3ΚαὶKai- ἦλθενēlthenHe went εἰςeisinto πᾶσανpasanall τὴνtēnthe περίχωρονperichōronregion around τοῦtouthe ἸορδάνουIordanouJordan , κηρύσσωνkēryssōnpreaching βάπτισμαbaptismaa baptism μετανοίαςmetanoiasof repentance εἰςeisfor ἄφεσινaphesin[the] forgiveness ἁμαρτιῶνhamartiōnof sins ,
4ὡςhōsas γέγραπταιgegraptaiit is written ἐνenin βίβλῳbiblō[the] book λόγωνlogōnof [the] words ἨσαΐουĒsaiouof Isaiah τοῦtou- προφήτουprophētou[the] prophet : λέγοντοςlegontoswas speaking ΦωνὴPhōnē“ [A] voice βοῶντοςboōntosof one calling ἐνenin τῇtēthe ἐρήμῳerēmōwilderness ,

8ὁδὸνhodonway ΚυρίουKyrioufor [the] Lord , εὐθείαςeutheiasstraight ποιεῖτεpoieitemake τὰςtas- τρίβουςtribouspaths αὐτοῦautoufor Him .
9πᾶσαpasaEvery φάραγξpharanxvalley πληρωθήσεταιplērōthēsetaishall be filled in , καὶkaiand πᾶνpanevery ὄροςorosmountain καὶkaiand βουνὸςbounoshill ταπεινωθήσεταιtapeinōthēsetaimade low . καὶkai- ἔσταιestaishall be made τὰtaThe σκολιὰskoliacrooked [ways] εἰςeis. . . εὐθείαν*eutheianstraight , καὶkaiand αἱhaithe τραχεῖαιtracheiairough εἰςeis- ὁδοὺςhodousways λείαςleiassmooth .
10καὶkaiAnd ὄψεταιopsetaiwill see πᾶσαpasaall σὰρξsarxhumanity τὸto- σωτήριονsōtērionsalvation .’” τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod’s
11ἜλεγενElegen[John] said οὖνounThen τοῖςtoisto the ἐκπορευομένοιςekporeuomenoiscoming out ὄχλοιςochloiscrowds βαπτισθῆναιbaptisthēnaito be baptized ὑπ’hyp’by αὐτοῦautouhim , ΓεννήματαGennēmata“ You brood ἐχιδνῶνechidnōnof vipers , τίςtiswho ὑπέδειξενhypedeixenwarned ὑμῖνhyminyou φυγεῖνphygeinto flee ἀπὸapofrom τῆςtēsthe μελλούσηςmellousēscoming ὀργῆςorgēswrath ?
12ποιήσατεpoiēsateProduce οὖνounthen , καρποὺςkarpousfruit , ἀξίουςaxiousin keeping with τῆςtēs- μετανοίαςmetanoiasrepentance . καὶkaiAnd μὴmē{do} not ἄρξησθεarxēsthebegin λέγεινlegeinto say ἐνento ἑαυτοῖςheautoisyourselves , ΠατέραPatera[as our] father . ’ ἔχομενechomen‘ We have τὸνton- ἈβραάμAbraamAbraham λέγωlegōI tell γὰρgarFor ὑμῖνhyminyou ὅτιhotithat δύναταιdynataican ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod ἐκekout of τῶνtōn- λίθωνlithōnstones τούτωνtoutōnthese ἐγεῖραιegeirairaise up τέκναteknachildren τῷtō- ἈβραάμAbraamfor Abraham .
13ἤδηēdēvvv δὲdevvv καὶkaivvv ἡhēThe ἀξίνηaxinēaxe πρὸςprosat τὴνtēnthe ῥίζανrhizanroot τῶνtōnof the δένδρωνdendrōntrees , κεῖταιkeitailies ready πᾶνpanevery οὖνounand δένδρωνdendrōntrees , μὴmēvvv ποιοῦνpoiounthat does not produce καρπὸνkarponfruit καλὸνkalongood ἐκκόπτεταιekkoptetaiwill be cut down

