] a seal τῆςtēsof the δικαιοσύνηςdikaiosynēsrighteousness τῆςtēsthat [he had] πίστεωςpisteōsfaith τῆςtēsby ἐνen[while] τῇ- ἀκροβυστίᾳakrobystia[he was still] uncircumcised . εἰςeisSo then , τὸto- εἶναιeinaiis αὐτὸνautonhe πατέραpatera[the] father πάντωνpantōnof all τῶνtōnwho πιστευόντωνpisteuontōnbelieve δι’di’vvv ἀκροβυστίαςakrobystiasare not circumcised , εἰςeisin order that τὸto- λογισθῆναιlogisthēnaimight be credited καὶkaiAnd αὐτοῖςautoisto them . τὴνtēn- δικαιοσύνηνdikaiosynēnrighteousness
12καὶkaiAnd πατέραpatera[he is also the] father περιτομῆςperitomēsof the circumcised τοῖςtoiswho οὐκouknot ἐκek- περιτομῆςperitomēsof the circumcised μόνονmonononly ἀλλὰallabut καὶkaialso τοῖςtoiswho στοιχοῦσιstoikhousiwalk τοῖςtoiswho ἴχνεσινichnesinfootsteps τῆςtēsof the ἐνenvvv τῇ- ἀκροβυστίᾳakrobystia[he was still] uncircumcised . πίστεωςpisteōsfaith τοῦtou[that] πατρὸςpatrosfather ἡμῶνhēmōnour ἈβραάμAbraamAbraham
13ΟὐOuwas not γὰρgarFor διὰdiathrough νόμουnomou[the] law , - ἐπαγγελίαepangeliapromise τὸto- ἈβραάμAbraamof Abraham . the τὸto- σπέρματιspermatioffspring — αὐτοῦautouhis τῷ- κληρονόμονklēronomonheir αὐτὸνautonhe εἶναιeinaiwould be τοῦtou[that] κόσμουkosmou[of the] world διὰdia[given] through δικαιοσύνηςdikaiosynēs[the] righteousness πίστεωςpisteōsthat comes by faith .
14εἰeiif γὰρgarFor οἱhoithose ἐκek[who live by] νόμουnomou[the] law κληρονόμοιklēronomoi[are] heirs , κεκένωταιkekenōtaiis useless the πίστιςpistisfaith καὶkaiand κατήργηταιkatērgētaiis worthless , the ἐπαγγελίαepangeliapromise
15hothe γὰρgarbecause νόμοςnomoslaw ὀργὴνorgēnwrath . κατεργάζεταιkatergazetaibrings οὗhouwhere γὰρgarbecause οὐκoukno ἐστίestiI have νόμοςnomoslaw , οὐδὲoude[there is] no παράβασιςparabasistransgression .
16ΔιὰDiaTherefore , τοῦτοtouto[the promise comes] ἐκekby πίστεωςpisteōsfaith , ἵναhinaso that κατὰkatamay rest on χάρινcharingrace εἰςeis. . . τὸto- εἶναιeinai[and] may be βεβαίανbebaianguaranteed τὴνtēnvvv ἐπαγγελίανepangelian[it] παντὶpantito all τῷ[Abraham’s] σπέρματιspermatioffspring — οὐounot τῷto those who are ἐκekof τοῦtouthe νόμουnomoulaw , μόνονmonononly ἀλλὰallabut καὶkaialso τῷto those who are ἐκekof πίστεωςpisteōs[the] faith ἈβραάμAbraamof Abraham . ὅςhos[He] ἐστίestiI have πατὴρpatēr[the] father πάντωνpantōnall . ἡμῶνhēmōnof us
17καθὼςkathōsAs γέγραπταιgegraptaiit is written ὅτιhoti- : ΠατέραPateraa father πολλῶνpollōnof many ἐθνῶνethnōnnations .” τέθεικάtetheika“ I have made σεseyou κατέναντιkatenanti[He is our father] in the presence of οὗhouin whom ἐπίστευσεepisteusehas believed ΘεοῦTheouGod , τοῦtouthe [God who] ζωοποιοῦντοςzōopoiountosgives life τοὺςtousto the νεκροὺςnekrousdead καὶkaiand καλοῦντοςkalountoscalls τὰtawhat μὴ{does} not ὄνταontaexist . ὡςhōsyet ὄνταontaexist .
18ὡςhōsyet παρ’par’Against ἐλπίδαelpidaall hope , ἐπ’ep’in ἐλπίδιelpidihope ἐπίστευσενepisteusenbelieved εἰςeisand so τὸto- γενέσθαιgenesthaibecame αὐτὸνauton- πατέραpatera[the] father πολλῶνpollōnof many ἐθνῶνethnōnnations , κατὰkatajust as τὸto- εἰρημένονeirēmenonhe had been told , ΟὕτωςHoutōs“ So ἔσταιestaibe .” τὸto- σπέρμαspermaoffspring σουsou{shall} your
19καὶkai- μὴWithout ἀσθενήσαςasthenēsasweakening τῇin [his] πίστειpisteifaith , οὐouvvv κατενόησεkatenoesehe acknowledged τῷ- ἑαυτοῦheautouof his σῶμαsōmabody [ἤδη]ēdēvvv νενεκρωμένονnenekrōmenondecrepitness ἑκατονταετήςhekatontaetēsa hundred years old ) πουpouabout ὑπάρχωνhyparchōn(since he was καὶkaiand τὴνtēnthe νέκρωσινnekrōsinlifelessness τῆςtēs- μήτραςmētraswomb . 20εἰςeisin δὲdeYet τὴνtēnthe ἐπαγγελίανepangelianpromise τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , οὐouvvv διεκρίθηdiekrithēhe did not waver τῇ- ἀπιστίᾳapistiathrough disbelief ἀλλ’all’but ἐνεδυναμώθηenedynamōthēwas strengthened τῇin his πίστειpisteifaith δοὺςdous[and] gave δόξανdoxanglory τῷ- ΘεῷTheōto God ,
21καὶkai- πληροφορηθεὶςplērophorētheisbeing fully persuaded that ὅτιhoti- howhat ἐπήγγελταιepēngeltaiHe had promised . δυνατόςdynatosable ἐστίestiI have καὶkai- ποιῆσαιpoiēsaito do
22διὸdioThis is why καὶkai- ἘλογίσθηElogisthē“ it was credited αὐτῷautōto him εἰςeisas δικαιοσύνηνdikaiosynēnrighteousness .”
23ΟὐκOuknot ἐγράφηegraphēwere written δὲdeNow δι’di’for αὐτὸνauton[Abraham] , μόνονmonononly ὅτιhoti[the words] ἘλογίσθηElogisthē“ it was credited αὐτῷautōto him ”
24ἀλλὰallabut καὶkaialso δι’di’for ἡμᾶςhēmasus , οἷςhoisto whom μέλλειmelleivvv λογίζεσθαιlogizesthai[righteousness] will be credited — τοῖςtoisfor us who πιστεύουσινpisteuousinbelieve ἐπὶepiin τὸνtonHim who ἐγείρανταegeirantaraised ἸησοῦνIēsounJesus τὸνton- ΚύριονKyrionLord ἡμῶνhēmōnour ἐκekfrom νεκρῶνnekrōn[the] dead .
25ὃςhos[He] παρεδόθηparedothēwas delivered over to death διὰdiafor τὰta- παραπτώματαparaptōmatatrespasses ἡμῶνhēmōnour καὶkaiand ἠγέρθηēgerthēwas raised to life διὰdiafor τὴνtēn- δικαίωσινdikaiōsinjustification . ἡμῶνhēmōnour