16καὶkaiand ἐπηρώτωνepērōtōnasked αὐτὸνautonhim οἱhoiThe ὄχλοιochloicrowds λέγοντεςlegontes- , ΤίTi“ What οὖνounthen ποιήσωμενpoiēsōmenshould we do ? ”
17ἈποκριθεὶςApokritheis[John] replied δὲde- λέγειlegeihe was saying .) αὐτοῖςautois. . . , ὉHo“ Whoever ἔχωνechōnhas δύοdyotwo χιτῶναςchitōnastunics μεταδότωmetadotōshould share with τῷtōhim μὴmēnone , ἔχοντιechontiwho has καὶkaiand ὁhowhoever ἔχωνechōnhas βρώματαbrōmatafood ὁμοίωςhomoiōsthe same . ” ποιείτωpoieitōshould do
18ἮλθονĒlthoncame δὲde- καὶkaiEven τελῶναιtelōnaitax collectors βαπτισθῆναιbaptisthēnaito be baptized . καὶkai- εἰπὼνeipōnHe said πρὸςpros- αὐτόνauton- , ΔιδάσκαλεDidaskale“ Teacher , ” τίti“ what ποιήσωμενpoiēsōmenshould we do ? ”
21ΜηδὲνMēdenno πλέονpleonmore than παρὰpara. . . τὸto- διατεταγμένονdiatetagmenonare authorized , ” ὑμῖνhyminyou πράσσετεprassete“ Collect
22ἘπηρώτωνEpērōtōnasked δὲdeThen αὐτὸνautonhim καὶkai“ And στρατευόμενοιstrateuomenoi[some] soldiers λέγοντεςlegontes- , καὶkai“ And ἡμεῖςhēmeisvvv ΤίTiwhat ποιήσωμενpoiēsōmenshould we do ? ” καὶkai“ And εἰπὲeipesay πρὸςpros- αὐτούςautous- . ΜηδέναMēdena. . . συκοφαντήσητεsykophantēsētefalse accusation , ” μηδὲmēdeor διασείσητεdiaseisēte“ Do not take money by force ΚαὶKai- ἀρκεῖσθεarkeistheBe content with τοῖςtois- ὀψωνίοιςopsōnioiswages . ” ὑμῶνhymōnyour
23ΠροσδοκῶντοςProsdokōntoswere waiting expectantly δὲde- τοῦtouThe λαοῦlaoupeople καὶkaiand διαλογιζομένωνdialogizomenōnwondering πάντωνpantōn{were} all ἐνenin ταῖςtais- καρδίαιςkardiaishearts αὐτῶνautōntheir περὶperi- τοῦtou- ἸωάννουIōannouJohn μήποτεmepote. . . αὐτὸςautos- εἴηeiēcould be ὁhothe ΧριστόςChristosChrist .
24ἀπεκρίνατοapekrinatoanswered ὁho- ἸωάννηςIōannēsJohn ἄπασιapasieverything λέγωνlegōn- : ἘγὼEgō“ I μὲνmen- ὕδατιhydatiwith water , βαπτίζωbaptizōbaptize ὑμᾶςhymasyou ἔρχεταιerchetaiwill come , δὲdebut ὁho[One] ἰσχυρότερόςischyroterosmore powerful μουmouthan I οὗhouwhose οὐκouknot εἰμὶeimiI am ἱκανὸςhikanosworthy λῦσαιlysaito untie . τῶνtōnof ἱμάνταhimantastraps τῶνtōnof ὑποδημάτωνhypodēmatōnsandals αὐτοῦautou. . . αὐτὸςautosHe ὑμᾶςhymasyou βαπτίσειbaptiseiwill baptize ἐνenwith ΠνεύματιPneumatiSpirit ἉγίῳHagiō[the] Holy καὶkaiand πυρίpyriwith fire .

27χειρὶcheirihand αὐτοῦautouHis καὶkaiand διακαθαριεῖdiakatharieito clear τὴνtēn- ἅλωναhalōnathreshing floor αὐτοῦautouHis καὶkaiand συνάξειsunaxeito gather τὸνtonthe σῖτονsitonwheat εἰςeisinto τὴνtēn- ἀποθήκηνapothēkēnbarn ; αὐτοῦautouHis τὸtothe δὲdebut ἄχυρονachyronchaff κατακαύσειkatakauseiHe will burn up πυρὶpyrifire . ” ἀσβέστῳasbestōwith unquenchable
28ΠολλὰPollamany μὲνmen[With these and] οὖνounvvv καὶkai- ἕτεραheteraother παρακαλῶνparakalōnexhortations , εὐηγγελίζετοeuēngelizeto[John] proclaimed the good news to τὸνtonthe λαόνlaonpeople .

30προσέθηκεprosetheke[Herod] added καὶkai- τοῦτοtoutothis ἐπὶepito πᾶσιpasiall καὶkai- κατέκλεισεkatekleiseHe locked τὸνton- ἸωάννηνIōannēnJohn {up} ἐνenin τῇtē- φυλακῇphylakēprison .

34περιστερὰνperisterana dove . ἐπ’ep’on αὐτόνautonHim καὶkaiAnd φωνὴνphōnēna voice ἐξexfrom οὐρανοῦouranouheaven : γενέσθαιgenesthaicame λέγουσαν·legousanShe declared , ΣὺSy“ You εἶeiare ὁho- ΥἱόςHuiosSon ; μουmouMy ὁho- ἀγαπητόςagapētosbeloved ἐνenin σοὶsoiYou εὐδόκησαeudokēsaI am well pleased . ”
